rig in air-conditioned home means your PUE ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_usage_effectiveness) is 2. For comparison recently Facebook boasted that their coolest DC has 1.07 PUE and as another example my DC1 has PUE of 1.03. PUE of 2 essentially means you pay twice for your rig's electricity. Not much to be proud of, really. AC is definitely killer on efficiency. I have to run AC on warm days, but usually only between the hours of 2pm-5pm. Also the AC isn't aggressively run, 80F, keeps the cards cool enough. It hurts, but the setup is still profitable. Rest of the time box fans take care of cooling. Also its a window unit, so its just cooling one room, not the whole house. |

First PR-2000 off the line. Generates over 2.0 GH/s using 3x 6990s at stock clocks.
How loud is that? I have one 6990 in a Antec P183 and the fans go nuts when I mine. Even underclocking and undervolting, it's still blasting the fan around 2500-3000RPM to clear the case, and that's with the two egress and one ingress case fan going full bore. I've always been taught that leaving the case open is not actually good for cooling but I have a feeling these cards are a case unto themselves. Do most of you running 6990s run open? I'll be putting in a spare 5870 soon and I don't want to have to go the water cooled route. (At that point I'll sell it all and just mine on my Mac Pro.) Should I just go to Home Depot and buy a box fan, open up both sides of the case, and let it rip? :-) Careful with those box fans. Some of them can consume quite a lot of juice - easily above 40W which is more than a good 140mm fan. I'd go with extra case cooling if possible. Also it strikes me that the P183 doesn't have good air flow, but I could be wrong. |

Well aren't you clever bitcoin 2 cash. The amount of know it all on this forum is amazing. What I mean is I do not pay by the kwh so power doesn't have to factor into my mining costs.

nope, if you do not pay for electricity either than you can claim PUE of infinity... Google, Facebook, Yahoo, M$, Sun, SGI and others will be green with envy  Well, you can claim an impossible PUE of 0 :-) PUE = facility power / equipment power If you don't pay, it is as if you provide zero power to the facility, but somehow your equipment gets power anyway... magic yay! |

Well, as long as it is as cold around here as currently, I also have a PUE below 1 (even with paying my own electricity) because I have a use for the heat generated.

The box fan was a bit of hyperbole. The inside of the case is otherwise quite cool. The 6990 vents out from both ends, so I've cleared paths each way, removing one drive bay and moving an egress fan there as well to maintain lower air pressure for that path, although a fan venting *out* through a filter/mesh goes against all the rules of thumb over the years. I don't have a reliable way of measuring flowing air temperature at the moment so I can't capably determine the temperature differential between the card's intake (in the center of the card) and its dual exhaust. I'll tell the wife this is the time of year to have an HVAC consultant look at our furnace and guide him over to my computers as well. :-) I'm about this >< close to buying a watercooling kit and waterblock for the 6990 and seeing if it solves the problem. I'm coming around to the idea that I have a defective card, but after removing and reseating/pasting the heat sink I've voided the warranty. This would also eliminate the need for an extender so I could put my 5870 in this box as well. Watercooling kit and lines + waterblock + 6990 will go fast on craigslist to some gamer when I'm done with this thing and I'm throwing distance from the Cal campus. :-) (Jeez, I just now realized what those holes with gaskets are for on the back of the case...) Hmm, a watercooling kit will definitely solve any cooling issues but bear in mind that a typical waterblock will set you back $150 or more. I know for example koolance asks around $160, but you may be able to find a cheaper waterblock somewhere (ebay maybe?). As for the warranty, what brand is your 6990? If XFX they will still warranty you even if you did all that work to it. Heheh..hey when you get tired of the card (and assuming there is no hardware defect) give me a shout and I'll pick up the water cooling kit + card from ya Hopefully you'll be able to improve cooling and solve the high noise issue. Out of curiosity what is the fan currenty spinning at - percentage wise ? |

Here are a couple pics of my rigs. There are 3 4U machines in the rack (1 up high and 2 down below the printer). I've taken the covers off the lower two to show a close up of those rigs. The upper rig has a 6990 (about to have a second 6990) and the lower two machines are both dual 5970 rigs.   |

Wahoo ... I think this is our first on display rack stack ... although some more commercial secretive maybe into that already (vlad, ArtForz, etc).
The racks/cabinets is going to be the way to go for bigger set-ups .... I think a few more months and more big iron techniques and engineers will start to take over from the gamers.
We could be looking at the end of the IBM dominance for big finance machines if this model for massively distributed/networked capacity takes off.
