It's a real bummer if you have a goal of not paying bills because you don't like debts or just like to keep things simple (for example)

it's also a real bummer if you always use a PO box for all your mail and have practically nothing with your home address printed on it.
1962  Economy / Speculation / Re: Our manipulator appears to be selling now on: November 20, 2011, 01:38:17 AM
The fact that there are computer generated bid walls and computer generated sell walls sure does confuse me.

that's only confusing if you think the world runs off just one computer.
1963  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Gambling game. Very addicting! on: November 19, 2011, 02:44:19 AM
The referral link part has been edited out.

not for me it hasn't. you just edited out what it looks like, but the real link (hover over it) still has the ID.

neat trick.

I guess he could be spoofing the agent string.

i was going to say '118' looks like Australia. which service told you it was China? (other than the IE6 usage Cheesy)
1965  Other / Off-topic / Re: jquery document.ready on: November 15, 2011, 09:46:30 AM
one waits for the page to complete loading, then do actions in the background. if you put this at the top of a page, with a slow thing, it waits for the page to finish
other fires wherever it hits (blocking, non-async) if you put this at the top of a page, it won't finish rendering until it returns

no, they are functionally identical... both only fire when the 'document' is 'ready'... one is just a shorter way of writing it, but i've seen hundreds of examples all over the web that has the longer version in it.
1966  Economy / Speculation / Re: 3 is the magic number, and the magic number is 3 on: November 14, 2011, 09:11:14 PM
I guarantee you that in two weeks the price will be below $3

-Nov 7th

Call me a clairvoyant.

i just realised Dan the Man is short for Dan the Manipulator... that's how come he always knows what's going to happen.
1967  Other / Off-topic / jquery document.ready on: November 13, 2011, 09:10:25 AM
if these are 100% equivalent, why on earth would anyone ever use the longer version?

$(document).ready(handler)
$(handler)

i really wonder.

If land (in the outback) is relatively cheap and housing (near the city) relatively expensive why aren't people buying land in the outback, building houses and commuting to their city jobs for 6 hours per day thus making nice profits increasing supply and lowering price?

The outback's a lot further than six hours away from any of the capital cities.  It's a lot more than six hours away from even the regional centres where there are almost zero employment opportunities.  It would also be cheaper to buy an established house in the bush than to build a new one.  The price of new materials and labour doesn't change with location whereas the price of existing real estate does.

the 'outback' is what city-folk like me like to call anything further than 20 mins away from the cbd.
1969  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Possible to buy foreclosed houses with bitcoin? on: November 09, 2011, 09:40:44 PM
Well in Australia you can buy land and then rent it out to farmers. That is more profitable than buying houses and renting them out to people which is usually at a loss; taken as a tax deduction called negative gearing.

You can get an idea of how expensive houses are in Australia by looking at these new house and land packages here:

http://www.wowhomes.com.au/packages

These are in Suburbs really far from the CBD sometimes almost an hours drive and Perth is only a small city e.g. about 1.4 million people.

Sometimes you can buy a house on a mortgage and rent out each room and just break even but you are taking all the risk.

So what is blocking supply and demand?

Distance from the CBD.

If land (in the outback) is relatively cheap and housing (near the city) relatively expensive why aren't people buying land in the outback, building houses and commuting to their city jobs for 6 hours per day thus making nice profits increasing supply and lowering price?

Govt interference?

yeah in general to break even in perth you'd need to put in about 50% cash. i.e. for a $500,000 house, you need to put in about $250,000 and borrow the other $250,000 so that your mortgage is approximately the same level as the rent.

negative gearing won't mean much for you caston because i'm guessing your tax bill on $20k isn't much ($500 p.a.?).

As I said I would do, I'm here to indicate that I received my first interest payment today, exactly as promised. I also lent pirateat40 some more BTC.

Can't wait for the front end. Smiley

i also got mine.
1972  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: site with API for unconfirmed transactions? on: November 08, 2011, 09:20:42 PM
Hi,

Sorry, didn't quite follow what you last wrote -- something like a site where getting site.awesome.com/<addr>, where the request would stall till a transaction targeting that address arrived, would that be what you're looking for?

