Lol, look at that! Sri Lankan former sport minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage smoking some fine weed nowadays. He's basically blaming sri lankan team that they fixed the match.

“In 2011, we were to win, but we sold the match. I feel I can talk about it now. I am not connecting players, but some sections were involved,” he said.
I was thinking there was a possibility for a scandal here but i lost when the sports minister said that the selectors were involved in loosing the match and the World Cup, it is funny the selectors selected a team just to reach till the final and then loose the World Cup to India  Cheesy. I am sure the retired players who played the game will respond harshly for this stupidity.

I am feeling this is not serious issue in Sri Lanka as politics is too much involved in cricket board and we have history of many personal issues and statements like this hopefully they will not take this serious and this all stupidity will end soon as or media will hilight as we have lock down and not other things to talk.

This fixing of Worldcup 2011 issue has been popping up periodically and almost everytine from the Srilankan side. Why don't they investigate it once? Why are they all accusing each other? In my opinion, it was a fair match and India played well to win the cup.

^^
Few former players and more importantly Sri Lankan board earned the reputation of being ridiculously corrupt, Even ICC was investing some old players due to corruption charges. I shared the news for lolz only. Grin

I guess some of the world cup winners have had faced the same issue after couple of years. Can't remember the exact one though. Srilanka has tried their best to win the world cup but no luck. It's now a proven true that "Laziness brings the evil mind"  Cheesy

I don't know any inside story also. But I remember that Srilanka gave tough fight against India. The full crowd was supporting India, still srilanka managed to put a good total on the board. And for the first 5-10 initial Indian innings, India was very much on the backfoot. India really fight hard ( Virat, Gambhir, Dhoni) to win the match.
If the minister knew about the fixing why he is claiming after so many years.

Quote
I would not involve the cricketers in this. However, certain groups were definitely involved in fixing the game,
And what does it means ?? Huh.
Whatever if they have any clue they should investigate and proof. Or he should apologies to Indian fans and SriLankan cricket team.

I think that the Srilankan board and few players from that squad are still not able to digest that they lost a winning match. It has been 9 years now and still, they are accusing each other. Are they always high or they are dumb?

Former Players are not accusing anyone for anything. It just one former minister making some noise, Which i believe is result of unknown grudges he holds against the Sri lankan cricket.

Srilanka team has been morally and physcially down after they have won the last and single worldcup in the history. Since that time, the players are not upto that performance mark and their performance is on the decline just like West Indies team.

I disagree with that. After the winning of 1996 word cup Sri Lanka was a team who dominated the world cricket for the next few years. Yes, from last one decade they could not perform well. Maybe it's because they were not able to produce players like Muralidharan, Chaminda Vaas etc.

There is also too much internal politics, they have very few good players left with them and it is the responsibility of the board to find good talents which I do not think is happening. Srilanka was a very good team that was feared in International tournaments ages ago.

We can't say SL didn't find good talents, there are two legends called Mahela Jayavardne and Kumar Sangakara who played really well to keep their stats up to the top level but they also got retired now they got talents but have less experience which makes them to be in pressure while handling tough situations that is the place SL cricket board did mistakes...

As per your opinion, how many players are there in the current Sri Lankan squad, who can be termed as legends? Back in 1996, they had quite a few including Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga, Roshan Mahanama and Chaminda Vaas. Even during the first decade of 2000, they had legends in their squad, such as Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga. But the same can't be said about the current squad.

@Mersal while there’s no doubt about the quality those two added to the Srilankan Cricket team, but I feel the discussion here is relating to the current Srilankan team, which unfortunately doesn’t have top class player’s in their squad. It’s also pertinent to note that Muttiah Muralitharan had acknowledged this fact that the current Srilankan team doesn’t have quality player’s, and he further believed that these days all Srilankan player’s care is about making money, and hence they’re less focused on performing in international cricket matches.

Quote

Sri Lankan cricket has hit an all-time nadir and the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan blames it on the paucity of talent coupled with lack of passion among the current generation of cricketers for this steady decline.

Sri Lanka is a cricket crazy nation, but the problem is that they have a smaller population when compared to India or Pakistan. However, the biggest issue in my opinion is the lack of a proper domestic set up. Domestic cricket in Sri Lanka consists of a few cricket clubs playing against each other. There is no State/Province based teams. And this means that outside Colombo, and to a limited extent some of the other cities, there is no proper domestic setup.

Politics plays major role in cricket selection that is why talents got skipped, there maybe a unknown player in domestic level but people who got the power keep them unknown for some reasons. But in India IPl played major role in finding new talents in the recent times and this year we got no luck to see more new players. I am feeling this is not serious issue in Sri Lanka as politics is too much involved in cricket board and we have history of many personal issues and statements like this hopefully they will not take this serious and this all stupidity will end soon as or media will hilight as we have lock down and not other things to talk.
In my view if you are holding a position of power you should not spread rumors without any evidence and put the team under fire and that is what happened here, the sports minister is claiming that the players let go of the World Cup which means the team lost the match because they took money to loose the match which is a serious allegation. I understand that the minister just want to create some stupid sensation like every other politician.

If i have to make a guess on Srilankan's team current situation then i would say that they messed up pretty bad for one reason.

Transition period : Every team goes through this period when senior players or so called legends takes retirement. India, Australia, NZ or in some extent England got lucky but Sri lanka, Pakistan, South Africa not much. Senior players and management of Srilanka failed to groom new players at every front. Corrupt board didn't help their cause as it directly effected their domestic cricket.

Those who are interested in the future of Sri Lankan cricket, please answer my questions:

1. Why the SLCB is never staging any international matches outside the Colombo-Galle area. Why no matches in the Tamil dominated Eastern and Northern province?

2. Why there are zero Sri Lankan Tamils in the domestic competition? (Muttiah Muralitharan was not a SL Tamil, he was an Estate Tamil).

3. Why there is so much resistance in spreading cricket to cities other than Colombo and Galle?

4. Why cricketers from rural districts need to come to Colombo to pursue their career? Why no facility is available for them in the tier-2 cities?

5. Why the SLCB continues to be controlled by the Sri Lankan government?

Why the race card in sports, if there is an exceptional talent they will find a way either in or out of the country.

3. Why there is so much resistance in spreading cricket to cities other than Colombo and Galle?
The infracture needs money and from where they will raise the amount and if it was that easy why the resistance.

4. Why cricketers from rural districts need to come to Colombo to pursue their career? Why no facility is available for them in the tier-2 cities?
Is it not the situation in every country where you need to move to the place where the major training facility is located

5. Why the SLCB continues to be controlled by the Sri Lankan government?
Pakistan cricket board is controlled by government if i am not mistaken and so does BCCI as they follow what the government orders.

For any sport to develop and produce talents the authority needs to go to the grassroot level to coach the young talents and conduct tournament to showcase their skills and thereby getting selected in the domestic setup and if they perform well then getting selected in the national teams and if they lack the vision then those countries will fall back.
