Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: send BTC is very slow...

That's just the way it is... Your file is huge. Time for a new one (or a bigger machine... although the software might not be able to handle such a large file even with big resources.) An example on wallet.dat size impact... I don't know how you are patient to sync it (or maybe you have it on 24/7) Lets see: | | | ~size | | | #TX | fresh | | | 96KB | | | 0 | regular | | | 2MB | | | ~300 | spam[1] | | | 421MB | | | 195508 |
[1] its the ~100 leaked private keys related to the spam attack. I opened and resynced it just for this thread which took me ~7 hours. Bitcoin core acts very slow with such a big wallet file. It was ~110 MB before opening it, most of the time was resyncing.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core vs. Bitcoin Classic

Changelog? I don't see why their node count had a bump... Maybe nodes of their own? Just someone setting up many? Or maybe just lack of updates on XT and users switching from XT to Classic (seems to kind of be the case if we look at the charts) I'll definitely switch if they can deploy and have their changes running in the network faster than Core They still say their releases are experimental and not suitable for mining...

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Putin Advisor: Accepting Bitcoin Payments in Russia is a Crime
|
on: February 06, 2016, 05:30:51 PM

Recently appointed Internet advisor German Klimenko [...] the acceptance of bitcoin payments constitutes a crime. So does facilitating access to pirated content in certain countries, something this newly appointed Internet advisor did even after he was appointed and only stopped doing so when this was discovered, transferring his torrent websites to his son. Someone is either paid really well or not aware of laws, copyright or what's normally considered to be accepted or not. Klimenko has notably spoken out about regulating the Internet in the past. Interesting. [...] the presidential advisor believes that the Internet needs more regulation because "the Internet is flooded with money, and criminals and terrorists". So are the streets of Russia and everywhere else in the world. Control criminal activities outside the internet, and criminals using the Internet will not exist... These statements are wrong on so many levels... I question myself if these advisors are paid to indeed advise and speak about what they think or if they're just paid to appear on media and transmit what President Putin/the Russian government thinks.

Who are they blacklisting exactly and why? I find this rather odd. They may be losing revenue by blacklisting coins or addresses... If this is true they seem to be shooting themselves in their own feet.

Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: iOS Bread Wallet
|
on: February 06, 2016, 12:27:04 AM
|
Is there a way to export private keys from bread wallet. My friend has bread wallet on his iPhone and he's got a couple transactions that have been stuck for 4 days now. They've been deducted from his balance but they never turned up on the blockchain. So he can't spend those coins and he's doesn't want to try sending the rest to another client since they'll probably just get stuck too. So is there a way to get the private keys out of there? He has his 12-word master seed. I tried using this app from github but it doesn't seem to be working: https://dcpos.github.io/bip39/No way to extract private keys through the app. Add the seed on Multibit HD and extract the keys.

Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Build small Mining for experience BTC

Hi folks, I would like to dig deeper in Bitcoin and all the technical aspects and I would like to start a little bit mining. I know that I will be never profitable but its not about that. I just would like to experience it and do something practical except of sending bitcoins around I know that I Need a raspberry-pi and I have found two on Amazon: Raspberry Pi 2 - 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU, 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM, complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1 (39 Euro) & Raspberry Pi Model B+ Mainboard (GPIO polig, MicroSD Speicherkartenslot, HDMI, 4x USB 2.0) (32 Euro) What else do I need? Thank you very much for every little help You need a PSU for the RPi. I'd advise you to get a 5V 2A one (although you're probably fine with a 5V 1.2A one if you're only mining). You can find those in any stores selling Pi-related stuff (many accept Bitcoin). You also need an SD card. If it's for mining only you'd be fine with an 8GB one. You're probably also going to need a USB Hub for the miners, depending on how many you want to connect, and cables for them. Then you need software and that's pretty much it. Have a look at Minera.

Interesting thread. We might be able to achieve a kind of "conductive wire" of ideas with this chronological ordering of threads about block size and related issues. It will be interesting when this is all over to go back and see how people's minds and ideas developed throughout this "Great Schism", as OP calls it I'd like to contribute: this was one of my favorite threads.

