I went for a water-cooled setup in a rackmount case.  Next step is to throw it in the rack and connect it to the hot tub.


Pigtails from each waterblock attached to inlet/outlet manifolds (made from PVC pipe fittings), with fuel filter on the inlet:


Reservoir made from 5 gal bucket and fountain pump:


Car heating block as radiator, with fan:


And, since I believe in a diversified portfolio, carrots:

you should have skipped hte water cooling and instead used the money on a camera that can focus

water cooling is okay, IMO, but bigger radiator with low flow loss could be handy. sadly it would be more expensive than car radiator :/

6xHD5870 sat on top of an old SC440 2x650W+305W PSU with 2x3 port PCIe switches - having problems getting all 6 working so I'll probably be split them up later today.

I have three digital cameras, and they all suck in different ways.

No, but it's pretty tight.  I might check the level once a month at most.

I currently have three dedicated rigs, two of them using this test bench:



I hadn't seen many builds like this yet so I thought I would share. It fits a full ATX mobo and large power supply and if you have a dremel tool you can easily carve out new holes to tie down cables to. The HDD/Optical mounts underneath but if you're like me you are just booting from USB.

I am going to be putting together another 2 x 6990 rig and have a third one of these test benches on the way. When I get home later today though I will post up my two 5850 builds. Cooling is as easy as setting them on a shelf by a window and putting a small fan in front of them on low to blow the air outside. That literally is all I need to do at this point. The bench is actually sturdy enough to just tote around by the handle you can see in the corner.

Works good man, and I'll get my actual builds pics up when I'm home from the 9 to 5.

What do you guys who are using risers do with your video cards? Just lay them around? I'd like to see pics of that sort of setup.

built custom brackets to mount them. I have 4 cards on a cheap foxcom board using 1x risers, a 5870 and 5850 are mounted vertically outside the case with the plugs facing the floor. Works nice and they run pretty cool overclocked.

Nice!  I'm interested to know if you can manage to get all 6 running from one mobo.  If you can close off the case (with slots for the PCIe wiring) and arrange the extra PSUs a bit better (so everything is blowing hot air in the same direction), you could pretty easily get all air flowing from front to rear and make a little home made setup to vent all the hot air away.  Did you do anything special such that all those cards aren't drawing power from the PCIe bus?

here are my two rigs, humming away in the spare room.

leftmost is a gigabyte (ultra-durable, they say) 5870. having some heat problems atm. 800/300, around 90C! (maybe I should get some case fans on it)
near that is a reference 5870 with a scythe setsugen cooler. running at 950/300, around 74C. 975 is doable but not stable.

there's room for at least one more card on the board and the psu, looking for a cheap card for it.


the right box is made out of cardboard (psu box) and this layout is one day old. we'll see if it holds up or catches fire
the cardboard itself is not touching any hot parts (except two ends of the 5970 to hold it up, i could isolate it with some cork) so it should be fine though.

Overheating issues on the 5870? Try putting a fan on top of it. This way it will blow cold air right on the cooling fans.
