1581  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should Paul Vernon take a lie detector test? on: January 18, 2016, 05:48:58 PM
Whatever he does now regarding transparency is completely irrelevant, he should just refund his customers, period. No one is really going to forgive him or trust him for further business, neither anyone who left coins there will forgive himself.
1582  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Breaking: CNBC - Banking syndicate has been organized to TAKE OVER Bitcoin! on: January 18, 2016, 05:04:09 PM
Well, they can develop whatever they want, nobody will even touch it with a stick. Probably only banks and those who are affiliated with them would use such a centralized currency.

Also, this has nothing to do with Bitcoin, Core, XT, Unlimited, Classic or any other Bitcoin implementation or any altcoin, for that matter, this is about a centralized currency backed by banks which has a blockchain that can be run privately.

This is why I recommend getting something like an Intel NUC dedicated to bitcoin.

Put Linux on it, and do not run any browser plugins or extensions, and do not use Chrome for Linux (it is closed source) on it.

Such a PC should only be used for your bitcoin activity, not general browsing. Not even browsing this forum. Just use it for bitcoin.

You can run a wallet on your normal PC just like you can keep some fiat cash in your leather wallet, but keep the value low.

btw flash (even in Chrome) is dangerous because flash allows programs loaded from web pages to manipulate the clipboard. Get rid of flash even on computers that you don't use with bitcoin.

That seems to be a bit overkill. Basic security is enough for average quantities of Bitcoin. Even if you don't have any Bitcoin on your computer at all, the issue that the OP is talking about could happen too.

The cheapest Intel NUC seems to be at 99$, as per their website. For that price I'd think in buying a Trezor (which still doesn't avoid the issue OP talked about, but can keep your Bitcoins secure while being able to spend them on an online computer)

You don't necessarily need a new computer for offline cold storage, you can use an old one, your usual computer with a different disk or in live mode. There's also ledger and Raspberry's/Banana Pi/ODROID, etc.
1584  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can you run a Node with an dynamic IP adress? on: January 17, 2016, 12:14:38 AM
Yes, why wouldn't you be able to?

Bandwidth limitation is not a problem, it just helps to have good bandwidth. Your bad bandwidth is worse for mining than for running a node.
1585  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I feel pity for Mike Hearn on: January 17, 2016, 12:04:15 AM
I too feel a bit sorry for Mike Hearn after reading his write up on the current state of affairs. He is quite right and on the spot on most of his post and one can clearly see he wanted to change something and leave a dent on Bitcoin for the better and that this talk and all of the disregard for a block size increase made him tired.

I think he did well on going away, sad to see he didn't have much of a chance.

Have you just popped out from under a rock? Hearn wanted to subvert an entire Country by checkpointing blocks!

Sinister plan of subversion >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB9goUDBAR0

He was definitely out of tune with that one, but I do think that motivating block size discussion was more relevant than some of the crap he put out after starting the fire.

It's not easy to be in a team, trying to push a change you truly believe in and you are sure that will be a good contribution and being constantly thrown out and dragged down.

A nice way to waste money, I guess Cheesy
1587  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: How will Blockstream/Core Be Remembered? on: January 16, 2016, 11:49:17 PM
In my opinion, this bitcoin classic thing is a horrible idea.

We just need core to roll out either 2MB or 4MB blocks and be done with all this nonsense.

Not sure what part you don't understand.

Not sure what part of "it would be even better if Core had changes similar to Classic straight out of the box" you don't understand Cheesy

1589  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did you have your paper wallet in printed form with you? on: January 16, 2016, 11:43:04 PM
Is this the safest way to store coin, as i think so.

This depends almost solely on your safety practices, not much on the storing method...

my paper wallet was from a live machine, printed off and no problems. im not confident that btc is widespread enough to have a common trojan targetting btc paper wallets.

First step to have issues, although I hope you don't have any.
1590  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Brian Armstrong of Banker-Owned Coinbase Says we need a "FOR PROFIT" fork? on: January 16, 2016, 11:39:14 PM
If altcoins and "pump'n'dumps" are "legit" ways to make a load of cash, then this could be considered one of those ways too... lol.
1591  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Bitcoin client are you going to be using? on: January 16, 2016, 05:10:19 PM
I'm also a bit confused and just now starting to know a bit better all of these clients. Voted Classic on the pool because it is the one that looks to be more balanced towards a block size increase as of now, but I've had Core and XT nodes and use both regularly.

