I don’t know if this passes for news or not (probably not) but Tristan Thompson is reportedly going to sign a 1-year contract to retire with the Cavaliers. I think that’s probably the only team that would sign him and I doubt he’ll get much playing time. He fell off pretty hard after jumping head first into the Kardasian curse.

These Kardashians, they know how to bring a man down. Lamar Odom, Kris Humphries, Tristan Thompson, Ben Simmons, ... . Only Blake Griffin and Devin Booker somehow survived them without too much shade on their careers.  Grin

Seems like the Cavs just give him a pitty contract so he can officially get a "farewell" tour from the Cavs fans. I don't see him having a lot of veteran leadership to be honest.

He was even called overrated when he signed a good contract after the success with LeBron. When Lebron left the team, his teammates aren't playing as well as they used to. It was a good decision by the Cavaliers to move on, as they are improving now and should focus on their young players, potentially forming a championship team. Speaking of players linked to the Kardashians, I think James Harden was not added on the list because his production did decline when he got involved with one of them.

Probably he will do like a Udonis Haslem with the Cavs, he is just there sitting but his presence is enough for the team and the management. And he was lucky that the Cavs sign him for a one year. I'm also thinking that maybe after he retire, he might be given a job in the front office.
That's likely his going to be role for the team with this season.

Unlike Haslem, he's been there for the team with his entire career CMIIW. Whilst Tristan went to other teams as well and traded there but it is for sure that there's this vibe on him.

Cavs value his leadership and they provably think that he will be a good mentor to their young centers. He can use his experience to guide their young players and I think this is what Cavs want from him.

Right now his position is to be their third center so most provably he will seat a lot on bench and expect a same like Haslem situation. But who knows maybe he can perform well and get more minutes since Cavs management already knows him well. But any other than that its good to see Thompson to be back on the team who draft him and end up his career there. Maybe this situation could open up a door and he can work with Cavs management after he retire since there's huge possibilities that it will happen, although this is just a speculation only.

Well, "pitty" contract is way too harsh if you will ask me, but can't blame you if that's what you describe it. Wink

On the flip side, this veteran minimum contract that they gave to him is just enough because like what you said, you can't see any leadership on him, but what I can see with him is his good rebounding skills, and even though he's a traditional center that can't shoot threes, he can just give your team at least 5 RPG if given the time. Whatever it is though, I will remember him as the player who has this weird face when his free throw is an airball back when he's in Chicago.

Yeah, and it Cavs is willing to take him in again, then no doubt he will retire as a Cavs and who knows, they could offer him a job.

And for sure he had build up a good relationship from the front office as well, although he might have played with other teams, going back to the Cavs he could be that loud mouth and be a mentor on some of their players.

If he is given time to play, then he will be their backup center.

I just saw that news as well. Well, if he's about to retire within the year, that's better if he's already on his way.

He'll be able to mentor Donovan and the others there even if he'll get lesser playing time. For sure it feels good to play and retire with the team that drafted him and given him a ring.

I don't see Tristan Thompson as some sort of drizzled vet that could provide people like Donovan Mitchell guidance or anything.  Don has played enough where he doesn't need an old head to help him out.  I think this is more done out of respect for a player so that they can retire there.  My guess is he never sees the floor but gets to retire there in a planned out exit.  Good for both sides though.
Yeah, good for Cavs and Tristan Thompson.

Maybe some of his words can be helpful as he's the only guy remaining there that have won a title with the Cavs. So, that really is respectful and a nice exit.

I now can imagine those contents that I have watched before about getting paid while sitting on an NBA bench.

If he is given time to play, then he will be their backup center.

If he could contribute well, he would have been given a decent number of minutes. But he's not getting any younger and is already at the peak of his career, so it would be wiser if the management lets him retire. Kevin Love is older than him by three years, but Kevin Love is making more contributions to his team, especially since signing with the Miami Heat.

Every player will have an end, but this kind of ending may not look good in my opinion, as it might seem like when you're at a job, and they aren't satisfied anymore, so you're advised to resign instead of being fired.

We can't conclude it yet as he still got plenty of time to make every minutes count, with this opportunty to retire his jersey it's possible just in case he send inside to play decent minutes he needs to showcase eveyrthing that left in him to make it valuable, like you said hes not getting any younger but it's the opposite.

If he got that chance to play make sure to provide some help, though he's not that very offensive but the help in giving a tough defense and grab some balls to collect for  both  offensive and defensive stats.

I don't think he is going to end up being theor backup center.  Not sure what he has left.  Think it's more a courtesy than anything else.  Cavs are one of those teams that are stuck in the middle.  Not good enough to compete but not bad enough to break the team apart and rebuild.  Probably the worst spot to be in sports.

Tristan Thompson doesn't even look like he should be getting a contract to be fair, even a minimum seems like a lot for him, he will probably not get any minutes outside of garbage time at all, only reason they got him is because he was part of the team that got their only ring ever, and they gave him a minimum contract for 12th man, that's it. In the end, it is retirement, and a noble one at that, so I think he should have a good farewell tour all around the country and just retire happy.

It's good that basketball players of these days are getting good money, back in the day even stars like Pippen would have to go to Europe after their career was over to get some more money, Iverson was broke after his retirement until his new shoe deal dropped, these days even Tristan Thompson level players can retire easily.

