Hey Wiser, might I remind you that over 95% of the content on https://dnotesedu.com is and has historically been written by women. It is a great first step in getting a basic understanding of cryptocurrency. Don't think we have forgotten all the great material you wrote for the DNotesEDU app in 2015, you made a great contribution in the evolution of this industry!

Thank you very much! I didn't think you'd forgotten, and it was a fun project Smiley

Great discussion. I can objectively say that both you and Chase have made significant contributions to our industry and to DNotes. We are most grateful for that.

Our industry is more than just a little different. It is uniquely challenging, confusing, and intimidating at times. It takes time but it will eventually take its course to settle down in a more normal state.

DNotes is committed to be an inclusive digital currency as we drive toward mass adoption. It makes sense for us to have founded CryptoMoms to encourage and assist women to participate in the crypto currency space. We are still firmly committed to the cause as mass adoption of digital currency will not be achievable without the full participation of women.

However, I believe that the remaking of CryptoMoms later this year should seek to expand our core mission to be more expansive and inclusive of others who could benefit from this technology revolution. We welcome any ideas you may have.

I hear you about the industry being uniquely challenging, confusing, and intimidating at times. For the record, I want to say that I took to it like a duck to water (or like DNotes to a block chain). I have bumped into a few rude replies to questions I've posed, and been burned by a few scams (like who hasn't?) but overall, my experience has been positive. I have never felt that I was discriminated against or anything like that. I think the main thing I've encountered that I would change is that our industry seems very heavy on the speculation/pump and dump scene, and those things seem to be overrepresented in the media, and well, that's just not me. I'd really like to make more people aware of the other aspects of our industry, like the amazing creativity and innovation, how easy it is to trade your skills for just about any crypto you want, the fun and interesting and talented people I've met along the way, and the overall excitement of being part of something cutting edge. I really believe the industry is very open to everyone, but because of certain things being overrepresented in the media, a lot of people who might otherwise try it out might decide it's not for them because the stuff the media talks about isn't interesting to them.

My hope is to get to replacing all my receiver files over the weekend. I haven't done it yet, but I know it's important.

The coinscontrol admin just sent an update to let me know that their upgrades are complete
devcoin will be listed on coinscontrol next week

That is awesome news! Thanks for the update. I look forward to trading DVC again.

Chase, you raise some really good points. Honestly, you bring up the beef I've had with feminism and the way women's advancement has been handled in general in recent times. I'm really not trying to be political. What I see is that women are warmly invited to get involved in the "men's world" in terms of work opportunities and ways to get recognition and so forth, but first they have to essentially become men. So, in the cryptocurrency industry that means among other things geeking out about the technology.

I personally have no issues with getting involved in male dominated fields (I'm here, right?). I also work for the Catholic Church which a lot of outsiders think of as male dominated (though it's really more nuanced than that). But wherever I place myself and contribute, I'm going to do it as a woman, because that is who I am. More fundamentally, I'm going to do it as me. That is more important to me than recognition.

So, it's possible that a big reason we women really don't care for the recognition afforded in the cryptocurrency industry is that we feel it comes at a price, one we're simply not willing to pay.

I think I'm pretty typical in the sense that I really don't have much of a motivation to get into the nuts and bolts of the technology itself. I will learn what I need to know to do what I want to do. But I recently hit a point where I had greater technology needs, and I needed expertise. Rather than study it myself, I reached out to a good friend of mine who is into all this stuff and we worked out a deal where he handles my high technology for me (running my DMD masternode, for example), and I pay him. And it works great. It frees me up to do the things I'd rather be doing, and he gets to geek out and have fun, and make some money. In other words, it plays to both our strengths and inclinations.

I remember back when Paycoin was a thing, the founder Josh Garza said that his wife had told him that she wasn't going to mess with it unless it was easier to use than her credit card, and that's always stuck with me (even though Paycoin sadly went the way of many dead cryptos). There have been times when I've had some issue with a wallet and reached out for help, and was given a list of steps to do in order to get it working again. And I'd think: OK, I can do this list of steps, but how many people really are going to go through that trouble just to get to their money? Mass adoption of any crypto won't happen until wallets just work and no one needs to think about them. I think women are generally quicker to understand this than men, though there are certainly exceptions.
485  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: DNotes 2.0 - Bridging the Gap Between the Centralized and Decentralized World on: March 09, 2018, 05:46:24 AM
Here's an interesting article about how women are often overlooked in our industry. I post it here because of the DNotes commitment to actively reach out to women. Written by a man, it's a bit of an apology piece and quite touching.

He does, however, miss one very important point. Maybe we're not at big events because we don't want to be. Maybe we don't find external recognition to be particularly important. Maybe we're busy being women and plain don't have time. I don't want to tell you how many writing assignments and trades I've done during odd moments when I had a break from tending to children, or how many times I sat down to work on a project knowing I'd better write fast so I could get it done before baby woke up from a nap.

