what are the most profitable settings for btc-e?

The "Starter" settings for each exchange are pasted below. You can take this as a relatively safe starting point and then use the back testing engine to improve upon them according to your own risk profile.

Please let me know if you need help at any step of the way.

We recommend the following starter settings for Mt. Gox:

Short EMA: 10 Long EMA: 21
Buy 1: 0 Buy 2: 0.25
Sell 1: 0 Sell 2: 0.25
2 hour time window.

The following settings are for Bitstamp and BTC-e:

Short EMA: 20 Long EMA: 42
Buy 1: 0 Buy 2: 0.15
Sell 1: 0 Sell 2: 0.1
30 minute time window.


The difference in settings lies in the fact that EMA works differently between high trading fee and low trading fee exchanges.

Are these starter settings for bitstamp and BTC-e correct? I have these (from the welcome email):

Short EMA: 15    Long EMA: 31
Buy 1: 0    Buy 2: 0.15
Sell 1: 0    Sell 2: 0.1
30 minute time window.

We updated them to 20/42 recently because it worked slightly better, I would encourage you to change them to the new ones but it is not a radical difference, that is why we didn't send an update notice.

Unlikely this is planned - but I'll ask just to be sure... With hosted coming, are there also plans for self-hosted without a GUI? e.g. run just as a CLI program/daemon? I currently run it on a home server VM with a gnome/Chrome installed. It'd be awesome to be able to just run it as a service in the background without a GUI needed - and perhaps configure it through a web interface?

  Unfortunately I don't think we can pull that of in the near future, we are quite overwhelmed with development tasks and this is a very specific request. I will make sure it is discussed internally for a possible future development.

I keep getting problems with pop up not showing tradesm charts etc, only blank window with some icon like when you mistype image path. Sometimes refreshing helps but most often not.

  Have you installed any new apps or extensions recently? Those may interfere with Butter.

Please email me (Pablo@Butter-Bot.com) the information below and I will take care of you post haste .

1. Go into the "manage extensions" page.
2. Enable "developer" mode by checking the "developer" box in the upper tool bar.
3. Go to the extension and click on the "generated_background_page.html" link.
4. When the new window opens, choose the "console tab"
5. Copy and paste the info there to pastebin.com as close to the time of your issue as possible and send it to me.

And:

1. In the developer tools open the network tab. 
2. If it's empty, press F5 to reload the extension and wait a few minutes until there are some requests listed. 
3 Then right-click the list in the left pane and select
"Save as HAR with content".
Please scan the file and remove your API Key from the text and send it to us.
This will help us resolve your issue much more quickly.

Did Bitstamp go down? Bot API not working and went to the site and am getting "ACCESS DENIED" on the Bitstamp website. Like the whole site is down.  Never seen that before.

yes, I understand that, but if you back test it against the last 2 months or less, you make more money by just buying and holding bitcoin than trading with the bot.

   EMA, as a long term strategy, is designed to be tested against several months, I would suggest 6 months or more (not a get rich quick scheme). This is because in the short term we are likely to have mean deviating trends, like this massive surge or a feral crash, which are so outside the expected average that they skew results. Over the long term, the expected number of average trades will tend to average the results of mean deviating trends out (Think: The Law of Large Numbers), this does not happen over the short term.

Now there are short term benefits as well. EMA is a non-sentimental way to gauge the market. We had a discussion here several days ago, when BTC was reaching 200 and it looked like it would ebb about getting out and trading for Fiat, but the bot kept us all in the market and we are now hitting 400.

There are certain periods where absolute buy and hold will have good results (like any trading strategy, EMA is not infallible), but the bot is better because it makes the buy and hold call for you; I wonder how many people thought it peaked at 200 and sold out early. In the end, EMA is really an intelligent sort of buy and hold trading in that it eliminates the human element; and over the long term the math suggests you will come out ahead. Community feedback is the best indicator of the bots profitability.

This is not to say EMA can not be improved, as I have said before, we are diligently working on getting out the kinks and we will have something out as soon as we can make sure it is better than what we currently have; we are always open to improvement.

What I am saying is that if you backtest against the surge of the last month, you'll see buy and hold beating butter bot, and it's for the exact reasons you say.

EMA seems to be a good strategy for certain situations, but it's probably not the best strategy for a bitcoin bubble.

ok, will do.  Just right off the top of my head, the ability to load other algorithms would be cool.  Also, save back testing settings to compare different strategies.
