4541  Other / Meta / Re: Stuff the mining boards on: February 15, 2019, 02:06:29 PM
They're also almost certainly a waste of effort, or money at least. If every thread like that stayed on the main mining sub-boards, the information that's actually contemporary/relevant could get drowned out. There's always been someone turning up asking questions they could find the answer to by searching.

That being said, if there are people that want to engage in that kind of thing anyway, maybe a "Mining Newbies" board would be a good idea, although I predict it would turn into a bit of a swamp fairly fast
Although, balancing that very thin line of spam, and constantly asked questions is hard. I don't visit the mining section at all really so I'm just guessing here, but I'm assuming a lot of the mining information in search is somewhat outdated, and because we are in a field of constantly evolving technology then we have got to expect constant questions about difficulty, and the mining hardware suitable to the difficulty.  A newbies section might be a good idea as a child section of mining if these questions become a problem to those that are frequenting the section maybe with some special rules where the thread gets locked upon answers/inactivity.
4542  Other / Meta / Re: Current stance towards automatic service bumping bots? on: February 09, 2019, 10:44:52 PM
I agree with the opinion of Jet Cash.

Imagine that 100-1000 such bots will work at the same time, new offers of services will simply be unnoticed. Maybe you bump topic every 36-48 hours?

unfortunately, forums aren't the best places for selling things especially when a forum is as popular as this one. What we tend to have is that one user will sell a magnitude of different types of goods/services, and have like 5/6 threads all of which they can bump. Possibly limiting the threads they can bump per 24 hours could be an option to look at.
4543  Other / Meta / Re: Why is it so hard to start community projects in the Bitcoin Talk forum. on: February 09, 2019, 10:40:29 PM
Is it any harder than starting community projects elsewhere? I find that its very difficult to pull a group together relating to anything, unless common interests bring them together. You might argue that Bitcoin should be that common interest, but cash or any other system doesn't bring people together, well usually anyway. There's plenty of people on here that have contacted me, and probably several others about starting projects, but honestly its usually a matter of trust, and project vision. A lot of users here like to get reputable members on board for that fact alone, and not because they believe they would be beneficial. Then you have others who are determined to bring projects out by themselves to earn the maximum amount. Honestly, I think generally you need to have the upmost trust in someone to form a community project something which the Bitcoin user base isn't renounced for. Trusting others that is.
4544  Other / Meta / Re: Current stance towards automatic service bumping bots? on: February 07, 2019, 03:51:56 PM
I think this is a bad thing for a number of reasons.

- If the announcer doesn't have enough belief in his product to monitor his replies, then he is unlikely to support the product, and we should ignore it.

Similarly if the announcer doesn't have enough interest in the forum to become an active member, why should we consider his product.

If the thread doesn't get any active replies or comments, then it is unlikely to be of benefit to the members here, so it should be allowed to drop, and leave space for better quality products.

The forum has paid advertising slots, please use those instead of trying to inflict marginal products on the members here without paying for the advertising.

Unfortunately, there are always drawbacks to everything. But, I'll give an example where automatic bumping/posting is useful in the social media world. Certain times are better to post than others depending on your niche, and sometimes you might have other commitments around this time. After market research you might have determined that 1pm is the best to post because people start their lunch break. However, your work starts an hour early, and you don't get the time to post. Its the same thing here in that automatic bumps around less busy times so it doesn't get buried on the forum can actually bring in a little more business, at least I think my logic is sound there without having trying it myself.  As long as it doesn't break the limit rate theymos has implemented, and the 24 hour bump rule I think its fine. Although, old bumps should ideally be deleted.
4545  Other / Meta / Re: Seeking reporter badge images on: February 07, 2019, 03:47:43 PM
Sounds sad but I’m looking forward to this being implemented. Shame it’s quite far down in theymos’s to do list.