Part of the nature of this industry, the fact that it's all Internet based which means you can do it anytime, anywhere, means that fame or recognition is honestly not as important to success as it is in some other industries.

Not that recognition is bad or anything. I'm just saying that we women are rather practical, and the industry lends itself to recognition being a nice bonus, but not vital, and... maybe we like it that way.

Wallets are down on most exchanges. Chinese exchange Huobi managed to push deposits through. There was an immediate dump, but market absorbed it and continued rising.

Anyone with any transaction issues, just sit tight and don't worry. Know that nearly the entire world is having the same issues as you. In the meantime, your XEM keeps increasing in value.

I see people keep asking the same questions, making the same speculations. If you would take the time to read the past few pages of posts, I thought I had answered your questions quite well. Go back a few pages and read them slowly.  Wink
Those with stolen funds are being reimbursed in JPY at a valuation of aprox 88 US Cents. Repayment begins next week.

That's good to know that lots of others are having wallet issues. That means the NEM team probably knows about it.

If Coincheck funds start getting repaid next week, then I won't expect to see too much price increase for XEM until next week.
487  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][ICO] BANKERA - the Bank for the Blockchain Era on: March 09, 2018, 04:57:46 AM
Your email is your access to your account, where you keep money at. Therefore, you must make sure you are using a reliable and long-term service, not an email that expires after certain days/weeks/months. Many users do not even have verified accounts, so how SpectroCoin team be 1000% sure that it is you contacting them for a change?
In this situation, your email and personal data are the proof that you are the true owner of the account. It cannot be changed, because that would eliminate the whole purpose of it. It is the same as if you walk into a bank, present no identity confirmation and demand that they transfer funds from one account to another.
You are fully responsible for the provided information and the safety of your credentials.

I don't agree with your view completely. Your email is your ID, yes. But in the case of ID documents and bank verification you mentioned ID documents can be changed or replaced when lost. So, why not email addresses? What harm would it be if SpectroCoin added security questions for email recovery purposes? I assume you are opining that it's better for users to loose funds stuck in SpectroCoin rather than change email addresses to have access their accounts.

It should be very simple to verify if someone actually owns the account in question. You can ask for screen shots of account activity. You can make mini deposits and ask the user to provide the correct amounts and currencies. You can add a secret code to page three and ask for the user to find it by looking at the source code. The possibilities are literally endless. I am still able to log into my account. I just can't confirm anything by email. I agree that it would be better had I taken the time to complete my profile, enable 2FA, etc. But honestly, until this experience, I would have *never* guessed that *anyone* would think of an email address as something permanent and immutable.

BTW, I will keep bringing this up on this thread as long as my issue remains unresolved.

That reminds me so much of Cryptsy. It was great... until it wasn't.

Blast fro the past, lost a lot of coins there but pulled my major funds just before they went belly up.

I was lucky in that I didn't lose too much--I think just dust--when Cryptsy went belly up. I'd been having progressively worse difficulties with small BTC withdrawals (which was all I was doing back then), and so I kind of gravitated to Poloniex and other trading platforms. I remember I assumed that Cryptsy was having genuine technical difficulties. Nowadays if a trading platform starts to have technical difficulties I take that as a sign to leave.

I'm glad you got your major funds out in time.

The price is climbing on BitTrex.

However, I notice the BitTrex wallet is offline pending hearing from the developer.

Also, the supernode my harvesting account is on is down at the moment.

Is there some major fork or upgrade going on at the moment?

I thought this article was really great news. Basically, the CFTC commissioner is saying that the cryptocurrency industry should set up its own regulatory system under guidance from the CFTC and SEC. He figured the industry itself would better understand the regulations than the government at this point. I'm really liking the Trump Administration's light and cautious touch on our industry.

Trust me, SpectroCoin support and I are on a first name basis! I'm currently being told there is nothing they can do, which I consider to be garbage. There are *always* options. Cryptopia, where I have the same problem, just last night changed my account profile email address based on account information I'd provided them. I will keep bugging SpectroCoin. They have no right to hold my funds hostage.

I hope they haven't made some terribly stupid design mistake where the user id in their database is somehow linked to or derived from user's email address. Otherwise it's just a matter of getting ahold of the right person. Keep the pressure on them until the problem is kicked to someone who isn't a low level support grunt.

Even if they have, there are ways to deal with it. They said I should set up a new account with a different email address and then transfer the assets over. I can't do the second part due to email confirm requirements, but I already took care of the first part. They would need some way to prove that I own both accounts so that they can make the transfer on their end and feel confident that no one is getting scammed. I suggested they make a small deposit of some currency into each account and then have me tell support what it is. That I can do since I'm still able to log into the original account and the new account. Funny thing is that banks do that sort of thing all the time to double check that you actually own the bank account you are trying to link to whatever third party service it is.

