I do agree that ppcoin.org and its branding could use a revamp. I mean what's up with that plate with maple, oak, and horse chestnut leaves on it.

I'm not really sure what that signifies?

Ahh green leaves = earth friendly = energy efficient. Ok I get it now ;o)

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I strongly think the name matters to mass adoption. We are talking about worldwide adoption here, not just the United States where Kum & Go is located.

Instead of becoming the next Kum & Go, we want to be the next 7-11.

The idea of PPCoin is excellent, but the name is subpar and I'm afraid this is the limiting factor to its success.

I didn't realize this earlier, but someone had the same thoughts as me.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=190791.0

EcoCoin is a great name. It has an implicit value over bitcoin implying that we are more environmental friendly than bitcoin and this is the direction that the world is heading towards....with the success of whole foods...and such.

Quote
PPC is the most innovative and exciting alt coin IMO.  It seems inevitable that a proof-of-stake will become a major player in the future cryptocoin sphere.  However, PPC has a marketing problem.  It's supposed to stand for 'peer to peer coin', but all the coins are peer to peer, plus as everyone always says, 'pee pee' sound silly.  PPC's critical advantage is being more environmentally friendly by saving electricity used in mining.  If it was called Ecocoin, and had a stylish and user friendly homepage as opposed to the quaint, cute game-like homepage of PPC, it would be welcomed and hugely take off.

Can you imagine it?  Ecocoins, the true currency of the revolution.  It would gain support of all the hippies, eco-warriors.  Stuff that has 'eco' in the name is very fashionable, and can rally fanatical support from nature lovers, like myself.

If I was remotely technical I'd do this myself but I haven't the slightest clue how release my own coin, even it it is a clone.

I also actually want PPC or a clone of it to be successful because of the environmentally friendly factor.  Someone give me a coin I can believe in!

Any thoughts on this idea?

Just for the record.
In Russian PPC is pronounced "ППЦ". It is abbreviated form (like OMG or WTF in English) of "fucking hell" more or less. I.e. a situation like you've crashed your car and lost your job on the same day. Or your town suffered from nuclear bombing/meteor shower/tsunami/etc.

Nintendo Wii sounds like 'wee' as in 'urine'. It's sold 100 million units world wide and is marketed as a family friendly entertainment system.

If an idea is good, the name isn't important.

That's because it already has the reputation of Nintendo behind it. It's borrowing the brand equity of Nintendo. Marketing 101. Apple can release a product known as iShit and millions of people will still buy it. Why? Because of their marketing and since it's an Apple product. Many sites like CNET rated the S3 over the iPhone 5, but the iPhone 5 and 4s still outsold the S3. It's not because Apple had the better product, because they actually don't. It's the brand message that they convey.

Try selling 100 million units from an unknown company with a product called Wii. See how that works. No one will know about the product at all. They have no brand awareness of you and so they draw the first impressions from your name.

Branding is very important. There are millions of articles talking about it. http://www.briansolis.com/2012/11/your-brand-is-more-important-than-you-think-brandstokes-9-criteria-for-brand-essence/

It's what is taught in business school. Why else do big companies create Twitter accounts and Facebook accounts to protect their brand?

Early branding is key to business success. It is the quickest way for your company to express what it is and what it can offer. PPCoin prides itself at being energy efficient. That's the major driving difference between the other alt coins. So the name should somehow reflect that and highlight this key competitive advantage. However, by calling it Peer coin, it's just merely stating that it's a cryptocurrency because Bitcoin, Litecoin and all these coins are all peer to peer electronic cash systems. However, if you call it something like EcoCoin, or EnviroCoin. You immediately position yourself as something different that sites you apart from the rest. This is our unique selling point! And we must seize every part of it to bring ourselves to the absolute top that we deserve.  I know this is what you want too convey because the picture of our coin is a leaf! But there is a disconnect as its hard to understand our logo without knowing the details of PPCoin itself.

If our name reflects the message of the leaf, then there is a brand consistency. EcoCoin, GreenCoin + Leaf = We understand.

Peer to Peer Coin + Leaf = Huh Huhwut?

Feather Coin = Feather. Good.

Believe me, the mainstream media is taking notice at the disadvantages of Bitcoin, especially with the article:
http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/13/the-cost-of-a-bitcoin/
Bitcoin Miners Are Racking Up $150,000 A Day In Power Consumption Alone

But we are different! We're sustainable and have a greener footprint! That's the promise that we are conveying to our prospective users. And we must let them know this!

Sunny, the other day you said updating the official site is low priority. Can I ask what you're working on currently?

Also.. the name. Is there anyway in the 9 hells you will change the name..

Ok I have heard enough of complaints of the project name. I understand most of you are wishing the project well, but you have to understand, rebranding is not a risk-free task and could cause a lot of confusion in the market, not to mention costing a ton of resources of the project.

Honestly I don't think the name is too bad, it's easy to remember. Yes there are a lot of immature people making fun of the name, but why can't we just ignore them and move on, I believe one day they would be the one looking funny when talking like that.

If you truly believe the name is causing us to lose market, I'd say the evidence is to the contrary. Just one month ago we were still in a close match with devcoin, terracoin, novacoin etc. Apparently the market has decided the name was either not that bad or didn't matter and now we are #3 even ahead of namecoin.

