I view addiction as a sickness or a disease. If it is a disease or sickness, it can be healed. It can be cured. It may be hard, but if you put enough effort into it, you are serious and there is enough support from the people that surrounds you, it can be done. There is no easy fix but it is doable. There are some addictions that I personally have eventually dropped. It is not gambling addiction, but it is equally hard to drop.

It's true they can stop with a strong intention and that will encourage them to stop being gamblers. But the problem is that those who are addicted don't think about it that way. No, that is a easy cop out for some people that has this problem. Most addictions have some link to the hormones in our brain...and gambling is one of those. The brain will secrete certain "feel good" hormones when we do certain things, like using drugs or the adrenaline rush that we get from gambling.

Harmless addiction really? Are we sure that he is a real psychologist? Or maybe what he mean to say is hobby because you are right, that there is no such thing as harmless addiction. If you are once a gambler, it does not always mean that you will pick up a hobby which was related to gambling. Doing so will only trigger your brain to play gambling again.

Reading is much better than doing a card trick but you should also limit your self and don't just read for hours and hours because you are still considered as an addict that way. Yeah, gambling addiction is not a habit anybody should ever pray for, your story is almost similar to a friend of mine, the only difference is that, that of my friend is way worst than yours.
