2801  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: National Police of Ukraine takes down cyber crime group on: September 02, 2022, 06:31:44 AM
Well, I think the cryptocurrency issue here is not as important as that they are scammers, who could have scammed even if there were no cryptocurrencies involved.

Quote
Investigators of the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine together with the SBU blocked a criminal scheme of misappropriation of funds of citizens of Ukraine and European Union countries under the guise of exchange trading in cryptocurrency, securities, gold and oil.

Another thing is that some media like to emphasize cryptocurrencies when there is a scam in the same way that when someone drinks a whole bottle of whiskey and takes two puffs of a joint, if he has a traffic accident or commits a crime, they emphasize the fact that he had consumed marijuana and the fact that he drank a whole bottle of whiskey does not appear in the headline.
2802  Economy / Economics / Re: Germans are looking to firewood for energy as natural gas prices soar on: September 02, 2022, 06:25:13 AM
Oak firewood has a big minus. Oak takes a very long time to dry.

All you have to do is wait for it to dry.

And as a rule, firewood is sold immediately after the tree has been cut down.

That will be where you live.

Therefore, you will have problems lighting the stove, or you will have to chop wood into smaller chips and use lighter fluids.

No because I never put wood that is not dry in the fireplace.

Pine, birch, aspen dries very quickly.

Pine and aspen are garbage for fireplaces the first for being resinous and the second for being soft.

I have a curiosity. Theymos has at some point ceased to be in DT1 to be in DT2? I have looked at some pages but I don't see if this is possible or if this has ever been the case. Obviously I haven't read all 136 pages of the thread. I just remember him always in DT1 without being removed, and I don't know if this is the case.

...

I doubt if that is legal, although I assume they will have been legally advised to write their TOS. But just because there is a clause in the TOS and you accept it doesn't automatically make it legally valid. They could also put that you have to give them a kidney if they feel like it and that would be null and void.

No, it's legal, termination of a contract without reason is not an "unfair" contract as long as it gives the other party the same chance of doing so.
Basically, a bank or a merchant or any kind of provider as long as it offers you the opportunity to cancel your contract with them at any given time without previous notice can demand the same from you. There is absolutely no law in Europe where somebody is forced to serve you when it comes to financial services, the only exception is that every EU citizen must be able to open a single bank account in the EU, and that's it.

That is clear. I was referring to what is in bold. To cancel the contract, fine. But the fact that they don't give you explanations for it has a component of abitrariety that is what makes me doubt.
2805  Economy / Speculation / Re: why does BTC price appear to follow the performance of US equities markets? on: September 01, 2022, 06:09:29 AM
BTC mostly follows the movements of tech stocks simply because the markets sees BTC as a risk-on asset(like most tech stocks), despite BTC fundamentally being a risk-off asset(or at least it should on paper, or at least it was designed to be). It will take time for BTC to "decouple"; when and if people finally see it's value and importance.

I agree with this analysis but only for the short term. There are long term events where the correlation breaks down. For example the halvings.

It is normal that in the short term, as there are many investors investing in Bitcoin and other assets, there is some correlation. Besides that there are macroeconomic events that influence both, such as monetary policy of central banks.

But in the long term there has been and is likely to continue to be a decoupling, favorable for Bitcoin.
2806  Economy / Economics / Re: Germans are looking to firewood for energy as natural gas prices soar on: September 01, 2022, 06:03:29 AM
Nobody uses oak or walnuts for heating, and msot have changed to pellet usage for their homes, and those are made out of willow and fake acacia trees, they grow damn fast, are easy to be cut and processed, and require the least energy, mix it wid leftovers from other wood industries and they are pretty effective.

Nobody will use that wood in Germany which if I remember correctly is where you live, or wherever you live. But I please don't deny what I can see with my own eyes.

Also, are you talking about using that wood for small metal stoves or the large stone fireplaces that are built in houses?

For the latter, oak and walnut wood are ideal:

Oak firewood is absolutely one of the best types of firewood you can burn.
2807  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can this be the reason some people are afraid to invest in Bitcon? on: September 01, 2022, 05:50:54 AM
I am also a victim.

