2241  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Anywhere to cash out 40k worth of coin quickly? (Within a month?) on: December 17, 2013, 06:47:33 PM
If you show up at most any local meetup, meetup.com you can likely arrange something with someone in person as well.
40K in Bitcoin can get picked up pretty fast.
Have had buyers show up at meets looking for 100x that much.

You have had multiple people looking for 4 million in btc?

Come on, man.

Yes.  This is LA, why are you surprised?
2242  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: December 17, 2013, 06:33:59 PM

that's a very crude attempt at a correlation.  and potentially very misleading.
And yet a very common one that is relied on by many...

Would you aver that the relative value of commodities is independent of the dilution of fiat currencies in which they are measured?  The chart starts at where they diverge at the closing of the gold window.
If the dollar were still a hard money currency, rather than backed by debt only, the commodity fluctuations would be more dependent on things like industrial demand and supply and less the devaluation of the dollar.

The point of the chart is that once BTC is mainstream, it ought also follow a valuation based on fiat debts.
It may have the ability to encourage honest money from the governments of the world as a global settlement mechanism.

This is the role that gold once had.

moving forward there will never be a time that we will have privacy from government. the age of privacy is and forever will be a thing of the past. the good news is that the internet is a two way looking glass. for the first time in history we can stare right back at them.  Grin

2244  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoins for Edward Snowden. on: December 17, 2013, 06:22:29 PM

To be fair, Snowden made this all about him anyway.  In front of the camera from day 1, regular interviews and statements, flirting with various countries for asylum, etc.

"flirting"Huh  What would have had him do instead...just come back to the USA and spend a life in prison?  Very weird veiew you have of it is struggle for survival.

Snowden didn't have editorial control.  What you saw is what the media wanted you to see, and what would sell advertisements.
Media is the natural ally of the government propaganda in these cases.  What sells the adverts is also what hurts the whistleblower the most.  The focus on the person, the human interest drama, the chase scene.
All the hard facts and technical details about why the whistleblower did it and what was revealed is only a minor element in the plot of the story.  Those are purely secondary to the love interests, the sordid pasts, the flight vs the captivity.

To the extent that Bitcoin takes the role of gold, we have this to look forward to:

How will we know when bitcoin is an asset class?
When cryptocurrency gets mentioned in the BASEL Accords.

Proper price of gold currently: around 1600.

Proper price of bitcoin?  A lot more...

Please report every single shop that sells gold or other precious metals and has a facility to post them to customers. And every shop that allows you to send them gold in exchange for cash.

Seriously. They are all money transmitters and if not regulated, they are breaking the law. File an online report to FinCen, its your duty to help protect the US of A.

Is this really the case? Wasn't gold demonetized in the US? The Bernank calls it an "asset".

Gold has its own set of rules.  Dealers still have to report on purchases or sales over a certain amount, but its mainly to prevent gold being used as a tax shelter, from what I've been told.

It also depends on whether it's bars of gold bullion or coins being sold, as the requirements for reporting sales / purchases of coins is less stringent.

Mike, you may want to look into the laws for selling your Silver coins specifically, because there are specific rules regarding precious metals that might serve as a loophole under which you can clearly operate without doing KYC/AML.

There's not so much a loophole, as an entirely separate reporting regime for taxation purposes, though both IRS, and FinCEN are branches of the treasury dept, CFTC which governs reporting requirements for coins/bullion is an independent agency.  Its more the case that if Mike were putting stickers on American Eagles, he could run afoul of another reporting problem.
http://www.coinworld.com/articles/what-coins-are-reportable
FinCEN isn't a "revenue" (taxing) authority, it is the white collar crime enforcement branch of the treasury dept.  There is a lot of regulatory authority in the US for this stuff, but the FinCEN involvement is a bit weird, out of place.  It is hard to see where they have any reasonable interest worthy of such concerns.

Lol, china wins for curves this time and stamp gets disqualified for turtling Smiley

In reality.. the smartest people are those on BTCChina waiting for all time lows if this exchange is going down.. hey all my cash into btc sell at another exchange when the prices stabilizes....and while I am at it I'll just move to a country that likes human rights and I can do so now that my fiat is in btc except for the plane, train or automobile ticket.

Except they don't realize their country is shit any more than Americans do.

come to Canada then, were not so bad. But no where is really perfect can't wait till Goat buys an island and we can move there and start a btc only community.

I know this got buried, but Goat at least 2 people are willing to vote you for El Presidente of your own Island lol I'll pitch some btc if were getting a share of the island Cheesy

Been looking at islands for a while now but btc still has a way to go before this happens.

Well keep us in the loop a btc pool to start a new civilization sounds like fun. Wasn't suggesting the Island had to be in Canada ..but let choose somewhere safe from most global warming and tsunami's not caused by meteors bigger the a football field hitting the ocean.

+1 To all good things about this idea. I can build things, actual things... like houses and furniture-- I'm basically a sustainable carpenter/builder who's switching into coding, as I've gotten bored of building (kinda). I could put together a nice natural compound FWIW.

It is not an island, but in a pretty remote part of Malibu:

One of the barns is shaping up into a nice little furniture / cabinetry / carpentry factory.
So if you are handy with the woodworking, potential extra benefits and revenue.

Had a great time in Vegas. Amazing people, great speakers, and a beautiful Tutu.

Wanted to let you guys know that I'm putting on the next great conference in Miami Beach at the end of January, so you can meet all your favorite people again, and reconnect with the ones you've met in Vegas.

