4461  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Cafe on: July 09, 2019, 10:43:21 PM
I think that the reason for governments in this area bans cryptocurrencies is the rampant criminality there.
Governments probably try to regulate criminals and try to close every funnel of funding their illegal activities. They are not opposed to the technological innovation of bitcoin but maybe right now they don't have any other reason to allow it.

If this is indeed the reason it would be unjust. Cash, is as easy for criminals if not easier to use than Bitcoin. At least with Bitcoin you have recorded transactions on a public Blockchain, where as cash goes under the radar, and isn't public knowledge. Plus, cash is already used on the mass for criminals exchanging services, and goods.

Thanks for the insight and opinions on this. I guess it'll be a coin flip from now on reporting there as I've had some similar reports handled as I thought they would be.

It's probably best to take the advice of those that handle reports there, and is a good example of why I don't handle reports in the auction section. In my opinion though, many users here are posting in the auction section, and digital goods or whatever just to gain more exposure. (Just like that user is doing here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5145791.msg51156573#msg51156573)  I think we shouldn't quite get hung up on the technicality of using "bids", as opposed to "offers". It would be nice to have a more defined set of guidelines for this niche issue, but I guess it isn't justified.

The way the thread is worded it does sound like this is my price "x", but I'm willing to listen to best offers which to me is more suited to invites and accounts, and doesn't sound quite like an auction to me. Obviously, due to the way the report has been handled, and the difference in opinions here this is a "at mods discretion", and could vary depending on who's handling it.
4463  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Reporting effectively on: July 09, 2019, 06:10:55 PM
Curious on the opinions of others. I've been reporting a little in auctions whenever I browse the section, generally the reports are fine but I received a "bad" and figured I'd bring it here to discuss and give the thread a bump.
I guess it depends on the moderator dealing with it, but personally I believe that doesn't belong in the auctions section, and would have marked that good, and likely would have report it myself. As suchmoon suggests it may be because of the "bids" although I read that as open to offers more than bids. I think the auction section should be a place for threads which have a structured auction system such as bids, end time, and all that jazz.
4464  Other / Meta / Re: I just hit 'leet' on: July 08, 2019, 05:00:44 PM
Is collectibles the right term?   Everyone will have the same collection...

How about "Achievements"?

P.S.  Congrats.  Smiley
Could be implemented into the badge system that is suppose to be coming soon. I'm not sure if this would just degrade the badge system or because there's no too many easter eggs could be worth including in the badge system. I think milestones should probably be rewarded, but I'd like to have badges somewhat exclusive to reward those that work for them. Reporting for example.
4465  Other / Meta / Re: No plagiarism/banned on: July 08, 2019, 04:58:33 PM
As you might know plagiarism very rarely gets unbanned.
You are now in ban evasion and your account deserves to be banned.
You're allowed to post within meta about your ban if you have been banned, and it won't be considered ban evasion. Posting for any other reason outside your ban appeal, and that is considered ban evasion. In those instances just report the post, and include a reference link if possible.
4466  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Double Spent - experiment and failed - may be we have a clue on: July 08, 2019, 04:56:22 PM
Yes, according to your data this looks like only around 5% of the total merit transactions face such merit double sending problems approximately

I agree by looking at the numbers it is not that big of an issue and most of the generous merit sender's would not do such double spending mistakes often.
And some of these will be intentional. I've merited a post, and thought "actually this probably deserves a little more", and have then proceeded to reward more merit. In the grand scheme of things this really isn't a problem, and only affects such a small amount of users.
4467  Other / Meta / Re: Who else agrees that self moderation of ANN threads shouldn't be possible? on: July 08, 2019, 04:53:48 PM
Self moderated threads are good and bad but we shouldn't ban the use because of some individual who are not sure of what they do in this forum. Many are times, I saw some threads which are not moderated and some enemies of that project will take it upon themselves to shoot in bad arrows so, if it was self-defense thread that wouldn't have happened. I will keep supporting the self-defense threads because of my personal experience as a bounty Hunter I am.
We  shouldn't over estimate the powers internet witches around the cryptocurrency world where ones enemies will fight a project under the name of false pretext.
This is a good point. There are several announcements which are similar, and that comes with competition which usually means that they have trollfest or accusations directed at them. This likely goes on within their Telegram and other communication methods more due to the fact that if they bump their topic will are likely helping them more than they're hurting them though.
4468  Other / Meta / Re: Account Recovery team on: July 03, 2019, 05:55:27 PM
The original Email had the same PW as my Bitcointalk account they took it too...I know I know a Rookie mistake.

