1081  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is there a best way of withdrawing profits from exchanges? on: July 28, 2023, 06:15:00 PM
Quote
Is there a best way of withdrawing profits from exchanges?

There is no such thing as "profit on an exchange", since you are not the owner of the money. While someone else (in this case the exchange) is in the possession of your private keys, you are not the owner of the money. As a consequence, you are also not the owner of any profits. My advice is to move the funds from any centralized exchange as fast as you can no matter how you do it. As long as you keep funds in someone else's pocket, that person (or company) may always cut your access to the pocket.

I don't plan on withdrawing any profits for a long time at least until 2024 but just wondering if there is a best/ cheapest way of doing so when the time comes?

Perhaps what I wrote above will make you reconsider this.

2024/25 will be my first bull run and up till now all I have been doing is buying have yet to sell anything for cash.

How do you know for sure there will be a bull run in 2024-2025? Do you have the power of seeing the future? Have you traveled in time and you already know it will happen? You seem very certain about this.

Is there a best/cheapest way of withdrawing profits to bank?

And next thing you say is another ridiculous idea: to associate crypto incomes with banks. Such movement would only expose you even more in front of the government. You already exposed yourself by offering for free to a centralized exchange, one of the most important thing from your life: your personal information. And, since you gave already your personal information to an exchange, that in formation is, obviously, not personal anymore. If it were personal only you would know it. Now third parties know it as well.

And you are also trying to jump from the frying pan into the fire. Meaning to become a complete sitting duck in front of the government, abandoning any last idea about anonymity and privacy, and associating your crypto exchanges with a bank. That would be a really bad idea.

Perhaps reading this thread will help you understand better how to use Bitcoin: 12 years later and people still don't know to use Bitcoin nor what it's good for. And, if you read that topic, perhaps you can also read Why KYC is extremely dangerous – and useless.

Be careful about what you'll do, OP... Your funds and privacy are at high risks right now...
1082  Other / Meta / Re: Interesting watchlist behavior or bug?! on: July 28, 2023, 05:48:01 PM
I, personally, have a different way of checking the forum topics which interest me. Instead of "Watchlist" I am using the button "Show new replies to your posts". As the name of the button says, when I click on it I see a list of topics where I posted before and where new posts were made by others. This way I am sure I am not missing anything from those threads. Some may call it old fashion, but I got used with getting updated in this way.

In rest, I have a bunch of boards which I'm usually checking, although I may not make any post there. But I have this list of board in my head everyday so I'm checking them naturally, not by consulting a file and see which boards I checked already and which I have to still check. For example, I am going through Bitcoin Discussion, Romanian board, Meta, Beginners & Help, Reputation, Scam Accusation, Collectibles etc. So although I'm not always posting there there are my favorite boards and I'm always checking the activity on them.

And, in rest, the button "Show new replies to your posts" helps me to see all the topics where I wrote before and which have new activity.

It was my idea. The concept was that each participant in the campaign will have an individual avatar, by which users will recognize him over time. [...]

there will be about 30-40 different avatars (so there will be plenty to choose from). I want to add that there will be a lot of characters whose face is hidden.

Oh this is put things in another light... I think I understand what you mean and the idea is good. But only by seeing the earlier post nobody could understand the idea behind the suggested avatars. In any case, I think this will look appealing to forum users, since each one wearing such avatar could be differentiated by the other.

Obviously, oh idea of having masked guys and I think that most will be attracted by these faces. So maybe it would be a good idea to have more masked faces, with different styles / masks. Perhaps the avatars will be given on the principle of "first come - first served"?
1084  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: I'm making a 50$ contest on: July 28, 2023, 06:02:50 AM
As far as I see the deadline of the contest is passed for more than 2 days and OP did not show up anymore. I am going to wait until end of weekend then I'll give him a negative feedback for this scam, in case he will still not show up and pay the prize to the winner.

