5461  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are you using a Public DNS server? your coins are at risk ! on: May 01, 2018, 10:56:28 AM
Use multiple wallets on different hardware. It's always good to have several offline wallets generated by different hardware and stored in different locations. (the private key that is) Private keys should also never be stored digitally for obvious reasons. Even if you must access your coins on a regular basis a hardware wallet is likely worth the initial investment as it prevents some of the common pitfalls.

My general advise for people wanting to exchange coins is only store your coins on the exchange just before he actually exchange them and then transfer them to an offline wallet as soon as possible if needed. If you are exchanging high amounts then it might be better to pay a little more in fees and exchange them in smaller chunks to prevent losing all if a exchange was compromised whilst you were exchanging.
5462  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can we know specific bitcoin is stolen goods? on: May 01, 2018, 10:48:25 AM
There is such a concept known as "tainted coins". You can read the inputs on this link for more information, but basically, since Bitcoins can be traced, it's possible to know which ones have been stolen. It's not very reliable though, unless you've actually followed the traces of a hack from its origin. You probably could get in trouble for buying stolen coins, but only because authorities might think you're the thief or are related to the heist.

As for whether or not you should buy in that situation, remember: if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

This is poor logic. I imagine everyone has been involved in handling stolen cash/counterfeited cash. Doesn't mean they are guilty of heists/making them. Bitcoin is the same, and identifying whether someone has been involved in a hack/heist or what ever would actually be difficult after a few transactions. Especially with the amount of mixing services/exchanges which just make it easier for the transactions to look legitimate.
5463  Other / Meta / Re: Auto-lock of topics after a week or 100 posts to solve spammer problem? on: May 01, 2018, 10:43:15 AM
This isn't really about old topics being bumped but spam mega threads that are just populated by your average bounty hunter who is here just to churn out his one liners for payment. The sad thing is, even good discussion threads can get turned into these so there isn't really any solutions other than to make sure campaign managers don't pay for generic responses in spam threads. If they didn't they'd stop getting made.
I think this is the case already with the majority of campaigns it's the fact that people are too stupid to realize what a megathread is I think or simply think they'll get away with it. Judging by the campaigns most of them do indeed get away with it. We either tackle campaigns themselves or the people running them. How we do the latter I'm not sure, but I imagine theymos wouldn't want to ban etc those who aren't doing their job in signature campaigns.
5464  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with running Bitcoin Node on Ubuntu on: May 01, 2018, 10:38:18 AM
It may be hidden. If you press CTRL + H to show hidden folders where the .bitcoin should be then that will give you a definite answer if it's there or not. If it's definitely not there then it hasn't been installed correctly or at all for what ever reason. It would be better to remove everything via the terminal that's related to the commands you put in to install it and then reinstall. What user group are you trying to install it on?
5465  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with running Bitcoin Node on Ubuntu on: April 29, 2018, 08:41:28 PM
Okay, so when you are going into the Dash I'm assuming it's showing the logo of Bitcoin as you've already tried launching it. This tells me it's installed. This might be a simple fix, but I've not got a client running on this computer to test as I go and trying to do it from memory plus my version is running on a Linux machine but, not Ubuntu. Although the process should be somewhat similar. I guess you could try locating the directory via: /home/<username>/.bitcoin/

if that exists take a look at what's inside.

5466  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with running Bitcoin Node on Ubuntu on: April 29, 2018, 08:33:28 PM
I'm going to ignore running it from the Dash for the time being as I'm much more familiar with the terminal. Your commands seem fine, and in theory it should run through the Dash. However, it seems you are looking to install the GUI rather than the daemon. So in the terminal to launch the GUI you would need to:

~$ bitcoin-qt

Let us know what it returns if it doesn't launch it right away. If it comes back as it hasn't been installed then we'll take a closer look at the installation.
5467  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: The best way to restore erased data from your phone. on: April 29, 2018, 08:08:01 PM
How would you produce the alternative image.

Me, personally, would plug my phone into my computer and try to use it as a flash drive with recovery software running from the computer (you wouldn't run anything from the phone). I'm not sure how the image creation would work though, and I know my way would be bad say if there was a debug file that got written to in the process of connectiong and disconnecting or the recovery software was too strong for to not affect the memory card too much.
The problem with using it as a flash drive is the phone would still  be writing data in the background as there's services still running to keep the phone operating. I would recommend getting the copy and then turning the phone off rather than keeping it on and potentially risk writing data over the existing data.