Luckily my password was different, but it didn't stop people from trying to get access to the email. I had all sorts, warnings from my email provider that so, and so tried logging in, and also social engineering techniques to my email to try, and get information out of me. Let's not forget the multiple phishing emails posing as blockchain.info, and coinbase etc. We all get lapse in security now, and again, and thankfully that was one of the things that made me up my security. It has been known that experts to have relatively weak passwords, because its both easy, and convenient.

Wish you the best in recovering your account.
4469  Other / Meta / Re: Account Recovery team on: July 03, 2019, 05:12:46 PM
If you can sign that address, and provide a message ID or a rough date the address was sent an admin could potentially take a look, and accept it.

How about the original email that was used to register your account with, what happened with it? Do you still have access to it?
According to the new procedure having access to the original email can be a way to verify you are the original owner of an account.

I'd hope that this was only true if a signed address was provided as well, because the database leaked email addresses also, and could of potentially been using the same password. I'm not part of the team, and I don't know how they go about recovering the accounts, but a full suite original email, signed address, and IP address will likely be the best option. I'd say the original email address would be the lowest priority due to the fact that email, and hashed passwords were leaked.

Again don't go by what I'm saying as I have no idea of the requirements specifically, but just my opinion regarding original email address.
4470  Other / Meta / Re: Decentralised merit sources on: June 27, 2019, 03:08:47 PM
If we don't need too much bitcoin in total supply, low inflation with scheduled halving each four years, I believe that we don't need to see more merits distributed each month to merit sources. I agree that local boards should have more merit sources, but it raises another difficulty issue on how to prevent abusements in local boards, that usually more chaotic and hardly to control, in my opinion. There are suggestions on increases of moderators on local boards, and I think such suggestions make sense. I don't think we should increase merit sources in local boards if moderators in local boards won't be risen concurrently.
Or new moderators for local boards simultaneously play as merit sources.
I don't think merit abuse, and the amount of moderators are directly related. Sure, if a merit source is abusing their merit in the local boards, then this may be a admin issue, but not a moderator. Anyone, who thinks merit abuse is going on can flag that up via reputation, and in cases involving merit sources to theymos. I also have a different viewpoint on Bitcoins limited total supply, and merit. Bitcoin is scalable, and merit requirements seem to be staying as they're to prevent injustice to those that have already earned it. Therefore, as activity increases, and hopefully the amount of good quality posts too we will need more merit to distribute if we are to reward good quality posters, unless your goal is to have an elite group of users at the higher ranks. Although, I have a different perspective to that, and believe good posters should be rewarded, and as the demand rises so should the supply. I'm not implying to drastic measures either. Having it challenging enough to combat account farmers, and spammers from reaching the higher ranks without hindering genuine quality members is the way to go about it in my opinion.   At the moment I think the forum is in a decent place when it comes to distribution of merit like I said previously. Generally, as activity rises in the forum more content is being buried, and in different time zones. Therefore, to cover all of this we would need to carefully select merit sources in sections, and timezones which merit aren't being distributed, and determine whether its because there's no good quality posts being made or there's not enough merit source eyes seeing the content.
4471  Other / Meta / Re: Decentralised merit sources on: June 27, 2019, 10:32:53 AM
My personal opinion is It's a good suggestion, but when put into practice it just doesn't seem feasible this is just to complicated. We already have issues with users understanding the trust system, and that is often misused. At the moment theymos chooses who he believes is right to distribute merit fairly, and I think this system is already working. There aren't too many issues with abuse, and the system seems to be somewhat stable in that there aren't a massive amount of users ranking up, but good quality ones are.

The forum currently isn't that active that merit isn't being distributed enough. The current user base, and the amount of merit sources are somewhat balanced at the moment. The only things we could likely improve on his merit distribution in local boards. This could be looked into in the future if we ever hit the point where the forum activity justified a system which "takes care of itself", but at the moment I don't think we need to be implementing complicated systems when the current system is good enough.

The dude claims no plagiarism but who knows except the mods on how and why his supposed friend was banned. Can you check? I went through the last 10 pages of his post history, and almost 99% of his posts are in the turkish board and a couple of posts for crappy-ass bounties. Maybe a turkish mod could help?
I definitely read his response as "no spam no plagarism", "message received" no idea why I interpreted it that way. As for checking what this user was banned for they aren't in the most recent reports that I have access too, and as far as I'm willing to take look I haven't come across the username. Not that I have any say in the matter anyway or would be willing to release that information. Unfortunately, this is a matter between the admins, and the user.

I'm sure our detectives here on the forum will find something though.

No spam or plagiarism.

