However, Donaire is now fighting a different opponent, so we'll most probably see the power that we're talking about in this fight.
That's guaranteed. The fact that Santiago does not have the KO power of Inoue means this fight might last longer if Donaire does not knock out Santiago. We all know that Donaire is still hungry for a win; he wants to be at the top again. And now that Inoue is not a hindrance anymore, he will certainly not waste this opportunity to come back at the top.
This will be an exciting match up for both boxer, as they try to get the belt being left by Inoue and with Donaire, this is a big opportunity to reclaim a championship title so better for him to start working on this and be more aggressive. Santiago is young with a good record as well so Donaire should not be complacent here if he wants to get another win for his record. I’m rooting for Donaire here, I wish him a good fight and will be ready to place a bet for Donaire.

We will see if Donaire has still the power inside the ring, now that Inoue is out for this weight division.
I have the feeling that he wants to retire as a winner once and for all. Couple more years, and he's likely to hang his gloves.
I am rooting also for Donaire on this match, despite his age, because he is quite active so not hard for him to prepare for this fight.
Bookies may favor Donaire on this one, his current ranking  whether on The Ring, WBC or WBA is also higher than Santiago.

As per majority of speculation, he still has the power, it's the question on if he can still pull the trigger, and I would say yes.

I have the feeling that he wants to retire as a winner once and for all. Couple more years, and he's likely to hang his gloves.

Yes, as most of the high level boxers, they want to quit while they are on top, although the biggest contributors though is that boxers losing fights and can't compete and pull the trigger is the biggest reason why they don't want to do it.

I am rooting also for Donaire on this match, despite his age, because he is quite active so not hard for him to prepare for this fight.
Bookies may favor Donaire on this one, his current ranking  whether on The Ring, WBC or WBA is also higher than Santiago.

For sure we all gonna root for Donaire to win again and become the oldest bantamweight champion and his chances are good, just matter of execution and with his experience, he might do it again.

He once hold that record when he beat NORDINE OUBAALI.
NONITO DONAIRE BECOMES OLDEST BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION IN BOXING HISTORY BY CRUSHING NORDINE OUBAALI WITH FOURTH-ROUND KO

If he wants to make history again, he should try to become a champion again and retire as a champion. On paper, it sounds good, but if Donaire is still aiming to make more money after winning this fight, I have no doubt that he'll continue fighting. His status has already gained the attention of the fans as the oldest champion who is still winning and continues fighting challengers.

When the realm of Pacquiao was over, Nonito Donaire was one of those boxers that somehow reminded me a fresh prime Pacquiao. Both fighters seem to have the speed and the power to dominate the ring with their current weight divisions. That is also the reason on why Donaire has been nicknamed as the "Flash" due to his speed and accurate punches plus abilities.

A fight between Donaire and Santiago is definitely a sight to behold and a privilege to watch. Though he has aged and his speed is not as quick as before, it will still be an explosive fight given on how hungry he is for winning a title. Santiago is not an easy opponent and this would definitely make Donaire more aggressive in his playstyle. Nevertheless, I am definitely excited to witness and watch this match as I am rooting for Donaire to win.

I think Pacquiao and Donaire had their peak at almost the same time.  They also get popular in the same era but in different weight category although Pacquiao is older, their career shine at the same time and so it losses its brightness at the same time.  Although Donaire got another chance to get a title this year, I think his career is almost over.

Well, it will be worth watching for us Filipino, since we always wanted to see our Filipino boxer to win a title fight.

comparing their Boxing record, Donaire seems to have more advantage than Santiago. this will be an interesting match to watch, I'd like to see how Santiago will fair against someone who has more experience and has more advantage than him.
The only advantage Santiago has here is his age, LOL. Donaire is old, but like a fine wine, he still has that timing, and with his power, he can definitely KO his opponent. I have not seen the boxing highlights of Santiago, which is why I'm very confident that Donaire will win, but let's see if it will change my mind.

sorry if this might be a bit off-topic. it looks like they already have someone who is ready to take the fight in case one of the team decides to not continue with the match. from what I've read the reason Moloney's Management Bob Arum of "Top Rank promotions" has a problem with Donaire's Management "Probellum"(check here for the article).
That's the kind of politics that can destroy a potentially great fight. Of course, if both promoters do not agree, the fight is not going to happen.

I completely agree. Nonito Donaire might be older but in boxing, that makes little difference. This is not football, where each tiny bit of physical endurance is essential. This is more about strength, experience and skill, which Donaire has heaps of. People put way too much importance on age and completely ignore the fact that legendary boxers like Donaire have an amazing track record which has not wavered much. I also am betting on Donaire this fight.

Promoters only pretend to say that fights "won't happen" its all marketing strategy to get peoples attention. I don't fall for it.

I guess we can somehow compare the sport to football especially when it comes to endurance because this sport is all about physicality as well and that factor plays an important role to the boxers to have a good stamina to last a much longer fight or as long as needed. Without stamina, boxers don't have any strengths to pull a vicious punch to their opponent. But somehow, these legendaries, be it in football or boxing, they can always find ways how to preserve their strengths and stamina because of the experience they got and age factor won't matter if the foe doesn't have what it takes to defeat an experienced boxer with the likes of Nonito Donaire.