Let's see how this plays out, I just hope changes get merged into Core eventually.
1592  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Russians Can Pay Internet and Phone Bills with Bitcoin without Fees on: January 14, 2016, 02:13:40 PM
I guess it takes big balls for big companies to accept Bitcoin in a country such as Russia... This is the way to go, this will definitely make haters think of Bitcoin differently especially in Russia.

That being said, wish my ISP accepted Bitcoin Cheesy
1593  Other / Off-topic / Re: bitcoin and the NSA.. yea yea.. i know.. but hold on a sec on: January 12, 2016, 07:28:32 PM
I think this quote fits this thread perfectly well

Every step of the way everything possible was done to ensure that Bitcoin was secure.  For example Bitcoin is one of the only systems in existence that uses the secp256k1 curve instead of the secp256r1 curve that is used by almost everyone else.  But this was a very wise decision in light of recent leaks about the NSA and their underhanded practices with respect to the cryptography they produce or help produce.

secp256r1 was designed by the NSA, secp256k1 was not.

There's also this thread on the subject
1594  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How i restore my wallet with seed in other wallet ? on: January 12, 2016, 07:19:55 PM
Apparently no other wallet is compatible with Electrum seeds. Install Electrum on another device and restore.

Credits for that list here
1595  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: [ANN] breadwallet, first bitcoin network client for iOS, first BIP32 SPV client on: January 12, 2016, 02:30:20 PM
I'm trying to restore my breadwallet wallet on MultiBit HD, since it's now compatible... But I'm having some issues. MultiBit asks for a "timestamp". What timestamp should it be?

I assume that's referring to the timestamp the wallet was created. You can specify any date date older than that and it will only affect the initial syncing time.

It is referring to that, but the format that MultiBit HD expects isn't at all obvious.

Quote
A seed timestamp is the number of days elapsed since Bitcoin genesis block with a modulo 97 checksum appended.
This gives a short representation that avoids user error during input and works in all locales.

Here's a short Python one line script which creates such a timestamp, but be sure to estimate your wallet creation date on the older side when asked for it.

Code:
python -c "from datetime import *;r=lambda s:int(raw_input(s));d=((date(r('Year: '),r('Month: '),r('Day: '))-date(2009,1,3))).days;print '{}/{}'.format(d,d%97)"

If you don't already have Python installed, just visit here and press the run button: http://repl.it/mHe

It's been a love hate relationship with Breadwallet and unconfirmed transactions.    This helped me get my Breadwallet into Multibit.

Seems like transactions get stuck unconfirmed, and I end up having to remove and reinstall the iOS App, for things to work again.  Now that I have Multibit as a backup, at least now I won't have to worry about my coins getting stuck.

Pretty odd that you're all having such issues, never seen them. Maybe a hidden bug? Pretty sure our dev is on it...

To import a seed to MultiBit one just has to install MultiBit, import the seed and put any timestamp on it... You'll see your funds there. You only need a precise timestamp if you need to sign a message from an old address, as far as I've seen.

No, you need the redeem script to spend the coins.
1597  Economy / Services / Re: [BIT-X.com] Earn Bitcoins by Posting | Signature Campaign on: January 10, 2016, 02:03:25 PM
Still missing about 0.01 from last payment and the total 0.0112 from yesterday's payment.
1598  Economy / Investor-based games / Re: Any Bsave.io savers around here? on: January 06, 2016, 06:02:55 PM
Supposedly you can connect your Coinbase account and start earning interest (currently 3.6%) on your stagnant bitcoins...

Interest on my Bitcoins? Well, if they're on an exchange they're not really mine Cheesy

No way... Very skeptical with all of this.
1599  Other / Off-topic / Re: I Order the Fed and US Military to stop their covert operations against Bitcoin on: January 06, 2016, 05:47:58 PM
A quote from someone who knows a thing or two...

Homeland Security is watching this site and they have homeland security agents, confidential informants and cooperating witnesses monitoring and posting to this site.  That is a fact.

Many of my posts and many posts in discussions I had on this forum were placed into evidence against me before I was arrested.

I couldn't give a fuck if they do or not. I'm not doing anything wrong either way, they can knock on my door anytime they want.
Big talk.  Be careful what you wish for.