That's what happens when you come across unexpected issues especially due to it being novelty. I'm not sure what is above it on his list so I'm intrigued to find out what those are! Hopefully, the Bitcointalk guides/youtube channel. That would be interesting. I'm not sure about the youtube channel just yet but it would still be somewhat intriguing.
4546  Other / Meta / Re: Limit in feedback leaving text? on: February 05, 2019, 01:20:55 PM
I find it's so much easier and doesn't need to be discussed more, as a feedback is not a telling-story when you can provide evidences in reference link.
Exactly, for more information, and details about why the feedback was left will ideally be located in the reference. We don't want wall of text's on users profiles, because it draws attention from other smaller feedback left. If someone really cares about researching someones trust then they will go, and look at the reference included.
4547  Other / Meta / Re: Improve draft feature, seriously! on: January 27, 2019, 11:51:26 AM
Not my style. Writing for me is not such a 'cold' process. I need to feel the temp and the atmosphere I use word processors for writing articles not forum posts, it just doesn't work for me. Additionally I use a lot of formatting features, I mean a LOT.

As of what is naive I think implementing a feature in the most trivial and lazy way is naive. Once you are ready to allocate 100 post space for drafting you need to define and implement it better than what is done here:
"Push either preview or post buttons and I'll push some garbage on the pile of other garbages for you and it is called drafting in my dictionary"
Lame!

I understand your frustration, and sure it could be easy to implement something like this. However, throughout life you should never rely on a third party. Take a leaf out of Bitcoin's book! You can still write it here on the forum, but just make your own backups periodically. Maybe, with long posts change up your style, and format after to make it easier. It's much easier than losing all of that work, and having to redo it all.
4548  Economy / Reputation / Re: LoyceV vs DdmrDdmr (and get your own Merit graph: up to 10 users per graph) on: January 19, 2019, 02:23:22 PM
Pitting the top 10 or top 50 if it's not too much trouble! Against each other from Vod's most recognized users on Bitcointalk would be interesting. A few of his reports would be interesting to compare, actually.
4549  Other / Meta / Re: I am confused by that mistake on: January 17, 2019, 03:08:36 AM
1. If a member makes a mistake in commenting, the admin must notify them that their comments are wrong.
Not really. It's down to the forum user to assure that they are following the forums guidelines. If you have had replies deleted then that's your warning, and the text is quoted for you to work out why it has been deleted. If you can't work it out you can always politely ask a staff member via personal messages.

2. If a member is blocked, then the admin must be active to notify that member errors must be calculated and served.
Not sure what you're trying to get at, but I'm assuming you've been banned, and you've had no answer back? If that's the case then the admins aren't required to answer you back. Staff members are basically volunteers, and haven't got a 24/7 customer service like businesses do.

3. If the admin suspects that a member has two accounts, the admin must block one of their accounts.
No. Multiple accounts are allowed.

4. If the member is wrong, type one paragraph for comments, the admin must notify members.
Again, not entirely sure what you're trying to say here. However, if a user is spamming or posting low quality replies they're usually deleted, and a automatic reply via personal messages will be sent telling you that the message has been deleted, and have the quoted text. That's the notification.

From the question of my point above, whether the forum is hard or good, the admin must serve the forum members well, if there are complaints, the admin must be ready to serve.
All forums that have members certainly have errors, but errors are often reminded and given an error message.
Admin and members are also people who never forget mistakes, everyone must have a mistake, but their mistakes can be solved with a cold heart.
I am a member, sending messages via email has not received a response from the admin, I think the admin is a very arrogant person, not serving Members with cold hearts, is this what the forum says?
Admin must serve member complaints if they have such a big mistake.
Admins probably do forget mistakes. I mean we all do, however if you've broken a rule multiple times then of course they are going to take past offenses into consideration. I see you haven't received an email back; What is it that you are emailing about? A banned account?

My account was blocked once in a comment reply. But there is no notification, usually the error comment is deleted.
If you've lost a reply because of an error when posting you can find it in your drafts. If you've been banned after posting one message it was likely for plagiarism which you're unlikely to get unbanned.
4550  Other / Meta / Re: grin is now accepted for forum payments on: January 17, 2019, 03:00:44 AM
Nooo! This is only going to drive prices up when it comes to trading Grin! Interesting to see you implement it so early on despite still having concerns for the future of Grin.
4551  Other / Meta / Re: Just found spam bot on: January 16, 2019, 05:16:12 PM
Most have been dealt with, and there's  been a few others which I'm keeping an eye out for. One of the users with more than 28 activity have been reported to higher ups. I'll be keeping an eye out for the other one as it seems like it may of been a one off, compared to the others that keep on spamming it. Thanks.
4552  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: How Do You Monetize A Site Like This? on: January 16, 2019, 01:39:24 AM
First of all, build your content, and establish a good reputation. Then you'll find that businesses will be willing to sponsor the website, and advertise on there. However, before that you'll need to be generating good enough traffic to the site, organically. You would need to take a look at each of these businesses, and decide which ones you'd like to add to your advertisement slots.