If you have an email address included in the ban message then you need to appeal by sending an email to that address. That's your only chance of getting unbanned as plagiarism is considered a very serious offense around here, and depending on the circumstances they rarely get lifted.
4474  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Reporting effectively on: June 26, 2019, 09:47:13 PM
Seems no one bumping this thread. I think it should be sticked instead bumping. This is really a motivational post and especially for me. I believe few others will be motivate by reading this thread. We can cure lot of spam by using report to moderators button. To be honest lot of user don't know how to report, so this thread might help them.
I'd like to edit it a little further, and add a little more detail without it becoming too long. However, I'm not sure if this has had the impact that I wanted it too. I was hoping by giving users an idea what to report, and what to include it would reduce the attitude of "I might get it wrong and ruin my report percentage" as well as of course being a useful reference for in general.

Honestly, this thread has been pretty low on my priorities, and I haven't finished it even though I wrote this a year ago. Therefore, taking these points into consideration I'm not sure how much an impact it would have if it were stickied.

@Welsh can you please move this thread on B&H board for few days and keep it up ? Perhaps new members will motivate to report spammers.

They might do, but honestly I believe its better suited here, and I'll only forget about moving it back to here, and it'll be lost in beginners, and help. I'm hoping this thread gets some visitors from users searching "report" or something like that via the search tool on Meta, as I've not been consistent in bumping this thread.
4475  Other / Meta / Re: [HACK] One-click mod report, not for the faint of heart on: June 26, 2019, 07:10:01 PM
Fantastic tool that I've only just come across I'm sure will help us curb the oncoming invasion of spam due to the recent surge in price. Always appreciate anyone who dedicates their time in improving the forum by reporting content. Haven't tested the code myself or used it, but thanks for making something like this!

I'm fully expecting next time theymos releases the reporting stats that at least 10 people have 100k reports Wink
4476  Economy / Reputation / Re: This user is offering bitcointalk comment selling service on: June 25, 2019, 08:50:57 PM
I don't see how you equate them making (relevant?) comments on a thread as encouraging plagiarism? Huh Did you mean shit-posting? or spamming? Huh

If anything... it's simply a "Thread Bumping" service Roll Eyes Undecided
I'd agree with most of what you said that these generally cause issues with spam, however its not unheard of for these services to copy, and paste a lot of their content. So, really its just a massive pain in the balls across the whole field. The fact that some of these services are charging hundreds of dollars to do it is absolutely absurd.
4477  Other / Meta / Re: Have a whole forum for the Satoshi topics on: June 25, 2019, 08:43:48 PM
I don't understand the obsession with satoshi - the network has ran without him for the better part of a decade now, which clearly not only demonstrates that what satoshi is doing is completely irrelevant, and if he chooses to have some privacy then so be it; but also reinforces bitcoin's decentralisation.

It makes no sense to be so obsessed with the news with another new person claiming to be satoshi every hour. It simply does not affect the fundamentals of bitcoin, even if he was found.

Most of these threads are filled with garbage anyways. Report, move on, and let it die by itself.
It's within human nature to seek the unknown. Ever heard that the key to attraction is building mystery? This is part of the reason why people, and media are obsessed. Although, I don't tend to follow much of the crypto news these days, and certainly almost always ignore these Satoshi findings I'm still intrigued by why Satoshi disappeared. Although, personally I'd prefer it to remain as it is, I can definitely understand from a media point of view why they are always trying to bring out bogus stories. The good thing for us is it creates headlines for us, and generates exposure which I'm all for.
4478  Economy / Speculation / Re: $1,000,000 would kill bitcoin on: June 25, 2019, 08:35:19 PM
There will always be ways to force it to be, the question is that something we should really even focus on or concern ourselves over?
Entirely depends on your goals. I haven't spent any Bitcoin in a very long time now, and mainly hoard it. I've continued to invest in it, but I'm by no means a trader. I believe Bitcoin to be more than something we hope will reach x amount and cash out for your fiat currency. The only thing I consider more valuable at this present moment is real estate just because I can currently use that for what I want too. Whereas Bitcoin still has its limitations in the modern world.
4479  Economy / Speculation / Re: $1,000,000 would kill bitcoin on: June 25, 2019, 04:09:30 PM
Despite all of us brushing this off like its nothing, and nonsense this was discussed at length a few years ago, and was a legitimate concern. Obviously, there's ways around it, and it appears that the majority of Bitcoin users are now aware of this fact. I still personally believe that Bitcoin isn't really meant for a micro transaction currency, and will be used mostly for moving high amounts eventually.
4480  Other / Meta / Re: Have a whole forum for the Satoshi topics on: June 25, 2019, 04:05:05 PM
Anything more than that and you are already in spam territory if the subject matter is as typical as "will price reach n" or "is satoshi x"
I'd generally agree that the Bitcoin Discussion section is in need of some TLC, but I'm okay with repeated topics as long as they're bringing noteworthy discussion. After all even repeated topics can lead to new insights, and discussions through those that reply. Unfortunately, as you imply the majority of threads over there aren't contributed nothing, but spam posts for users to get their activity up.