There's a few programs out there, but I can't vouch for their security and effectiveness. For example, one is called Magnet Acquire and another one called Oxygen Forensics. But, again I can't vouch for it's ability to do the job. OP can search up forensic tools which are compatible with android or what ever software the phone is running and take it from there.
5468  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with running Bitcoin Node on Ubuntu on: April 29, 2018, 08:04:06 PM
List the commands that you put into the terminal. I know we could just look at Bitcoin.org to see the instructions you followed, but I think it's better if we get you to list it as you might realize your mistake. (may of missed something)

Also, you specifically say you can't launch from Dash, but have you tried launching it via the terminal? Also, are there any errors or does it simply not launch?
5469  Other / Meta / Re: Banned account i don't know why :( on: April 29, 2018, 07:47:33 PM
This is a lesson for all of us. Even copy pasting your own post and translated it to other language is not a good thing to do on this forum. I know you dont have bad intention with this, but it is still wrong, so you need to be patience this time as everyone already mention, account recovery is not the top priority for now.

That's going by the assumption that the OP is accurate in what he's saying. He could of been banned for another reason. I don't think translating your own topic is against the rules, and doubt that he was banned for that. Although, mistakes do happen.

Unless, it's poorly translated do you really see an issue with translating your own post? Judging by the post it's obvious that English isn't the OP first language, but it's not so poorly done that it's irritating.

5470  Other / Meta / Re: Bounty manager trust rating on: April 29, 2018, 07:40:40 PM
I propose to introduce an internal rating of the forum manager with feedback on the similarity of the trust system. For objectivity, this rating will be available only to three ranks: Sr. Member, Hero, Legendary.
I understood and disagree that this would benefit. The trust system is already in place for this kind of thing and I'll say it again bounty campaigns/signature campaigns shouldn't determine the forum. The trust system can be used for identifying bad/good bounty managers. The way I see it is if a campaign manager isn't doing their job like they are promising to their clients then they aren't trustworthy. They are basically receiving Bitcoin or what ever for doing nothing.

I may have gone on a little rant, but that's because it's a huge problem and people seem to think that the forum should be accommodating for the campaigns rather than the other way around.
5471  Other / Meta / Re: STOP 'Quote post'- To Everyone Who use "Quote" Most of the time on: April 29, 2018, 09:43:15 AM
It's just forum etiquette it's not really something that can be done about it, but a friendly reminder isn't going to hurt is it?

It is just impossible to teach people to use 'quote' only when it is really necessary and to take only a part of a text instead to 'quote' a whole thread.
Why is it impossible? Your taught at a young age to highlight certain points in a text and respond to it. I don't think it's unfair to expect some sort of commitment to the forum and making your point more clear. The only reason why I can see this is a problem for people is that they are lazy, and just want to reply without really formatting it. Quoting certain sentences makes your point more clear because you are only addressing that little snippet rather than the whole text you should do it for your benefit and not just everyone else on the forum.
5472  Other / Meta / Re: review and give me your feedback, sir. on: April 29, 2018, 09:36:48 AM
No.

You post in megathreads with nothing new. Everything you have said has been regurgitated several times already. I bet you haven't even read the previous replies before you. You just seem to pick some random post and reply to it.

This isn't in a megathread, but take this example:
at all events in 2025, the price will continue to increase from now on. those who invest $ 5000 will definitely become millionaires in the years to come. I think the man who invests now, will be the most fortunate. can I hold this talk, if you do not believe it.

You've not gone into detail why you think it's going to rise. You've made a couple of bold statements without even hinting to as why. This isn't constructive it's just a blind guesstimate.

By the way you don't have to ask for a review as that's probably frowned upon by the community. Your best bet is to have a look at other posts that have received merit. You'll then see the standard of post that you need to make.
5473  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hacker demands Bitcoin ransom on hacked website on: April 29, 2018, 08:18:33 AM
I don't know if this actually happened or if it's one of those staged things to get a few giggles out of everyone, but I appreciate how calm these guys are. "Sorry sir" I love it that the alleged hacker is so polite in this situation too.

Hey according to Roger Ver Bitcoin does = Bitcoin Cash so y'know. Actually, taking a look at his twitter the other tweets with his ongoing commentary are even funnier than the conversation.
5474  Other / Meta / Re: STOP 'Quote post'- To Everyone Who use "Quote" Most of the time on: April 29, 2018, 08:03:19 AM
I don't think it's something wrong to quote full original post, especially if it's not long. If you are quoting long text, offcourse it's better to leave important parts of text only.
My general rule is use the reply button without quoting anyone if you are responding to either the OP or the reply before you. If you only want to address certain parts of the previous reply/op then I may quote those parts and respond. I don't always do this, but I think it's good practice to do this.