Although you had a bit of a rough start (and I haven't seen reviews) I'm still pretty curious of what comes out of this... You seem to be updating your iOS app, and other options for iOS are more expensive at the moment... I'd love to try and review this wallet. let's see what happens in March

Rumor on the streets is many executives at banks and trading firms are indeed personally buying btc in secret.
That's at a personal level... Fine by me, as long as they're not buying in the name of the companies or government they work for. They're as much of an user as us, and if they're buying into Bitcoin they want it to succeed as much as we do. There could be a referendum or a ballot and then they would have to at least consider it and a talk about it. The Swiss voted on not increasing the gold reserves last time I remember. I am not suggesting it is likely to happen anytime soon with Bitcoin but it might some time later, perhaps. Who knows how will things play out.
Just thinking about it makes me uncomfortable... Governments should stay put with Bitcoin.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Raspberry Pi 2 Node
|
on: February 04, 2016, 10:59:42 PM

That would be really cool, but probably not really cost-effective Is there any reason one could not run a full bitcoin node on a Raspberry Pi 2? I see these are very cheap now, just $37. Add a 32GB SD card and you have a fully functioning node right?
Not a chance. I tried that last summer while the blockchain was still less than 40GB and after a month it still had not synched and burned out the usb storage, presumably from too many rw cycles while doing the rather busy -reindex. Now on my other computer my /.bitcoin/ is >67GB and still growing. Feb 2016 specs for a full node; minimum: >=2GHz x 4core cpu such as an intel i5 >=2GB RAM >=80 GB HDD presently used and sure to grow recommended: >=4GB RAM >=160 GB HDD preferably SSD for speed and rw What does work with a raspberry pi is - electrum bitcoin wallet - various altcoin full nodes Well, if you check this thread and feedback online you can see one can indeed run a Bitcoin node on a Raspberry Pi 2. Definitely not the most powerful node, but it works.

Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Concerns with Armory

BitGo seems to not have anything to do with Armory except the fact it's a Bitcoin wallet... So it isn't really a fair comparison and you'd be going from riding a Ferrari to having a beaten up Fiat, I think. If you want to switch software to something at least a bit similar, either keep using Core (in standalone) or Electrum.
That being said, the current version of Armory will still work in near future and a new version is being prepared by someone who has been connected to Armory development for quite some time.

I get away from the forums for a bit of time and this happens... Pretty sad to see so many complications surrounding my favorite desktop and Cold Storage client. I'd like to wish etotheipi all of the best and I hope to see him back to Armory development soon. I guess the lack of updates predicted something bad was happening at Armory. I guess Armory is a great idea that is turning into reality too soon for the general public/companies. Anyways, good to see someone taking up development on their own! I'd like to wish goatpig all of the best in developing this, hopefully without too many licensing complications which may unfortunately hinder development... We'll see what the future has in store. I'd also like to say I am available to contribute with funds for further development, if needed. I don't have much, but if every user contributes a bit, we can make things happen. Beyond this, I have no help to offer. No code talents, neither a licensing whiz either (Thanks for everyone leaving valuable input, pretty interesting to learn about all these licensing issues). I can however help testing further Armory versions, if needed.

Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: iOS Bread Wallet

This is the best cold storage app available for IOS. Use this one on mine mobile phone. Hope they keep improving this nice wallet.
You need to also check out the BitLox hardware wallet. It communicates with either your iPhone or Android using BLE and there are wallet apps for both phones. This is the first bitcoin hardware wallet to work with iPhone. Interesting, although the price is a bit steep. I guess that's what you get when there's no competition. If I'm not mistaken, Ledger was working on something that was iOS compatible too... Let's see what they come up with. EDIT: seems like CoolWallet is around too... But they have no devices avaliable. They're cheaper tho... but had a rough start and no reviews... They'll have more stock in March, I'll be around to check them out. Despite all this, I highly doubt any of these things will work with breadwallet one day and I highly doubt there will be breadwallet hardware breadwallet hardware is the phone itself, I guess...

Yes, many people use that wallet... At least on Android one does. You'd probably be better off searching reviews for Android wallets and running them... It's most likely not the same, but there's a lack os BB OS development (and it will get worse overtime)
