I have a simple question.
I am NOT a GENIUS like MOST of the people here -- but I am able to track the progress of this theft -- and the IP's used.
Much larger amounts have been stolen and I have never heard of anyone being able to track anyone else down using blockchain analytics. They can split these amounts endlessly, when does it actually leave possession of the thief? No way to tell. They can send some to tumblers, then there is no tracking possible since the tumbler will send them entirely different BTC. They can send some to an exchange like BTC-e that allows you to essentially have an anonymous account. Maybe if the amount was large enough you could get some authority to insist that BTC-e divulge who deposited it but all they may have is an anonymous email address and IP address at a library or a coffee shop in some foreign country. Does BTC-e allow connections from TOR? If they do then I would expect the thief to use TOR. There is a withdrawal fee associated with that but if you traded BTC for any other cryptocurrency, transferred that to your own wallet, later transferred it to another exchange and then turned it back into BTC it would be impossible to follow that trail. I have seen people talk up the fact that BTC is not really anonymous because of the blockchain but in reality there are plenty of easy ways to obscure coins and who actually controls them. it will go into a mixer and by- by I have seen this one more then one time.

i know everyone says its technically impossible, but this is one of the reasons i am not 100% sure about vanity addresses.. can you make so many that eventually you will run into one already used? i know statistically it would take millions, but with newer cards, you can do millions of keys per second?
when you generate a bitcoin address its random.. but with a vanity one, you are mostly taking the randomness away by specifying the first few characters.. in theory it would make it easier to crack? specially if someone found a flaw with vanitygen and hasnt said anything about it.. it is old software that isnt being updated.

How easy is it for hackers to steal btc from your wallet? Can they steal even with all the verification security you have on the wallet? Makes me wonder if I should continue leaving my btc in my wallet for long periods of time. It feels like its a nightmare just waiting to happen.

Keep your Bitcoins in a wallet you have control over. NOT in an online wallet like blockchain!! And you should be fine. Unless you get some bad malware on the machine where you keep your wallet.

Really sucks. It's a lot for a teenager for me to lose. That money didn't come easy and took a lot of work all to be snatched within a second. Which doesn't make sense to me
I have a simple question. I am NOT a GENIUS like MOST of the people here -- but I am able to track the progress of this theft -- and the IP's used. Moe has already stated that he is a teenager -- I'm not sure what country he is from -- but, presumable, theft is theft. Can we as a group come together to help him? I'm thinking that we might be able to trace the "final" resting place for these coins -- and then either see where they are spent, or see where they are "cashed out into fiat". With KYC and everything -- we MIGHT be able to identify the low life that stole his coins -- and then let the prosecutors take over. Am I just WAY TOO OPTIMISTIC? Personally, everyone that I know uses the Trezor -- and we keep the seed words OFFLINE only -- so I HOPE that WE are safe -- but, like firetreeactual said, we probably aren't using BEST and SAFEST methods out there. 28 coins for me would be like a KNIFE IN THE HEART! And I own a successful business that makes WAY more than that -- it is the concept. And YES -- I also lost money on GOX -- AND a cloud mining scam -- AND, well I won't mention the last one... I'm just curious if anyone knows of a way to help him get his coins back... As a teenager, I'm CERTAIN that he is intelligent; but, may not have the life experience to understand the totality of resources available. No offense intended. Thanks traxor I couldn't have said it better myself. How you explained it is exactly how I feel it's a lot of money and too lose it just like that really sucks. Also I am from South Africa. Any additional information on these transaction can help me trace it down.

28 BTC currently resting in this wallet: 177zMwve8Eqt8DgwZR4USyPHzeyrfQwSDm
I'm keeping an eye on it -- but, I don't have a lot of spare time. Hopefully Moe knows how to do the basics.
Last IP address used for the latest transfer was out of France -- I posted about it earlier in the thread -- probably a VPN (79 spammers using the same IP)...
I'm pretty good with computer. Been keeping an eye on it and trying to get past all the proxys to find the source. Seems to stop in France but pinpointing a location will be hard. Going to keep at it.

My brain agrees with you -- my heart goes out to the young man...
I will no longer distract the thread -- albeit, he IS a miner here...
I just wish we could help in some meaningful way -- I just don't see how that is realistically possible...
How much was stolen? 28 BTC was stolen from me. Took long to save that up and have it taken in a second

How much was stolen? 28 BTC was stolen from me. Took long to save that up and have it taken in a second Really sorry to hear about your stolen coin. Hang in there, kid. That is indeed a lot of cash, but I guarantee that this experience will make you one of the smartest, safest, hack proof miners/bitcoiners out there and the skills you learn from this will pay you back in the future more than you lost. Of course, right now, it still totally sucks. If it's any consolation, I lost about $5k "investing" in a potential product (guy had a patent and all that) and that money just went down the drain. Dumbest thing I ever did. I'm a whole lot smarter now. I chalk it up to the cost of education. Best wishes, my friend.

Many thanks. HOSTING: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=622998.0My recommendation for price is Oregon Mines for here in the US at $95 total cost per miner (S7/S9) no contract. You can get better pricing with contract and quantity. Remember, everyone will talk in KWh. This means that an S7/S9 would be about 1.4KWh. So if you are offered $85 per KWh the calculated price would be: 1.4 x 85 = $127.50 per miner. Now also ask if a PSU is needed and if maintenance (restarting) is extra.
