4561  Other / Meta / Re: [SUGGESTION] Show trust in beginners &help board on: January 15, 2019, 01:00:42 AM
I agree that ico should not be in beginners &help. However ico are not the only possible scam/phishing possibilities. There are different services which are discussed in beginners &help board: vanity addresses, mixers, exchanges,  wallets, to name a few.

All those services could possibly be used by a scammer to steal money from beginners.
Okay, so it's pretty obvious that I care for non bias discussion, and will try, and protect that as much as possible. However, I personally don't receive many reports for the Beginners, and help section, and honestly don't frequent it too often. Maybe, I'll have to dip my toes in more regularly. However, the things that you have mentioned there I would tend to argue that most of those belong elsewhere if they are discussing a service. Discussion such as Mixers, exchanges, and wallets belong in Service discussion, exchanges, and Bitcoin technical support/wallet child section retrospectively. Vanity addresses really does depend on the type of discussion being had. If they are generic questions then Beginners & Help is more often than not the best place. However, usually these topics could fit elsewhere for a better representation. What Beginners & Help is good for is "basic" questions such as "What is a physical Bitcoin" or "what is mining?" etc.

A newbie could ask for a Wallet and a known scammer could just post a link to a phishing wallet address and scam him.
Okay, so I would prefer to implement a different solution to try, and protect bias discussion. What I would recommend in these instances is including a sticky for newbie safety (which has already been done) and yeah I am aware that the majority of users on the forum will outright ignore sticky threads. But, what if we were to implement a warning when clicking on a link "You are leaving Bitcointalk. This link may be unsafe, please confirm its safe before proceeding" something like that. Many sites do this, and I'm not sure if it even works, honestly. However, I like the idea of protecting Bitcoin users. But, they also need to do their own research, and learn. If we put all the warnings in place to prevent scamming from happening while minimally impacting other parts of the forum I would prefer to take that approach. I'm not totally against having trust ratings visible, honestly. However, I think I would prefer not too, because of the impact on bias. Basically, we'll see a lot of trusted members having their words taken as the be all and end all when that is rarely the case.
4562  Other / Meta / Re: [SUGGESTION] Show trust in beginners &help board on: January 15, 2019, 12:48:06 AM
Alright, evidence has been shown that might indicate that trust ratings being visible to guests would be beneficial. However, I would still argue the fact that B&H, and other discussion based sections do not require visible trust ratings. ICO's should not be in the Beginners & Help section first of all. Therefore, we don't require trust ratings for that. Altcoin discussion, does not require it because topics there should be discussion. I think restricting the visibility of trust ratings in discussion sections is important to avoid bias. That might be just my personal opinion, but I like to think of this forum as a place of discussion before anything else. However, any section which has a trading/business aspect to it should include trust ratings, and maybe should be visible to guests in these sections too. I'm not sure how you would implement it judging on my concerns of bias, but maybe hiding trust by default on discussion sections, but if the user clicks on a user they can then see the trust to prevent automatic bias from kicking in.

As for local sections. Those that are without marketplace child boards etc should probably have trust ratings displayed by default.
4563  Other / Meta / Re: [SUGGESTION] Show trust in beginners &help board on: January 14, 2019, 10:49:20 PM
And also make trust ratings visible for guests. Beginners and help is a section which is also often visited by guests which are not logged in and therefore can't see the trust score / links to the trust page of someone.
There's not much point to this. The thing is with trust is that people tend to judge users on their trust feedback, and therefore may dismiss valuable information. Guests will not be trading with users without registering an account. Therefore, they do not need to see the trust score of users as it would just affect their perception of the user by their trust score. Although, it's sensible to take trust score into consideration, many users with high trust scores are often wrong, and those with negative scores can  be right. It works both ways. Beginners, and help is mainly a board where someone is asking for help by asking "basic" questions or well discussed topics. Therefore, trust really isn't needed there. Could it be beneficial? Possibly, but I like the think that the trust system is mainly in use for trading. Merit is now the indicator to how well a user posts.
4564  Other / Meta / Re: Account recoveries are moving again on: January 13, 2019, 11:54:29 PM
But, I do not remember the original email ID with which my account was registered 5 years ago. Though, I have provided signed message from an address, that was used within one month of account registration.