We'd love to see you.

Our website is http://www.btcmiami.com and we have a 5% off promotional code for members of bitcointalk

https://bitcoinmiami.eventbrite.co.uk/?discount=welovebitcointalk

Best,
Moe

I have some high hopes for this one. I think that Miami is going to be the best conference yet.

How often is it that the leaders of the new free world gather together and invite you to join?
If you are not going to be there, you should ask yourself what could possibly be more important, and you will swiftly realize that you are wrong and that you should go.

In China its better than US.
The banks will still work with you in China.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1t0yk5/final_word_from_my_rep_at_chase_all

yea as long as you can still move money via banks it doesn't seem a big deal, certainly better than it is for us in Australia in moving $ to an overseas exchange, the fees are crazy.

http://money.msn.com/top-stocks/post--the-hottest-investment-in-2014-bitcoin

The US banks are starting to run away, scared.  This is pretty weird when you think about it for a minute.  Why should they be afraid, the have biggest powers in the world wrapped around their fingers..
Do they fear competition, innovation?
They rely on big buildings to make them appear stable and solid, but it is just a front.  None of them have been solvent for a long time except by stealing, cheating, and extortion (If you don't give us all your money, we wreck the world, if you don't use your power to take money from everyone and give it to us, you all die.  We're too big to fail, now make us bigger).

Is it not the case that most 3rd party payment providers in the US won't go near bitcoin exchanges with a barge pole? And if so, is the situation in China now not pretty similar?

Well ladies and gents, this flushing is going to tell us A LOT about the state of bitcoin and where the money has come and is coming from.

We won't be able to see the full picture for months or at least weeks, but when we can see it, we will know much better about what kind of investors made up the rally in the East, which ones are long term and where future money can and can't come from there - AND maybe more importantly, we will know how much of the rally really came from the East and how much really came from the West.

And I suspect we will never have to worry about China "leading" the markets again. Which is A - O - K  with me.

I was with you up until the last sentence, Honey Badger, why the antipathy towards China?

I was never quite confident that China had any real long term future with bitcoin. And I would rather, in an ideal world, have bitcoin be driven by people in countries that have more freedoms, because from a PR standpoint it makes bitcoin appear more solid as well.

Places where freedom is dear, need it more.
Without need, no reason for bitcoin.
Unless the money is free, the people never can be.
Do not blame the people for the governments under which they suffer, many may be just like you in more ways than you might imagine, but less free to admit it.

It isn't the case, and it also wouldn't matter if gold were "money".  It still isn't money transmission in the sense of a regulated activity for simple merchants.  This isn't money laundering.

If your idea is to break the system through over-compliance, that would not result in anything better than the way things are.

More reasonable is Mike's method of doing the perfunctory compliance requested, and then challenging the justification for it.
He's not a money transmitter if you are selling to purchasers.
Money transmitters send money to those other than from whom they received them, and there isn't any evidence that Mike is doing that.
FinCEN is concerned that with the volume of money, there might be some folks making use of Mike's good will efforts to engage in their own money transfers by buying things for others without Mike knowing and probably think he should be making sure the folks paying for something are the folks receiving it, which takes a bit of KYC.

Alternatively if he sent the stuff signature-required, that would also probably cover himself too.  FinCEN is really barking up the wrong tree here.  Mike's simply a merchant selling a product.

You realize what this means right, the China market is pretty much dead in the water. Central bank won't allow for financial institutions to do business with bitcoin exchanges... Which only leaves the otc bitcoin market. There's no reason for anyone in China to hold bitcoins anymore. Everyone will sell and withdraw.

Right... because Chinese do no international trade....  lol

Exactly genius, so American will buy stuff from China, pay in bitcoin and the manufactures in China will pay the labor and materials with a currency that's worthless inside the country.

Win for USD as world reserve currency. Think man, THINK.

You don't really understand bitcoin, do you.

For international settlements, it is unbeatable.  They don't have to spend it domestically at retail.  USA is a consumer economy so it would matter in USA.  China isn't.
Get your head in the game man.

100 BTC per month is a lot even with the alpaca stud service included...

The local market rate in the area is around US$1600-2000/month for comparable, but frankly I'm more interested in high quality people than the money, which is why it is being advertised here way ahead of availability.

The last tenant was an artist, and had his most productive period while staying there.  But he just wasn't the same person after returning from Burningman.

Why does everyone hate Heineken.

It's one of the worst beers in the world that barely deserves the name beer.
If you have any respect for your taste buds you should limit yourself to Belgian beers and a select few from other countries.

There is only ONE good beer coming from the Netherlands and thats La Trappe.

Here's a tip, if you have any respect for Bitcoin, the next time one of the largest consumer brands in the world decides to help us out, instead of shit talking their product why don't you just smile, suck it up, and take one for the team.

Lol

Three issues with this post:

1. They did what they're doing for profit, not to help us out. Bitcoin is wonderful for merchants.
2. The idea that a company as large as this would read this forum and get butthurt and then change their "mind" is LOL.
3. It's genuinely a horrible beer.

Sorry sometimes we all have to troll.

Agreed, the team will do just fine without Heineken. Sorry, I can't change my mind, it's truly horrible...

/Forgive me!

McDonalds is not great food either, but if they accepted bitcoin, would that be so bad?
Walmart is not always the highest quality....

Lots of intJ here.  so heavy on the judgement that even good things are bad.
