@ phillipma1957 - Until there is better Mining software for NVIDIA, AMD is still KING for the coins we care about for now which is ETH and ZEC.  More importantly if you're dual mining.  Also NVIDIA is very flakey in 6 and 7 GPU setups due to driver and mining software compatibilities.  This is why I'm still 100% AMD. 

ZEC is good with NVIDIA; can't say for the rest of coins though ~ ETH is poor for example.

Eg. EWBF and Excavator miners drives high ZEC hash (even higher than ZEC on Fury X at very low watts).

Many good cgminer forks for other familiar and unfamiliar algos like DCR, LBRY, Lyra2, X11Gost etc.

Pros: ZEC killer (and only ZEC though, I wonder what clicks in ZEC and NVIDIA architecture), impressive wattage - better than AMD

Cons: Bloody expensive...

Started building my first ZEC rig on twin 1080ti, hopefully this will be an equivalent of a 7-8 rig AMD ZEC rig, at half the watts. Patiently waiting for Phil's weekend review.

my advice is build 3 six card amds
for every 1 two card 1080ti

why not get two 1070s with low power limit they will do around 930 zec for around 300 watts the 1080ti should be doing like 1k for it to be worth it

Part of my model for mining is sale of gear  that is near ROI. 

So the 1080 ti zotac  will be sold  to a friend that has a gamer wife.  I will sell it to him in about 120 days.

if it does 670h it will earn around 5 bucks a day  - 1 for power = 4 x 120 = 480 I spent 704  so  I would be 224.  If I sell it to him for 375 it is a good deal for him  and I profit 150  .

I do this with many of my cards.  He has a 970 in his  wifes pc system  she will love the upgrade to the 1080 ti.

The 1080 for a mean ZEC rig would be my best bet.

The R9 380s are good in their hey days.... but the older R9s are power hoggers, so I would stay away from them... might as well consider a brand new RX480/470 for about 220-200 price range.

the 1080 is good if it works.

it will do 510 zec at 170 watts  counting  your entire system at the wall on a k-watt meter.

that card runs around 500-550 new.

I now have a 3 card nvidia rig for zec   about 580 watts  for 1830 h :

 two 1080 ti's and one 1080

I suggest that anyone with  3 six card amd rigs   should have 1 three card nvida rig.   Use 1080 ti and 1080 for density as  three cards giving 1800 plus zec is very nice

You can do better than that...I've seen Newegg on Ebay selling brand new non-reference 1080's for $419, and 1070's for $319

A PicoPSU question (from a newbie miner so be gentle) -  I've seen advice given to power your risers off the same PSU as your mainboard to avoid troubles, but with a Pico there is neither the connectivity or capacity--thoughts?

Right now i'm interested wich card is better to go with. I'm considering between rx470 & rx480 also what is the difference for mining between 4GB and 8 GB versions? Which brand and model is better to use for mining ? Which one is more reliable and user friendly in maintance, upgrading, etc...

I read all the comments part 1 thread and I'm currently at the 15.page of part 2.  I couldn't wait more to ask a few questions;

1. As far as I understand risers helps us to connect more gpu to the mb, am I right? That's why you guys use?
2. What about PICO? What is that and why should we use it?
3. Why do we use pci-e cables, what for?
4. How non-reference or reference cards effects mining hashrate? Which one should we choose it and why?
5. What is breakout boards for?
6. I'm keep seeing "I'm Pulling X watt from the wall" What is the wall reference is here?
7. What is the difference between ATX PSU and Server PSU?
8. Why PSU efficeny is important?

I know these are beginner questions and I know that if I search google little bit I can find what they mean but an answer to these questions from a miner perspective, will help me to understand more easily.

Also, I would like to thank jun, philip, finsky and all the others who made the part 1 and part 2 amazingly useful. I've learned a lot and will keep learning more.
