I feel like it's about time again to get some random newschooler completely stoked by showing him the windows registry  Cheesy

i remember playing with regedit

step 0: image system drive to local backup
step 2: image system drive again to different local media
step 3: image system drive again to different physical location.
step 4: PROFIT!   well fun anyway trying to fix what that random thing was you did in the registry that broke windows.. without doing a restore. educational.

Sorry for being a total smartass, but I can't resist any further  Grin

To be correct there are twice 65k ports, each UDP and TCP.
And since I am being an asshat already, it is 65536 ports, 65535 is just the highest port, but we computer people start counting at 0.

merited for being an anal retentive type.

2026  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My first visit to Bitcoin. Share your fast visit price on: May 29, 2020, 10:12:38 AM
~$10 USD in 2011. i mined using a gpu and i think the mtgox price was what i used.

and then of course the price dropped to $2 USD for the next year or so. a pattern that i now know well.
2027  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 29, 2020, 10:02:45 AM

this should be pinned. or stickied, whatever the term is.

There once was a coiner, whose name was mindrust,
He posted in WO, and gained our trust.
But little did he know,
He would suffer a blow,
When he did the unthinkable, and sold all his stash!

Even r0ach would agree that this move was quite baffling,
It's Bitcoin 101, you just don't sell pre-Halving.
But his mind was all rusted,
It was Masterluc he trusted,
So he blindly followed his all-bearish rumbling!

He blames COVID-19 for his panic reaction,
"Armageddon is coming, I just had to take action."
Now his Bitcoins are sold,
He is turning to gold,
In a desperate attempt to get some satisfaction.

Many WO'ers advised him to buy back some corn,
But he just couldn't live with the thought of being wrong.
Now he hears of Bitcoin,
And gets a pain in his groin,
Because deep down he knows, that his chance is now gone!

I know that those limericks are shitty as hell,
And I know that Jimbo's shit, as everyone's, smell.
I just hope that they serve,
To help us all keep our nerve,
And never ever give in to the pressure to sell!

And if all of the above hasn't made you, mindrust,
Reconsider, and quickly get some corn in your stash,
It won't be r0aches or ants,
At the seat of your pants,
But the boot of a HoDLer kicking your stubborn fat ass!

2028  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 29, 2020, 09:17:33 AM
True, but don't forget about fractional reserve: do you believe every exchange plays by the rules by maintaining a full reserve? This is not the case and in fact by looking at the amount of BTC that are leaving exchanges this is becoming a big thing.

proof of keys day exists for this reason. January 3rd. pull all btc (indeed anything else too) from any exchanges you may have some corn/whatever in.

What's a port scan?

Arrie, I am not talking down to you at all, this is genuine advise;

if you are going to use the internet you should educate yourself about the basic mechanics of the hazards involved.

That's why I'm asking, I can't protect myself if I don't know what to protect me from.

ports can be an open door into your computer. its why you dont want them open except for very specific circumstances.

there are ~64k ports. some are dedicated to certian functions. others are chosen by the program.

for example the bitcoin wallet uses ports to find and communicate with other nodes.

In other news: Want a free portscan of your Wind0ze PC?
Just visit Ebay or Citibank and you'll get one for free:

https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/231966/web-sites-executing-local-port-scans-is-this-coming-from-a-library-can-it-be-b

https://nullsweep.com/why-is-this-website-port-scanning-me/

https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2020/05/websites_conduc.html

But I have been assured it is only to our best and they promise not to abuse it. So if you don't have anything to hide..

oh, isn't that just fucking wonderful...

very interesting.

i visited ebay just now, no local host port scans here (following the direction shown to bring the console up etc). firefox and win10 pro, all latest patch level. i do have some ff addons activated, perhaps thats it? no clue really.

ive got a somewhat odd network setup so maybe thats it but since im an idiot when it comes to networking i doubt its something i did deliberately.

btw i do port scans fairly regularly via shieldsup or whatever that site is and it always passes even the long extended tests. if there are better ways PLEASE someone chime in.