Edit: the weekend also passed and OP did not show up anymore, thus I consider the negative feedback to be legitimate in his case. I just added the feedback to his Trust page.
1085  Local / Română (Romanian) / Re: Recomandare portofel dupa hackul Atomic Wallet on: July 27, 2023, 04:28:43 PM

1088  Other / Meta / Re: Merit source and top merit earners on: July 25, 2023, 07:04:50 PM
many of us never applied and just logged in one day and were informed we were now merit sources.

I am also more than certain that, even in such cases (which I also heard of), theymos made a thorough analysis for each such user. I have no doubts that theymos would choose a merit source based on nothing. So, most likely, each such user had a good history of meriting posts from various boards, spotting quality posts and good forum contributors. theymos is a rational person, as far as I observed, and does nothing on a rush or not by analyzing thoroughly his decision and potentially outcomes.

So I believe that those selected to be merit sources without a formal application also fully deserve their position.
1089  Other / Meta / Re: Merit source and top merit earners on: July 25, 2023, 06:48:40 PM
I would have appreciated if OP didn't hide behind a brand-new account and had the courage to post from his main account. That way it would be easier to see what is going on, and what could be the reason behind the creation of this thread. All we can do now is guess, but no one really cares, and the thread will soon be forgotten and added to the countless other baseless accusation threads.

I would be okay even if the OP would be active inside his own thread. So far, it seems that he only started the topic to create some drama and abandoned it. I also don't like those hiding behind alternative accounts but, since this is allowed, there is nothing that can be done here. However, if you have some guts, you should come up, at least, to support your ideas, bring some arguments to the discussion, try to prove your statements -- or anything similar. There is no point in making an accusation, throw some bad words and disappear. Even the effort for doing this (I mean the effort needed to create that new account) is useless.

Furthermore, as far as I see, absolutely nobody supported OP's ideas. What does this mean for him? That all which wrote here are hand in hand with merit sources?

In any case, let's wait a bit more. Perhaps OP will decide to come here and be present inside his own thread.
1090  Other / Archival / Re: 🌀 [banned mixer] - CoinJoin Mixer | Your Anonymity Is Our Priority! on: July 25, 2023, 06:41:16 PM
The fourth article analyzes the political side of Bitcoin, which according to the author is not the same as ideological, and on this point I do not entirely agree. For the author, although traditionally the defense of private money had been made from individualist ideology, Bitcoin is used by people of various ideologies, including radical leftists, and therefore makes the distinction.
I see it more a choice of words from author's side. I like the way it was written

Ideas also vary among people and some may agree, some may disagree. Let's not forget though that the author of the book is not a tech-savvy, but a voluntaryist and an individual feminist, which tries to approach Bitcoin from political and ideological points of view. This book is not for tech experts, but for those interested about history or governments' approaches from the past regarding private money, freedom and cryptography and it's meant to help people understand better the need for Bitcoin and how it can improve our lives. It's no coincidence that the author makes so many references to Austrian economists, such as Hayek or Murray Rothbard. These people debated about the need of private money decades before Cypherpunks were born.

Anyway, the article emphasizes that it is a tool that put in our hands can change the destiny of humanity as the printing press did. The end of the article gets a little dense, especially for those who have no previous knowledge of economic or monetary policy, but after analyzing the failure of some private money issuance with a wrong ideological basis, in my case the end leaves me waiting for the delivery of the next chapter.