The sooner you get rid of that garbage victim mentality the better. That mentality is promoted a lot by socialist-leaning politicians offering you the supposed solution that they are going to save you. Garbage. You have to take charge of your own destiny.

As for Bitcoin, apply this. If you haven't started investing, start now, but first get a lot of information about what it is and decide why you want to invest. If you do not have much experience it is better to invest for the long term, at least 4 or 5 years and do DCA, which means that you buy as much as you can weekly or monthly. How much can you afford? $50 a month? Then go for it.

2808  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New to it. on: September 01, 2022, 04:57:24 AM
Yeah, well. The answers you have been given above are very helpful, and I hope you will read all the links that have been passed on to you.

I would go the other way. What I would recommend is that you start by looking for information yourself, and don't expect it to be served to you on a platter. It will serve you much better in the long run. Then, if you read information on your own and have questions, ask. We will be happy to help you.
2809  Economy / Economics / Re: Germans are looking to firewood for energy as natural gas prices soar on: August 31, 2022, 05:57:54 AM
I don't see the point of looking for firewood unless they mean going to look for firewood themselves, not buying it, because firewood is expensive. Very expensive. And the ideal firewood for fireplaces, such as oak or walnut, is the most expensive.

Is it allowed in Germany to go to the forest and cut firewood? With so many environmental regulations, I wouldn't be surprised if it was forbidden or you had to ask for permission and pay a fee.

Bamboo trees are a very good source of heat considering their short maturity period, less toxic nature, and ability to dry fast. But it doesn't have the ability to retain heat for a long time. One needs to have plenty of it to heat a house for a very long time which might increase the amount of fume and ashes produced.

That's what I thought. I hadn't heard of bamboo as firewood, but being a thin shrub that grows fast, it's not likely to last long.
2810  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: How to report the fraud company Localbitcoins.com? on: August 31, 2022, 05:48:35 AM
Hi,

Many years ago i deposit some bitcoins in my localbitcoin.com account. i waited till the price raised and login to try to sell my btc. I never made any trade and when i tried to opened a trade there was an error message: you are on forced holiday.
I contacted the support ...

There is one thing I am not clear about. How long ago did this happen? It's like you're talking about last year, when we were in the bull market.

Which is the shittiest I have ever read for today. This mean they can just randomly suspend any account without telling you the reasons why they were suspended because of this TOS.

I doubt if that is legal, although I assume they will have been legally advised to write their TOS. But just because there is a clause in the TOS and you accept it doesn't automatically make it legally valid. 2811  Other / Meta / Re: Ban Appeal For naim027. on: August 31, 2022, 05:43:47 AM
Op bumping this thread to get attention of the admin as still no admin responded here and I think same happened on pm too. I can understand it as I have not got any response while I got banned. I think as op is the asset of the forum especially for the Bengali community admin should give a chance to op.

They don't usually say anything in these threads. Most likely scenario is that at some point in the future, a moderator will say that he has been unbanned. At least that's how I remember it was in the case of Pokapoka124 and some others.

2812  Other / Meta / Re: What type of posts attract merit? on: August 31, 2022, 04:53:32 AM
I see people getting several merits but as a newbie, I wouldn't want to be a nuisance to the forum by spamming. In that case I would really need the advice of old members here to know the kind of posts that will earn me merits.

Apart from what you have been told, there are times when you can earn merit simply by asking a relevant question, or by making a funny comment. But be careful with overdoing this because what you can get is the opposite result: merit sources and higher ranked merit will put you on their ignore list.

I see you have already earned 3 merits. Just use the forum to learn and exchange information and little by little you will become a better poster and get more merits.
2813  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How will you handle this case on: August 31, 2022, 04:39:44 AM
I don't usually believe stories like this, but I have no reason to disbelieve it either. I just can't verify if what is said is true.

Assuming it is true, the crypto issue doesn't strike me as much, if the scammed brother could have taught himself how to make a wallet. What strikes me is that a brother scams another brother out of $100. I guess the swindling brother knew that the swindled brother was not going to break a bottle over his head when he realized the theft.

That's a good way to lose a relationship with a sibling. For $100. And if I were the OP I would also stop talking to the scamming brother.

