I hope the rise of Bitcoin puts WU out of business, those scammers!  $10 fee to send $500 is ridiculous.  And people complain about mining fees!

How much does it cost to take $500 USD, send it to an exchange, buy BTC on the market, send it to someone, have them sell it on the market at a different exchange, wire it to themselves, then take it out of an ATM? $45+? Thought so.

WU are not scammers. WU is basically a centralized version of bitcoin, but where everything is closed up and behind curtains. Take a breath.

$500 -> Dwolla: $.25
$500 Dwolla -> MtGox: $.25
$500 MtGox -> X BTC: $2.75
XBTC -> International recipient XBTC: less than a penny
XBTC -> MtGox $500: $2.75
$500 MtGox -> Dwolla: $.25
Dwolla -> $500: $.25

Total cost: $6.50
ATM fee if withdrawing cash: $2.00 (if not using your bank ATM)
New Total: $8.50 (if not using your own bank ATM)

And that is international transfer, and the recipient can cash out in their own currency and not pay extra for currency exchange. And a bigger bonus...they could just keep it in Bitcoins and spend it.

Cost of lost opportunity while you wait a week for your MtGox ID to be verified?

WU delivers in 30 minutes in most cases. I think I'd prefer paying the extra $1.50 for that.
1722  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Relationship Thread: G/F, Wife, Significant Other...etc... Tales... on: March 27, 2013, 08:42:47 PM
I'm single and when I'm on a date (never a first date) I love to talk about Bitcoin and explain how it works just to test the other person's reaction. I honestly don't care whether they like Bitcoin or not; it is really just a test of how open minded they are to new ideas, especially ideas which conflict with something they already believe. If they aren't capable of adopting new concepts and ideas, how are they going to share new concepts with me? One person to whom I explained Bitcoin had no response. When I asked for one I just got "Well it's interesting, I just don't think it'll work."

As if it doesn't already work.

For a variety of reasons I don't talk to that person anymore.

Well, if everyone believe it'd work, then great ideas would be automatic successes.

The Apple computer and the HP exec telling Woz that they weren't interested in a personal computer...
IBM execs telling Bill Gates the money was on the hardware...
MP3's
e-mail
file sharing services
streaming...
so many ideas were perceived as flawed or unfeasible...
But anyways, I'm off-topic here Smiley

You basically illustrated my point. One girl says "I don't think bitcoin will work", so a neckbeard breaks up with her instead of just being patient because "fuck anyone who has a different religious, political or technological opinion than me!".  Roll Eyes
1723  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: $324000 per day on: March 27, 2013, 08:23:16 PM
The miners are currently being paid an equivalent of about $324000 per day through the block reward. (about 90 USD per BTC, 25 BTC per block, 144 blocks per day)

Do you think this amount is a reasonable amount to keep the network going?

The Federal Reserve is currently pumping $1 billion into the Federal Reserve Note per day. Is this a reasonable amount?

"Lesser of two evils" argument? Boo. Bitcoin should stand on its own merits, and be defending logically, not emotionally. If there's something wrong with it, fix it or move to something else.
1724  Other / Off-topic / Re: I'd like to ask for some help. on: March 27, 2013, 08:18:41 PM
Matt would do better paying off everyone you owe and not paying you anything.  (It would be cheaper fit him too)

Back when I had already accepted my mistake and began manning up to it (50% are already paid and taken care of) I had actually messaged the forum mods for their advice on paying his victims in his absence, but then the very good point was raised that if I did that, I would also have to start looking into paying people who lost something due to the bet, lost something who trusted someone else who bet, etc etc etc the list goes on.

In short, I'm simply making a peace offering to people because I believe it's the right thing to do. Everyone involved who has responded has agreed to this. BTC Guy is just grandstanding, looking for more suckers to send him money before he runs off again and knows that posting in a Matthew thread will get him the most attention. Work on getting your scammer tag removed BTC Guy. When you're doing paying people, I'll be happy to negotiate as I have, and pay you a settlement as I have already done for 50% of the individuals in my bet so far.

sadly true :/ bitcoins biggest issue is getting them. we need a solution to this.

It's difficult because the problem lies with the traditional banking system.

