Anyone have any experience with the AsRock 970 Extreme 4 MB?  I just put a rig together using this board and I am experiencing some strange problems when running multiple GPUs.  I am having a problem with a GPU plugged into the PCIE4 slot.  It starts up and as the hash rate builds to peak it shuts down.  sgminer declares its sick and disables it.

I can run GPUs in the other PCIE slots with no problems.  But this one slot seems to be a bit finicky.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and the AMD 14.9.1 beta driver package.  Some problems with 13.12 driver package.

I know this is a long shot but I am hoping there is a trick to getting this to work and someone out there know it.

Thanks.

P.S. Its not the power supply.  I have two power supplies connected using the ADD2PSU module for a total of 1400 watts - way more than I need for 4 R9 290s.  I tested both PSUs and they are fine.
and u change GPU between slots so its sure its not a faulty GPU?
u run powered riser cables? did ya try switch riser cable between slots to find out if the cable is the problem?
i had on my 6x 280 one card too which got faulty from time to time it was the card not the slot
and on a 3x 750ti mini rig i had troubles with a riser cable after change it problems solved

I tried every iteration of GPUs and slots.  I also switch riser cables around.  None are powered and I do not believe they need to be with just 3 GPUs.  In any case, I am running 3 in other slots with no problems.  Only PCIE4 is giving me problems.  I can run 1 GPU without any problems and I tried this with every GPU and all worked fine.  I also ran a video memory test on all the GPUs and found no errors.

The only consistent factor in everyting I have tried is that the card in PCIE4 is the one that eventually gets sick and shut down by sgminer.

What model GPU ?

How much power your PSU ?

Confirm its a motherboard issue by swopping a good riser and GPU to the bad slot and if it goes bad you know its motherboard.

What I do with my rigs where I run 5 GPU on a motherboard, win8 and install NO drivers let windows take care of it and it works perfect. I run 2 x 1000W psu per motherboard.

best mobo i found was a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 with a cheap ass semperon CPU. no problems at all running 5 GPU.

I can second this post.  I have been running the same m/b and amd combo for months with no issue.  I run (6) Nvidia 750ti's on that one board.  All powered risers and a cheap ass power supply.

the orphan block is discarded and it will not affect your stake power.

How do you run 6 GPUs on this MB?  It has only 3 PICe 2.0 x16 slots and 2 PICE 2.0 x1 slots.

I am using 3 R9 290s but I want to add a 4th

To answer the earlier questions, as I mentioned I tried different GPUs and risers in different slots.  I am certain that the risers are not the issue.  The same is true with the GPUs.  I have run 2, 3 and 4 GPUs and with different combinations.  Again, a GPU that works in one slot fails in this PCIE4 slot.  This one slot is the common denominator in all of this.  As for the Power supplies I am using Thermaltake 750W and Thermaltake 650W right now.  Both are Gold rated.  The 750W powers the motherboard and two GPUs drawing about 600 watts.  The 650W P/S powers the third GPU and draws less than 300W.   I can balance this load more by powering the second GPU with on cable from each of the two power supplies.

This configuration has been running stably now for over 24 hours.

GPU1 is plugging into PCIe x16 slot 2 using an riser cable.  GPU0 is plugged into PCIe x1 slot 3 using a riser cable and GPU2 is plugged into PCIe x16 slot 5 using a riser cable.  THIS WORKS!

If I move GPU2 to PCIe x16 slot 4, sgminer will run for a minute then the card slows down until sgminer declares it sick and disables it.  Eventually, sgminer crashes.  It is clearly a problem with plugging a GPU into this slot.  From what I have read on the internet some people have had success but others have had the same problem as I do.  What I am trying to find out is what is different between my MB and those that work.

Thanks for your help but it looks like I will have to keep digging and experimenting.  I think I can plug the a 4th card into the second PICe x1 slot and it will work.  But leaving the second PCIe x 16 slot empty just seems wrong.

just get the motherboard I specified and your problems will go away, some are just a pain in the ass to get working. Sounds like it could be power issue tbh. I went through the asrock board when setting up my farm and they were crap, GIGA ones are rock solid, have more PCIE slots and are cheaper!

In bios turn everything you can off (sound, serial, onboard vga etc) set the gpu bus to 1x and try it.

Also I only use the 'short' risers the ones that fit in the pcie slots, use them on non pcie slots as well they work perfectly.

power supply sounds tight. 290 suck a lot. i use 1000w to power 2 gpu and mobo, then another 1000w to power 3 GPU.

If your using win7 you WILL get hassle, switch to 8 and it will be LOTS smoother.

ps

DONT power 1 GPU from 2 PSU you will blow yourself up.

http://dmdpool.digsys.bg has added some more horsepower to aid the script kiddies in pushing more DoS in. :-)

The web interface should be a bit more responsive.

we working now on noblecoin transformation to run our wallet code with their coin specs
and the next step is enable merged mining for both coins which will be the core of DMD-Groestl Merged mining Family

until this is done no code changes at DMD wallet will happen (it runs rockstable now and there is no need to hurry)

later on we will start working on new Wallet UI and sort the feedback we got
and select what of them we can implement in new wallet additional to the new features we already have planed

Second half of month is referal bonus 2% of investment u did refer to us (and the investor get 1% bonus shares for tell us a referer wallet)
time to spread the news!

http://multipool.bit.diamonds/
cloud@bit.diamonds

whats the best way to invest into DMD
in my opinion u should split ur investment
50% direct buy DMD and 50% into dmd cloudmining
this way u maximize ur profit and stabilze the coin upwards trend
and get additional DMD over time not only from POS but also from DMD Cloudmining
http://multipool.bit.diamonds/
cloud@bit.diamonds

if ya invest into DMD cloudmining
make sure u tell me a wallet of a already existing DMD cloudmining user
so u and he get bonus shares

im sure u will find such a wallet if ya ask in this thread if u found us without referal
this way u still can get the bonus shares

Yeah I mined on yaamp occasionally but I am moving away from other algos and sticking with DMD

i will also be hosting other algo pools and coins on my server but only as a mirror of miningfield, I wont be using them lol

Setting up HeidiSQL on host so I can examine and if needed work on databases Smiley
