If we are all In agreement long term price will keep rising. Then mine now paying for elec with fiat only. Keep the btc and sell about 5-10 years down the road or more. That is my new plan. My power rates aren't the greatest but even if I see 2% diff increases at .10 power I would see roi in fiat by one year by selling all btc till roi. But I think the mine and hold should prove more profitable now. Makes me think that strategy along with those With free power are reason people still jumping on old equip. Seen a post a guy didn't care what you had even back to bfl monarchs. Not sure if it's legit but seems some have a strategy that involves old tech. Got me thinking i should start dumping all my antiques:).
Best regards D57heinz
If you are going on that strategy you would be better off just buying bitcoin and holding it and not spending money on mining equipment. well D57heinz is usa based So his mining has real world tax advantages that don't exist for buy and hodl.

You guys realize that you're just trying to find rationalizations for your hobby/addiction/whatever you want to call it? S5 at launch IIRC had a 200-day ROI at $0.10/kWh with a 2% diff growth. It managed to achieve and even exceed that because difficulty stagnated during most of 2015. S9 now has a ~300-400-day ROI (depending on the batch) at $0.10/kWh with a 2% diff growth. So you are basically hoping that a similar scenario will happen again (bitcoin price crash, slow diff growth) and will last even longer. Edit: actually it's ~500 days for batch 9. Insane. But then some here are trying to say that Bitcoin price rise would somehow help ROI... it wouldn't. Higher price will inevitably cause diff to rise and the S9 will mine fewer bitcoins. You don't want the Bitcoin price to rise while you're mining. You want the price to rise when you're hoarding a stash of coins and not giving them to Bitmain. Once you've given them to Bitmain you want the Bitcoin price to drop.

So that could be a different ROI schedule that could happen much faster, depending on what BTC does in value. And yes there is a argument someone could have just put that fiat money in straight BTC I do see that option to. But that is a different conversation then hardware. Also the other optimistic view is maybe some old gear come's offline and we might lose some old hashrate. Those are two thing's I can think of that an optimistic type might say. I do consider it part hobby and part investment to be honest. I love it that has kept me in the mining game, I just enjoy it chances are always will. I think most still doing it enjoy it as I think you really have to to keep mining long term.

I'm finding it less enjoyable now that the entry fee is $2000 and there isn't much of a choice. Luckily I still have some GPU rigs to tinker with and that should suffice until either Bitcoin mining becomes less elitist (unlikely) or some truly viable alternatives emerge (heresy, I know).

Because high prices like these make my batch 1 value stable. I can list and sell them for 1900 right now as I type.
I think it is very stupid to look at the miner as a store of value. Miner is a tool afterall... A miner is btc in the disguise of a tool. Asic miners and gpu's have been sold used time and time again Sometimes they resell at premium price. An S-5 purchased on Jan 2 ,2015 was close to 300 from bitmaintech due to a price battle against spondoolies. That same miner could be sold for more then 300 on April 22, 2015 due to the price war ending. Many other times mining gear sells at premium prices. When coins rose from 200 to 400 in fall of 2015 gear went up in price. I can sell gear due to a good reputation here I never fuck anyone and always try to offer a bit of a deal. So for instance if: A) coins jumped to 1500 B) bitmaintech sold new s-9's at 3000 usd C) I would or might sell my 5 s-9's I would be sure to offer them a little lower price then anyone else. D) I would sell in btc E) I would sell to people that are prior buyers from me. So for me the price of this gear can be high as it wants to be. frankly this happened for me with sp20's and did not happen for me with s-7's I would not mind if it happens with the s-9's sorry but gambling on miner's cost in the future is really retarded business model. resale value is a (possible) bonus not a business model

well that got bitmain attention, I got an e-main saying I contacted them (ha), and if I did not process clearance demands I am liable for re-shipping. well can you tell me why my items are in Poland? lol nice one! I will not be liable for re-shipping bud. I have been sent ticket tags of an address in Poland, saying I need to fill in details and provide a passport/driving license to polish authorities or it will be declined and sent back. this is just for your info guys, I am genuinely happy with bitmain, this is the first f$^k up, so i'm cool.

Looks like the halving induced diff drop may be materializing. If it continues this could help.

So, I take it the price of S9 hasnt been corrected for halving yet? ... looks outrageously overpriced...
these new batches released after halving are still insanely priced way too high +1 here too, I am just sat waiting to buy at the moment.

these new batches released after halving are still insanely priced way too high +1 here too, I am just sat waiting to buy at the moment. I wish you luck on this. I think they may raise price to keep sales just slow or just fast enough. So back to the s-5 against the sp20 as soon as they killed of the sp20 they raise price on the s-5 and slowed down growth. I thought they would continue on like this with the s-7 but they were looking forward to the ½ they made the network grow like mad.. I thought they were stupid but now 400ph is dead gear and 800 ph is s-7 or avalon 6 close to dead. No 1/2ing in site and they are the only one with .1 watt gear. their best interest is to sell the s-9 at the highest price they can and limit growth of difficulty forcing out all the s-5's and below from now to sept or oct. So if you ware waiting for a 1200 dollar s-9 it wont be for a while. Barring the bitfury seling a .1 watt miner.

So if you ware waiting for a 1200 dollar s-9 it wont be for a while. Barring the bitfury seling a .1 watt miner. They literally killed SP on the S5 and SP20 pricing. SP tried to compete and they claimed to be losing money at the end of it on SP20, don't know if truth in it. But Bitmain won that without a doubt. One thing to is they can also mine them their self's. They don't have to sell every miner to user's like us they can keep some internal. If it makes more sense to keep internal vs selling cheap i'm sure it will stay internal. So I really don't know what to expect on price. It is a interesting time I will say I'm happy Bitmain is selling to home/hobby miner's still. If it was not for them I personally would not be mining currently as at my electricity S9 is only miner that really makes sense to mine as far as BTC goes.

So where are you from? Germany? Uk, but unit going direct to USA, i found out bitmain had put in wrong contact details, as I am being asked customs info for a unit going into poland lol. but my units in USA are being held, so quite a big mess IMO. it happens, I hope bitmain helps me sort this out.
