1441  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: New Legislation coming in Effect. USA on: September 15, 2014, 05:33:59 PM
This is valid only if you are doing business in new york state.

dont worry, it will spread out to other parts soon.

this is part of the regulations that are both needed and undesired by users.
on one hand it will make scams a bit more hard, but it will take a part of anonymity on the other

There is nothing in it to make a scam more difficult other than making business more difficult generally, it merely assures greater magnitude of any scams generated in NY.
Scammers are not so concerned.  Legitimate business is what will receive the compliance hardship.
The primary effect will be for existing Bitcoin business to no longer serve folks in New York.

It may generally be treated as humor when philosophers use the phrase "in reality" to describe a philosophy.
Moving on...
We've had a strong measure of BTC price stability for the last two weeks.  Consolidation.
1443  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: September 15, 2014, 05:22:54 PM
Oh Noes!  The block chain takes so many gigabytes now that it costs almost US$10 to store it on a thumb drive smaller than most the keys on your keychain.

Unfeasible!

They are living in the 20th century, or earlier methinks.
1444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: satoshin@gmx.com is compromised on: September 15, 2014, 12:13:48 PM
I believe that post when he stated "I am not Dorian" is from SN. From the logs of the emails that were posted, the hacker just received access right before he sent the email to theymos. So, I believe that earlier post is legit...

Perhaps the account was for sale ('on the darknet' as mentioned by the second, current hacker), The email could have been from the first hacker that sent the 'not Dorian' message, and subsequently access to the account bought by this new guy, who wants to make back his 25 BTC so he doesn't take a loss on the purchase of the account.

Keep in mind that he won't say how he hacked it but brags about everything else, quite possibly because he simply didn't.
1445  Economy / Speculation / Re: rpietila Wall Observer - the Quality TA Thread ;) on: September 15, 2014, 11:45:31 AM
I remain a little bit puzzled why you seem to want to continuously get your Monero book digs in - when in reality BTC is the ONLY "real" game in town.

Monero is the first alt (okay some said LTC a year ago..) that functions as a hedge to Bitcoin.

Same as Bitcoin is a hedge to paper assets.

Gold is a hedge to all.

This is very precious, to find an asset that has good positive EV and is a hedge. Everyone who has BTC does a pareto-improvement move by buying XMR, with 0.25%-5% of the holdings. This has nothing to do with taking a position, it is a slam dunk move if you invest professionally.

Monero is quite a bit more than merely a hedge though.
It holds a separate non-trivial innovation track that is not developed in Bitcoin.

in the u.s. your rights of privacy and anonymity are constituionally guaranteed.  it is likely that totalitarian regimes will outlaw anonymizing technologies, albeit with very limited success.  the likelihood of criminalization of anonymizing tech in western liberal democracies generally is zero.

By Law you must provide Identification any time it is demanded by authorities whether they are in the right to ask for it or not.

This is not accurate.  There are specific circumstances where ID must be provided or it entitles them to take some specific actions.
Authorities are always entitled to ask, but then so are you.
1447  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone following the ebola outbreak? on: September 13, 2014, 10:54:20 PM
The current ebola virus is mutating very rapidly, therefore some experts are worried that it will become airborne

I am not 100% sure, but as far as I know, a non-airborne virus will not mutate to airborne virus. There is not a single example in recorded history for something like this happening.

Meanwhile, there is good news from Senegal. So far, the disease seems to be limited to the first reported case. None of the others are infected. But at the same time, the news from WHO is that an unrelated Ebola epidemic is rapidly spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mutation is not necessary to weaponize the virus, aerosolizing it would create the threat of airborne distribution.
Mix an ebola patient, a drone and a single insane person and we have some serious problems.

Did that wall get eaten in one buy?
Look to the volume...
1449  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 13, 2014, 05:03:52 PM
BTC whales embracing Monero is a double edge sword, mark my words...
and why do you think so?
They will always return to their first love, especially in a rally - what do you think is happening now?

BTC are never enough - it is better to have an alt based on BTC haters.
Well that will distrubute the XMRs to other holders and prevent the price from skyrocketing too fast / too high. That is a good thing.
Sure but it may be done more violently than XMR can handle.

We will see, I try to help the project from the backstage (smooth can confirm)...

This presumes continued exponential rises in BTC.  Those may be happening in XMR instead from here forward.

XMR market cap is 1/1000 of BTC
XMR has a head start on doing things that BTC doesn't do.

If you think a BTC whale needs to finance its BTC purchases by selling XMR, think again.

I wonder when the email was compromised, and whether it could have been used to make the post on p2pfoundation.ning.com. (Edit: I was referring here to the Dorian Nakamoto post. After I posted this, there was another p2pfoundation.ning.com post.)

Do you think the "not Dorian" post was fake? If yes, the same hacker or a different hacker than now?

