Santiago since his draw with Jerwin Ancajas had an 11-1-7 KOs record. His lone defeat was the controversial majority decision of Gary Antonio Russell. He might be underestimated here but he is really capable of beating Donaire by decision.

Right, but we all know, but Donaire will be deliberate in this fight and won't take Santiago lightly as his career is on the line. And because he will be motivated to really win that belt again. I'm looking for his left hook again to finish the fight.

Donaire is fortunate to have Santiago as his opponent in a title match; he's not a very tough opponent, so everyone is expecting Donaire to win and get a belt in his division again. Not having to fight Inoue is a big relief for any contender, so they can now compete on a more level playing field. I'm not saying Donaire will win easily, but at least this opponent is not ranked amongst the best in this division.

Sure he is one exciting boxer to watch while fighting. Even at his age, he is given the chance to win a champ title.
There are certain Donaire fights that really live long in my memory.

The promotion I think wanted to see him up there in the ring and defend the title while the best in this division but it's still risky when he is challenged by a younger contender. This match makes sports betting more like guessing.

There's always that risk though, remember when Donaire tries to move up in division and badly beaten and bloodied by Nicolas Walters and majority says that he is no longer in this prime. But then again he become a champion at bantamweight and beating young and upcoming fighters, as it he is the own stopping them from them becoming a champion except for one Naoya Inoue. And so this might be another case of that, although Santiago is not that young, but I think he is too small for Donaire, and his ko percentage is not that impressive I would say at 40%. So all advantage goes to Donaire and if he executes everything into perfection and didn't go old overnight, he will win this fight.

He is one best fighter in his prime , but of course all boxer will fade and I believe that Donaire is starting his, but hopefully that he will get it back and before retirement? there will be belt in his name to hold till his gone..

He's not being challenged though by young boxers but just doing the task he was assigned for.

Correct, he was able to still maintain hist status because of the high level of fights he got and the results, all of them are either TKO/KO except Inoue. So then the promoters likes Donaire for being that, representing their organization as a  champion and that's why he is given another chance again for the WBC bantamweight.

And Donaire is not taking this fight lightly maybe just because the boxer that he is going to face is way below in the top 5 of the ranking. He is still going to be a threat to matter what but Donaire will be ready.

I just hope that he will not go up and chase Inoue because it's not a favorable matchup for him.

Yes and that's why rankings plays an important role in the whole boxing industry because we will likely know who will gets to face who next or who will be fighting for the title if someone vacates their belt. In this instance, WBC's #1 is Donaire which is why he's got this opportunity, the only thing that keeping him from participating is if he will reject the opportunity, but that's not likely as most boxers would love to have it. And yes, sooner or later, Donaire will be called again to defend his belt whether he like or not.

Each boxer would really be aiming for the glory and having other division belts is something that could show off that you are really indeed a champion. This is where most boxers really been targetting and the rest
would be talking about pure money or income that they would get but we know that it is really just that part since they are fighters/athletes on the first place.
Nonito Donaire would really be trying out his best on getting more belts yet retirement might already that upclose which it would really be just that normal that he would
really be having those aims.

Without a doubt what Donaire is doing is impressive, however if we take a look at other sports we are seeing that star athletes are able to have longer careers due to an improvement on our medical knowledge or a change in the sport which makes this easier, but even then only the very best can keep themselves focused for so long to the point Donaire at 40 years old has yet another shot at being a champion, even if I think getting the win will be a challenge for Donaire.

It's only a big challenge for Nonito Donaire if the boxer he's fighting with is a KO artist, or has a better ranking than him. Here, I don't see Santiago being a huge threat to Donaire. Even at his age now, I think Donaire can still dominate this opponent.

Santiago is not even in the top 10 in the ranking if the report is updated.

Unfortunately you might not heard of Mike Tyson upset to Buster Douglas. Later on we found out that Tyson didn't do his training very well, he didn't take it seriously and Buster Douglas was like 40:1 underdog during that fight.

So that is big lessons for boxers after that fight, that even the great Mike Tyson will fall for that kind of mentality against a inferior boxer.

But Donaire is different. He doesn't have the personality of Mike Tyson, who was into drugs. The way I see Donaire, he is a serious man who puts a lot of hard work into his passion. So, if he loses this fight, it won't be because he didn't train hard. It will be because Santiago came out as the better fighter on the fight night.

Quote
"All I was interested in then was partying and having sex.

"I didn't consider Douglas as a great challenge. I didn't even bother to watch his fights. I had easily beaten everyone who had knocked him out.

"Besides having sex with the maids, I was seeing this young Japanese woman with whom I had had sex the last time I went to Japan.

"The day before the fight I had sex with two maids at the same time. Then two more girls the night before the fight. I think I lost most of the weight by having sex with Japanese women."

Discipline and hard work, that makes Donaire one of the best of his generation. Remember that he has a brother as well but it turns out to be very different for Glen.

