So now there's no more guessing whether the fight is going to push through or not and it's good to hear that finally we have date.
July is going to be a bigger month for boxing, this one, and after a week, Fulton vs Inoue and then Crawford vs Spence.
Nice update, bro. At last, Nonito Donaire Jr. will now return to the ring officially as it's now over a year since his last fight, June 7, 2022 to be exact, in a rematch against Naoya Inoue where he loses for a second time. He's now in the retirement period therefore being idle for long is not a good thing anymore to him. We can now finally see if Donaire can still keep up with some boxers from 118 now that Inoue is out of the division. This fight might also be the fight where he will decide what's next on his boxing career, to continue if he wins or to call it a game already if he loses. On the other hand, a big break on Santiago's side as he did got the chance to be a title contender right away without the needs of climbing into the top ranked.

Finger crossed*, I hope Donaire is still capable tp deliver his maximum performance despite his age. We know that skills don't easily deteriorate but speed and punching power goes with age. This will be a testing ground and at the same time a chance for Donaire to show us that he can still compete with the young ones and be able to beat them to snatch the title. On the other hand, a big break on Santiago's side as he did got the chance to be a title contender right away without the needs of climbing into the top ranked. It is indeed a big break for Santiago and if he is lucky/talented enough to defeat the legendary boxer then his career will be boosted and will be aligning him to be one of the elites.

Sometimes legends need to have one good last fight before they decide to retired and this might be it if Santiago will perform well and knockout Donaire at early rounds. And I think that would be enough for Donaire to conclude his career and give a chance for the younger figthers to shine in this era and make their own name especially Santiago this is his chance to be on the spot light if he get the win here in this fight.

Agreed. The only reason why Donaire is still continuing his career here in boxing industry is he thinks that he can still have a good fight and defeat the younger guys at 118 but if the opposite will happen especially if he will be defeated without a doubt or worse, a KO/TKO. I think that will be an enough reason for him to believe that his time is already finished because he's not the same Donaire anymore and most probably, cannot become a champion again before he hangs up his gloves.

Also because his last fight was against a truly stronger one in the 118 and that is Naoya Inoue so he thinks he can still match with other boxers in that division. If some boxers in 118 will now put Donaire to another loss, that's the time maybe that he will consider retiring. If happened that he still dominated Santiago here, it will give him think that he can still face young boxers despite his age. Maybe after he wins here, he will still have 1-2 fights and that's enough to make him fight in a unification match at the age of 42-43. If Donaire loses and Santiago wins, there is no sense of continuing his boxing journey now and it's good to hang his gloves now. He cemented already his legacy as one of the well-known PH boxers who established a great boxing career.

His initial plan though is to go to 115 lbs and fight another legend in Juan Francisco Estrada (after he beat Chocolatito). And then as fans, we have some concern though if Donaire can make 115 lbs without harming his body as we all know that he is old already. Fortunately, Inoue decided to move up to 122 lbs and chase more belts. So Donaire chooses to stay and was given the chance to have another crack at the belt. And so this fight with Santiago is another chance for him to held the belt and put his name in the record books as the older bantamweight.

The good thing about Donaire is that he can move down in weight, particularly the superfly division if he wanted to and yeah that was his initial plan, to fight Estrada as that time, Inoue was ruling the bantamweight division and he knew that he stood no chance against the Japanese Monster even if they fight for the third time. The good thing about this fight is that it already has a date and this will be held on July 15, so barely four weeks from now we would watch our very own Donaire to break his own record as the oldest boxer to capture this version of the belt in the bantamweight category. Nonito Donaire vs Alexandro Santiago vacant title fight joins Martin vs Harutyunyan on July 15

Better to decide and give way to new sets of potential champs, it's been a while as what the post above was said, after a year of missing limelight now he's back and will try to get the belt back or maybe if he lose this fight, the decision of retiring might take place and be announce.