Yes, I am going to keep bugging them about this until I regain access to my funds. There simply has to be a way to make it work for everyone. Thanks for the support.

I think this is an issue we as a community should press down on spectroCoin for a  change. Cyptocurrency services operators such as SpectroCoin should find a fair balance between their corporate policies on security and customer convinience and satisfaction. We should pressure SpectroCoin for a change. This is also one way through which the community could define standards and self-regulate the industry.

I would definitely appreciate any help and support anyone here wants to offer. I think there should always be a way to change emails or recover accounts where email access was lost, because it does happen sometimes.

Poloniex's answer is little bit strange. Like they would not understand that the email address is dead and still you are the only one, who can access the Poloniex account (you know the user name and password). If you would have 1 BTC in that account, Poloniex could at least freeze the account for a year and wait, if there will be anyone else requiring the account's 1 BTC.

"backup recovery addresses" - Good idea.

I would agree with you that Poloniex' answer was a bit strange, though it's not unique. Profile email addresses carry a more permanent weight in cryptoland than in the "real world" it seems.

With Poloniex, fortunately I have only dust sitting in my account, so at some point here I'll just create a new one and link it to the old one for verification purposes and that will be that.

And I finally heard from Cryptopia, so that problem is solved, or should be. I just need to somehow persuade SpectroCoin to work with me on either changing my profile email account or helping me transfer from old to new account, something I can't do right now because withdrawals require email confirmation.
494  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: CoinTracking - Profit/Loss Portfolio and Tax Reporting for Digital Currencies on: March 07, 2018, 03:11:42 PM
I recently shared all the information I have entered into CoinTracking with my accountants and they told me that it is a very good program which tracks the information they need very well. They believe that once we are finished with this year's return as well as amending some previous returns where I should have reported crypto-activity but didn't, filing taxes from here on out should be very easy as far as the cryptocurrency activities go. So I just wanted to give a shoutout. Buying the lifetime unlimited CoinTracking membership a few months ago has turned out to be one of the best investments I've ever made.
495  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how to earn Bitcoin without investing?? on: March 07, 2018, 03:07:19 PM
I love this question because the answer is YES!

There have been a lot of great suggestions on this thread. I highly recommend Steemit as an option. You earn STEEM and SBD by blogging, commenting and upvoting. You can then trade that for BTC and use that to buy other coins or just hold onto the BTC. You also can do pretty well leaving it as STEEM and SBD. The main benefit to Steemit is the community and networking you can do, and those activities can more often than not lead to profitable opportunities where you can earn in cryptocurrencies for sharing a skill. Once you get on Steemit, I would highly recommend you connect with minnowbooster.net. That service allows you to either boost your own posts' upvotes or if you have STEEM to invest, you can rent it out at amazing returns to others who want their work boosted.

You can do a lot of networking on this forum, and if you have skills to offer, there are lots of projects here that could use the help and are happy to pay out in their cryptocoin. It's especially fun to do some work, get paid lots of some new and undervalued coin and then watch it grow in value.

Try to find good Proof of Stake (POS) coins, as that way your wallet balance can increase along with the coin's value. My favorite POS coin is DMD Diamond. DNotes is another coin to check out. It is not currently POS, but will be once it changes over to the new algorithm sometime later this month.

I appreciate the information about how the system works, even though I'm not in any particular need to exploit or maximize it. The system for ranking up has changed and evolved since I joined five years ago and it is interesting to know how it works in its current form.

I will reiterate what others have said, which is that no matter how the system works in terms of awarding activity points and merit, the strategy will be the same. Post only when you actually have something to say. The more you "listen" and learn here, the more intelligent things you will have to share, and therefore, the more you will be able to post.

Merriam-Webster Adds More Crypto-Related Terms to Dictionary

https://dcebrief.com/merriam-webster-adds-more-crypto-related-terms-to-dictionary/

This was one of the criteria I was using to measure the success of cryptocurrency as an industry - when it no longer showed up as a spelling error. Grin

That is a good one, Chase. It's a great indicator of acceptance.

I have my own indicators too: More and more top bankers are requesting to connect with me on LinkedIn. And to top it off - including a Former Secretary of Treasury and other government officials. It's quite an honor. We must be doing something right and that has taken only four years to show up. Let's Go DNotes!!!

I'm seeing the same anecdotal evidence.

Last Wednesday I started the Oxford Blockchain Strategy Programme and the first week has been groundwork stuff and getting to e-know classmates. The majority, ~60% probably, are bankers; with a whole bunch of that group from London.

A couple crypto entrepreneurs and a couple fewer technical folks. But mostly, a lot of bankers.