But for Nonito, for sure he has to work very hard in his career specially during his prime as he beat a lot of great boxers in that era and become a champion and up to know still fighting at age 40. So we can say that he is a work or art.

Being out of the prime can be use as an excuse for Donaire if he lose on that fight but I doubt he will be easy for Santiago since we see a lot of commitment he made on his career and provably he show all of his best to defeat Santiago on this match since this can be a great career finisher if he decide to retire after this match.

Sure he is one exciting boxer to watch while fighting. Even at his age, he is given the chance to win a champ title.
There are certain Donaire fights that really live long in my memory.
He is one best fighter in his prime , but of course all boxer will fade and I believe that Donaire is starting his, but hopefully that he will get it back and before retirement? there will be belt in his name to hold till his gone..

Yes, Donaire will be one of the most memorable fighters in history. Donaire is not just a clear first ballot in the Hall of Fame but If I remember correctly, Donaire was top 2 pound-for-pound by the bible of boxing, The Ring, during his prime years. Donaire also received many awards from boxing's 2 most prestigious groups, The Ring, and BWAA. His unforgettable knockouts over former champions Vic Darchinyan and Fernando Montiel were both KO of the Year. Donaire was also a 1-time Fighter of the Year. So many legends in this sport yet only a few of them are able to receive awards from either The Ring or BWAA.

Back into this fight. Everyone's rooting for Donaire to win another title at this stage of his career and hopefully, he will get it.

That's the kind of achievement that people will not forget. There are few champions in the Philippines, but they have not achieved the kind of success Donaire has enjoyed, except for Manny Pacquiao, who is the only eight-time division world champion. Even though Donaire is getting older, his passion for sports is still there, so we cannot count him out just because we think he should retire already.

"snip"Donaire at 40 years old has yet another shot at being a champion, even if I think getting the win will be a challenge for Donaire.
It's only a big challenge for Nonito Donaire if the boxer he's fighting with is a KO artist, or has a better ranking than him. Here, I don't see Santiago being a huge threat to Donaire. Even at his age now, I think Donaire can still dominate this opponent.

Santiago is not even in the top 10 in the ranking if the report is updated.

https://www.boxingscene.com/rankings

If we based it on both fighters' experience, skills, and power Donaire is miles ahead but I'm looking at Donaire who beat Oubalii and Graballo, but if age finally caught up with Donaire even a non-ranking Santiago can beat him, we can guess what version of Donaire will show up in the first three rounds of the fight, I'm hoping the fast and strong one, so if ever Donaire have a choice to have a good exit and hang up his gloves.

This is a good matchup for Donaire, and I have a feeling that he will be the favorite in this fight once the odds are out. His opponent has three losses, but is a very active boxer, having won all three fights last year.

I believe most of the posters here will be rooting for Donaire, but it would still be nice to put up a poll to determine who has the majority of the votes.

If Donaire is listed as the favorite, I doubt he will be a heavy favorite. He's coming off a big loss against Inoue, so he doesn't have much momentum, unlike Santiago, who is currently on a winning streak.
And to think that Santiago is a lot younger compared to Donaire, even if Donaire will be the favorite here, surely this fight will be hard to win for Donaire but if he will focus on their camp’s game plan and improve his performance in the ring, then we will see Donaire beating up Santiago inside the ring. But I must say, Santiago is never an easy boxer, with all his winning streaks last year, his vigor and fierce in boxing is incomparable.

Nonito Donaire Jr. already tests his strength with a much younger opponent at 39 years old. That liver blow he did was deadly. It was against fellow Filipino Reymart Gaballo who was undefeated before facing Donaire and in fact, might be better than Alejandro Santiago. Adding to that, Donaire also experiences fighting Naoya Inoue, the current strongest bantamweight fighter in the world, not once but twice. The experience of fighting Inoue is already a good reason for Donaire not to struggle against Santiago.

I don't consider Alejandro Santiago an easy opponent for Donaire just to be clear but experience-wise, Donaire has lots of it. Donaire also encounters several strategies already that were used against him in his entire fights in the Bantamweight division because of that experience. I doubt Santiago has a new trick on his sleeves that can surprise Donaire.

There's really nothing to improve for the veteran anymore but more like polishing mistakes and keeping the game to his advantage. He is beyond his prime, this is not the time to take the risk of throwing haymakers that may ruin his chance to get the belt again. Be a veteran, and use whatever he learned from his broad experience in this division.
Santiago will surely be the aggressor here because this will be his first highest title fight. I would not be surprised if he will try for a knockout.
I also doubt a heavy favorite for Donaire like 1.10 - 1.30. It's good news for gamblers like me. Cheesy

More likely Santiago will be 3:1 underdog against Donaire, that's seems to be the trend for this handicappers in boxing.

Yes, nothing more to teach this old dog, he is already a veteran and maybe we can see some of his old move already but it's more polished. But for sure he will go down to his favorite left hook to finished the fight.

Or counter more as he is also known to just go box in and out with that counter left and right to confuse Santiago.
