Next in the calendar is the 2020 BNP Paribas Open, March 12 – 22, another Masters 1000 tournament.

Thiem is the defending champion, defeating Federer last year. So in the absence of Roger, he is rank 3, behind Djokovic and Nadal. Most of the top rank players entered this tournament so it will be interesting who will win tournament. I haven't check the odds though, but it looks like Djokovic, with the strength of his recent performance will be the favorite.

For sure, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and the defending champion will be the favourite for this year.

And then Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev. Hard to predict this early though, we might need to see their 1st and 2nd round performances before making any bets.

Also you have mentioned March 12th as the starting date of the tournament but I think its March 9 .

Main draws for Indian Wells and Miami always only start middle of the week for both tournaments. They are little Grand Slams and are the only tournaments that run for two weeks apart from the Grand Slams, but there is not enough matches to play for two full weeks. Both have a field of 96, so not as many as GS. and the top/seeded players have byes. Qualifying does start at March 9th and is also televised iirc.

@absy Thiem has lots of potential in him but he needs to perform consistently, and with Djokovic and Nadal also participating in this tournament it’ll be very difficult for him to win it without producing a tough fight which we all know he’s capable of producing. While I like Nadal a lot I don’t feel he’ll win it easily as his injuries have taken a toll on his body, but nevertheless i would like to see Nadal vs Thiem in the finals as both will not give up till the very end and it’ll make the match very interesting to watch.

I agree, I think this could be the year for Thiem as he has been around the mark for the last couple of years and it looks like he has improved on hard courts which was his weakness. I also think Stefanos Tsitsipas will have a good year and can see both these players challenging for the top 3 as Medvedev has dropped off and could take time to get the winning mentality back.

@absy - Yes, I double check, its March 9, thanks for the correction.

I do hope that we will see Thiem's time to shine this year to challenge either Djokovic and Nadal, we are not writing off Medvedev, but he needs to get this thing together if he wanted to break the top 3 and take advantage of Federer being absent because of injury.

Tsitsipas of course, he is playing very well at the start of the year, I look forward that he will have more tournament wins including Grand Slam this year.

Its okay buddy . You are right about Medvedev , couple of years ago I have seen him throwing rackets away and getting frustrated very easily but now he is playing with maturity and he is composed . I think he has the game to beat Federer easily now but against others like Nadal and Djoker maybe he has to try things differently. I would like to see him against Kyrgios though .

Those young generations really need to control their emotions. Yes, they could easily be frustrated in a game, but that will be start of their downfall. When is the last time we have seen the big 3 being frustrated resulting in a throw away match, because they can't control and angry at themselves for losing a point? They really need to see how the big 3 act, react and then the mentality to overcome everything to keep them on top.

Right now we have many good players with many personal and some different type issues which need to handle quickly because they are becoming more frustrated and giving reactions very wrongly which creating problems for them we have good talent but its need some good motivation as well for good and fair play.

I think a Medvedev and Kyrgios match would be great to see. Hopefully we see it happen some time this year and in a final of a grand slam whether its a quarter final or semi final as I think it would be an epic match between two up and comers.

I think the spotlight will be on Nadal in the coming months as he has a big chance to join Federer on 20 grand slam title wins. If Nadal doesn't win and Djokovic wins then it opens up the door for Djokovic to pass Nadal and equal Federer. I think its going to be an epic year for the top three players to see what happens with the grand slam standings. We know Federer is out for some time and hopes to get back for Wimbledon but by then we could see Nadal equal with Federer or Djokovic just 1 grand slam win behind Nadal. Then again we could see a young talent win the French Open which I think a lot of us here want to see.

Couldn't agree more . Look at Kyrgios , such a potential but unfortunately doesn't know how to behave . I won't be surprised if in coming years he is banned from tennis for doing something stupid .

@vella85 , yes it would be great to see someone else especially Thiem or Tsitsipas winning a major . Also I think Nadal will surpass Federer by next year..

Right, Nick K, is one classic example on how player, with so much potential, wasted his talent just because he acts stupid in and out of the court.

If Medvedev is slumping, we need to see Thiem and Tsitsipas stepping up and not let Djokovic and Nadal takes over the remaining schedule slams for this year.

Kyrgios is a lost cause already, we thought that we will see a different Nick this year, but I doubt it.

Yes, I have no doubt that Nadal or Djokovic can either surpass the record of Federer in the next two years or so. Both are still playing high level tennis, and it is just a matter of time.

Would like to see more on Tsitsipas this year, maybe we can see him having a break out year and at least win one major.

I think Thiem is one step ahead compared to Tsitsipas when it comes to winning a major . He has more experience , have defeated the top 4 and is a real threat to Nadal style of playing . Although Tsitsipas has become an amazing player he still needs experience to win a major I guess which Thiem already has.

Sad day for tennis - Indian Wells is canceled because of Corona virus. Damn, was looking forward to watching some first class tennis but it seems we will have to wait some more. There are big chances that Miami will not fare any better  Cry

I was talking to my brothers about the same yesterday . We were discussing the potential harm the stadiums can bring because of the virus . We might be sad for a week but believe me this is a good decision . Sports can be played even next year , its not worth the risk to play all tournaments which such a virus is out there.

does not have a sense to cancel Miami, since corona virus cannot stand on high temperatures, so it is not viable to live in Miami in this period of year, but nevertheless risk is too high for organizers to not cancel it

Ouch, sad news for tennis fans here, I'm excited to watch this tournament and make some beats, unfortunately, it looks like the corona virus pandemic has really affected us, even in sports. But we can't blame the organisers though, they just want to make sure that everyone are going to be safe. I'm expecting the remaining minor tournaments to be cancelled as well.

Yeah its not looking good for tennis with the corona virus, its okay if the smaller tournaments are cancelled however some players use these tournaments to help get them fit ready for the bigger tournaments and grand slams. Its going to affect all sports as we see many European football matches played with no fans in the stadium so maybe this could be an option for tennis tournaments.

I can promote your project on X to my 100k+ followers for a reasonable price. Just DM me for prices.
