641  Other / Off-topic / Re: Your biggest mistake ! on: November 20, 2016, 08:16:34 PM
Disregarding Bitcoin when I first heard about it. To my defense, it's wasn't nicely presented to me, unfortunately Cheesy
642  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can't we all just get along? on: November 20, 2016, 06:58:46 PM
By 'get along', I mean both exist at the same time together.  A fork is good.  Those who seek to prevent a fork are removing the most important tool of bitcoin - the ability to arrive at a concensus regarding a better system.

two networks, two chains is precisely what I propose.  Let's do BU and SegWit at the same time.  Get 50% of mining working on each.  Then, let free markets pull miners to the 'other' chain in time as they make their bets on which will be most successful in the future.  All we really need is about 25% or more of mining power to go to the minority fork prong - and then BAM! the experiment is on.  May the best man win.  This is good for bitcoin - bad for BlockStream.

Yes, a fork is good, depending on what kind of fork it is.

So let's do this two forks/chains/coins thing. How will services decide on what to use? If they use both, will you pay for the extra infrastructure needed to operate servers with both blockchains and integrate the new one on these services? I'm talking about exchanges, online wallets, online stores, gambling websites, etc.

How are you going to convince miners spliting hashrates evenly? That's probably even harder than getting some services to use both chains, as there's no guarantee of breaking even if miners change chains (and there you have an example of a fork that can be perceived as bad).

This is bad for Bitcoin. This will create chaos. We cannot at any given point say "let's start both these systems with even force and see who wins". It's impossible to reach an equilibrium that allows us to do that. We have to build upon what we have and see if whatever is introduced is strong enough to win and become Bitcoin.
643  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can't we all just get along? on: November 20, 2016, 06:33:55 PM
OP, are you suggesting we have two clients, two networks, two chains live, at the same time? Are you aware that what you're suggesting is the chaos you've set out to prevent in the beginning of your post? That's not getting along.
644  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I need a better cheap solution to a paper wallet on: November 20, 2016, 03:47:38 PM
adaseb: yes, that's still a safe method, although a bit too much for my taste.

To the OP: you can have your own hardware wallet without spending a dime on hardware. If you want to have new hardware you can also buy some kind of cheap ARM computer such as a Raspberry. Tutorials have been listed above (the one from Electrum is quite good), but you can do it anyway you want it (and any way that suits your preferences better), you simply have to avoid connecting your offline wallet to the network.
645  Other / Archival / Re: Do you think people is interested in bitcoin if they know it's profitable? on: November 20, 2016, 03:37:45 PM
Yes, it's what interests most people and it's what gets them here for the most part. I was partially attracted by this, but ended up staying for other reasons. As far as my experience goes, the best way to talk about Bitcoin to others is saying "I made a bit of money there" and then go on explaining about financial freedom and privacy. If you first talk profit, people will listen to you better even if you talk about the "boring" stuff such as the network and protocol itself and the blockchain... So yes, people are definitely most interested (at least initially) in the part where you can profit.
646  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Korea, Dubai Move to Regulate Bitcoin on: November 20, 2016, 03:33:49 PM
I am normally against regulations of this kind as governments and authorities tend to try and subvert things by regulating them in their favor. Regulating Bitcoin is impossible per se, but governments can regulate things in order to at least delay or hinder Bitcoin adoption. We have to expect the worst out of these things, so I'm not sure this is good news. We'll see it when proper regulations are proposed... Similar happened in the EU and they ended up delaying decisions and regulating nothing, which I hope it will be the case here.

Governments could regulate in order to help adoption, but I don't think that will happen.
647  Other / Meta / Re: New Global Moderator Election [Discussion] on: November 20, 2016, 01:34:00 PM
This election is much needed. Even if it may not result in someone being elected/chosen by theymos, this is a nice experiment, as it was said previously, and just shows that many people feel the same way: we need more active people fighting spam on the forums.

I do my best to report everything and I think I do a relatively nice job reporting whatever is wrong, but we need moderation to keep up with all the reports that exist and act on them (I imagine that there are many due to the spam around here). Some posts are reported but they stay there for a long, long time, unattended. I think this is a clear sign that we need more moderation, or at least more patrollers.