That's their way of valuing a player who delivered a championship for them. I think the same thing happened with Udonis Haslem, as he didn’t even play but was still given a contract. There may be things that happen outside the court that make a player valuable to the team, and it would seem unwise to pay a player without expecting any contribution from them.

Well Haslem was different because he spent his whole NBA career with the Heat while Thompson played for a combined 6 teams. Haslem also took the mentorship role and will most likely work in management or whatever for the Heat. Just looked it up and found he currently is the "Vice President of Basketball Development for the Heat" , that already says a lot.

So his role in the organization is totally different than what TT's role with the Cavs ever was.  Grin

Anyway, if the Cavs think it's worth giving a spot to him it up to them. The team most likely won't make a big splash next season anyway if you look at when all the other teams have done. So maybe they will start tanking soon anyway, in case at some point next season they will trade Mitchell.

TT's role, based on what's available to the public, doesn't seem significant, so I understand the comparison. However, I speculate he might have a bigger role on the team behind the scenes, though that's just my personal guess. The Cavaliers are a strong contender, in my opinion. If they had been healthier last season, especially Mitchell, they could have competed well with the Celtics at a high level.

If the rumors about Mitchell being traded next season are true, I think it's a bad idea. When Mitchell joined the team, he made the Cavaliers better. The team should stick with him despite his current struggles due to injury because when he's fully healthy, he's unstoppable.

Maybe Cavs has a good plan towards Thompson and they are trying to figure out his influence on their team since if he could deliver good support to his team then maybe he would get a work from Cavs after he retire.

Just like what Heat done to Haslem he made them as their President of basketball development on their team. https://www.espn.ph/nba/story/_/id/38842503/heat-name-udonis-haslem-new-vp-basketball-development

But for the other player let see if we could see the same scenario. Also there's a rumor that heat wants Mitchell if this will happen then this is really great addition for their team. Also bad decision for Cavs to let go of knowing Mitchell still in his prime and could put up huge numbers for his team.

Seems like the Cavs just give him a pitty contract so he can officially get a "farewell" tour from the Cavs fans. I don't see him having a lot of veteran leadership to be honest.

In fairness to this veteran. He actually is considered as undersize at center position. I mean, If I'm not mistaken he's just 6'9, just an inch taller than LeBron. Again, correct me If I'm wrong but I think LeBron is 6'8?
Anyway, Tristan Thompson averages around 8 RPG during their championship year in Cleveland. So, I think the 5 RPG currently is somehow understandable, considering how athletic young athletes today. This could be his final contract anyway, If anything is not improving for him.

They are both 6'9", and in fact, LeBron can even play as a center if he wants. Thompson wouldn't have received a big contract with the Cavaliers if it weren't for LeBron, so it's not surprising that management decided to let him go since he's not contributing anymore. He's done his job, and there's no reason for the Cavs to keep a veteran who is barely used in the rotation.

Anyway, Tristan Thompson averages around 8 RPG during their championship year in Cleveland. So, I think the 5 RPG currently is somehow understandable, considering how athletic young athletes today. This could be his final contract anyway, If anything is not improving for him.
That number is not worth of a big contract actually, but was probably due to his impact on the court especially on the defensive end.

Reports: Jamal Murray, Nuggets agree on 4-year maximum extension

The extension will keep the talented point guard in a Nuggets uniform through the 2028-29 season.
Quote
Denver Nuggets star point guard Jamal Murray has agreed to a four-year, $208 million maximum contract extension, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Ka-ching!
Well, it will be worth it. He is the one who returned strong after a torn ACL. I actually watched the video of this guy, showing how he is still working out even though he has an injury. He never stopped, rehabilitated himself while also doing some work so that he will still be strong when he returns to the NBA floor and all those hard work paid off by getting a championship last year.
I think he deserves it and this will also keep the star duo connected so that their chemistry can go stronger.

I see a lot of hate saying he is overpaid or they cannot forget his performance in the Olympics but damn, that dude took his game to another level to give the Nuggets their first-ever championship.

He deserves that because he is a true warrior and gave the Nuggets their first-ever championship. He’s 27 years old now, and after four more years with the team, he’ll be 31 before signing a new contract, which I believe he can still get as long as he stays healthy. I’m glad the Nuggets made the right decision to reward Murray for his performance during their NBA championship run. With this good news, I hope he’ll be even more inspired to play next season so they can make it back to the Finals.

He deserve that. I think that the Nuggets is spending their money well to their stars. It's almost half a billion and 5 years for Jokic with $276M + this contract of Jamal of $208M. This is how Nuggets are taking care of their franchise players.
Jamal deserve that contract and forget about those people that can't move on with the Olympics games. It's really hard to impress people there so going back to the NBA, the haters will love him again.

That's likely his going to be role for the team with this season.

Unlike Haslem, he's been there for the team with his entire career CMIIW. Whilst Tristan went to other teams as well and traded there but it is for sure that there's this vibe on him.

"It's good to be back home".

Well, he'll for sure going to get less playing there. The roster that the Cavs has right now is actually good and they can develop more.

They've been far on this playoffs and could also do the same thing and who knows up to the finals.

We will see if he's really a good addition then when the normal games start again.