2814  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Roobet Scammed me for $2,000+ on: August 30, 2022, 11:04:23 AM
All these incidents would be greatly reduced if KYC was implemented before letting you bet the first satoshi. Although this would also have its drawbacks, as I believe that at the beginning at least there would be a drop in business. But the trend is to more and more KYC, so I would not be surprised if in the future the KYC for virtually all crypto casinos would be of the same style as the one used by Pokerstars.
2815  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: coin mixer service on: August 30, 2022, 10:28:07 AM
After tornado.cash been seized, do you guys still looking for a similar/same service vendor?

I wonder if I may open this service but not sure of any potential risk there, anyone could advise?

About mixer for Ethereum I can't tell you anything, for Bitcoin, the one with the best reputation in this forum is the one you see in the signature of NeuroticFish and many others, Chip Mixer.

There has been a whole debate about the potential risks. Generally, the people who wear the signature will tell you that it is safe to use the mixer, although you should take precautions. Someone else argued that using mixers puts you in the crosshairs of the authorities.
2816  Economy / Economics / Re: Argentina's Mendoza province now accepting crypto for taxes and fees on: August 30, 2022, 10:23:16 AM
it will only accept stablecoins such as Tether (USDT) for tax payments.
That's disappointing. I would barely call centralized tokens a cryptocurrency, and it's even worse if they rely on a centralized blockchain. As a government, that makes them rely on several foreign corporations.

Did you expect much more from the government of Argentina? When I saw the thread title I didn't know if it was a joke or what. Now I understand it. They modernize but with what they can control. Just like central banks modernize but taking out their CBDCs. They are not going to shoot themselves in the foot.
2817  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: CME launches Bitcoin Euro Denominated futures on: August 30, 2022, 06:58:59 AM
Well, referencing it to a currency that does not stop falling is not clear to me. For people in the Eurozone who have investments in dollars, as many investment funds do, these investments have helped them to compensate for the decline in purchasing power.

I do not quite understand the move, I guess they do it to diversify supply, or because they expect the euro to continue to fall further against major competing currencies, and thus the price of Bitcoin and Eth will be higher.
2818  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Quarterly estimated taxes For Bitcoin in the US on: August 30, 2022, 05:31:17 AM
Are you worried about how you will have to declare that $2 of profit?

In this case, obviously, it is not going to be worth your while to pay a tax advisor.

See if someone who knows how it works in the US can help you.

As far as I know, in most countries in the world, if they don't have an IRS or equivalent body that is inquisitorial, nothing will happen if you don't declare that $2.

Another thing would be that the legislation counts as capital gains every trade in which you make money, but does not deduct the losses, so that, despite earning $2 net, you would probably owe hundreds of dollars at least to the IRS. But it sounds to me that in the USA they are not so imbecilic as to count it that way.
2819  Economy / Economics / Re: Global inflation rate from 2017 to 2027(compared to previous year) on: August 29, 2022, 10:29:59 AM
In order to preserve the value of your money, it is good to look into assets, like bitcoin, gold and other valuable assets that people demand more for which increases their value over time, unlike government printed money (fiat).

Sure.

As we are in this forum, it is normal to talk about Bitcoin, about hedging against inflation with Bitcoin, and, in fact, since its inception, Bitcoin has been the best way to hedge against it, which we cannot be 100% sure will continue to be the case in the future. So, it is not bad to diversify with other assets as well.

About the projections being made, we cannot be sure, as I would be surprised if someone had predicted this year's inflation. What we do know is how to protect ourselves from inflation, and we have to act on that.
2820  Economy / Economics / Re: Removal of $100 bills from circulation on: August 29, 2022, 10:25:07 AM
This will never work, because:

1. $100 bills are not too big for the average Joe

On this I agree, and as time goes by and inflation has a compound interest rate, the purchasing power of the $100 bills is less.

2. Most citizens are too tech-illiterate to use CDBCs as an app. I mean, the only practical integration method for this is to replace banks' in-house traditional systems with a CDBC blockchain. It won't make a difference to the customer, they'll still get a card.

Here I do not agree. The day will come when everyone will use it. I also thought that I would not see people over 80 years old sending Whatsaps, reading the newspaper or using the bank with the mobile and I already know several cases.