It may not be "wrong" in the sense that it's against forum rules, but it can get annoying quickly.
5475  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are there Crytocurrency trading Robots that trade profitably like Forex Robots? on: April 28, 2018, 10:24:30 PM
I only know one which is recommended by a few reputable members and that's Gunbot. I haven't used it personally, but here's the link to it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1715214.0

There's probably other bots out there, but your probably not going to find a more reputable guy selling these types of automatic traders than Gunthar.
5476  Other / Meta / Re: Bounty manager trust rating on: April 28, 2018, 10:15:34 PM
Bounty campaigns/signature campaigns shouldn't determine the forum. I would disagree that bounties are an integral part of the forum. It's great that they are making people money and making their life better, but the forum quality has paid. I would agree that bounties need to have restrictions, but I don't think your suggestions are the way to go about it.

I was initially against hilariousandco's suggested of paid signatures, but I see it as the only solution to end this epidemic.
5477  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: blockchain help on: April 25, 2018, 07:28:36 PM
It may be to late now, but take a look at the formats of private keys to avoid this problem in the future: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Private_key

An address only start with a 1 or a 3. Unless, it's a segwit address which starts with bc1. bc = Bech32, but will always have a 1 after it. Whenever you are sending Bitcoin to an address (thes ones which start with 1, 3, or if segwit bc1) make sure you have access to the private key which corresponds to that address. You can import this into a desktop wallet such as Bitcoin core to verify if the private key is indeed to the address you are sending too.

Where did you get this address from to import it into your wallet? You should never import any address that you haven't actually generated.
5478  Other / Meta / Re: Our very own sMerit Network Picture on: April 25, 2018, 07:15:21 PM
People do anything for a few merits lol
His post is really interesting and he must have spent hours working on it. Would he do something like that without the merit system?

I am impressed with all the time I have spent on this forum, reading and trying to write good content to get enough merits to rank up and join campaigns. Then I saw I didn't care that much about those campaigns and became addicted to this merit system lol

Doesn't matter. This is the exact type of content we've been missing over the years. Hopefully, this won't stop at the merit system. We've been waiting for someone to do something similar to visualizing the trust system.  It's one thing getting the data, but presenting it in a clean fashion is normally where these types of things fall short. This one hasn't.
5479  Economy / Auctions / Re: WTS https://ethereumlottery.net on: April 25, 2018, 07:12:51 PM
Besides lottery sites being easily made via either hiring a developer or purchasing one of the many copies of code which have been circulating for years now do you really think implementing a miner for monero is the best thing to do for the business? It might be in the TOS but, did you not want to mention that here?
5480  Other / Meta / Re: Members in this forum are abusing the merit system on: April 24, 2018, 09:07:55 PM
For anyone wondering he's referring to achow101 just because he's deleted several of the ops posts. He's already opened a thread about this today which has already been locked: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3387753.msg35493379#msg35493379

For some reason when users have their posts deleted they come up with some conspiracy theory that the moderators are against them and censoring them. Majority of the cases this isn't the case at all. I personally believe achow101 has better things to do that launching a personal agenda against op.

Never mind found another thread he's opened today: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3386727.0

Here's achow101 reply:
The majority of the posts of yours I removed were reported by other users for being off topic or spam. It's not like I'm actively following every single post you make and deleting each one. You may notice that many of your posts which do not take threads in completely different directions have not been removed even though they certainly could have been as they are within my jurisdiction. Furthermore, you are not the only person whose posts have been removed by me. I remove many posts from many different users each day. This is called moderation, not censorship.

My job is not to censor you nor is it to "maintain some narrative" (if it were, then a lot of posts from users like franky1 would have been removed). My job is to keep threads on topic and to remove useless posts that add nothing to the discussion.

Also moderators cannot ban anyone. Only admins and global mods can do that, and they only ban if they agree with a moderators suggestion that someone should be banned.

What makes you think I'm a fascist or a nazi? Do you realize that there are more to those terms than just censorship?

Side note: complaining about my moderation in every post you make is off topic for all of the places you are posting and thus your posts will likely be removed if you do that.

Regarding your newest spam about needing to index the site to see what posts are deleted, there's a public modlog although it does not contains the contents of the posts that were removed, just what action was taken.