What am I supposed to do?
If they are telling you that you require the original email address then you require the original email address. You can send an email back to see if there's any possibility of proving otherwise, but it seems that the prerequisites are pretty strict in account recoveries. Unfortunately, I imagine the majority of people trying to recover their accounts would have lost their original email address especially if it was made a a few years ago.
4565  Other / Meta / Re: What can be done better? on: January 08, 2019, 01:52:25 AM

Plagiarized posts often remain in place but the user gets banned. The report is still "good".

Pretty much. Although, sometimes plagiarized content gets reported after someone has been banned, and then I usually remove it to prevent it being reported another dozen times.
4566  Other / Meta / Re: Account recoveries are moving again on: January 06, 2019, 05:29:03 PM
No response received till date. Any idea how long it might take? Since the new method was in place, have anyone successfully recovered their account till date?
All we know is that account recoveries are moving , but we don't know exactly at what speed they are going. Just be patient, and if you've provided all the required information needed then it will be recovered eventually.

I'm still quietly confident that Liverpool are favorites due to the 4pt gap, however Man City won't slip up much, and will add pressure right up until the end of the season. This could go right down to the last game of the season. I don't know the fixtures of Liverpool, and Man City yet, but if they only have 1 away game against the top 6 then that looks very promising indeed.
4568  Other / Meta / Re: Attention Theymos: This is a sMerit holdup! Hands in the air! on: January 05, 2019, 02:24:17 AM
For now if you can't reward them let other people know! I'd be more than willing to spend some sMerits to those that deserve them. I only dedicated certain hours to sending sMerit, and will miss quite a few deserving posts!
4569  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cloudbet's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: January 01, 2019, 08:18:56 PM
Although, we are only half way into the league I genuinely feel that if Liverpool can come away with 3 points at the Eithad tomorrow then they should be comfortable at the top, and go on to win the league. I'm kind of nervous for them as if they lose then the media, and other fans will be calling Liverpool bottlers once again, and I don't know how that would affect the team mentally. They have seemed professional up to this point, and have just been grinding results out even when they're not at their best. I'm slightly optimistic for Liverpool.
4570  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cloudbet's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: December 30, 2018, 10:32:50 PM
And now that we can secure 2 or 3 goal cushions, we know how to sit back and keep ball for the rest of the game... without being too much of a dull spectacle either.

Am I happy? Never been happier for the longest time. I was still afraid to close my eyes with Suarez and Co, but right now? Even with the threat of false dawn I'm ready to believe.

Up next, Etihad. Can't wait.
Yeah, I had doubts too. Liverpool seemed to be struggling for a few games, and were just grinding out results. Their front 3 didn't seem to be clicking either. Now though? Well, they seem to be firing on all cylinders, and they have got stability at the back which we haven't seen since the Hypia days. It isn't just Van Djik either, Robertson is looking the real deal. He's been good ever since his Hull days, but ever since he's put on a Liverpool shirt he has been unreal. Honestly, don't think I've seen him have a bad game.
4571  Other / Meta / Re: Planing to translate whole topics to local board> need permission. on: December 30, 2018, 10:26:00 PM
It's always best to get permission from everyone that you translate from. I think that's just general courteous, and should be done. As well as providing a link to the original source. You could quote the original replies, and translate under them, but still quoting the other text. Again, I would personally get permission from anyone that you are translating from.

As long as you're offering credit, and not passing it off as your own then it should be fine.

Damn, I wasn't that far off with the prediction of 4-1, but honestly going into half time I was expecting a lot more. Seems Liverpool did what they needed too though, and just controlled the game from then on out.
4573  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cloudbet's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: December 29, 2018, 04:39:07 PM
I've missed putting in my predictions over the Christmas period, but I had no chance anyway! So, consider it a donation to the pot haha. I'm going with a 4-1 victory to Liverpool today I think Liverpool will find the game easy, but with the attack of Arsenal I see them nabbing a goal or maybe even two.
4574  Other / Meta / Re: I've stopped reporting posts on: December 24, 2018, 02:50:15 PM
I heard those that report Santa rewards generously :p