One of the dilemmas of boxers is retiring at the right time, I doubt that he will retire after this fight, I want him to retire because if he wins, it is the best exit for his great career he has nothing to prove anymore but boxers only retire after they suffered humiliating defeats from relatively unknown boxer, Donaire refuses to retire when he loses to Inoue because Inoue is at the height of his career.
Win or lose he should retire but I doubt he will if he wins but if he lose he'll think of retiring.

Yes, and again, he will reclaim his belt and make a 3rd reign in this bantamweight division. So a lot at stake for Donaire in this fight. I agree the money is still there to motivate him and other boxers and continue to box.

I also do agree that once Donaire retire, he will be in the HOF because of his accomplishments. So this is going to be special and sweet for him if ever he beat Santiago and holds that record.

And the fact that we are talking about Bantamweight here, this is Donaire's forte. It's just that Nonito Donaire is really to the highest level and since the Monster is now out of the Bantamweight, we will see if Donaire still has the strength to dominate other Bantamweight.

In case Donaire won this match, I believed he will, he will be the oldest boxer to still achieve a world title.

He got that achievement previously when he beat Nordine Ouballi at 38 years old.

this division is no doubt donaire's forte or comfort zone. so i am also rooting for him to win this match even if they are saying he's already old for this. worry if he is inactive for years and years, but his recent fight was only last year.

I agree, this is Donaire bread and butter division, we have seen in his prime years how he destroys everyone here and then like 4-5 years ago he has a resurgence in his career when he opted out to go back to bantamweight.

And it's only Inoue that really derail everything for him. But since Naoya is now at super bantamweight, I still thinks that Donaire can take this division over this young guys.

It is sad that after the dedication and practice of Nonito Donaire , the game ended as cancelled so again he need to adjust and re training for this different opponent.

Alenjandro is also a Good contender for Donaire and maybe will refer my bets in this one.

hope that He'll get a win this time after his loss , and also to become more active as he is closing for retirement age so he need to have more fight before then.

I haven't gone through with most details yet but I am happy to see that Donaire is going to have a championship match again. This is what he really needs to do before the possible retirement that he might announce just after the match.

I third the motion.  Cheesy Let's make a poll.
I am sure that the votes will most likely for Donaire. Looking at the stats of Santiago, he may not that be an easy opponent. I'll find and watch some videos of his matches.
A win before he retires is a good one, this can be a big match for him and its good to see him back and have the chance to get a championship title.
Santiago is also a good boxer and a younger one compare to Donaire but I think age will not be an issue here, they almost have the same record thought Donaire lose more but the win is pretty impressive. A big match for Santiago but I think, with the best experience Donaire will win on this one.
It is always best for Boxer to retire with with title as this will Hold his name in the fame or frame till he dies , and donaire had lost His so he must take it back before considering or the finalization of retiring.
but i do agree that he will win this fight and sooner will get to the title again and may take back.
always respect this boxer as he has a low profile character and good attitude inside and outside the ring.

The news just came out about a championship fight in the bantamweight division. We were worried that we might not be able to see Donaire fight soon when his last fight was cancelled. However, this new championship match has been announced and we will get to see him fight soon. Although the specific date has not been released yet, it will be announced soon for sure
Not sure if Donaire can still keep up with young guns but I'm rooting for him to win this match between Santiago. I think Santiago is a decent fighter and now that he's in his prime compare to an ageing Donaire I think the chance for him to beat one of the greatest was likely 60/40.

Ranked number 6 in WBC, sure he's a decent fighter. However, Nonito would beat him with his experience and expertise.
The only advantage I can see with Santiago is his young age. Saw him once against Ancajas, but he doesn't impress me, though he have a good footwork and moves a lot around the ring, but might not be enough against Nonito.
I am more excited if Nonito and Gaballo both win their respective matches, so they could have a rematch and give Gaballo a shot of redemption.

This is a good thing that another opponent is already considered for Donaire. It was unfortunate that his match against Moloney was cancelled. But I hope the schedule for this new match would mean that his initial preparations against Moloney won't go to waste. So it should be soon, not too far from the date set for the Moloney match. There might still be changes in the training and strategies prepared because of the change of opponent but at least Donaire has already started getting into shape and there's still enough time left. He's got an easier opponent now.

People changed their view on the chances of Donaire winning when he was matched with Moloney, the majority thinks that Donaire will lose, but with this new opponent, they think Donaire will easily win, so it's like probably a downgrade of the opponent, but it's better than nothing and at least this is a championship fight.

That's for sure, but there's still plenty of time to prepare, so I'm sure Donaire's camp won't be having a problem with that.

They're probably celebrating that Donaire is now facing Santiago. Santiago is probably not as dangerous as Moloney. Santiago's power is also much lesser than Moloney's. Santiago is shorter as well and has shorter reach also. This match will definitely be a lot easier for Donaire.

And yes it is a title fight. Donaire couldn't ask for more. Of course he is still a strong and dangerous boxer but we all have to accept the fact that as you age you will have to lose a lot of your boxing capabilities. Donaire will probably be more confident this time and will win over Santiago.

If Donaire doesn't want a tougher opponent, then he should be happy with his. The odds aren't yet available, but I believe Donaire will be the favorite. It's just sad that he's coming off a big loss against Inoue, so I hope he's still very confident, and we'll see his signature KO punch again.
