Offer the controller board for sale on Ebay or something. With my Lightfoot code it can run Titans.

(Just a data point: I think I got one donation for writing/promoting that code. Fixed a lot of people who had Pi's blow up, just noted)

Did you only get a donation from me? Damn, that makes me sick!

I tossed him a titan controller. a split between me and longsnowsm...but yeah, hardly worth the effort..if just us....and you.

Did you get a l3+ 462m is the magic spot, fyi.

Wrong. 475 is magic number on their newest release. Smiley

Did you get an l3+ 462m is the magic spot, FYI.

They work. I have 3 L3+'s yet to go up this week. They all seem to work ok prev to this, unsure of settings I have had may/july/oct batches of them
approx 7 equiv (with l3's) L3+'s up till now..these $1650 3 L3+'s will put me at 10 equiv all work at the data hall w/o issue..up to this point

I guess it will all shake out in the wash...I do know we I will need about $100 buck LTC (as a guide) by Jan 2018 for me to keep the KNC Titans up at

around $5 a day...and that is VERY OPTIMISTIC with difficulty and that price etc

anyway, just to keep it on topic...if I make $5 bucks on titans say I make like $5.75 on an L3 and $11.50 on an L3+...so the diff between a Titan 300mh

and an L3 falling off the world .....mining scrypt wise is not that much...we need some price pump or difficulty will run both over ...again imho and optimistic

the scenario above in my view

im saying the miner clock. set it to 462m for 600+mh stable.

I fully disagree, I have at least 1 L3 from every release they have done and all run fully stable at 475, some higher. You say 462, so be it, but the sweet spot is 475.

Disagree with what? "Lets call it 462m is A magic spot."

Really this isn't the thread but im curious how many hw errors are you getting in 24 hours abouts with that setting? @462 i get about 100+ im betting 475 you're getting thousands if not tens of thousands. Im willing to eat my hat though.

Hi guys.

Two questions.

1. my beaglebone board died a horrible death. Can I just buy another board from the beagleboard.org website and use the RC6 firmware to flash it? I haven't seen anything on YT about doing this.
- I think KNC might have given a hosed second miner (first time I turned it on...I know I know) it came with OS 1.0.2 on it when i tried to update to 1.0.6 its been nothing but problems to the point were it's completely useless now. Not sure if there is anyway to resolve booting issue? I tired the microSD card with RC6 to only find out it made it worse.

2. My miners, the ribbon cables does it matter how they go on? I put them on the easy first, 3 of the 2 miners were working but now none of them appear to be working, even on my good controller which I have from my first Neptune. I haven't tried with my old ribbon cables yet.

Thanks,

I'm surprised this thread is so dead, now that Neptune is profitable again, which is just wild!

smoothrunnings, Yeah that info is buried somewhere in this thread.

1) You can replace the beaglebone with a newer one, if you're sure it's not the controller board, but I don't know if the newest one is still compatible. Safest bet is getting an older one off of ebay or such. I have one board that has started acting glitchy with the latest firmware, but otherwise I haven't had problems with it.

2) Yes the cables have to go on the correct direction, with the red or blue stripe facing the exhaust side of the cube and facing port 1 (JP7 on the board, aka the LCD screen port) on the controller. A faulty cube, or cube connected to a bad port on the controller, will cause the whole thing to mess up. Try one cube on each port to narrow it down.

I was able to get the board working again, however I noticed the 2nd batch of Neptune's are garbage. The 4 run without any issues but when the get hot the dies stop working. With my original cubes I don't have this problem and wonder if its a couple of things. 1. the fan isn't working well since someone mentioned the 2nd batch of Titan fans were garbage and weren't the same KNC fans that came with the first batch, and 2. I should go the same route Titan owners have by replacing the part that attaches the heat sink with smaller part so I can put heat sinks on all the VRMs? (this is more of a question).

Not sure what I need to check on the cube that won't work, would be nice to know if there is any thing I can check, I have a meter, maybe I need to bake the board a bit? IDK.

Then again cubes are cheap. I could buy one from Ebay but I don't or won't know if its a a batch 1 or something else.

Thanks

Check to make sure the heat sink is snugged down enough. It should not move if you try to rotate it on the chip, if it does it's too loose. For that go to the hardware store, get very small washers and put one washer under each screw for the sink. Also take the board off the frame and move one of the rubber things between the front two screws to better provide support under the board. Then put the screws on, heat sink on, and make sure it's snugged down tight with the washers, just till the sink will not rotate.

I have a Neptune and a Titan sitting around. Not sure it is worth firing them up though understand they will be marginally profitable. Thoughts?

It will depend on your electric rate, but the titan should definitely be profitable (here it's $0.16kwh and after deducting that it makes about $10 a day)

Heh...KNC miner ...wise move taking all that investment money..and then *gasp* stating that the "halving' was coming...(boy, we are surprised) we just can't make

any money with this bitcoin mining anymore here in Sweden etc...due to the Chinese...

https://news.bitcoin.com/knc-miner-bankruptcy-shutting-down/

truth be told, these clowns (ex-bankers some of them) never believed in crypto or BTC...thus took the money and ran with it...leaving investors in the lurch....

The funny thing is IF they had waited 4 months IMHO, they would have been golden and wracking up the cash yet.....

serves them right, when the money hit on their first batches of ASIC units...it was like all that cash turned them from Nun to Porn Star in a period of 6 months

this was around January 2014......and they went full evil from there, again in my view.....

