LOL, yeah sure, $8M is not enough...
Is your name Ian Grice or Ian Greed?

Ian tries to get rid of that ol' pirate-passthrough story.
Don't expect any reaction whatsoever, no matter where and how you contact him regarding bitcoinmax.

And this is why BTC makes a lousy currency. I purchased something a month ago that right now I could have bought 2.  So sad.

What are you talking about. You exchanged it for a good when you felt it was appropriate. Sounds like good currency to me.

What I am saying is that a doubling in 30 days is ridiculous and unsustainable.

EDIT: Go Go Cyprus!!!

..if Bitcoin was a stock.. yes, I agree. Or any other conventional thing.

1344  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin clock on: March 19, 2013, 02:01:08 PM
update! the clock has just had a little makeover.

Nice work.  May I send a tip?

I must admit I've never liked the second hand.  Each cycle of the hour and minute hands mark a Bitcoin event but a cycle of the second hand only represents an approximation to 24 hours.

I would have a cycle of the second hand represent the addition of a single block.  Of course, the classic notion of angle symbolising "progress" toward an event would have to be weakened.  I submit the most natural mechanic would be to measure time since the last block, with 10 minutes represented by a half turn, 20 mins by 3/4, 40 mins by 7/8, et cetera.  The second hand could then move smoothly.  Another consequence is that the position of the second hand at a random time would be uniform, just as with a normal clock.  Bonus points for having a more accurate expected block frequency than 10 minutes.

I'm certain the idea of cycles of the second hand representing block creations has been raised before.  I can't think of a more elegant way of graphically representing the exotic nature of block-chain activity in a clock than with a smooth and gradually slowing second hand.

Haha I like that idea! ..a gradually slower and slower hand, which will never quite reach "12" by itself, but only when finding a block!
I agree, no better way to show the "odds and variance" thingie of our blocks! :-)

But surely a heck of more complicated to program.

1345  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: 1BTC Bounty: mass-produced programmable USB stick w/ [O]LED display+button on: March 18, 2013, 11:20:02 AM
I posted some ideas over in the ellet thread. Maybe this could help you? You can't beat the price on these I guess :-)

I think it was suggested before, somewhere.
It seems like hardware is the main moneyburner here.

Why invent it again?
Use some small device with a bit cpu power, a good enough display, battery, usb connection and buttons.
Sounds familiar?
--> MP3 Player <--

Now I didn't research into this much. However, I found http://www.rockbox.org/ which replaces the stock firmware on a lot of mp3 players. We may use it directly, or parts of it, or just use it as a pointer to see which mp3 players are usable.

How about "sandisk clip":

Or "SanDisk Sansa c200":

edit:
even much more simple and surely cheaper, not based on rockbox:
http://www.s1mp3.org/en/docs_userguide.php

I would prefer one of the first two players..

I would use one of those. And buy a reprogrammed one, or maybe do it myself and send money in the direction of the firmware programmers.

Now these are strictly offline. No Paypal possible on these, as someone shouted on the original vapor-Ellet.. But good enough to sign transactions, for sure!

So, why are people burning truckloads of money on re-inventing the hardware? It's all in the software anyway!

Several good suggestions. I like "strength in numbers", it sounds cool in Latin "Fortitudo in numeris".

..isn't it "vires in numeris"? At least that's what my Casascius coins say ;-)
I like that slogan, by the way! Maybe not that mass-compatible, but neat!

I saw first-hand how well "Banking without Banks" works.
That's my vote.
Include it back into the vote already! :-)

Ente

dude, it only got one vote. yours I assume Smiley

Also "Be Your Own Bank" says pretty much the same but in a cooler and more positive way.

"Digital Gold" is the best slogan anyway, all the other votes were bought I am sure!

..as I didn't suggest that slogan, it has at least two. I guess it's up to you to keep track of that?

Thank you for deciding on the best slogan by yourself.
Mind to explain this poll, anyway?
:-P

edit:
Also, I don't understand why there are a) highly-visible poll-entries, b) less visible entries in the OP, and c) "lurk moar in this thread". If this isn't an obvious method of steering the outcome of this "poll" I don't know what.
You got it all wrong.

It went like this:

Phase 1: Nominations only
Phase 2: Poll started, still open to nominations
Phase 3: Late nominations need +1 from someone else
Phase 4: 0 vote suggestions removed
Phase 5: 1 & 2 vote suggestions removed
Phase 6: 3, 4 & 5 vote suggestions removed

The idea behind all this? As this poll system is quite simple and does not allow a ranked vote I had to enforce some aggregation. I did this by removing suggestions that clearly would not win so that voters were urged to recast their vote.

If I could assure secure voting I would bet a couple of BTC that your suggestion would not win especially as there is a very well received similar alternative. Still I think adding it now would only make things more complicated.