The question is open to everyone. Smiley

It was not from Satoshi.
It was from a different 'hacker'.
1451  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: satoshin@gmx.com is compromised on: September 12, 2014, 06:48:31 PM
not many people 10 or 20 years ago were talking as if there was a different option for "source" of money I would think.
Not many perhaps by percentage, but a lot more people than you are thinking about.  It was not rare.
1452  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: satoshin@gmx.com is compromised on: September 12, 2014, 01:16:10 PM
So what would be the impact of satoshi being revealed?
I understand there could be personal reprocussions for the man himself, and that there is a great human interest story here, but bitcoin will not be affected. The world may be disappointed when we find out satoshi is a programmer and leads a life typical of one (he's boring)

If we take any lesson from all the other times, the result would be that Bitcoin would become personified and every foible and human flaw would be deconstructed.
Each of these would be used to impute nefarious motivation and failings would be magnified.  The narrative would become the human interest story, the story of the chase, the pursuit, the capture, and all the merits of Bitcoin the work, would be brushed aside.

With the entire globe blanketed by fiat pumpty dumpter central banks, there aren't really safe places for him to stand.  Choosing anonymity was both very wise and supremely generous, it does more for Bitcoin than for Satoshi.
1453  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will bitcoin hit 252,000 USD? on: September 12, 2014, 05:24:20 AM
The question is, is is fair to compare USD to Zimbabwe when US still have the strongest military in the world.

Interesting question.
Does this military produce more revenue or more cost for the USD?

Wow! I like it - it's design is pretty cool!  Cheesy  WHere can I buy it?

Europe -- various locations.
U.S. -- California and Las Vegas.  Scroll back to previous posts in this thread for locations.

Apparently the ones you can buy in shops in Europe don't feature the bitcoin logo. Is that correct or not?

I bought the white barrel in Moscow.  It has the Bitcoin logo
All those I have bought so far have it.
1455  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: satoshin@gmx.com is compromised on: September 10, 2014, 12:47:39 AM
Even security experts make mistakes.

Then they aren`t really experts, no info will lead to the real satoshi period.

QFT

Having another LOL at that kids desktop.  The mixture of AIM and Cain is so telling...

the alleged hacker is a high school kid.

The problem with black hat people is they are usually misguided script kiddies who lack discipline.

Lastly, they are usually loudmouths who boast about committing crimes

+101

Good find.

I'm 99% sold on the chain of links that it's him.

But there is the 1% that thinks we might have another Dorian Nakamoto moment.

Worth hauling him in to teach him a lesson at the very minimum. He seems like a real piece of work. Could be doing him a favour and saving him from a life behind bars.

I am more concerned of the ramification of this child's actions.   For criminals and federal agents, it has led a nice warm path to the founders of the Bitcoin system and this implies the Bitcoin system is now vulnerable if the original founders are found.  Furthermore since there is billions and potentially trillions of dollars involved, I would surmise that the lives of the founders are now potentially in danger.

Very very doubtful.  More likely having a chuckle and a cup of tea.  No one is close to the real Satoshi, and there aren't any leads here to be had.
1457  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: satoshin@gmx.com is compromised on: September 09, 2014, 06:06:00 PM
The real satoshi should split his milion bitcoin between the bitcoin foundation , the btctalk and keep some for him before disappearing again , the "saotshi-dump" crypto fear will end then .And bitcoin could have a big push

+1

-1000
By leaving them dormant and never spent, they are a donation to EVERYONE that uses bitcoin.
Satoshi understands supply, demand, and decentralisation better than thou.
1458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: satoshin@gmx.com is compromised on: September 09, 2014, 06:01:54 PM
I doubt this will result in Satoshi being revealed, it's likely a core group of programmers.

However, it might be interesting to see a full record of his correspondence, assuming the image released isn't photoshopped.

You have to wonder only ~1000 emails surely over the course of Bitcoin the account would have received more messages.

LOL it takes zero activity to receive an email.
When burning an ID, you delete all the sent and received email, and let the account sit there, or delete it (but then someone can re-register it immediately)

The email address still exists, and can receive email from all the spammers, journos, and supporters.  These are never seen, never opened.  You just walk away after severing all the ties.

More plausible:  He thought we would be smarter by now than the community apparently manifests as being.
All this hullabaloo to advertise the scammer?  Let it die.
1459  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: satoshin@gmx.com is compromised on: September 08, 2014, 11:43:56 PM
Any chance this is all FUD because of all the good news today for Bitcoin!

Apple striking back ?

I think it's a hacker who owns a large amount of Bitcoin himself and doesn't wish to actually hurt bitcoin, as he could of done truly worse things...like pretend that satoshi was going to sell off his bitcoins which would cause a immense price drop.

If he does own a lot he could also have pretended to be Satoshi and released a message that destroyed the private keys to 99% of his mined Bitcoin. Instantly the price would have spiked up quite violently.
How exactly does one release a message that proves the destruction of ones private key?
Huh

Wonder if that private key is contained in there ... that could be epic

U may be dead sure that the Pvt key is not there. The new "Satoshi" has asked for coins from theymos and then gone rampant to vandalize Sourceforge repo out of frustration. He's trying to take down the price as much as possible and buy as much as possible. Rise and Rise of Bitcoin is going to release by the end of this year and we'll see a price rally after that. So everyone, get as much coins as possible in your pocket when it is cheap. Smiley

Not a bad idea.  Buy up before this "hacker" does (using the term loosely).  Any cheap buys you get deprive him of some.  The sheeple and gullible will sell into this.

This is big news

No, its rather the opposite.