..and not at all with Western Union, who is basically doing the same thing anyone could while using Bitcoin if they had friends helping them in different parts of the world. Anyone bashing WU is just jealous that they aren't doing the same thing *with* Bitcoin.

it was one of the things that bound Bruce and is partner together it seemed.

That and a male prostitution business.
1727  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Open Letter to Instawallet on: March 27, 2013, 07:29:34 PM
That's enough grandstanding, TheFounder. Kicking and screaming is going to push them to ignore you even more.

As for instawallet, they're probably embarrassed and considering how to respond. Give them time. What is it with this community and an inherent sense of entitlement?
1728  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Relationship Thread: G/F, Wife, Significant Other...etc... Tales... on: March 27, 2013, 07:14:20 PM
Judging by the responses, I'd be surprised if anyone responding wasn't single.
1729  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: $324000 per day on: March 27, 2013, 06:51:25 PM
Also keep in mind that the network difficulty tends to be directly correlated to the exchange rate.  Right now the few ASIC owners are making an incredible profit while everyone else's mining proceeds are staying somewhat consistent.  Of course the exchange rate changes faster than the network difficulty, but my point is that over time mining will eventually stabilize to be moderately profitable as it's always been.  The value of the mined coins may increase significantly but that in turn will lead to more miners and a resulting higher difficulty.

Yep, snaps like a rubber band in slow motion. Eventually everything returns to normal until someone stretches the rubber band again with a new technology.

Anyone who would break up with their girlfriend over their opinion of bitcoin is a sad SOB imo. That's like breaking up with her because of her religion, or simply for her political views. If you break up with her, make it because she's generally irrational on all subjects and is unworkable as a partner for the long term. Otherwise, I would be telling her "time to find another boyfriend".

My girlfriend watches the open orders charts all the time with interest, and she's often wanted to learn to be a day trader simply because of bitcoin. Where did you find your girlfriend?
1732  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Fake Scams to try and discredit Bitcoin! on: March 27, 2013, 06:33:21 PM
In further response to this topic, there is a growing sense of "religion" to bitcoin and it's quite sickening. Yes, every following needs supporters, but support should be logical, not emotional. Once you hear people screaming in your ear that "if you don't use bitcoin, you're going to lose!" then it becomes a ponzi scheme, fraud, and you start to see everyone around you as being delusional. I know that's not exact, as many do truly see the potential bitcoin can bring, but look at OP for example. Instead of just admitting that an anonymous currency is basically a hacker/thiefs wet dream and that the scamming will obviously get worse over time, he'd prefer to paint the paranoid picture that people are out to get it. Sound familiar, Christians?

...
As for the general topic of discrediting bitcoin, bitcoiners do that pretty well by themselves. If everyone here talked like Yifu Guo, we'd probably already be there by now. Instead, they all talk like dank.

Heh, true.

Sup with you around here Matthew? Preparing for the next "big thing"? Don't know why I had you on ignore.

Will PM.
1733  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Fake Scams to try and discredit Bitcoin! on: March 27, 2013, 06:25:11 PM
It seems that detractors of Bitcoin will stop at nothing to try and discredit it. I often search for the last hour of results in Google to try and find the latest news about Bitcoin. Today I found this link:
http://financialsurvivalnetwork.com/2013/03/confessions-of-a-bitcoin-scammer/

It was created by TruthNeverTold who seems to have issues with Bitcoin. He references another article:
http://nerdr.com/bitcoin-exchange-scam-bitcoins-are-worthless/

The details provided are of course always vague, but they try to support the fact that the price on an exchange was manipulated. I find the article to be total nonsense and most likely totally fabricated.

I often see other results such as "Bitcoin Crash" in which the website operator obviously is just changing a small amount of content to get their article on the forking incident (or others) to appear more recent in Google.

It seems that since everything has been going so well for Bitcoin lately, that detractors must invent some "Fake Scams" to make the headlines and try and discredit it.

It would be interesting to see what other "Fake Scam" articles others have encountered.

It always bothered me that pro-bitcoiners with so much imagination would often miss the most simplest of explanations. When someone is holding bitcoin, they want good news about bitcoin to be heard. When someone knows bitcoin will be worth a lot later but didn't get to buy in cheap, they want bad news about bitcoin to be heard, until they can buy in.