2033  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Taxes on Bitcoins: Unreasonable or essential? on: May 27, 2020, 12:36:39 PM
What do guys think ?
Should the government place taxes on Bitcoins or should they let it be? Since they are not helping cryptocurrencies in any way, I do think they should stop making profits out of people. A reasonable tax percentage should be applied ofcourse, but it does not give them the right to label the cryptocurrencies as free money . They should understand that it's a serious issue and if some money is coming from cryptocurrencies, they should at least use 1% of it to educate people about cryptocurrencies.

How much is the taxation on Bitcoins in your country ? Is it reasonable or government is just trying to make profit out of it ?

in the usa if you make a profit in any form, you pay taxes on it.

buy a coin for $10,000, sell for $20,000. pay taxes on the difference.. so $10,000 would be taxed. capitol gains if held more than a year. regular income if less.

dunno bout you but i smile when paying taxes (however i may not approve of how its spent amd given away.. thats another story though) because after all i made money . dont want to pay taxes? dont make money. simple.

i may be off a bit on the terminology though.

#in the poop

This graph is amazing. It shows that measuring #SARSCoV2 levels in municipal sewage almost perfectly predicts forthcoming #COVID19 cases with a full week's notice (R=0.994). It's one of several discoveries in this new study from @Yale: https://medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.19.20105999v1.full.pdf. C-19 is #InThePoop

Any volunteers? To examine the poop?

septic tank user unaffected.

however i will ship samples to anyone interested. maybe.

EDIT probable major misunderstanding on my part. as usual.

Since I believe that Everett's interpretation is correct, thereby all time travel stories are largely irrelevant.
It would be a new timeline and nothing would be the same.
I do enjoy reading alternative history books, though, as they tease my imagination.

On this forum and reddit, we already had several time traveler stories, which typically start well, then deviate from our reality.
I consider them mostly pure entertainment, but the term "citadels" (as far as referring to areas of higher prosperity/bitcoiner concentration) came from one of these.

larry nivens take on time travel is thus.

assume in a timeline you can time travel. well, sooner or later someone will change the past so that time travel is impossible. therefore, time travel will always become impossible and THIS is the timeline where it was messed with to become impossible.

QED. or something like that.
2036  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 27, 2020, 10:45:43 AM

Beyond that, it would not be proper to discuss BTC, other than to say it is very much a part of day to day life before I left for the trip back. What do you think was responsible for helping to fund most of the research into time travel mind blowing brain cell burning delusion inducing drugs?

ftfy

not that im against those types of drugs just to be clear.
2037  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So it looks like Cobra is planning on passing on the Bitcoin.org domain on: May 26, 2020, 11:18:14 AM

I would probably sell it to Binance for like $10 million.

They bought Coinmarketcap.  CZ said they plan to keep it independent and neutral.  The only major change they have made is moving Binance to the top of the "Exchanges" tab.

They are rich enough that they would never be tempted to sell the domain to a Bcasher.

holy fuck. where did this idiot come from. and who bought him? or sprung him from the funny farm. or whatever.

At least if Brazil legalizes guns we can start seriously considering it as a seastead destination.

The Atlantic Ocean off of Brazil is a vast open area with no hurricanes and low waves.

We have not considered it due to the crime.

those composite 3d printed seastead mock ups of yours dont look very protective when the ordinance starts flying.

hide in the steel spar? how to return fire? remote turrets?

see: waterworld for an (extreme and somewhat satiric) example.

perhaps im being punked on this though.

ok im sure this is easy enough for me to find on my own (if i were smart enough which is debatable) but where is a list of the csw tulip list that i can import into a spreadsheet to compare against my own addys (my wallet.dat is the original from 2011 and is still in use today). not that any go back past 2011  but it might be entertaining to see if any belong to me.

if any are mine i assure you the message i will sign will be epic.

We might have a little bit of different ideas about masks, and I don't really consider them to be necessary when outdoors (especially if no one is around) or if you are in your car by yourself, so I have seen people wearing masks in those circumstances, and just seems to be overkill to me, but of course a personal choice, and great that they have masks, and  I understand that if someone just gets used to wearing a mask a lot of the time, then maybe they will fidget around less with it.

lotta cars have HEPA filters on the fresh air (cowl) intakes now. unsure what the rating is though.

check the manuals for your wheels.

and of course you need to know how to set the hvac controls correctly, including allowing for exhaust direction due to windows being open etc. rtfm dyor

maybe they are not enough, unsure but hey look it up for your make and model.
