Hey @phillipma1957 what are my chances of getting two Onda v2 8 slot boards by the end of the year?  I don't need to take delivery but want them paid for in calendar year 2017. 

I'm pretty sure I don't want to deal with risers anymore.  Just built my second four card 1080 Ti rig and the risers were a bitch.  One of them ended up being bad or incompatible and it costs me a ton of time.  Plus, risers are such a kludge when I see that I can build a multi GPU system with one of these new motherboards.

out of 5 i have one is totally bad, three good ones all 8 slots working and another only 4 slots working

Ah crap. Maybe I should have ordered extras I only ordered 5 of them to test.. if the fail rate is that high I probably should have doubled the order. Ah well. Crossing fingers.

Well only 4 slots working wouldn't be too terrible since I plan to only use 4 so I can space my cards out for better airflow and run the rig on one 1200 watt power supply.  In reality I wouldn't want $3,000 worth of cards running on a flakey board.

Is there a consensus regarding which riser-less mining mobo is the best?  Or maybe need to wait for the category to mature?

I ordered (2) of the boards with the expectation of low quality control, but if both end up working I was contemplating selling one of them. I placed the order on Friday (12/22) and paid the extra $16 for "express" shipping, but even still it says it will take 10-15 days to get here, so not before the New Year rolls over.

AFB line Delta fans are a lot quieter than the famed FFB line fans and their derivatives - AFB are a "whoosh" of the air moving, not a "scream" of the many-bladed prop interacting with the many-bladed flow director.
Innosilicon used AFB line fans (but the HIGH END ones) on the A2 and they're not quiet but they don't "scream" from 2+ rooms away.

AFB fans also have a LONG lifespan at high temp 100% speed operation - not quite up to the old Rotron Muffin series but the Deltas are also moving a LOT more air and spinning at a lot higher RPM.


 And now for some MAJOR wierdness - anyone else notice that 1070 prices on Newegg are THE SAME OR HIGHER today as 1070 ti prices?

Of course I could have friends and family order them.  But could I use my credit card and setup accounts for them and have them shipped to them?  If I use my credit card then it'll have my billing address and the number would be the same as my Newegg account.  Wonder if they match any of that up?

Also, how do you pick between the different GTX 1080 Ti cards that EVGA makes (or others for that matter).  I like the hybrids, but curious about all of them.  Only difference I can see other than the cooling and fan arrangements, they all look the same.  The lower end models have slightly slower base and boost clock frequencies, ranging from 1480 / 1582 all the way up to 1582 / 1695.  It's easy enough to overclock with software.  Does that mean the lower end cards can't clock as high overall?  Does it really matter for mining?

At the end of the day their settings can be over ridden by your afterburner settings, all it does is make mixing cards a PITA but if you're buying all 1 card it (IMO) doesn't matter 1 bit.

What you're paying for with the cards is really the fans and heatsinks etc they put on them, which is why the Hybrids are more money, they're all literally built using the same boards (just about). All companies do is add their little fans, heatsinks etc.

risers is a must when temperature is an issue, you need proper spacing, onda boards are great for water cooled gpus like what phillipma1957 posted up thread because the heat is passed from gpus to the radiators and you can point them where ever you like.

got 4 years old risers still mining here, their molex connectors are turning black-not from burning but from old age (elements).

before using risers make sure you scrub those white stuff (soldering flux residue) under the pcb board before using, always have a proper usb wire, don't rely on the usb cables included in the riser pack....although they can be good at times (because when troubleshooting you have to deduce/process of elimination like when you use the good quality cable and it didn't work you can say that it is not the wire, you proceed looking for the problem)

I was thinking of creating onda style rig---risers are screwed on a plywood (replaceable bad pcie slot)

I am skeptical on the sturdiness of onda boards...we'll see, I still prefer good quality gaming boards because manufacturers did make sure they are built durable..I recently bought second hand ~ 160$ z170 sabertooth (enthusiast are upgrading to z370), still have 4 years warranty from asus..........after I bought it i come to realize WTF!! thinking I got a ~8 year old s775 motherboards mining for 4years already which only cost me 30$ each

"gaming" boards are more about cpu/memory power phases and stability (for those monster OCs), better sound, "optimized" networking etc. stuff that mining boards do not need. miners are a different beast. all they they need is full size slots, decent spacing between slots and a BIOS that caters to multi gpu configs. basic power delivery to the cpu and memory is fine as no one is going to oc the cpu and memory (well maybe cpu miners but then get a gamer mobo for that).

back in 386/486/pentium/p2/p3/p4 days boards were very basic, and i had rigs that ran for pretty much for years 24/7 and they were still running when i retired them. and basic is all a mining board needs.

I used to buy ONDA gpus for HTPC builds on Aliexpress a while back and the cards always performed great. Shipped from China, yes, but the packaging was always great and they are still running to this day. They make decent components for decent prices, should hold true for the motherboards as well.

Thanks for the heads up Phil. Apparently, card prices have moved back to Crazy Town. I picked up some 8GB Red Dragons and Red Devils for $249 and $269 four weeks ago from NewEgg and now they are $400. I picked up a set of these Diamond MMs just to be able to offset some profit from the year. I haven't owned a Diamond card since the 7970s.

if you use the ONDA B250

in the spotswood build

the board does not see that much juice.

At this point  The   kwatt meter runs at 1060 watts.

Most of that  enters into the gpus via the pcie connections.

I doubt that the 8 slots see  320 watts.
It is why I prefer the Onda B250 and the  3 molex plus 3 sata connects to the mobo.
Note the Tokamok 1500 watt Platinum has  6 cables  for  the molex and sata connects.
It has 6x  2 headed pcie cables that are 16 ga.
3 feed  3 1080tis
2 feed  4 1070tis
1 remains empty

I see the board does 4025 sols

and you get 1060 watts at the kwatt meter.

considering there are 17 fans in the build    you do get good numbers  for sols per watts  around 3.8

I would imagine   that higher power just drops efficiency.
