1001  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proof of area, an idea that uses geological IP as consensus mechanism on: August 05, 2016, 10:29:05 PM
I don't like the idea of localization. BTC has been created without borders, to be international, so we should not try to modify this. I understand some kind of centralization is happening. With China's the world's largest country, it's only logic that there are more transactions and more mining in that country, but nobody said this shall last forever. In 20 years from now, there might be more people living in India, doing more transactions, and more mining than in China.

We see that in some big companies or universities where there is a positive discrimination system which calls for a given number of blacks (only an example) no matter how talented they may be. I can't imagine a system where the miner's reward would be automatically sent to miners in Egypt or Ethiopia, only because there are so few mining in that country, compared to China or the US.
1002  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Welsh mother jailed for filming porn with her 14-yo son & sending it to cousin on: August 04, 2016, 11:20:23 PM
The family is Pakistani...
Those things happen everyday out there, and nobody talks about it. It's most often the father having sex with his daughters, but sometimes, it's the other way around. We only talk about it because the acts happened in Wales.
1003  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Brexit impact on economy, house prices, markets and politics on: August 04, 2016, 11:13:50 PM
I'm getting tired of hearing about the brexit. Hey, that hasn't happened yet. Nothing has changed so far (well, except the ministers). That article 50 which is the first step of the process, it hasn't been used yet, and we don't even know if the thing is going to start this year.
1004  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The less you own, the more you have on: August 04, 2016, 11:08:49 PM
I haven't been without a job since I was 14. I doubt I would ever be without one. Even if I was retired I'd still work. So I don't know how I'd feel without one.

As for the wallet, that's the point. You don't have to worry so much about money without a lot of stuff. My monthly spending on essentials is about 10% of my income and I could easily drop that down to 4-5% if I had to.

Well, congratulations. I'm saving 20/30% of my monthly income these days. We have several things in common, though. I don't have much attachment to places nor material stuff. I've sold my house n 2012, and I've been living here and there since then, but I don't want a boat for the future (I love the sea, but I love it from the seaside). My goal is to have several houses in several different countries, and I'll be traveling between them.
1005  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When will be see bitcoin as international currency? on: August 04, 2016, 11:02:10 PM
BTC's an international currency now! International people use it, but it could be used much more if it was easier, much easier for travelers to exchange BTC with the local fiat currency.
1006  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Any Bitcoin companies based in HongKong are scamers! what you think? on: August 04, 2016, 10:58:32 PM
HK is one the world's greatest place to do business. I've done business in HK, and I hope to do it again next year. It's only a normal that a good place to do business also attract bad people. It's happening all the time.
1007  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The less you own, the more you have on: August 03, 2016, 10:29:57 PM
What a wonderful idea.  I all loved the comments here.  It is very practical.  By owning less we will become more happy.  We will be able to enjoy single thing that we have right now.  I wish I could be you someday.  Just enjoying the things which only matters to me.  Nowadays, people were so busy making a living but forget how to live.  They are tied to their bills, to their luxurious things, to their egos.  If only I could have a nice job maybe I can do that.  But for now I will work hard to do the same like you do today.  I will put it always in my mind, "the less I own, the more I have."

I get tempted to buy things all the time. There are billions of dollars spent to psychologically get us to buy stuff. I just go back every time and remember that it has to fit in my carry on or backpack. Then the temptation goes away because I remember that my life is a lot easier without all of those things.

Elwar, I think you own a lot. It doesn't matter that you don't own a lot of stuff. You have the confidence coming from having a good job with a regular income and (I assume) a pretty fat wallet. Would you so enthusiastic about owning few material things, if you had less immaterial things like your job and your wallet?
1008  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Kim Dotcom launching a Bitcoin project ? on: August 03, 2016, 10:21:48 PM
I'm not sure this is going to be good for BTC. It's already quite often associated with drugs, so we don't want it to related to copyright issues from pirated movies or the like. I'll wait and see.
1009  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Danger when buying/selling BTC in person on: August 03, 2016, 10:19:46 PM
That danger isn't related to BTC but to cash. I'm used to it as I've bought and sold many old cars using nothing but cash, and I'll keep on doing things this way, but you need to be cautious when handling a lot of cash. I guess the guy who was stolen wasn't cautious enough.
1010  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Erdogan calls for swift removal of Trump name from Istanbul Towers on: August 02, 2016, 11:50:22 PM
The more I hear about that ugly Erdogan, the more I like Trump. Because I'm afraid Hilary would be weak against the mad Turk. Trump certainly doesn't need to start a war. He already said NATO costs too much, so he could easily close the US Army bases in Turkey. Some local businesses would suffer, and Turkey would be left alone against its neighbors, most notably Russia.

It's Turkey who needs the US more than the US needs Turkey.
1011  Economy / Economics / Re: Florida Judge Rules Bitcoin is Not Money on: August 02, 2016, 11:42:26 PM
We've got to be very precise. The judge didn't say BTC wasn't money, but that it isn't the equivalent of money, and that AML regulations aren't applicable to this particular case.

The judge actually did say bitcoin wasn't money. If you read the decision, the judge wrote:

Quote
Secondly, the Defendant does not fall under the definition of "payment instrument seller" found in Section 560.103(29), Fla. Stat. because Bitcoin does not fall under the statutory definition of "payment instrument." The federal government, for example, has decided to treat virtual currency as property for federal tax purposes (See I.R.S Notice 2014-21...). "Virtual Currency" is not included in the statutory definition of a "payment instrument;" nor does Bitcoin fit into one of the defined categories listed.

i.e., Bitcoin is not money.

