I'm just trying to play devil's advocate here,

What are the chances that the Victorian government decided not to allow the Australian Open this year?

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-12-04/australian-open-must-be-careful-about-pandering-to-tennis-stars/12947002

I'm still confident that it will go ahead because the reason being is that if it doesn't then maybe another city could host the tournament instead like Sydney as they are currently hosting the cricket matches between Australia and India and all seems to be going well. There is mixed reports going around with the AO right now so its hard to believe what is being said.

The chance is still not certain because people's protection and the safety of the community remains the priority of the Victorian government they are going to update us if the Grand slam will take place or not but with vaccine issues i expected the Victorian government to allow it this year.

Nah, I don't think that the Victorian government will disallow it this year. There are a lot of sporting events bigger than tennis like cricket, so at least Australia knows how to handle AO this year.

They are just setting it up so that all doors are being covered here and to prevent Covid-19 spread by setting up safety and health protocols by pushing it a week or two.

The issue in my mind isn't to have the tournament or not, but to not compromise on the quarantine (well it could be a bit shorter as long as people are tested several times). Would the tournament pay for the hotels for the quarantine duration ? Especially for the "poor" players ?

Events later in the year could probably ask players and staff to be vaccinated, and then later in the year remove that requirement (by then all fragile people and all who fear the virus should have had the opportunity to get vaccinated).

I also expect them not to postpone the tournament due to the effect of the covid-19 vaccines developed but our opinion doesn't count though cause the Victorian government has the final say. Therefore, in order not to be optimistic about the tournament is better to keep fingers cross since the Victorian government hasn't made any final statement that will tell their decision

I think that we will get an answer very soon on the AO as I think the Victorian government is waiting to see how hotel quarantine works as yesterday was the first time in months that international travellers are allowed back in Melbourne and I think if all goes well then we could see some news on the AO. Maybe the government will give it this week to see and then get an announcement on Friday or next Monday.

Definitely this is a good news as the Victorian government is making some head way on how they are going to handle everything to not let players and everyone involved get the virus because of this safety protocols in place.

If they allow travelers to Melbourne already and then it was a success, then highly that AO will be held with fans around, control crowd with just 1000 fans in attendance or more.

This is not tennis related however it could be good news for the AO to have fans as the Victorian government has now allowed 30,000 fans to attend the Boxing Day test match. It was meant to be 25,000 but they pushed it up to 30,000 so it could be a good sign for early next years AO to have fans attend games but I suspect if they do then it would be low numbers. Right the issue is still with hotel quarantine but hopefully this is all sorted by the end of the year so then we can look forward to seeing the first grand slam of the year being played.

Yeah, every events that involved huge amount of crowds and allowed by the Victorian government is already a positive sign that AO could be the next big sporting events with fans watching at the sideline.

Not expecting though that it will be huge, probably a test run of 1000-2000 fans around. And yes, probably hotel are also in the middle and most likely setting up everything to cover players itself.

Well so far the hotel quarantine in Melbourne is holding up well even though some returned travellers have the virus so we saw a spike in covid cases the other day but as long as they can keep it there then we should be fine and like I said, I think the Victorian government is waiting to see how well this goes before making any decisions on the AO. I really do hope that we see the AO go ahead as its one of the top tournaments in tennis and is much loved by the players and fans.

Interesting read about Federer condition right now.

Quote
“I would have hoped that I would be at 100 percent by October. But I still am not today. It will be tight for the Australian Open.”

https://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2020/12/roger-federer-australian-open-knee-news-might-not-play/92142/

This is bad news for Roger's fan, it seems that he admitted that his operation and recovery is very slow and he might not be ready for Australian Open 2021. And he admitted that he is in no rush, so I would assume that he will missed AO and let his body really heal before playing again. His target is Olympics, so let's hope that he is 100% next year in time for this biggest sporting event.

^^ I think it will be beneficial for Federer to rest and recover and fully heal his body before entering any tournaments. He is lucky that we have Covid-19 and that most of the tennis tournaments have been suspended early so he has a lot of time to recover.