Like I said, if you hate the name with a passion, you can refer it as peercoin as you like. Amidst all these complaints I am a bit surprised to find someone who said ppcoin is a good marketing name, while feathercoin is not, because peer-to-peer is a tech term a lot of people can associate to.

As to our marketing message of energy efficiency, that's why the leaf coin icon was made. Yes it is our central marketing message from the beginning. But I think, peer-to-peer (i.e. decentralization) is the main innovation of cryptocurrency, having it in the name shouldn't be such a bad thing.

Personally I'm okay with the name. I like to call them Uncle Pep Pep coins.

But it seems SO many are not.

I understand re-branding is not something to be done lightly, but I do think it is possible and could have benefits, especially if it came with something like a mint while encrypted for casuals update.

Honestly I'm too new here to be talking shit, I just want the best for Pep Peps, and I feel like no one talks about it even though it is number 3 or whatever.

So the more PPCoins you have, and the older they are, the bigger PoS reward they give? Also, what does the current PoS difficulty translate to to the average user?

Cool thx for the link.

On another note I think ppcoin is OK for a name.  It would be rather inconvenient to re-brand it now.

The reward is basically a fixed 1% annual interest, assuming your wallet has low 'churning' and you run the client often enough to generate blocks.

As to the difficulty, difficulty 1 means 2**32 coin-day-second, it's less intuitive to PoW case if you are not familiar with how proof-of-stake is generated. Basically it means if your coin (txout) is 'weighted' at 1 coin-day, it would take 2**32 second on average to generate a block. Since v0.3, the weighting has been adjusted a bit. For example, a coin 30 days old gets 0 day weight, 60 days gets 30-day weight, 90 days and beyond gets 60-day weight.

Honestly I'm too new here to be talking shit, I just want the best for Pep Peps, and I feel like no one talks about it even though it is number 3 or whatever.

Being #3 is pretty respectable, but I'm looking at what we need to project ourselves into #2 or #1. I understand that there are a lot of risks associated with re-branding, but we are still so early into the game that its the best time to do so if we choose to brand. Something like PTP to emphasize the Peer to Peer would be alright as well.

I have a lot invested into the success of PPCoin and I want everything that can be done to increase the odds of success.

It's just that there is an overwhelming number of currencies right now and they are all decentralized. That's the nature of all these currencies. That's a given. Bitcoin, Litecoin, Namecoin, Terracoin, Devcoin, Novacoin, Ixcoin, Feathercoin.

I would much prefer to brand our coin and differentiate ourselves by emphasizing the major attraction of our coin, that it is the FIRST long term energy efficient crypto currency out there. People will eventually get coin fatigue in the future and there's going to be so many different coins out there. And more coming out in the future.

Sunny, your statement of " our central marketing message from the beginning. But I think, peer-to-peer (i.e. decentralization) is the main innovation of cryptocurrency, having it in the name shouldn't be such a bad thing." is only good if there is only one coin in existence. But there are so many different flavors of coins out there. People already associate Bitcoin with P2P.

We have a super crazy awesome unique selling point and that should be the strength that we market.

I want our name to be something that instantly rings with our potential user base to immediately tell them what we are all about.

Something like ECOCoin will immediately tell them that we are ecologically friendly and that sets us apart. Peer-To-Peer does nothing to differentiate us from the other Bitcoins because they are all Peer-To-Peer (that's the nature of Bitcoin itself). People will think....ECO and step back and think....wait a second....how?

Peer to Peer does none of that because all the cryptocurrencies are Peer to Peer.

Here's an analogy. Let's say the Alt coins are cookies. And what we're doing is that we're describing something that is an inherent property of the Alt coin as our name. So our name would be baked treat.

I feel it's far more effective if we name and market ourselves based on our ingredients (what sets us apart), so instead of calling us baked treat. We would be: chocolate chip cookie, raisin cookie, gingerbread cookie, peanut butter cookie.

If no one else made cookies in the world or any other baked treat, then calling us a baked treat would be appropriate.

From the Wikipedia,

As of April 14, 2013, PPCoin had a market cap of 29323 BTC (USD $2,932,300 Million)

Bitcoin is over 1 billion dollars.

We are only 0.002 of Bitcoin's market value.

[Edit: Current Numbers are: 7.5 million for PPCoin, and Namecoin is 6.8 million (which is fairly close)]

In order to seriously compete with Bitcoin and their first to market advantage, we need to ensure changes that can propel us forward. My goal is to have PPCoin replace Bitcoin in the future.

Maybe I'm not expressing myself properly, but I feel like we should have much more success already given the extraordinary nature of our technological advancement. I'm not saying that the name prevented us from losing market share, I'm saying that it may be a hurdle to becoming #1 in the future because PoS is fucking amazing and people don't really know about PoS yet....

No I hear you Jessica.

Sunny, I mean Jessica's right. They are ALL peer to peer. That's not what's special about them, and sure as hell not why I chose them as my primary alt coin either. I chose them because of PoS which actually sets them apart. I see PPC as the best or among the best from a feature stand point, and peer to peer isn't it..

maybe from a marketing point of view it is better to keep the name ppcoin, so people keep discussing it, it seems like the more ppcoin stays the same, the more people are talking about it (or just about its name, and sometimes discussion continues further into the backgrounds of ppcoin) Grin , although can be annoying sometimes