This is actually really great news, not only for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole, but especially for DNotes. I think at the end of the day, the currencies that succeed will be the ones whose leaders and developers make friends with the bankers. The banking and financial system will adapt but it's not going away.
498  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][ICO] BANKERA - the Bank for the Blockchain Era on: March 07, 2018, 02:43:31 PM
I need to warn people. You cannot change your SpectroCoin profile email address! So what happens if you lose access to your email address? The answer is you just lost all the funds in your account.

I'm learning this lesson the hard way, but never, ever register on any cryptocurrency related service with an email address that might expire or for any other reason not be there in a year or next month. YOU CANNOT CHANGE IT. Your profile email address is your permanent identity.

On SpectroCoin, you can create a new account and transfer all assets to the new account. If you have any doubts about the email address you currently use in your profile, then do it now. Use a gmail address to register an account, or some other email provider that is too big to fail. Make the change while you still have access to the old email address. Because once you lose access to it, you will no longer be able to confirm withdrawals and that's it. Bye bye funds!

SpectroCoin is not alone. Poloniex says they can't change profile email addresses either. Cryptopia for practical purposes (because they do not respond to support tickets) can't either. BitTrex has a process you can go through to change your email address (and I did this successfully) but it's not automatic. Coinbase does allow you to change your profile email address automatically, but they seem to be the exception.

When it comes to cryptocurrency related services, your profile email address is your permanent identity. So make sure your email address is also permanent!

If you have problems with your current email, you must contact SpectroCoin support. There is a security procedure to be followed in such situation and they can inform you better in case this happens.

What do you all think of coinfalcon.com

Quote
To vote, sign up for an account on CoinFalcon and deposit the cryptocurrency you wish to be listed. When a cryptocurrency has at least 100 users depositing a net amount (deposit - withdraw) of 100,000 €, it is eligible to be listed.

That's an interesting voting system--vote with your money, basically. I'm curious how it would work. Do they have wallets for all the coins in existence, just not active markets for all of them?

That would be roughly 200,000 USD they want on deposit in a given coin before listing it.

Assuming the logistics work out, I could deposit around 1/200th of that based on last market price. However, I don't want to make a deposit and just have it sitting indefinitely on a platform I'm unfamiliar with. So if we're going to all go for this, then I'd like to maybe coordinate our deposits so they all happen within a brief time period, DVC gets listed, and then we can quickly either sell or withdraw.
500  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: March 07, 2018, 02:28:42 PM
...
My problem is that I with no warning lost access to my log in email address. On *most* ordinary sites if that happens you simply log into your profile page and change it and that's it. But with some of these crypto trading sites, Cryptopia and SpectroCoin included, there is no way to do that. If you lose access to your email address, you just lost all your funds. I had no idea an email address was such a point of failure. BitTrex has a process for changing your email address and their support is responsive. Poloniex says there is no way to change it, and fortunately in that case I'd activated 2FA only confirmation for withdrawals, plus I don't have anything significant on there, so I'll just create a new account.

...

What happened with your email access ?

The domain provider went dark with no warning. I had used that address for years and everything seemed fine. I had to go through the process of changing my profile email address on BitTrex, CoinBase, DNotes Vault and a few other places. The process varied widely in terms of how straightforward it was. It was a piece of cake on Coinbase and DNotes Vault. I had to go through support and provide a whole bunch of information on BitTrex, but they did change it and I'm happily logging in there with my new email address. Poloniex said that they can't change it and all I can do is open up a new account. Fortunately I don't have any assets there and even if I did, I'd enabled 2FA confirmation so email confirm is bypassed which had also been the case on BitTrex before they made the change. If my home IP address ever changes, that's when I'll have issues.

And I have great news! Late last night Cryptopia finally got back to me and informed me that I had provided them with enough details for them to make the change to my profile email address on my account with them. Yay! I'll try to log in tomorrow once enough time has passed for the change to populate.

So now I'm just waiting on SpectroCoin. They are communicating with me, but really dragging their feet. Right now they are telling me that since I can't verify my account in the first place, there is nothing they can do. Well, I wasn't verified on Cryptopia either so I sent SpectroCoin a copy of Cryptopia's reply saying that if Cryptopia can do it, so can SpectroCoin. I will keep bugging them about it until I get my way, and more importantly, my funds.

My recommendation is that you use a gmail address to register on anything crypto-related, because Google is too big to fail and the most likely provider to still be around ten years from now. However, if Google ever shows signs of cracking, then you will want to find a new email provider and change over all your accounts or transfer all your assets *before* you lose any email access.

One feature that would be good for any cryptocurrency site to implement since profile email addresses are so darned important and inflexible would be a place to store up to five backup or recovery email addresses that a user could enter ahead of time and in the event of losing access to the main email address, they can seamlessly switch over to one of the backup email addresses.
