301  Other / Meta / Re: QR Code Forum Avatars? on: February 03, 2023, 07:22:19 PM
I also use FOSS applications that show me where the QR code leads whenever I'm in the outside, but having to scan a QR code that's being presented to me in my monitor just doesn't entice me in any way (that I can see at the moment). Whenever I see QR codes I instantly remind me of these episodes[1][2][3] that were rampant some time ago and would pose more as another potential of scam to unaware and uninformed users ...
Right, however do realise we're probably outliers in that line of thinking. Most users would be intrigued, and that's why they would work for advertising, and well do work for advertising. I hate the things, I hate that when you go out to a restaurant they have these things for the menus, so you have to scan them. Hence, why I have the FOSS QR code scanner on my phone, because if you think about it anyone can slap a sticker down on a table, and that's a potential security risk.

Same goes with the forum, I wouldn't be keen on it. As avatars though, I guess there's nothing really stopping users from doing it, only when they start putting it in posts does it become a problem. Obviously, if the users are using QR code avatars to redirect to malicious sites etc, that would be bannable. However, nothing is really stopping them from using them to advertise legitimate services, just like any other avatar then.
302  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Ranking-up pipeline- Those close to their next rank (lacking Merits) on: February 03, 2023, 07:17:48 PM
Jesus, those numbers seem so low, don't they?  Considering how many active members there are on the forum, only a small fraction of them are close to their next rank--it's probably been that way for a long time, but I guess I haven't looked at this data in a long time.  Yeesh.  DdmrDdmr, you're the man for keeping this thread updated.
Considering in the last seven days there's only been unique posts from around 5000 users, I don't think those numbers are half bad. What are we looking at? 526 accounts due to rank up, and around 5000 users actively posting in the last week. That's about 10%, give or take as I'm basing that on loose numbers rather that exact values. Usually, for most things there's a 10% rule. I'd say that's as expected, and as time goes on you'd expect user to take longer to rank up, due to the amount required compared to the lower ranks. So, most users will probably be between Hero, and Legendary or a decent amount of time.

What could be alarming is the amount of lower ranked accounts not being near ranking up, I suppose. Although, unfortunately we've seen a decline in activity for a long period of time now.
303  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 03, 2023, 07:07:30 PM
Be care tho.  Now I feel like I should've waited for the weigh ins and the face offs.  Lol.  There are some pie shtters up there now that I think about it.  Jung is a risk, JY Park, Kim and prolly Kinoshita too.
I'm probably going to put a small amount on a bet, but it'll be different to the actual predictions I put. Here's what I'm thinking:

Derrick Lewis by TKO/KO
Mandy Bohm by decision
Denis Tiuliulin
Tatsuro Taira

Now, that isn't the best odds, but I think those are the only one's that offer value, and at the same time don't worry me massively. As you can see, I've actually gone against some of my predictions, and gone for the massive underdog in Mandy Bohm. I wouldn't follow this bet, as it's definitely on the risky side, but that's what I'm going to put a small amount on. I haven't seen the weigh ins yet either.

What would your favourites be? I might incorporate a rather long accumulator with the Bellator guys on tonight.
304  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: February 03, 2023, 03:00:29 PM
I see no problem in checking if the wallet has any coins. I would have checked. If it was empty, I wouldn't bother trying to find who it belongs to. And hopefully, the real owner wouldn't deposit any bitcoins on it without realizing it is gone. If it was funded, then I would try to find the owner in a few different ways.
Yeah, I know a lot of users would be comfortable with that, and I'm not saying it's wrong for them to do that. I just personally wouldn't be comfortable doing that. It's almost sticking my noses into someone else's business, without having any sort of right to do so. It's hard because if you find it on a beach or a secluded area, you basically have no one to contact or give it too, and like I said even the act of giving it to someone could potentially compromise it. That's why I like the moral dilemma, it's very similar to the train track dilemma, basically whatever you do or don't do has some sort of consequence.

If it was at an event, you'd normally just give it to the event organisers, but you're kind of relying on them to be trustworthy themselves, which you can't always do. Handing it to the Police is probably your best bet, but I know a lot of users would be uncomfortable with that also.
305  Other / Meta / Re: QR Code Forum Avatars? on: February 03, 2023, 02:49:21 PM
I wouldn't personally scan QR codes, for the same reasons as Loyce. As for the forum rules, there's no real specific mentjon of QR codes, but they'd likely conflict with the advertisement rule. So, unless you've got a rather substantial thread/post then they'd probably conflict.