All right, I hadn't seen that. I guess we agree though, according to your previous post. I'm not giving much importance to that ruling. BTC doesn't fit into the legal description of a payment instrument, but there are more and more people who would gladly accept BTC as a payment.
1012  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How Bitcoin will smash Donald Trump's Mexican remittance wall on: August 02, 2016, 11:38:39 PM
Who needs BTC? Trump's plan won't work even without BTC. There are many businesses in the US trading with Mexican businesses, and then there are millions of Mexicans living in the US who carry a US passport. Remittances are only a very little part of the money flowing above the US/Mexican border, and you can't stop them without hurting everything.

Also, from a legal point of view, depriving an individual from the right to do what he wants with his money, will be difficult. Mexicans (hey, they're not all illegal) would easily find lawyers to protect their rights.
1013  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Can the internet reboot Africa? on: August 01, 2016, 10:37:57 PM
The place to start is Western Sahara. Those people are so low in poverty that they will do anything to get out of their hole.

Cool

There are much poorer places in Africa. The coast of Western Sahara is under Moroccan control, then there's a war zone. It's a road and you can't put a foot out of that road because there are mines. Also, there are terrorists out there.
1014  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Best Way To Encourage Offline Store To Accept BTC on: August 01, 2016, 10:34:02 PM
I have actually tried what you did in a somewhat-big-ish store here and after all the talks and all, the response I got was "I'll be looking into it" which of course, what I was definitely going to get and it's only been nearly a week since I did that.

I'm not optimistic but I really do hope they would. I'm guessing they are still either looking into it whether they would profit or not.

Interesting. For info, what kind of stuff is that store selling? I can't imagine getting a soda and paying with BTC, but I could probably consider it to buy some large appliance, or anything above €250.
1015  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Can the internet reboot Africa? on: July 31, 2016, 11:50:28 AM
Look at a typical African city:

No, sir. This isn't your typical African city. Far from it. Is this Lagos? That's only the bright side. There are some rich folks there, I know Honda has a factory which assembles Accords in Nigeria, but there are also millions of people who barely have anything but the clothes they're wearing. And the poor vastly outnumber the rich. Internet will help, but much more is needed to make Africans richer.
Its Dar-es-Salaam. What I meant to say is Africa is changing. There are more cities like this.

Never been to SE Africa, but there are also nice places like this in Lagos or Abidjan. But you never have to go far to find yourself on a dirt road where the houses don't have running water. Yes, Africa's changing. Fast.
1016  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Girl, 14, cuts her brother's girlfriend's throat and tells her 'Have a nice afte on: July 31, 2016, 11:47:03 AM
Is this caused by violent films on TV? Violent games? The Internet?
I've thought that many times, some things are wrong with the youth. I had no violent ideas like that when I was that age. I understand Syria and many countries are terrible places to grow up, but Wisconsin isn't one of them.
1017  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Problems you often face online in Bitcoin world? on: July 31, 2016, 11:41:36 AM
I don't think I've experienced a single problem with BTC. I've had an issue with the Armory software which I found pretty terrible, but I uninstalled it straight away and now everything's fine. I've never typed any private key or password, we can copy and paste, can't we?

I wish there could be more places to spend BTC, but that problem comes from retailers, not BTC.

1019  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Brexit: the beginning of the end? on: July 28, 2016, 11:32:29 PM
They have so many bases or similar military installations on Germany (56!) that this country can be considered as still under American "occupation" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Army_installations_in_Germany).

But if someone like Trump won the American presidency, the pax americana could be in risk (http://www.newsweek.com/trump-isolationism-alarm-nationalism-liberalism-allies-realism-445630; http://www.newsweek.com/trump-will-withdraw-nato-world-455272).

There are few US soldiers left in Germany. I'd say there's only one tenth of what there were a generation ago. Regarding Trump, he surprised everybody by saying that because that would just destroy NATO. NATO is meaningless if it's only between countries on the same side of the Atlantic. I doubt he would do that, because that would Russia too happy.

It's seems now that the European Union won't have political will or conditions to develop into a Federal Union.

The European Union might not be as important to peace as some people thinks, at least with the current structure. But if it could be converted into a federal state, the issues of State debt would be overcome and it would be a serious guarantee of peace.

But it seems the opportunity was lost on 2005 and there won't be another one.[/b]

Nobody, or very few people support the idea of a federal Europe. Some people here see Europe as socialist, but most Europeans see it as capitalist, putting in place free market policies which destroy jobs by closing factories with inefficient workers or management.
1020  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Can the internet reboot Africa? on: July 28, 2016, 11:16:54 PM
There are theories and then, there are facts.
African culture is losing ground fast all over the continent, and part of that change take its roots on the web.

In most markets in Africa nowadays, you see products to whiten the skin, or hair products, so that black women can have their hair look like a white woman, or Obama's wife. African women watch Sex and the city on TV, and they've changed their behavior. In many African countries, there used to be nothing wrong between a 40-year old man and a 12-year old girl, but nowadays white man's culture, which the Internet brings, say it's bad.

In Kenya, there are muslim preachers who say Internet's evil, like everything which comes from white men, but the young adapt to the foreign ideas brought by the Internet, and they dump their traditional culture.