Already voted and I'll keep reporting whatever I see wrong, as usual.
648  Other / New forum software / Re: Next beta phase on: November 20, 2016, 01:14:13 PM
~Snipped~
There should be an initial transitioning period soon, correct.
I guess that would answer the question. I think the next phase would be the migration procedure itself (resetting passwords by emails and etc...)

Good, can't wait for the migration!

If they published this news, it means the new forum is almost done and most of us obviously use working emails.
Just hope multiple account user for signature campaign/sell still have their working emails  Tongue

Maybe we can expect better security such as 2FA and working secret question.

I'm willing to bet the opposite, most accounts do not have working emails, thus the warning...

Better security will most likely be present, this is the Bitcoin Forum after all... Smiley

650  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: New Client Proposal: Bitcoin Core++ on: November 18, 2016, 03:25:08 PM
People converging into one client that satisfies most is the key of what we want. Another clients would only add to the confusion, I think, for reasons already listed. Threads about "client X vs client Y" would emerge again...

I think this is the opposite of what we want with Bitcoin.
651  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 16,000,000 BTC will have been mined in a few days on: November 18, 2016, 01:37:45 PM
Crazy to see that there are already ~70% BTC mined and we're still in the beginning of this journey... I guess we now have another excuse to have a party, maybe haha Smiley

It is also crazy to see that while over 70% BTC is already mined, most people in this world never even heard about Bitcoin. It's impossible to comprehend this fact hanging out on this forum but this is a fact.  I keep being surprized meeting highly educated people who are saying something like "Bitcoin? Sounds familiar. Is it sort of a webmoney for criminal world?"

Also true... Let's hope awareness increases with each Bitcoin mined in the next few years Smiley
652  Other / Meta / Re: What's your "Report to Moderator" % rate at? on: November 18, 2016, 01:33:02 PM
Curiously I was questioning myself during this week what's the status on report count and % on the top 50, and this thread appeared on my Watchlist now. Would be interesting if this info got released periodically, say, every half a year Smiley

654  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCoin Friendly Countries on: November 18, 2016, 01:11:30 PM
This is a good place to start reading about Bitcoin legality in the world. CoinMap is a good place to start reading about where Bitcoin is accepted, but it has been posted already. I don't think that there are much more resources beyond this.
655  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: India is Paying $900+ for Bitcoin Amid Cash Crisis on: November 18, 2016, 01:09:34 PM
We've seen a few threads around this subject, looks like Bitcoin is gaining some traction there or speculators are doing this due to the "extinction" of big bank notes...
656  Other / New forum software / Next beta phase on: November 18, 2016, 01:05:15 PM
The news section states the following:

News: To be able to use the next phase of the beta forum software, please ensure that your email address is correct/functional.

What is this next phase? Is everything ready for migration?
657  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin-qt wallet crashes twice a month, database corrupted on: November 17, 2016, 02:35:39 PM
All right, so I guess the network isn't the issue. I asked because from my experience, even machines with quite a bit of RAM tend to see bitcoind crashing due to too many connections filling up all the RAM.
658  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: SegWit, are we sure about this? on: November 17, 2016, 02:30:50 PM
I was just requested by my mobile client's automatic fee calculation to spend 17 cents as fee to have my transaction included in the next block. I hope OP is transacting now and is thanking for the creation of SegWit Cheesy And we aren't even too congestioned.
659  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: crypto currencies on: November 17, 2016, 02:20:47 PM
LTC, ETH, XMR, XRP and DASH, maybe. Btw, this isn't tech discussion. This should maybe go on Off-topic or Altcoins...
660  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain wallet will allow credit and debit card funding on: November 16, 2016, 05:56:58 PM
Pretty much whatever makes adoption rates bigger and makes it easier for people to buy Bitcoin is a good thing. Now it will depend on fees... Something tells me they won't be light, but we'll see. Still an easy and quick way for people to buy Bitcoins (with the lack of anonymity associated with it, but that's for each one of us to consider).