It doesn't make sense to use QR codes on a website: if I see it on my screen, I can just as well click a link.
You're right. However, there's a sense of intrigue with QR codes, and part of their danger. You don't necessarily by looking at it know where it goes, and since people are intrigued by the sense of mystery, will be more inclined to scan it. It's why I think QR codes are effective advertisements, and you often see random QR codes stuck on things, without any explanation.

Now, you're absolutely right that any sensible person shouldn't really be scanning these willy nilly. I've got an application on my phone from F-Droid which allows you to scan QR codes, and then it presents the link without taking you there.

306  Other / Meta / Re: Good move or nah? on: February 03, 2023, 02:45:31 PM
Nah, not a good move.

First of all, we couldn't enforce that without having some kind of privacy evasive KYC, and I'm not even sure the benefits of it. It's down to the parents of the child to monitor or restrict what they're using the internet for. Plus, I think a teenager would likely be more interested in other social media that talks about Bitcoin, than Bitcointalk. The only real pull here would be those that enjoy in depth discussion, but also signature campaigns. Which, both require some effort, and therefore isn't a big deal if they're on the forum for either of those. We want discussion, I don't want to see people getting excluded despite being of good quality.
307  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers on: February 03, 2023, 02:42:31 PM
In general, as I said, there are a lot of options where and how to hide seed phrase. It all depends on having the right tools and creative ideas.
That's true, but we don't have to be all that creative. Who's going to scan your walls with a metal detector? Even, if they did, and it went off it could be pipes or anything really. There's a ton of metal in my walls. Plus, no one's really going to think of that unless you're a really high target, but most of us aren't targets to that. So, while I like the discussion about creative ideas, I think we should probably keep it to realistic threat levels.

Plus, I'm not convinced by door hinges. I've seen some very poor quality hinges which rust like crazy when exposed to moisture. So, I'd preferably go for something that's resistant to corrosion.
308  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Boxing] Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury - February 26 in Saudi Arabia on: February 03, 2023, 02:37:56 PM
I still don't get why people claim Jake Paul is fighting nobodies, of  course he is he's new to the sport. Name me any other boxer that started fighting the top fighters at the start of their career? Usually, boxers pad their record by fighting nobodies. That's part of the business to build up the hype. However, you've got to give credit where it's due, Jake Paul is fighting people way above the normal level at this stage in his career. Tommy might not be the most experienced or even the best of boxers, but he's got a name attached to him which if Jake Paul beats him, will propel Jake's career forward by quite some margin.

There's no stopping this fight anymore it's already a done deal unless one of them got injured, this fight is a big leap for Jake or he will be exposed as someone who is picking his opponent, if Jake Paul wins the boxing community will change the way they look on Jake Paul, he's been despised for facing old and worn and has been MMA's because Tommy is on another level but I still pick Jake Paul to win, because he can knock out people even if those he fought are old and fighters whose career are already fading.
It's not a done deal until both of them step inside the ring, and that bell goes. There's been numerous times that a fight has been called off due to medical issues, including a few times actually inside the cage in MMA when entering it. So, I wouldn't count your chickens yet. Anything can happen, and they'll be training leading up to it, and training is usually where you get your injuries.
309  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: February 03, 2023, 02:31:44 PM
Remember to get your predictions in before Chelsea vs Fulham tonight at 8PM GMT. I've gone for a Fulham victory in the end. Even though, Fulham haven't been the best since being promoted, I fancy them here. Chelsea are playing at home though which could impact things. Liverpool have Wolves again tomorrow, I'm not expecting too much from that. Arsenal should be able to secure a win against Everton. Unless, they begin to slip up from here on out.

Also, Liverpool picking up even more injuries. What a bloody season, it seems we can't catch a break, and we just continue to pick up injuries. Konate is out for at least two weeks, and he's probably been our best player recently. Plus, I know from previous announcements it'll probably be a lot longer than the quoted two weeks. We usually give that number as a baseline it seems.
310  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 03, 2023, 02:24:29 PM
Not the best in terms of names on this event, but I've attempted some predictions. I'll probably going to give betting a miss on this card. Too many variables, and unknowns. Here's my predictions:

Derrick Lewis
Da Un Jung
Marcin Tybura
Kyle Nelson
Yusaku Kinoshita
Anshul Jubli
Zha Yi
Rinya Nakamura
Hyun Sung Park
Ji Yeon Kim
Jun Yong Park
Tatsuro Taira

Not a lot of tape on some of these guys, so take these predictions with a pinch of salt. I haven't really got a whole lot of favourites either. Derrick Lewis, and Tybura I'd probably be the most confident on.
311  Other / Meta / Re: [Results 2022] Bitcointalk Community Awards 🏆 on: February 02, 2023, 09:25:08 PM
Let's see some more competition for the spambuster next year Wink. Congratulations to everyone that was a nominee of course.