The analogy with the printing press was a very powerful one. It shows what a game changer can do to our world, for the benefit of the many... I am more than certain that, if you read until here, the book attracted you and you will read also the remaining parts!
1091  Other / Meta / Re: How Can We Identify Someone Who Uses AI? on: July 25, 2023, 06:27:23 PM
[...] But ultimately what matters is whether or not the post is useless spam, which is what a lot of AI-assisted posts come across as. I can personally tell if someone is using AI within the first few lines of a post, and then my eyes kind of just gloss over the rest. Don't know about you guys but I simply don't care to read the rest of a post knowing its machine-generated.

nutildah's post is one of the most coherent ones from this topic and I also consider his topic very useful. Perhaps not many have his skill, to detect a post written by AI simply by reading it, so this must be a special perk Smiley

At same time, the highlighted part is the one most frustrating and deceptive. I would certainly not like at all to read some posts, to consider them valuable and, in the end, to find out that the author used an AI to generate them. Regarding the mention of plagiarism -- this is a sort of plagiarism indeed... After all, the author plagiarized an AI (lol?) since he did not write the post by himself... It's like if we were on SF forum and someone would come up with quotes from Jules Verne or Isaac Asimov and he would receive tons of merit. But those merits were supposed to be for the real authors of his lines -- Jules Verne and Asimov. Yet people which did not read those authors or which did not recognize the lines as belonging to them would merit a simple user which would try to take credit on someone else's work.

Now this leads to an interesting debate: can copy-pasting from an AI be considered plagiarism, if the source is not mentioned? Does the AI have the same rights as a human, in order to be considered to be prejudiced by a plagiarist? (This also reminds me of Asimov's novelette The Bicentennial Man (there was made also a film adaptation), the subject being a robot which struggled to be considered human. In the end, he could prove he is a human being only after he made some changes to his body in order to be able to die.)
1092  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help me translate my best posts in your Local Board on: July 25, 2023, 05:45:07 PM
It's really good that you have taken the initiative to translate the original posts into your local language but you should first make a open statement here and announce which threads you are going to translate because it would avoid double works as we have seen in the past.

Okay thanks for the heads up. I guess that's why @fillippone hasn't replied to my translation. I'm sorry for that, but next time I'm working on a translation, I will do well to ask first from the op. I do hope that fillippone do consider my apologies and add my translation to his thread. Thanks once again.

I don't think that is the problem in your case... It's just fillippone is very busy lately, from what I know. I also contacted him a few times and he told me he is very, very busy. So no, this is not "a lesson he's giving you". It's just bad timing (or so I believe).

However, regarding the approach of a translation, Hatchy is correct: it is totally decent and it has a lot of common sense to announce first. Maybe someone else did not announce through a post here that he is doing same translation -- maybe this user announced fillippone through a PM and he received fillippone's approval. In such case, your work would be in vain and frustration would also occur. Besides, I would also recommend to all translators to present the author a preview of their work before publishing it. Maybe the author has some comments or maybe he wants something changed. Maybe he spots some errors. In such cases, all these can be solved nicely and professionally, before the translation is published. Having it published then edited for correcting mistakes does not look good for the translator. And, using ninjastic.space all edits of a post can be seen. So I, from my perspective, would take this approach and this is also what I require to the users interested in translating my topics.

1095  Other / Meta / Re: Merit source and top merit earners on: July 25, 2023, 06:59:10 AM
Merit sources are focusing with those accounts or even those top merit rankers in the forum. Merit distribution isn't really that fair and I'm assuming that they are building their own sockpuppets to solo out and milk out signature campaigns that requires accounts that have lots of merit counts.

Merit sources are chosen after an application where they have to meet some criteria.

1. Be a somewhat established member.
2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

The application is not a formality and I know plenty of good forum contributors which applied for this position without receiving it. So those which are merit sources have to do a really good job in order to be elected.

Furthermore, merit spending is not moderated. Each user may send his merits to whoever he wants and in whatever amount he wants (being limited by the 50 merits / month to a unique user limit and by the limit of the amount of his sMerits). So far I only witnessed one case where a merit source was accused of abusing his powers and that user was demoted from merit source position. So actions are taken in case of abuses.

OP, if you can point the finger to someone directly, do it so and bring proof for your statement.