And Donaire is hoping that this will be his 4th title reign at bantamweight.
The first one is when he knockout Montiel (who wouldn't forget that fight? we saw Montiel having like a seizure in the canvass when Donaire hits him with his signature left and Nonito was still in his prime that time).
The second one is when he won against Ryan Burnett in the WBSS and capturing the WBA and eventually losing it to Inoue in the finals of the said tournament.
The third one is when he knockout Nordine Oubaali, this time it's the WBC belt, but then again his title reign was cut short when Inoue unify the belt with a second round knockout against Donaire.
Now, another chance for Donaire to become a bantamweight champion the 4th time at 40 years old.

We won't forget all of his remarkable wins. Donaire is one of the most exciting boxers in the sport, so even at his age, we are still anticipating seeing him fight in another championship bout. Just imagine if he wins again; he will be praised for becoming a champion despite his age. Although he may not become the oldest champion, it will demonstrate the kind of passion and discipline needed to remain competitive at this stage of his possible retirement age.

Donaire actually has a relatively old age and deserves to retire but as you said since there is a chance to get the champion he is still waiting for some fights for the title. There have been many championships he won during his career in boxing and he is one of the many boxers to have world titles in all four weight classes. I'm still curious and waiting who knows who will be his opponent in fighting for the title in his class.

According to the report, it was Alejandro Santiago who sparked the creation of this thread. Unfortunately, there is no specific date provided for this particular fight. So, for now, we can continue to speculate and discuss who the better fighter is. Based on my observation, the majority of the posters here are rooting for Donaire to win, despite the age disparity between the two contenders for the belt.

Right! There is no need to further add an embarrassment to his career and be a stepping stone for the young ones because there is no need for him to prove anything as he already became one of the best boxers ever that has fought at 118. A retirement after a loss in this fight is the best thing to do but if it's the opposite, he surely need to have a fight much sooner if possible because time is not on his side anymore.

Time is no longer a friend for him, but who knows as long as his body still can take heavy punches and his speed can still avoid being corner maybe he will continue, but if he lose this fight better to retire and focus with his business, helping new sets of upcoming champs, I think he can help in developing more rising stars.

As far as we know he can still fight, it's the timing though, Inoue is rising up and they are in the same division. And I will agree that age has a factor for Donaire losing those 2 fights. However, since Inoue has move up already, Donaire has a good chance to win another belt, maybe this fight we will see him becoming a champion again. That's why we are all interested and excited to see this fight. And now that we have a date, it's barely just a month from now.

Yeah, the Montiel knockdown was that scary, and if I'm not mistaken, it was reported that Montiel suffered a hairline crack on his skull with that powerful left hook by Donaire. And it seems that Nonito also defy time, not that he can beat Father time, no one does. But when everyone thought that he is down and out already, he comes back strong and win another belt. Obviously, another record could be set by Donaire if he won here as the oldest bantamweight or oldest boxer to win a bantamweight title.

This fight doesn't pose a significant challenge for him; we shouldn't consider Santiago's age as a determining factor, as he is not a high-ranking boxer like Inoue, who truly dominates the sport. It is evident that, according to popular opinion, Donaire would effortlessly win this match. However, if our prediction proves incorrect, retirement should be the logical next step for Donaire.

He shouldn't be overly confident in this situation, considering his advancing age. It's evident that Alejandro Santiago is not a mere leftover in boxing, given his respectable ranking, which earned him the opportunity for a championship fight. Retirement may be the next step for Donaire if he fails, but let's not dwell on that just yet. His determination to fight and, importantly, to continue earning money is still evident.

It's not him who is overly confident; I think it's us. We fail to respect Santiago's ability to defeat Donaire. Well, it can be understood since fans tend to be emotional, one-sided, and prone to exaggerating the capabilities of their favorite fighter. Donaire may be getting older, but it doesn't mean he will be beaten by a boxer who isn't as skilled as Inoue. That's just my guess.