However, ICO's probably aren't a good advertisement model due to the conflict of interest. If you want to help the community, and not simply earn off an informative site keep the conflict of interest down to a minimum.
4553  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Source Message on: January 16, 2019, 01:35:07 AM
When I try to find good posts in sections like Bitcoin Discussion or Economics, it's really tough.  The sad fact is that most people just write one line responses to the thread's title, usually in terrible English, and often it's the more senior members who write the thoughtful posts--I see it again and again.  But hey, glad you came by to voice your opinion which I considered thoughtful and thus (in my eyes) worthy of some merit.  Everyone has their own standards.

Which is actually odd. You would think that the Economics section in particular would be a great place for in depth analysis, and discussion relating to that. I believe Bitcoin Discussion is one of the most merited areas of the forum from memory. However, I can't be sure about the Economics section. New members will always have their facts skewed, and some of their knowledge mixed up. That's natural, and we've all been through it. But, we should also be looking for members who start great discussion. Of course, it needs to somewhat constructive, and not just a simple question that triggers the discussion.
4554  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Source Message on: January 16, 2019, 01:17:45 AM
My point is here are two well respected members telling other people how to think and act..   I am not sure it could be more of an anti-thesis of what bitcoin is all about if it tried. The merit system has to be more than just rewarding the same 1% of people who make quality post's. This is a subjective proposition that has to be intuited at the users discretion. It has to be a way to engage and draw new participation or we will end up in a very small echo chamber. It's to the point that I almost refuse to merit legendary members at all unless it is truly profound or cutting edge. I try and bestow what little merit I gain to newbies trying to gain a foothold so as to entice more participation as a whole or to member who I feel are close to ranking up a level.

I think Globbo's point was to reward and encourage decency and politeness...plain and simple. That seems admirable and a good use case for merits if I have ever heard one.
This is where me, and you disagree completely. I don't care who I send merits too, as long as their post is deserving. I don't factor in trust or any other outside factors other than the post that I'm looking at. Does this user normally make good posts? If so I might go, and look at some of their others, and merit them individually. But, I won't let that stop me meriting a user 1, 2 or 10 times in a row. I don't care about the 1% mentality, but I do appreciate those that take the time to look for unrecognized posters among the community. The fact is there are some exceptional posters within this forum, and they deserve as much recognition as others. What I don't agree with is rewarding members for being polite. That's ridiculous from my point of view. However, I do agree that's nice to merit those who don't get merit often, but I'll only do that if their post is up to standard. I think it's true that a lot of the merit is recycled between the same members, but you know why? Because they're constantly putting out good content that deserves merit. I don't have a problem with that. However, having said that what other users do with their merit is up to them. They don't need to look for verification or approval. They can come up with their own guidelines, and use their own initiative when giving it out. I also don't have a problem with that.

Globbo's motive might be generous, and admirable. However, that doesn't mean anyone else has to agree. If he is a merit source then he can wait for his merit to replenish like the rest of us merit sources. However, asking for merit to distribute themselves when its not even to good quality posts isn't something I'd expect from anyone. Sure, good quality posts are subjective, but I think most would agree that some of the posts are low quality content at best.
4555  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Where to spot the opportunities like that on: January 15, 2019, 03:02:01 AM
Spotting opportunities takes a little trial, error, and risk. Always some sort of risk involved when investing in something as you well know. However, it comes to something as simple as Supply and Demand.  If there's demand for it, it will be worth something to someone. How much that is really does depend on the amount of demand there is for it. Water for example, is a good investment due to the human race not being able to supply without it. Bitcoin is a good investment because of many different reasons, but for mainstream attention? Because, people will get sick of the control that the banks have with your money.

Has anyone considered investing in clean water? Is there a market for that? We are polluting and destroying our world every day. What if in 10-20 years we will have a shortage of drinkable water?!

