1021  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain without bitcoin. Can it work? on: July 30, 2015, 05:22:02 PM
Non bitcoins coins have blockchains and not all are PoW, so why would you need BTC?

The block chain is just newer ledger technology, there is no reason for banks to be unable to incorporate concepts based on bitcoin.

Yes, but what they would have would be a an intranet ledger for their own use. And if it has no token of worth attached to it then it's simply the same as programming whatever you like into an intranet ledger. That's not really a blockchain. That's just a cheaper banking system (for them.)

Huh, the banks would use it for the Dollar as an internal ledger, yes. Using block chain technology. They could develop that into many things. If your definition of blockchain is "not a blockchain if there's no cryptocoin attached" sure, but that's not what the blockchain is.

You don't need bitcoin to generate blocks of transactions and have internal nodes accept/reject.

A centralized blockchain is nonsense, it doesn't do all the cool features that a worldwide decentralized blockchain does. A centralized blockchain is an huge target for hackers and will never be even 1% as safe as a worldwide decentralized blockchain, specially the Bitcoin one which is backed by the most computing power ever seen.
1022  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: thinking about making a bitcoin altcoin exchange site, is that legal? on: July 30, 2015, 05:19:04 PM
you can have your private server running the exchange on liberland, so no one will mess with you, no government can do anything about it

you should be pretty safe then even with fiat money

But how solid seems Liberland? I don't know, that thing still seems a bit dodgy to me. If anything, I would open my exchange in Swizertland which is a classic for people trying to bypass capital controls.
I don't think no one cares about crypto to crypto transactions (well in fact its getting regulated even at this level) but outside US it should be ok. Focus on the fiat transactions research.
1023  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Safety awareness of bitcoin users on: July 30, 2015, 05:16:37 PM
but the any link from newbie account can be suspicious and you can get hacked by this trick so i will advice everyone stay away from these kind of links where some kind of risk involve in it.

Exactly, and that's where my safety awareness starts. I do not open URLS from strangers, especially not here in this forum. Some people have tried to scam me by sending me strange URLs or even trying to let me download some files which should contain "only printscreens" in their opinion; they wanted me (a stranger to them) to help them fix their problems with their Bitcoin wallet.. And in order to do that, I should download some files. Right.

Common sense is already a great tool for your security awareness. I'm sorry if you really need respondents for your thesis (i've been there myself too), but I'm not going to help you with that. Especially not if you use such weird URLs.

I don't think nothing wrong can happen if you disable javascript and plugins when opening a link. It's still common sense to be wary of any link posted by a newbie. In fact the forum should warm users when a newbie posts a link. This one seems like a legit link tho.
1024  Economy / Speculation / Re: 21 millions bitcoiners on: July 30, 2015, 05:09:49 PM
I think there are a few legitimate coins that serve a purpose and deserve a big marketcap.
XMR for the extra anonymity for the lack of a better solution for the anonymity problem with Bitcoin right now.
Storj for the decentralized storage features.
Maidsafe for the decentralized internet (really ambitious project).
Ethereum is maybe way too ambitious actually, and may fail because of that, but I guess is worth looking at as well.
1025  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Living only using BitCoins and cryptocurrencies. I need help! on: July 30, 2015, 05:07:50 PM
Elwar, so how would you go about trying to find a guy that will buy BTC from you in real life in exchange for cash to bypass all the credentials bullshit, while also bypassing localbitcoins? Ideally you should bypass localbitcoins as well (a lot of times they ask for credentials), but I guess its hard to find people this way.
If you lived in any of the major US or EUR cities, how would you go about this?
1026  Other / Off-topic / Re: Will you quit your day job to go full time on bitcoin? on: July 29, 2015, 05:43:05 PM
no, never because it will be possible to receive the payment for your job in bitcoins in the future i believe, also i would never quit job and go work somewhere i dont know if i will receive money all the time

Well, something is clear. With the state of the current economy, having a job doesn't mean a guaranteed wage. You see the percentages of temporal jobs being bigger and bigger vs permanent employment, so that's something to consider. In some countries the big majority of jobs are temporal contracts only which means you may end up fired at any given point in time.
1027  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Why Bitcoin Core doesn't tell you to encrypt your wallet by default? on: July 29, 2015, 05:40:36 PM
I was wondering.. why Bitcoin Core doesn't prompt you with a windows to enter a passphrase the first time you boot it? I don't like the idea of a wallet that can be open for anyone to enter and modify. As a newbie they may not realize they have to put a password on it.
Of course the possibility of the password you entered being forgotten is also tragic.
How to solve this? maybe having people to enter the password 10 times, or print it or something. I don't know, im just not sure about a non-encrypted wallet by default.
1028  Economy / Economics / Re: Why have Bitcoin instead of cash? on: July 29, 2015, 05:36:46 PM

8) Bitcoins can be password protected. When someone steals your wallet with cash, it's gone. When someone steals your wallet with bitcoins, they can see how much is in there, but they can't spend a dime.

are you talking about bip38?