(will edit op with the sophisticated procedure model above Cheesy)

Thanks for explaining calmly and professionally, much appreciated in this forum! ;-)
Right, I see, I simply read around here "too late" and got a funny impression.

Cheers,

1348  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: March 14, 2013, 07:58:43 PM
If I can set, for example, a 0.1% fee for clearing my contact's transactions, and set x% per y days for lending, aka buying IOUs, I have an incentive for both clearing and buying IOUs.
You can set a fee for the transfer of your IOUs from one person to another. You can set a premium when you take someone else's IOUs. Charging interest breaks this model though, so we can't support it inside the normal flow of payments. You can, however, achieve the same thing with an issue premium (or a "quality in" in Ripple terms).

See this thread for details on why interest doesn't work:
https://ripple.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1224

The simple reason interest breaks this model: It makes it impossible to compare the value of payment paths. For example, say you get $10 at a gateway but in exchange you lose a $9 debt at 12% interest. Is that a good deal? Well, you can't say unless you know how long that debt would have continued to pay interest.

If you do know how long the debt will pay interest, there's no need for interest at all if you can charge an issue premium. There's a one-to-one correspondence between "$X at Y% interest paid in Z months" and "$A paid in Z months at no interest".

Also, because IOUs are powerful in Ripple, it's not clear who should charge who interest. As an intermediary, you exchange one IOU for another. Presumably you consider these IOUs equal in value (or you are getting a more valuable IOU for a less valuable IOU) otherwise you wouldn't make the deal. So why should anyone pay you interest after an even exchange?

Thank you for the input.
This whole beast sure is complicated, once you start diggin' and playin' :-)
Compared to that, Bitcoin is simple and straight-forward. Lets see who the first person is to explain ripple to their mom - I'll try once I understand it fully ;-)

1349  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ripple: let's test it! on: March 14, 2013, 01:58:12 PM
Why doesen't ripple contain contracts on interest rates etc. So I trust XXX for 1 BTC at 5% interest.

Yes, I agree on that.
Being able to set interest rates is necessary, in my opinion.
At the moment, with "input = output", I prefer to have a high line of credit, but try to trust others as little as possible.
Why? Having credit is like "free money", but having IOUs from others is a hassle. It reduces my liquidity or even forces me to leave the couch to get some physical cash back.
It's even more visible once there is a lot of "traffic" in ripple with many, long chains of trust. Then I transfer IOUs and money all the time, without being directly involved, like being a clearing point for my other contacts. Then it will really start to be a hassle, with no direct benefit for me.

If I can set, for example, a 0.1% fee for clearing my contact's transactions, and set x% per y days for lending, aka buying IOUs, I have an incentive for both clearing and buying IOUs.
This will get a lot of people on Ripple, this will get a lot of liquidity, short and reliable chains, this will bring publicity.

Of course I am totally ignoring the whole XRP discussion here.

Well, I guess it's impossible you missed the Ripple storm by now ;-)
No idea if it's to be considered state-of-the-art, or even fits your criteria, but it surely is the most active project, at the moment.

Less hassle with less/no bankwires needed, but obviously strongly non-anonymous..

1353  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [ANN] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: March 12, 2013, 05:05:32 PM
(remember, if I'm at home I don't need Trezor).

Huh

I view Trezor precisely as a way for non-technical people to protect their main chunk of Bitcoins, back at their homes, yes. Not as a way to move around your entire wallet and expose it to meatspace dangers frequently.
To walk around with Bitcoins, smartphones are good enough. You charge it with smaller amounts that you could afford to lose in the case of a malware infection, and you're good to go. No extra device to carry, since you'll be carrying your phone with you anyway.

I agree.

Now:
- Long-term coins on a paperwallet at home --> secure but inconvenient
- Some coins encrypted on my computer --> easy prey for keyloggers etc
- Few coins on my mobile --> hassle to back up and synchronize, or simply consider them lost

Later (tm):
- Everything in one trezor in different wallets, or two trezor
- Few coins on my mobile, with imported/exported/synched keys on the trezor or elsewhere

I don't plan to have the trezor with me any time at all. I need bitcoins outside? Mobilephone with exported+backupped keys at home.

Is there any free alternative to http://mtgoxlive.com/orders ?

I cannot get it to load
bitcoin.clarkmoody.com
bitcoinity.org/markets
coinlab.com/chart

Here's an interesting one that graphs a "stability" metric of some sort. Check out the complete nose dive on the 30 day chart.

https://www.canadianbitcoins.com/graphs.php

and also check the 365 day chart, quite interesting !

A chart which is that dependent on the timescale seems worthless to me.. Come on, you don't recognize anything when switching scales.. :-)
Also, I need an explanation how the "% stability" is calculated.
And yes, I agree, we are in a pretty unsteady period. :-)