The water industry is a multi billion pound market. Most countries don't even own their water sources, and foreign countries such as China, and Spain own them. I don't know the calculations on shortage of drinkable water, but when you consider that a lot of the world currently doesn't have potable water its a good investment. Even well developed countries don't have the safest practices. United Kingdom, and USA inject chlorine into the water supply at high strengths, and then later flush it out. Depending on the countries regulations I know that the United Kingdom have various different ones. Wales, for example injects chlorine at a specific strength (which I can't remember right now...) and then they flush it through 16 hours later, take a sample, and see if its all within the right parameters. They do this for each leg of the water main. Reservoirs, and treatment plants are also sampled every week or two. As far as I remember out of the UK only Wales own their water. English water is owned by a foreign country. Hence "Welsh Water" being the water board. I might be wrong on English water/Scottish water. But, I'm fairly sure. Wales also doesn't have fluoride within the water supply due to complaints in the late 90s about eroding of teeth. I'm not sure what the investigation involved, but I believe it was removed up until recently it may have been reintroduced, but I'm not sure. Of course, we know that Fluoride is actually beneficial to the teeth within moderation hence the reason USA uses it. However, there are certain demographics which are fighting for it to be removed. What I'm trying to get at here is that its not as simple as letting the mountains filter your water for you. There's a huge investment within the water industry to assure that its safe for its consumers. But, also how it ties into other areas of life like health (teeth).

In fact, water is so important that surrounding countries buy water supplies off other countries. England pays millions of pounds per year for Scotland, and Welsh water to be piped miles down into their land. That has to be regularly maintained, and checked. I'm unsure what regulation it comes under though.
4556  Other / Serious discussion / Re: On altcoins announcements on: January 15, 2019, 02:54:46 AM
I would wager that most altcoins in the section are released by the same people, using a different name, different team, and different bullshit. They are almost carbon copies of one another, and even have some of the same accounts bumping their threads up with low ranked accounts. Obviously, I haven't got the time to investigate each one, and format it, and let the community know, but some users have waded into the depths of shit that is the altcoin world. The section is still completely overrun with shit projects despite the communities best efforts to let the public know. There are only a couple of altcoins that I would consider "interesting" within the last year or so. I could probably count them on my hand from the last two years. Most of the announcements that you look at within that section are fueled mainly on hype, and have no real potential. It's a marketing game. Those who are good at marketing their shitcoin will profit, and cause false hype which will in turn earn some users money. A lot of users will unfortunately lose a lot of their investment too once it crashes. Don't even get me started on the spam problem there. Take a look at Howeycoins, and learn to identify the shit ones, and you can ignore most of that section.
4557  Other / Meta / Re: Lack of activity by a local moderator - basis for promotion of a different user? on: January 15, 2019, 02:40:48 AM
Basis of promotion of a different user? Having reports in that section that do not get handled, regularly. That's likely the main factor that theymos considers when selecting a staff member for local sections as he has stated several times when asked to promote someone in local sections that there aren't enough reports/reporters. You can have a local election, and when there's a increase in reports, and enough to justify a moderator theymos might look at it.
4558  Other / Meta / Re: CENSORED FORUM, ANYTHING NEGATIVE on: January 15, 2019, 02:38:17 AM
You'll find that there's quite a few users here who are openly against Bitcoin, and related technologies. You aren't the only one, and as long as the post is constructive, and on topic it won't be removed. We don't really care what your opinion on cryptocurrencies is from a moderation view point.
4559  Other / Meta / Re: Transparent Polls.... Why no option for this? Why are all polls anonymous? on: January 15, 2019, 02:35:03 AM
Public voting systems are generally bad in my opinion. Even if you don't care that people know what you are voting you will likely take into consideration what others might think of you even subconsciously. Which could actually reflect on the voting result negatively. By having anonymous votes it allows you to use your initiative without worrying what others might think of that. If you want your voice to be heard then you can always have a discussion within the thread. However, I would vote in favour of keeping all votes anonymous.

Also, bare in mind how much of a headache it would be to display hundreds of individual voters, and what they voted.
4560  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cloudbet's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: January 15, 2019, 01:11:21 AM
Alright, I missed the Liverpool, and Man City games. So, anyone willing to pitch in with their verdict? I know Liverpool only won by 1-0, and that was a penalty, but did they deserve it? Should they have won by more? Man City won pretty convincingly, and I'm sure it was utter domination from their part. Although, I think there was a own goal if I'm not mistaken?