I wouldn't be worried about reports being marked bad if I were you. You can always message the moderator that you think dealt with it. It's pretty easy to work out sometimes, and like this instance your report was a genuine bad report.
4575  Other / Meta / Re: metehan027 - recovery (Already pm to Cyrus) on: December 23, 2018, 02:16:38 PM
The only way you're getting that account back is if you posted an address publicly, and can sign it. Like mentioned you can also find the ID of a personal message, and sign one you sent within there if presented to cyrus. However, passport or any other method will not work, and won't be sufficient evidence that you're the original owner.
4576  Other / Meta / Re: About bitcointalk.org Registration system on: December 23, 2018, 02:14:29 PM
Then it shouldn't be a problem to get one's email and SMS verified if one is a legit user. It's not like the forum will display one's phone number for everyone to see.

The problem with SMS is that someone can port your phone number to a phone that they control. I know that many cell phone carriers are aware of this and now advise people to have a code that must be given to port a phone number. However, if someone gets access to this numerical code, you are as good as hacked.
If you do it via e-mail verification, the hacker simply needs to gain access to the e-mail and it's no good.
Using a 2FA program like Google Authenticator is a better option. Unfortunately, it is so good, that a person can end up locking themselves out of the account. In order to restore access, the administration would have to verify the person's ownership of the account to reset the 2FA.

Depending on the automatic recovery system that's coming up it might not be that bad after all. I know nothing about how it works, but I'm assuming it checks for staked addresses, and unlocks the account with a signature from one of those addresses. Obviously, it's going to be a little more complex than that to prevent abuse, and I don't really want to make predictions as some users will take that as fact. But, getting locked out of your account might just be a small hindrance if the automatic recovery system will be able to help.
4577  Other / Meta / Re: Merit system has lead to more quality posts? on: December 23, 2018, 02:10:13 PM
I have multiple entire sections on ignore, not to mention my extensive individual member ignore list, so I'd say the problem is still pretty bad.

When the merit system was rolled out in January, it definitely seemed like a lot of people were trying to improve their post quality, but since then it seems like the shitposting problem has returned (it never disappeared, but maybe it was taking a piss break for a bit).  There definitely need to be some improvements to the system, and I'm pretty sure that if Jr. Members with 1 merit continue to be allowed to join signature campaigns, nothing's going to really improve.

For a while, there were some campaigns that had merit requirements to join, but that faded out.  There used to be SMAS, but that also fizzled.
I believe that its improved the situation, but hasn't completely solved it. There's definitely an increase in the number of users actively trying to post good content. But, its okay if not all posts are top quality. I do agree that jr member signature campaigns or even low ranked members joining campaigns such as members is imposing a problem, because it's so easy to earn that merit. However, I very much doubt theymos would implement any kind of restriction, and I the projects advertising don't really care about the quality of the forum only their project.
4578  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cloudbet's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: December 22, 2018, 05:26:59 PM
That strike from Townsend was absolutely magnificent. He probably won't strike another ball as sweet as he did. What's more impressive it was pissing down with rain and he managed to keep his foot planted while doing a sort of half volley. Liverpool go 4 points clear before Christmas.
4579  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Reporting effectively on: December 21, 2018, 07:48:06 PM
I see. I appreciate your reply too.. I think it all boils down to the moderators which has the power to judge someones post and see if they needed to delete that reply or not, something like that. It cannot be considered as a plagiarism and it’s harder to catch or see. I guess people should just sometimes be aware or suspicious always in reading posts, a tickle in your instinct. Like spider sense is tingling. Lol.
I encourage merit sources or anyone rewarding merit, really to make sure that they check whether the post is plagiarism or not. I see a lot of replies that are merited, and they have just been copied, and pasted. Luckily this isn't sustainable for the user, and they usually get found out sooner rather than later. But, a few of them seem to be doing it to get to jr member, and then just spam.
4580  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cloudbet's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: December 19, 2018, 07:36:26 PM
Well, that's moaninho gone. I think that will have an incredible boost to the Liverpool boys, as I don't think anyone was truly expecting them to get rid of him before the Christmas period is over, and to have your closest rivals school you, and then get rid of your manager speaks volumes. Man Utd will likely get out of their rut, and start getting results. I just think moaninho's tactics are only suited to very good defensive sides, which United haven't had for years.