As for the general topic of discrediting bitcoin, bitcoiners do that pretty well by themselves. If everyone here talked like Yifu Guo, we'd probably already be there by now. Instead, they all talk like dank.

Ive always liked the idea of SI prefixes.

millibit, microbit, nanobit for short.

But that's not what this thread is aboot.

Don't you mean 'abit'?

I didn't see a single thing wrong with what he said.

now we have scammers infighting......

I guess it's better than inbreeding.
1737  Other / Off-topic / Re: I'd like to ask for some help. on: March 27, 2013, 05:26:07 PM
what does Matthew gain from paying you back?
matthew gets to accept responsibility for his actions and clear his name. its a learning experience for him. it will give him good character. his actions will also insure the people i burned are repaid.

Where is the 250 BTC you would have given me if I won? You can't repay anyone you scammed without me giving you money, then you couldn't pay me if I had won.
1738  Other / Off-topic / Re: I'd like to ask for some help. on: March 27, 2013, 05:14:12 PM
Since BTC guy's other accounts are not scammer tagged, maybe Matthew should registered Matthew N Wright (sans the period) so that he could have a clean account to conduct viable business. If ever it's brought to the attention of the newly named account referencing the scammed account, Matthew would simply address those concerns politely, then refer those to the other account where they will be addressed accordingly.

That's equivalent to evading a ban imo. Besides, I'm not proud of my own behavior in the past, but it's who I am and I own it. It's like watching someone working out as a skinny weakling and meeting them later in life when they're buff, and them denying that they were ever skinny and weak. They simply wouldn't. They'd be beaming and proud of their change. I'd be robbing myself of that I guess.

For an extreme example, Sonny, the CEO of BFL, is a convicted criminal who was arrested for a fraud basically doing exactly what BFL is doing now, and people still send them money. Do you really think a scammer tag is going to keep me from doing business, having friends, getting married, investing, learning, collaborating, and supporting projects? It's more likely that the bad habit of creating sock puppets (like some others here) will leak into their real lives and make them cowards. No thanks!
1739  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This is hilarious... on: March 27, 2013, 05:00:29 PM
You guys laugh, but in many circumstances, Western Union kicks bitcoin's balls in like an experienced prostitute being manhandled in an alleyway.

The only complaint I have about WU is that the Korean banks are tied in with them (there is no WU branch in Korea that isn't at a bank teller's window), so they really don't like using it for certain amounts, in any certain frequency, etc. One time I went in and they made me wait 3 hours, just to tell me that I wasn't allowed to receive money from that bank branch again until I opened an account, then told me that I might as well just wire it through their bank instead.

Other than that single case in Korea, I think WU is not only better than Bitcoin (no exchange fees, wire fees, loss of value due to market fluctuation, can use credit card, etc) at sending money overseas, why anyone would prefer bitcoin who doesn't already have it is beyond me. Now for people who already hold bitcoins, obviously WU is a step backwards, of course.

bump

As I understand it, Matthew is buying back his reputation. What reputation do you have to sell to him, if any?

That's not true, and I already told you the reason in PM. It's not a matter of reputation. Everyone here knows I think many bitcoiners are retarded, delusional and irrational thinkers who have no place in the real world. This is about integrity. Just because I think someone is an idiot, doesn't mean I have the right to screw with their finances and get their hopes up. I deserve this punishment for crossing a very serious line, there is no doubt about it. It's kind of like going out drifting with your friends because "fuck the police" (done it), and ending up getting in a wreck and someone gets hurt. How can any sane person feel good about that afterwards? As the driver, I feel awful. I just want to make sure everyone in that car and outside is taken care of. It's not an issue of if I'm allowed to drive again, no one can stop me from driving again, not here, not anywhere. I don't need permission from people on an internet forum to drive. This is about being on my death bed and knowing I didn't do the right thing when I screwed up.

Having said that, I am positive there were numerous people who had no intention of paying me if they lost (because I have received numerous messages admitting to that). For an admitted scammer/welcher to come here demanding I pay him without realizing he's like #118 on the list of people before him who are also demanding to be paid, he's delusional. Doing the right thing would be ignoring him completely to be honest. The only reason I would ever begin to settle with him is because without settling with him, it leaves this issue open forever. I'm not going to settle with a scammer though, there's no debating that.
