He is 39 years old. A decade ago, 35-36 years was considered as the upper limit for most of the players. Times have changed and now players remain fit for extended periods. What might have prompted this sudden decision may be the postponement of the T20 World Cup to next year. MSD was probably targeting that tournament as his farewell series.

Another shocking news is Raina joined hands with Dhoni. Shocked

https://www.timesnownews.com/sports/cricket/article/suresh-raina-joins-ms-dhoni-in-retirement-announces-news-through-social-media/637590

Even though Raina is not currently playing in the international format he is one of the best player in all the three departments of cricket, miss you guys! I was big fan for both of them but excited to watch their actions in IPL.

Honestly it is a really shocking news for the cricket lovers in India even for the whole world because he got fans from all around the world, so no more blue jersy on MSD and only Yellow love from now on. Cry
It was a really shocking announcement and i wanted to see him play in the T20 World Cup as his final game and this fucking pandemic has created a mess for everyone and to one of the greatest player India has ever seen and we will not see a captain and a talented wicket keep like this who could change matches even during difficult situations.

Suresh Raina also announced his retirement along with MSD.

This had to happen one day because he cannot play cricket forever however i wished we could see him play in the last match and this news does not come all of sudden. Thanks to IPL and other such series, where we will still see him in action for few more years. India will miss him for a long time.

Check this:

https://www.newindianexpress.com/sport/cricket/2020/aug/12/csk-expect-ms-dhoni-to-be-part-of-ipl-2021-and-2022-ceo-kasi-viswanathan-2182424.html

The Chennai Super Kings clarified a few days back that they want Mahendra Singh Dhoni to represent them, for at least three more years. The CSK CEO (Kasi Vishwanathan) also made it clear that they will be retaining MSD in the next round of IPL auctions. This might have prompted Dhoni to give more importance to the franchise league. His IPL contract (₹15 crore per year) is much bigger than his national contract.

I think it's the saddest news from cricket among this pandemic. I thought we could see him last in the T20 world cup that was scheduled to happen this year. The core of his career started after the T20 World cup 2007 and could have ended with a T20 world cup too. But nevertheless, I think he got pretty much well deserved applause throughout his career and no doubt that atleast on the performance metrics he is the Best Captain not only in India but throughout the World. Sad to see even Suresh Raina retiring alongside him. But yes I hope to see both of them playing for CSK in IPL in coming September which I am pretty sure BCCI are going to Organize.

<hr>
On the IPL issue I think one reason BCCI is so keen to have IPL is because they know that everybody being in lock down situation would give them ever high TRP. We already saw a few retro shows being played and getting huge TRP. I think BCCI is expecting the same from IPL.

Yes, BCCI got the required permission from the government, they are all set to organize the tournament. Currently they are looking for new sponsors. This year IPL can be the most view one, due to the lockdown as well as probably it is going to the be the last IPL for MSD, Raina, ABD.

MSD is one person who epitomizes the whole of the Indian diaspora who lives and breathes cricket. My era was of Sachin and trust me when I say he is God believe me he still is and I thought no cricketer in India will ever be so big. But what MSD did for Indian cricket lovers is ....He made me cry ......I cried when India lifted the ICC world cup in 2011....and believe me, I and my friends who played gully cricket cried in unison on a conference call. That was the Joy MSD gave us with that Six he hit at Wankhede. He has given us various moments that made us happy and cry with joy. He is the greatest entertainer Indian Cricket will ever have.

Now the controversies started about Dhoni's sudden retirement, it maybe entirely wrong but something we have to look out for.

Anyone remembered where he faced the last ball in his international career, it was against NZ in WC 2019 and it is such an heartbreaking moment for every Indians at that time but it was very long ago right after that he is ignored from the squad for many series and the reason said was he has given rest for such small series so that he can perform well in the important matches. But again in 2020 the grade A players doesn't even get any contract from the BCCI so officials already decided that he is not fit to play anymore?

No. Check the previous posts. The CSK owner has stated that Mahendra Singh Dhoni would continue to play for them at least until 2022. I am not sure about Suresh Raina and AB de Villiers, but I don't see any reason for them to retire so early when they are earning good amounts from the IPL. Times have changed. Nowadays cricketers are retiring at 40-42 years, which is an increase of 5-6 years when compared to the situation a decade ago.

They have taken retirement from International cricket and IPL as per my understanding is a domestic T20 tournament. Hence, I do not see any reason for MSD or Raina not to play the IPL. They can play as long as their body allows them and as long as they are selected.

Both Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are like the public face of the Chennai Super Kings. I guess they will be included in the team even if they are out of form. Dhoni is invloved in the selection process and he was active even during the auctions. Also, they have very good relationship with N Srinivasan (who indirectly owns the Chennai Super Kings franchise).

Today only I found that both these players announced their retirement, its hard to accept but these things has are supposed to happen because of ageing factor.About playing in the IPL they are going to play for this season for sure since the training session already started in Chennai ground and also media mentioned that he announced his retirement while he was in Chennai, because chennai people love them more than anyone and it has been the second homeground for MSD.

Both of them will play in the IPL but its a sad news that they have retired from the International Arena. Its always a sad to hear good players getting retired. Dhoni has been a super star for the indian cricket both as a captain and also as a wicket keeper batsman.

Both of them will play in the IPL but its a sad news that they have retired from the International Arena. Its always a sad to hear good players getting retired. Dhoni has been a super star for the indian cricket both as a captain and also as a wicket keeper batsman.
That's nothing if being sad, dude. Everyone have to go retired someday; no matter how good they play. Dhoni had the right decision while Raina took it early I guess but you know in recent form of Raina, he barely has any chance of being selected in the team. Therefore, I guess he was right to retire as well.

Dhoni surely deserve some good farewell from Indian team and Board but sadly right now due to Covid 19 its not going to happen we was expecting this retirement after 20/Twenty World cup but now this event is not going to played so he decided to announce this which is also not bad at all.

I don’t know about you’ll but MS Dhoni had no other option but to announce his retirement because team selectors had already decided that he would not be selected again, and with IPL coming up he felt that it was the best time to announce it and then fully focus on IPL. Also I hope that BCCI will arrange him a farewell match later on this year, though I’m not sure what’s the protocols for this but he deserves one last swan song on the field.

That's true. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been associated with the Chennai Super Kings for so long (since 2008 when the IPL started), that he is regarded as a native of Chennai. He still represents Jharkhand in Ranji trophy cricket, and therefore people from that state also regard him as their own. His father's family is from Almora in Uttarakhand. But Dhoni has never emphasized about his Pahari roots in any occasion.

There is lot of politics going inside even if it is a sport because lot of money and pride involved in this sport.I don't think there will be any farewell match for him but surely he is the best of his kind and hero in the mind of billions so everyone is waiting for his arrival on IPL and the chanting of DHONI,DHONI,DHONI,,,will keep continue years more...

Why blame the selectors? Dhoni's strike rate was well below average in the recent T20I and ODI matches in which he played. Even when the required rate was very high, he failed to step up the momentum. And despite this, the selectors included him in the squad. I don't believe that MSK Prasad told him that he won't be in the squad for the T20 World Cup. Because it is not Prasad's decision. The selection is done by a combined team of coach (Shastri), captain (Kohli) and the selector (Prasad).