Anyway, just an aside for the thread.....serves them right thou Smiley

Old Style Legacy Plug & Play BBS System. Get it from www.synchro.net. Updated 1/1/2021. It also works with Windows 10 and likely 11 and allows 16 bit DOS game doors on the same Win 10 Machine in Multi-Node! Five Minute Install! Look it over it uninstalls just as fast, if you simply want to look it over. Freeware! Full BBS System! It is a frigging hoot!:)

I agree KNC should have stuck to making the hardware and not double dipping and they MIGHT still be in business today.

You got to admit though, they made some pretty good hardware with the Titan. The fact that it's still profitable is quite frankly amazing....

I got up to #12 at one time...I just make a BIT more money (even with the hassle) on www.prohashing.com

so like the 'gold digger, I am" I left pooler at www.litecoinpool.org the pool is still as backup pool, and went for the $$$....

(I'm such an ASIC slut...sigh)

yep, at over now with repastings $100 bucks plus per cube....and gen tarkin software and mods etc below.

1) new fan  per cube ..tossed old one in a box

2) knc heatsink same ...tossed old one in a box

3) replaced fan with 2x the speed at 120% the noise

4) replaced knc heatsink for Maxumark's bracket set that frees the dc/dc's to the airflow

5) got dc/dc copper heatsinks for above 8 heatsinks

6) with the high-speed fan etc and airflow, it is best to clean the boards with alcohol and repaste every 6 months would be ideal
also use better thermal paste (not as much)..and viola

7) you need Gen Tarkin's 3rd party firmware product that does things I have on record as knc saying was impossible, temp shutdown fan shutdown
chip speed adjustments downward for heat...the list goes on and on

Cool I and Maxumark use dual 1280 platinum (new) server PSU's with factory backplate to slide into (with the PSU guts like a regular PSU for voltage protection etc) and
instead of 16 AWG wire and using knc y adapters....use 15 AWG wire and direct plug into the cube...no y adapter weak link...they still brown out eventually but that
may take more than 1 year. We run them as pairs of 2,560 watts and 5 leads.....not an issue .no burn out problems..no PSU problems more than 14 months plus?

9) on probably 3rd if not 4th repaste for all cubes (with cleaning)

10) when/if eventually a plug on the cube does fry and melt plastic..lightfoot hates that I say this..but have had no issues on the 1/2 dozen or so units I run using
just the 15 AWG bare plug slide into the pins ..make sure the tab is up...now this MAY be because it is 15awg wire ask lightfoot..that I have no issues..

11) the damn things are just too 'evil' to die...not sure what kinda Swedish voodoo they did to keep them working this long...but pretty sure baby ASIC's were
sacrificed in some manner.....

so yeah, amazing they still work....but jeez.. quite the chore!

Big warning here: If you ever plug the cube in so that the bottom three pins on the PCIe plug go into the top three pins on the socket, or put it in upside-down, the following will happen instantly:

1) The cube will be damaged, all drivers blown.
2) The ribbon cable will burn.
3) The controller will be damaged, needs new FPGA and power chip.
4) Every other cube on that controller will be permanently destroyed with no ability to repair.

Doing the above puts +12 on the ground plane which destroys the hashing chips pretty much instantly. I have seen this happen several times with people, whole miner is gone.

So if you're running on burned connectors always check every plug before powering on. One mistake does it.

yep..nice little tab up on my modified 15 awg wires....but hey it has to be better then replacing KNC Y adapters every 6 months as they blew (really, it was that often

I kid they not) no blown y connectors even on the ones I use to keep the now bare pin cubes working

again 15awg wire seems to help along with no crummy Y adapter in the loop to burn out either

but yeah, you have to check this....I suppose I could put some paint on the tab just to be double sure in the future

KNC used cheap PCIe sockets on their boards. Switching to all nickel plugs makes a fairly nice difference on the burn rate.

Typical build a thousand dollar cube and save a dime by using a cheap component.....

Yeah, well paying you to solder the proper plugs back in ...or just using the bare pin with the knc Y adapter hack..I went with the hack (then again LTC for all 6 of them

until my most recent one this month was probably 4.15 per LTC ..so it made sense then I guess the above ugly hacks previous to the LTC price pumps)

so anyway..in my case ..likely with the stable platinum server PSU's dual 1260 each or 2520 or so watts if I remember right at 96% eff) along with

the 15 AWG wire and heavy duty plug on the PSU end you feel prudent....I'm just gonna continue with the bare pin mods...but the 15 AWG wire over kill is likely the

part that has allowed them not to go toaster city...in my case anyway...again I think I have at least 6 with this mod..have a buddy with a lot more than that...at

his data hall...none have fried again after this mod and the full Maxumark brackets/gen tarkin firmware/15 AWG wire/better fan/ heatsinks on dc/dc's etc etc etc)

so anyway, what I do (or did) I suppose if anyone out there is reading this with a plug fried...if you got to send it in to lightfoot get a price on the plug replace

on the cube...but again mine burnt..pin hack...and worked after...so no need to send them in....but it is of course as lightfoot says 'at your own risk'

KNC devices being evil and all...MUST DIE SOMEDAY....being purely evil and all thus Lightfoot acts as the devil's advocate and keeps FIXING THEM

and of course...then they don't die..rinse/wash/repeat...as lightfoot yells 'live my creations' on each cube revived.....(evil lair there, let me tell you!)

so I got to draw the line someplace to allow them to brick themselves or we are all lost.....(frigging skynet...the beginning of skynet, I just know it.....)