Other than that, since it was only one case of a merit source demoted for abusing his power, I am certain that merit sources are doing their job just fine. (There were other cases of demoted merit sources, but not for abuses. This happened when the user became inactive or did not use the sMerits received for being a merit source.)
1096  Other / Meta / Re: Icopress ' Merit Source Application on: July 24, 2023, 12:30:34 PM
I totally support icopress' application for becoming a merit source. He is a very good forum contributor, known for organizing BitcoinTalk Community Awards contest since 2020. At same time, he is also one of the oldest campaign managers of the forum and he manages these campaigns with a strong hand. So far I did not hear about any complaints about him regarding his managerial skills, therefore he must be doing a great job.

And, since being a campaign manager means also to know and follow forum rules very well; and also to properly seek and appreciate quality posts -- these are a very strong point for him for being accepted as merit source. Other than that, as he already mentioned in OP, he already sent 2500 merits to other users. Furthermore, according to bpip, he is the 34th most merited user (and, at same time, he is on 26th place on the ladder of users with most earned merits) and 68th most trusted. Such stats should tell a lot about very very good contributions, taking also into consideration that he reached such stats out of more than 3.5M users of the forum!

Good luck, padawan! May your application be accepted!

fruktik please be aware that multiple posts in a row are not allowed. According to Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules,

32. Posting multiple posts in a row (excluding bumps and reserved posts by the thread starter) is not allowed.

As a consequence, your second post in a row will be either deleted or merged by the moderator with the earlier one. It depends from mod to mod -- some delete them and some merge such posts. In any case, you should pay attention to this rule in the future and, at same time, since I already gave you that topic for reference, maybe you should read the entire set of rules. I hope this helps.
1098  Other / Meta / Re: How Can We Identify Someone Who Uses AI? on: July 24, 2023, 10:05:51 AM
I have mixed feelings about the possibility of detecting correctly AI generated text in all cases. I know 2 forum users which were incorrectly accused of using AI for their posts (one case is the one from here). While a (one) website was detecting AI generated posts in their cases, 3 other websites were saying that their posts were written by a human.

AI generated posts are, indeed, a problem, since many can use it for reaching their campaign quotas and also for obtaining not deserved merits. So some action against such cases is more than welcome, such as nutildah did. Besides, some campaign managers are also actively looking for AI generated posts.

However, since this madness technology is somehow recent, the tools for properly detecting it are not flawless and they may lead to false accusations. At same time, a broken tool is better than no tool at all so, at least, there is a way for combating this new way of cheating the system. Therefore, since the tools used are not flawless, I believe that best approach is to treat these accusations case by case, try each time using more websites for detecting the AI and not just one, allow the users to defend themselves and to present proof in their favor and so on.

What I'm trying to say is that, since this technology is here and there is nothing that can be done about that, let's not always jump to conclusions and let's make a thorough analysis for each accusation.
1099  Other / Meta / Re: Is it okay to create an off-topic discussion thread? on: July 24, 2023, 09:53:26 AM
I noticed that many suggested OP to post in Off-topic board. But, however, this is not what OP asked. Let's reread his question:

what if I create a discussion thread where the rules in the discussion thread allow off-topic discussion. Is that okay?

I needed to reread this for a few times until I came out with some logical answer. Practically, OP does not want to make a topic suitable for Off-topic board. In Off-topic board you can discuss

Off-topic - "Other topics that might be of interest to bitcoiners"

But this is not what OP wants.

Instead, OP wants to create a topic where to instate a rule allowing off-topic posts. And, after consulting forum rules again, this is forbidden:

2. No off-topic posts.

So even if the topic is created by you, OP; even if you set your own rule allowing off-topic posts -- your rule can not overrule forum rules (be it a unofficial set of rules). So the answer is no, you can not create such thread.

Topics which belongs to Off-topic boards can be moved to that board through user reports too.
Whenever I visit the board, I end up reporting some "insubstantial topics", which then get deleted. There's rarely anything interesting for Bitcoiners.

Oh, you don't think that such topics are interesting?