BIP38 gives you the ability to add a password in your paperwallets, but every software wallet out there gives you the posibility to encrypt it with a password. Bitcoin Core is not encrypted by default by some reason (it should ask you to put a prompt when you fire it for the first time).
1029  Economy / Economics / Re: The Real Story of Gold on: July 29, 2015, 05:34:15 PM
Gold HAD his time. Now it's over, along with the fiat scam. Sure, Gold back them made sense, but right now Bitcoin deprecates it on every single aspect you can ask for. And no, there's no inherit value to Gold or any money. Money is is money if people will value it, period. The rest are the characteristics of said money, and nothing, nothing ever has been as good as Bitcoin at being money. Bitcoin takes the best of both worlds from gold and credit and twists it into a new paradigm of unknown unknowns. The possibilities are endless.

Greece Minister Yanis Varaufakis Admits Experimenting with Parallel Payment System

Former Greece Finance Minister Yanis Varaufakis has confirmed to have been involved in the development of a parallel payment system in the wake of the nation’s debt crisis.

Read full article: http://www.newsbtc.com/2015/07/29/greece-minister-yanis-varaufakis-admits-experimenting-with-parallel-payment-system/

He's clearly aware on BTC, he has been in a couple documentaries about it and has as well writen about it in his blog, he even had a shared podcast with Andreas Antonopoulous. Now, is he talking about Bitcoin? I hope so, because anything else that isn't Bitcoin for serious monetary uses is a complete joke.
I doubt it's Bitcoin. He has been very skeptic about it and doesn't like the idea of an uncontrolled money so to speak as admited by him in his own blog. He made an article called "the dangers of an state-less money" or something like that, so I doubt it's Bitcoin. I wish he changed his time in the last year or so and he's full pro-Bitcoin now.
1031  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin and Porn on: July 29, 2015, 05:25:25 PM
Porn industry can be very good niche and business opportunity for bitcoin.
At least, anonymity is the strongest point in bitcoin, and it's safe to use bitcoin as payment tool.
Of course, there is also a lot SCAM in porn industry and also it's very fine line between
the legality and illegality there.
We have to be aware about this and not to jeopardize bitcoin and brought it under government investigation.

There's not a lot of porn worth paying out nowadays imo. It's just so easy to find for free that you don't really feel inclined to do so. There's some golden material to be found in a website called clips4sale tho, I wish that site had Bitcoin payments, lots of nice videos by non famous producers to be had over there.
1032  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Darkwallet vs. Bitmixer.io ? on: July 29, 2015, 05:23:14 PM
If I'm not mistaken, Darkwallet uses stealth addresses, something that can be used depending on the blockchain only, thus being decentralized. Bitmixer is just a mixing service. AFAIK Darkwallet does not do mixing itself, so they're different things for different purposes.

Speaking about those Stealth adresses , I was searching on their Github page then got linked to their Wiki page . I read about Stealth things but I didn't get a word how does those things works if you could make it simplier to me

I think they are addresses that don't show up on the blockchain with details, only the 2 parties involved know the details. Not sure tho. The guy developing Darkwallet named Amir used to post here I think but disappeared for months and the project has been frozen.
1033  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mike Tyson bitcoin ATM on twitter on: July 29, 2015, 05:21:34 PM
awesome, Mike Tyson will be the rep of bitcoin ATM? Or is it his own brand?

They're not his. They belong to someone else he's just the publicity figure.

Uh, is this even a legit Mike Tyson undertaking, or is someone just appropriating his image as a marketing gimmick?

I think this is exactly what it is. Tyson will do pretty much anything for money these days and makes a living just from doin personal appearances and signings etc so I'm sure he just leased his name to these machines. Personally I don't care as any news is good publicity for bitcoin and gets us into the mainstream media again.

I would like to see the current Mike Tyson's networth. He has been working a lot lately and has a huge movie coming with Jamie Foxx as the main character which is going to be a guaranteed hit delivering tons of profit.
1034  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Safety awareness of bitcoin users on: July 29, 2015, 05:16:58 PM

7 years. exactly.
It hasn't been 7 years yet.

Since January 2009; 6 and half years only Smiley

I think there were some super early pre alpha builds that dated back to mid to late 2008, maybe only shared around in small circles. Someone else would need to confirm this tho.
1035  Economy / Speculation / Re: How will Ethereum's launch affect BTC's price? on: July 28, 2015, 06:32:36 PM
In my opinion, Ethereum will by it's own weight. It's too pretentious and ambitious of a project. Bitcoin's simplicity will win in the end, and it's scalability will deprecate Ethereum and other competitors.
1036  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Does BTCJam recover your loses in any way? on: July 28, 2015, 06:29:14 PM

What is Arbitration?