This is a very nice idea, as I think local boards are the core of this forum.

Of course, it would be very difficult to have meaningful voting, as every local board is a different island, and of course, we want to prevent the local hero merit source from winning the competition.

Could easily be done with the permission of Icopress & co to elect certain prominent users of the local sections. There will be less work to do since there won't be as many users voting, and at least you'll get more tightly knitted users voting for their stand out users each year. Plus, you could potentially narrow down some of the categories to make it better fit. That way, they could vote on their local community awards, and the main one without too many issues. Otherwise, some users who predominately post within their local section will never have a chance, despite potentially being a great candidate for a vote.
312  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 02, 2023, 09:18:11 PM
Anyway here's my lottery ticket.

Jung - Kinoshita - Taira at 2.01
Add:  JY Park - Kim - Tybura at 6.50
Add:  Choi - Nakamura - H Park at 17.73
Add:  Lee - Jubli at 45.02
Add:  Lewis at 126.05

Just 10 bucks total for the lulz.
Mines probably going to be something similar. Still need to watch a little more tape. I keep boomeranging between Lewis, and Spivak. I promise to have my predictions out by tomorrow Tongue. By the way, I'm not reviewing tape on Lewis or Spivak, I just can't really choose. I'm trying to not take into consideration the weight change, but Lewis has had a rather rough time recently in the cage, and Spivak might play it safe, go for volume, and look to tire Lewis. I also think Lewis will be a little more timid than usual, due to being knocked out a few times now.
313  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: February 02, 2023, 11:48:07 AM
What a terrible season for Liverpool. Can't seem to sell the club, so we're stuck with owners that don't want us, we've had one of our worst seasons in recent memory, definitely our worst under Klopp. We've just had the chance to mitigate some of our problems by making a few signings, and we basically didn't do anything. Especially, to that midfield that needed reinforcement. Looks like we've accepted our fate this season. I guess we must be holding out for some big moves in the summer, right?

I'm going for a Fulham win, Arsenal win, Aston Villa win, and Brentford win this weekend. Liverpool have Wolves, so we'll probably lose against then, let's be honest. We haven't had the best of luck with them recently.
314  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 02, 2023, 11:44:29 AM
I knew it was going to be a sponsor of sorts, there was no way that a commission would sanction a fight for Logan Paul. He hasn't trained in martial arts at all. It'd be a really bad look on the UFC too. It seems Monster Energy has kept their sponsor too? Prime is going to be in the corners. When I thought there couldn't be any more sponsors...I'm lucky with BT sport you can watch the fights relatively undisturbed, but I've watched it a few times with friends on ESPN, and the screen is covered in advertisements, and you can't even watch the walk outs as they're playing advertisements.

Anyhow, see what I mean about Derrick Lewis? Definitely dropped more than 5 pounds there, but that doesn't mean he's not going to turn up at the fight with that weight back on. It might just be part of his training, so that he finds it easier come weigh in day.
315  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 02, 2023, 12:02:05 AM
I don't understand why Lewis is so big underdog in this fight, but it could be related with his weight cut and the fact that he lost last few fights.
There is value betting on Lewis but I am not sure we are going to see his old power for KO he needs to win fights.
Spivac is not my favorite fighter but I see this event more as 50-50 than current odds bookmakers set, and I think this fight won't go to distance.
It's absolutely because Lewis has lost his last few fights, and some of them were pretty convincingly. Tai knocking him out via an elbow, that I think pretty much no one expected. I like Tai, and I wasn't expecting him to be able to do that. I'm the type of better that likes to bet on heavyweights going the distance, because usually the odds are quite nice. Sometimes, you get something silly like 5.00 for the favourite winning a decision, and that's only for a three round fight. Having said that, I stay away from decision wins on five round fights usually, at least with heavyweights. Although, Gane, and Jones are in pretty damn good shape for the division, and usually don't look all that gassed. Except, maybe Gane against Ngannou, but most other heavyweights start to flag towards the end. I know Lewis has struggled with it in the past, and it's not like he's a volume puncher.
316  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 01, 2023, 12:38:31 PM
Look forward to seeing Prime replace Monster Energy for being held up at the decisions...Anyway, let's get some predictions out within the next few days. Missing one weekend of UFC has made us all stir crazy, and we're more interested talking about a sponsorship than the actual bets you guys are putting on.