But it seems it was enough though, if the timeline for him is up to October, maybe his body is really showing his real age or if the operation is not that successful on his body and react differently as it supposed to do.

I really hope he targets the Olympics as his pinnacle. To be able to win the Olympic tournament aged 40 would be a terrific achievement.
It's actually amazing that a player of his calibre never won the Olympic tournament. I wanted to see who he lost to, some I remembered and some not. So, here goes:

2000 - Haas (semifinals). Lost the match for bronze against Di Pasquale
2004 - Berdych (2nd round)
2008 - Blake (QF)
2012 - Murray (finals, straight sets)
2016 - missed due to injury

He has a gold medal though, he and Wawrinka won it in doubles in 2008.

There is also a problem that you can't compete on Olympics if you don't represent your country in Davis Cup. I believe some of best players missed Olympic tournaments for this reason. Don't remember player names, believe Djoko was one of them. Here is quote of the part of requirements for Olympic tournament which is connected to Davis cup participation:
Quote
v)   The player must have fulfilled the minimum participation requirement in the ITF Davis Cup or ITF Fed Cup Competitions during the Olympic Cycle, by being either:
a) part of the final nominated Davis Cup or Fed Cup team at the time of the draw and present  at  the  tie  on  a  minimum  of  three  (3)  occasions  during  the  Olympic  Cycle,  provided that one of those occasions is in either 2019 or 2020; or
b)   part of the final nominated Davis Cup or Fed Cup team at the time of the draw and present  at  the  tie  on  a  minimum  of  two  (2)  occasions  during  the  Olympic  Cycle,  provided that one of those occasions is in either 2019 or 2020, if the player falls within either of the following categories:
(I) Length of Service:  The player has reached the milestone of 20 weeks in their Davis Cup  or  Fed  Cup  career,  with  each  home  and  away  tie  and  each  round-robin  event  counting as a single week; or
(II) Zone Group Round Robin Event:   A player whose National Association competes for  four  (4)  or  three  (3)  years  in  the  Zone  Group  Round  Robin  format  with  the  remaining year/s in the home and away format

Nope, Đoković played in all of them.

2008 - lost to Nadal in the semis, won bronze against Blake
2012 - lost to Murray in the semis, lost for 3rd against Delpo
2016 - lost in the 1st round against Delpo, who later reached the final and lost to Murray.

Mostly the top seeds do play in these tournaments. And it's really hard to win one.

There is also a problem that you can't compete on Olympics if you don't represent your country in Davis Cup. I believe some of best players missed Olympic tournaments for this reason. Don't remember player names, believe Djoko was one of them.

Nope, Đoković played in all of them.

2008 - lost to Nadal in the semis, won bronze against Blake

Perhaps one of the curse for Federer, Lol, the Olympic has medal has eluded him many times and probably this is his last chances to win it, however, when your body is telling you otherwise, it's going to be very difficult.

And probably the more pressure on him as time goes by, that's why he hard a time reaching the finals of the Olympics.

Good news for us tennis fans. The Australian Open has been giving the green light to go ahead in 2021 however as we expected it will be delayed by 2 weeks and the start date is now on Monday February 8th. However I also read that ATP 250 events have been confirmed to not be taking place in 2021 due to the virus pandemic which is a shame but at least we will get to see the first grand slam of the year being played.

I can promote your project on X to my 100k+ followers for a reasonable price. Just DM me for prices.

Djokovic won almost everything he could in his career, except for Olympic gold.
Knowing his ''hunger'' for victories and records, I think next year’s Olympics will be one of his main goals.
He believes that he is the best tennis player of all time, which means that he must be the best in everything, in all competitions.
These Olympics, given his age, are his last chance for a gold medal.

Same applies for Federer and he already won Olymic gold (although only in double). While Djokovic believes he is the best player every, I think he is only ranked 3rd, in my eyes far behind Nadal and Federer. I think Federer also has the most natural talent, I always enjoy watching him play.

That's good news! Lets hope Federer will participate in this but he needs to be 100%.

BIG WINNER!