Thanks,
--vs;

no, it wouldn't stall, it would just return "received":"0" and you'd have to sleep(10) and poll it again later.
1973  Other / Meta / Re: No more signature images on: November 08, 2011, 09:17:41 PM
anyone else think it's funny this policy is coming from the owner of the most bland bitcoin site ever (blockexplorer.com)?
1974  Economy / Services / Re: [NEW] www.BTCWebHost.com - Affordable & Tech Savvy Bitcoin Ready Web Hosting on: November 08, 2011, 11:48:10 AM
This is unlimited web space, not an unlimited hard drive that you can just dump all your episodes of my little pony onto to share with your friends, if it's abused you will certainly lose the privilege, however if your website exceeds 10, 20, 30 gb that is fine , key word here: Web Space.

and as a matter of fact GoDaddy one of the worlds largest hosting providers offers an unlimited web space plan as well. Why are you not writing to them and asking them why they are breaking the laws of physics?

Thanks for looking and have a great day  Smiley

can your customers upload 144 terabytes worth of 'web files' on that 'unlimited' web space?

use of the word 'unlimited' is false advertising here, albeit a very common type of false advertising, just like godaddy and other big companies use.
1975  Other / Meta / Re: No more signature images on: November 08, 2011, 08:43:00 AM
images may be off-topic, but they add colour, warmth and entertainment value that is hard to quantify.

without them, i imagine the forum a bland, boring, wall of text, and i will likely visit much less once i tie up a few loose ends.

1977  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do I merge my wallets? on: November 08, 2011, 03:07:24 AM
I believe you can do it with pywallet:
https://github.com/joric/pywallet

I've used it to import private keys into an existing wallet.

You can use it to dump the keys from the first wallet, then import the dumped keys into the second wallet.

It doesn't appear to have been updated to work with 0.4.0 encrypted wallets yet, so use with caution.

i installed pywallet and it's pretty good at what it does.

but the fundamental part it lacks is importing multiple keys... i mean i kind of would have expected it to be able to read it's own 'dump' output, but no, you have to do them one at a time which unfortunately renders the feature useless to me in all practicality.
1978  Other / Meta / Re: No more signature images on: November 08, 2011, 03:03:35 AM
Theymos - Please retract this policy.

The signature graphics are a fundamental part of the community. They allow a means of visual expression in what is otherwise a dull text world. Some bars are ugly, some are cool, some are informative, some are annoying. Whatever... they are expression, and the forum is made better for it.

Not to mention, the sig bars add tremendous ability for businesses in the bitcoin world to get some awareness. Personally, I really like finding out about new businesses and sites in the sig bar graphics. They help seed new ventures, and cross-pollinate ideas. Again, some are annoying or useless, but that's part of the package.

Net-net, sig bar images make the forum better. Removing them is a very bad idea and damages what some of us here enjoy as a very strong and dynamic community.

Please reconsider.

I'm signing this.

one more vote.

another vote, with highlighting.
1979  Other / Meta / Re: No more signature images on: November 07, 2011, 11:28:42 PM

So we have banned signature bar images

Now I can't help but notice you are trying to raise money for the forum buy selling advertising (which I totally support):

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=51013.0

and I can't help but think that maybe this signature bar thing has a little something to do with the fact that Signature Bar Images not only are Free Advertising but they are at times Superior Free Advertising to the kind you are trying to sell for the forum.

And seriously all due respect to Thymos and the rest of the staff you guys do an awesome job here - but I have a hard time believing this decision was made purely because "the signature images are a mess"

any thoughts?

it's a little ridiculous... if you're so offended by signature images, go here instead: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=printpage;topic=51077.msg609387;topicseen#new

i feel like it's one more reason to frequent other forums and try to escape this one.
1980  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: site with API for unconfirmed transactions? on: November 07, 2011, 02:45:46 PM
i was actually referred to bitcoinnotify.com but i suspect they make you specify your address beforehand, rather than pass it to an api on-the-fly.

eg. somedomain.com?addr=blahblahblah might return {"address":"blahblahblah","totalunconfirmed":"12.45"}

if you have to specify 'blahblahblah' when you sign up then it wouldn't be very useful at all.

edit: yeah i was right, i signed up and it works by getting a list of your receiving addresses and then i guess notifies you whenever any of them get funded.

i was thinking more along the lines of a site that generates a unique address per user (maybe thousands and thousands of users), and then having some api somewhere that it could poll to see if the customer sent the money or not.

all without running bitcoind.