I'm probably not going to bet this weekend, but I'll get my predictions out soon. As I said earlier, I believe Lewis will get the knockout after all. I've never been a massive fan of Spivak, and feel he's over rated to be honest.

Now to Prime - they have already updated their page (https://drinkprime.com/) with UFC official sponsor Cool. Anyone tasted it? Funny that everything is sold out. Is it that good or due to promotion? We dont have it at my place, so I've checked walmart prices, and it turns that it cost more than Monster Energy and Red Bull.
Nah, not interested in it. However, I know it's extremely popular with the kids these days, and it's extremely expensive. It's just because of the association with Logan Paul, and KSI. There's nothing special about the drink. I believe it's just a normal electrolyte drink, so not necessarily a energy drink like Red Bull, and Monster Energy.
317  Other / Meta / Re: Hypothetical Btalk Forum App Version/ Social Media features? on: February 01, 2023, 12:32:08 PM
I personally wouldn't use the application, but I understand that a lot of users login with their phones, and the SMF software isn't exactly the most user friendly when it comes to mobiles. Probably, because it was around before most users converted to mobiles.

Or we could just host source code and .apk files on github, that is if app would be open source.
Than we could add it to alternative platforms that host only open source android apps, like Fdroid, NeoStore, IzzyOnDroid, etc.
It would be a different story if app would be released as closed source.
Much simpler solution is mobile friendly responsive design for forum website.
Those work. The only issue it seems in terms of distributing it would be IOS, since they have tighter restrictions. As long as there's a way of verifying it rather than just blindly installing it from the app stores. I'm familiar with Fdroid, so know how the process is with that.
318  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: January 31, 2023, 07:22:08 PM
Well, that is Dana White saying yes, maybe this is real but there are no further announcements, and if there is no post on the real thing I am keeping on doubting it, and if he wants Paddy Pimblett I think he needs to drop his weight 1st because Logan Paul is 205 lb if I am not mistaken, so Logan Paul is a Light Heavyweight while Paddy Pimblett is Lightweight 155 lb Logan Paul is enormous and needs to lose weight 1st before challenging Pimblett, I think Logan Paul should start with some test run 1st,

I haven't watched the video, but I've seen a picture with Logan Paul having his thumbs up just in front of Dana White. It's probably a deal with Prime, which is a drink that Logan Paul, and KSI is partnered in I believe. So, that could potentially be a sponsorship deal. You know, how Monster the energy drink is currently the sponsor, and is held every time they read out the results of the fight. This will probably be the extent of it. Like I said, I can't imagine any commission sanctioning Logan Paul to fight in the UFC.
319  Other / Off-topic / Re: My story and where it is now..... on: January 31, 2023, 06:48:49 PM
Medicine is complex. So, while further investigation is likely needed, and the right sort of questions answered, but doctors make decisions on the data they're presented. Now, the body can act in weird ways, I've personally experienced such things, which led down an investigation which basically wasn't the cause. I don't blame the doctors at all for this, and I'm just glad to hear yahoo62278 is back home. Staying in hospital gets to you after a week or so, especially when you aren't quite sure what's going on.

yahoo62278, please do follow up on the questions, and further investigation though. You need to know the rationale of their decisions, and you'll probably have to accept that mistakes were made. As long as you're okay, I think that's fine. They at least took it seriously, instead of pushing it to the side, and not taking it seriously.

I don't know sure what this means for the overall cost, as I'm used to the NHS so it's easier to forgive when they make mistakes. Hopefully, insurance, and them owning up to it won't put you out of pocket too much. It's a little confusing the whole story here, so I imagine you could clear it up when you've got back to normal. I imagine, you haven't fully digested the information yet, considering the confusion.

Thanks for the updates though, often we forget that we're a tightly knitted community, and that users like yourself have had a massive impact on several users in the community. So, while it might seem odd relative strangers giving you kind words, that's the reason why.
320  Other / Meta / Re: Hypothetical Btalk Forum App Version/ Social Media features? on: January 31, 2023, 06:29:44 PM
I fell pretty confident in saying that a simple mobile app for this website would likely be rejected anyway.
If the forum wanted to make an official application for the forum, which I do doubt as it has been disucssed several times now. However, Epochtalk did have a focus on being mobile friendly I believe. Anyway, back to the point; we could distribute the .apk here on the forum along with a way of verifying the download, which in my opinion is infinitely better than hosting it via a third party site like Google Play. However, I'm not sure if this would be possible with Apple devices? I'm not too familiar with them as I tend to avoid them like the plague, can you sideload applications without their store?