If a borrower does not make payments as required by the terms of the loan, a Notice of Default will be sent to the borrower. Simultaneously, the investors will receive a letter to encourage finding a solution. If the Default remains uncured for 90 calendar days, the entire loan will be sent to our arbitration partner, net-ARB.com. Net-ARB is an independent firm, having no ties to BTCjam.com or any of its officers.

Our arbitration partner, net-ARB, will review the loan terms, certify default and issue an Award in favor of the investor(s) for the full amount still owed. The Arbitration Award is binding and cannot be appealed. This Award may be used to procure a judgment against the borrower in a court of law. (Net-ARB will provide the investor(s) with all other information necessary to pursue a judgment).

Seems like it's more of a hassle to the lender if ever the borrower defaults his/her loan. Not a good approach to such cases imo, if the borrower is from another country, you can't do anything about it, literally.

I just started with BTCJam and I've made four loans but only to people that have a history of previous loans.  One guy made a payment 3 weeks early which was a surprise.

I would suggest making about 10 small loans to lower your risk.

Also, re-invest your interest payments to further lower your risk.

Even the A+ verified borrower fucks up sometimes, though the cases are very rare. Reviewing the profile of the borrower thoroughly and checking his/her history would give you an idea whether to give that user a loan or not. I beg to disagree but if you are a newbie on such things, trying to give a loan of a small amount and limiting your loan to a single transaction would do to familiarize yourself on the system. If you think you can handle it, then next time you can try and be bold: lend different amounts to different verified and 'trusted' users simultaneously. Just an advice though.

So what stops people from creating new profiles using their friends credentials, and their friend of friends credentials... and so on and asking for money with A+ verified profiles and defaulting every single time to people that live overseas? free BTC anyone? what a joke.

So is there a decent way to put your Bitcoins to use? im bored of simply sitting on mine, I want to make more.
1037  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: "error: a fatal internal error occurred. see debug.log for details" on: July 28, 2015, 06:24:38 PM
You need to reindex the database. That will take some time but it WON"T download the entire blockchain again. As long as you don't delete the .blk files.

I wonder how long does it take to reindex the database? I had the same problem or similar, i've used the -reindex cvar and it has been like 5 hours and the bar is not even halfway through. Jesus Christ this is annoying. I expected it would be faster but it's not. It says "reindexing blocks on disk" and still 1 year and 6 weeks behind.
1038  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: extinguishing Western union on: July 28, 2015, 05:13:39 PM
How do you think Bitcoin could prevent crimes by remittance? How could you prove the origin of the funds?

Nowhere in the definition of money does it include the ability to prevent crimes.

That is what police are for. Maybe focus on updating the ancient police system? Bitcoin is taking care of updating the ancient money system.

Very true, in fact, the Bitcoin system is better for law enforcement than straight up cash since everything is recorded on the public ledger, while cash is total obfuscation as long as you don't move it through banking system. If Amir keeps working on DarkWallet tho.. they'll have problems.
1039  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: CNBC anchors are so oblivious to Bitcoin....LOL on: July 28, 2015, 05:11:32 PM
This morning, CNBC reported the Mike Tyson Bitcoin ATMs and the anchors mocked it and said how is Bitcoin still relevant when it's just a scam and ponzi scheme.  They said this Mike Tyson deal was obviously a scam to get more people to waste money in Bitcoin.

They kept referring to "bitcoin" as if it was one entity and why would "they" invest in Mike Tyson as a spokesperson.

It was so laughable.

And these anchors are suppose to help us with investment decisions?   Huh

Do you think those clueless idiots have any idea on technology? The people that get hired to read cue only have one talent: Reading cue and usually looking good and being "charismatic". Those guys are parrots of the status quo and have no idea about anything that requires actual brain mass.
1040  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could Bitcoin Crash Gold? on: July 28, 2015, 04:56:41 PM
The strong point of bitcoin is not the being currency but being technology. So the success of bitcoin will be more the technology behing it than the use of it like a currency. In this point of view has nothing to do with the gold. Gold is another thing. It serve as a world reserve while bitcoin as a technology which will disrupt to many other technologies.

That's correct. The technology behind bitcoin will change most of the technologies actually in use becoming those obsolete and unusable because of not being competitive anymore. Bitcoin as a currency will profit from this and will emerge as a currency. But to tell that will crash gold seems something futuristic for me.

True but never underestimate the power of gold. Gold is something that's everywhere and iconic for wealth in almost every culture in the world. Its network effect is probably the greatest of all time, even if Bitcoin is superior in basically every single feature.
