2081  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Los Angeles (SoCal) Bitcoiners Meetup? on: January 04, 2014, 03:21:07 PM
There's an event on January 15th but it's not a "Meet-Up": Digital LA - Bitcoin: What You, Consumers, Merchants, Developers Need to Know
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/digital-la-bitcoin-what-you-consumers-merchants-developers-need-to-know-tickets-9886252046
Well, it kind of started as a meetup with Elizabeth Ploshay, back in mid-October… http://www.meetup.com/Los-Angeles-Bitcoin/events/146345162/

Good point.  I just don't think of meetups as ticket-selling events, but no reason they couldn't be.  There is also rumors of a new bi-weekly gathering bubbling up in West LA / Venice area.
2082  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoins for Edward Snowden. on: January 04, 2014, 06:24:55 AM
Well said.. It's unfortunate that our public news channels in the US are being used to propagate his demonization to the public.
It is not a one-sided discussion on the media.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/columnist/rieder/2014/01/02/does-edward-snowden-deserve-clemency/4288535/
New York Times and USA Today are widely circulated.

Quote from: Guardian as reprinted in USA Today
"We hope," the paper wrote, "that calm heads within the present administration are working on a strategy to allow Mr Snowden to return to the US with dignity, and the president to use his executive powers to treat him humanely and in a manner that would be a shining example about the value of whistleblowers and of free speech itself."

Hope for the best for you and your family.
2084  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: January 04, 2014, 05:10:44 AM
@Developers - Can I send BTC to you and burn them for me?
I want to get in ASAP and it is a bit unfair for me as a mac user - I trust that when you will have a working client you will send the XCP back to me!

@Folks who have this running.
I'd like to burn BTC for some XCP, but can't burn the time to rig the environment for this.  If you can escrow for me, I can give you up to the difference in XCP of the early reward for time and the end of month reward.  January is fairly well slotted with other project commitments.
Please PM with your successful burn transactions.

We are also in talks with some known and trusted 3rd party members of the forums to see if they are willing to perform an XCP escrow/purchase service for folks that don't want to or can't directly use counterpartyd to burn BTC. We will keep you all updated as this develops.

Or that.
2085  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: January 03, 2014, 08:38:32 PM

What I really like with proof of burn is that it puts absolutely everyone to the same level of opportunity.
Including the dev.
Congrats for not being one more greedy fast starter.
Your project success, you make money too. 'Good & honest motivation to work!
Thanks for showing exemple. Hope it will have the success it deserves.

It's too easy/unfair to create an IPO coin, sending huge amount of your money to yourself to get coins, that people get by sending you money... scam-smell 99.9%
Just watch Visacoin, Next, Mastercoin, Ripple...
I'm pretty sure for VSC at least 60% of the funds is from the dev to himself.
Almost certain it happened for NXT & MST too.
(uncomfort: your internal assets are thought to be created this way if no XCP-POB)

Proof of burn is the way to go. Almost scam-proof.
Point of a scam: making you lose money, making the scammer take/win your money
With POB, you can still lose your money, but the dev cannot take/win your money.
Therefore there is not real motivation to scam you.
(Obvious security reminder: be careful not having all your BTC in a single wallet.dat...)

The way XCP are created also seem to avoid suddent wish of purposedly bad wealth repartition...
Yeah, 'thinking Next. (announced ~1.5 month invest time, stopped after 2 weeks... BAD)
[DO NOT CHANGE THE TIME ALLOWED TO INVEST, under any pretext, 'trusting you on that]

This method is worthy of notice.  ++confidence.
One point not mentioned above, PoB, it is also a donation to the larger Bitcoin community in creating slightly more scarce bitcoin.

It hasn't made it to their language-neutral API toolset yet.

For them this is beta testing.  They are looking for comments, maybe assistance.

It looks like they added Kraken exchange today.

I don't want to jizz in my pants already, but what is this kitco? I'm not an american, obviously. Anyone care to explain?

i think it might be a canadian site, but its a gold selling site that hold one of the best and largest gold forums. also most of the charts people use to quote gold on the internet come from kitco. pretty sure it would be in the top 1000 sites.

the old kitco forum was legendary.

Edit: Kitco is the 940th most visited site in the USA.

Interesting that there wasn't much comment about it.  It just appeared with a little "New" marker on their site.
Bitcoin is becoming normal.

My metric for mainstream acceptance of Bitcoin was seeing it on one of the mainstream media ticker scrolls, like Bloomberg, along side their gold and silver price that they flash about once every two minutes.

This is a big step closer to that.

You have a second set of underwear?

For most online gold dealers, Kitco is their pricing source.  Based in Montreal Canada, major presence in New York and Hong Kong.
Kitco provide the easiest free pricing API that most precious metal dealers use and integrate worldwide.
That Kitco are now doing the same for Bitcoin is a game changer.  They are a very respected pricing source.  Their pricing may become more authoritative than say Coindesk's pricing, or of any particular exchange, as they use a weighted average.

Kitco's methods are rigorous, they have been doing this for many decades.  They are a leader in the precious metal's businesses and started with refining in the 70's, when gold first became legal again in US (if they were doing it before they they aren't saying).   They were online by 1995.  It makes sense that they are on the early part of the curve.  Most any English speaker who is serious about gold knows Kitco.

"Post China we are supporting $800."
I don't believe we can say that yet.

You are right, we aren't "post china".  We may never be.

2091  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Proof of same customer? on: January 03, 2014, 03:19:57 AM
I believe that FinCEN is ultimately interested in traceability. The transfer of bitcoins is completely traceable, but the transfer of bitcoin addresses (which is what Casascius coins facilitate) is not.

The KYC facility covers both functions; tracability as well as transfer to the direct customer.
It would be an interesting test case as to whether it could be shown that the buyer is the one receiving it but without the tracability.
by relying on the electronic signiture

2093  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Bitcoin Specie Project sponsored by the makers of New Liberty Dollar on: January 03, 2014, 02:56:53 AM

The next collectible series will be the 5th Anniversary of the Block Chain inception which will be available in January and will be the 2014.  We have not yet decided as to whether these will be hand numbered and gold plated, though this likely.  If there is significant interest, these may also be produced in solid gold.

Any orders made within the month of January 2014 may purchase these 5th anniversary commemorative handstamps.
We thank you for your continued support of the project.
2094  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Counterparty Protocol and Client (built on Bitcoin) - Official Thread on: January 03, 2014, 02:42:31 AM
Interesting project.
Are you able to tell us why did you decided to make these new accounts to announce this?
2095  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin legality across the globe on: January 03, 2014, 01:32:07 AM
Of all those governments, the US has custody of the most coins due to the Silk Road forfeiture.
2096  Economy / Economics / Re: Monthly average USD/bitcoin price & trend on: January 03, 2014, 12:11:40 AM
I'm so tired of the extrapolation argument (OMG, bitcoin will be worth 1000 trillion in 2017!!! Ha ha ha.).  YES, we all understand that bitcoin has a top and will slow down when it approaches that top (hence why it's called an S curve and not a J curve).

But the questions remain:

Where is the top?
How fast does it get there?

What happens when a denominator approaches zero?

The next LA Bitcoin meetup:

Bitcoin Discussion and Q&A with Andreas M. Antonopoulos

Amplify - 1600 Main St., Venice, CA

Andreas is not to be missed.  I feel like a bobblehead when he talks because I find myself nodding agreement through the whole thing.

But... That is the next SoCal Bitcoin meetup only if you don't count Monday Jan 6th in Hollywood:
