701  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ***** THE ZEROCOIN SOURCE - Truly anonymous coin ***** on: February 27, 2014, 09:23:32 AM
I really hope that the developers of zero coin are intentionally delaying the release of this coin to prevent a harsh crack down from regulators globally.  Bitcoin first needs to hit truly critical mass before this type of heat is brought against the technology.

Right now would be a bad time for launch, I agree. Just look what happened to the huge news of neo/bee launch a few days ago..

702  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The best Bitcoin cold storage? on: February 27, 2014, 09:22:06 AM
Guys, what do you think about buying an android phone with the sole purpose of keeping bitcoins? would that be safe?
One could encrypt the backup folder onto a USB stick or your computer, and keep the phone in cold storage - never mind having a sim card or anything.

would the bitcoin app for Android phones be secure to do this? you could also set a key to unlock your phone.

Android is bad news for malware. Cold storage should be just that: totally offline.
I've experimented with the punches. I modified a python script on mini private keys (google it for the original) to use only caps and numbers. You still get 145 bits of entropy, which is stronger than the original Casascius coins and should do the job fine.
I'd been playing with the idea of coin rings for my wife's Christmas present, so I banged an all-caps mini private key into a 50 eurocent coin (Nordic gold, thick, malleable, hypoallergenic...) and turned it into a ring using a mandrel and hammer. Nice, chunky, manly ring with the code faintly visible on the inside (especially after being given the fire treatment like in Lord of the Rings). The one problem is that anyone who knew that's what it was could steal your coins, but 1) that's true of any form of cold storage, 2) they'd have to know about it, and 3) they'd have to get it off my finger first, and then get to a computer faster than me (I memorised the code for good measure).

I'd love to make these for other people, but haven't figured out a straightforward way of doing it without trust. Unlike Casascius, I'm not prepared to give out my home address in the interests of transparency.

If I ever own enough btc to make it worthwhile, I'll probably experiment with saline etching of stainless steel and bang some more keys into aluminium blocks, like little metal bricks. Reckon you could hide them in stud walls, under floor boards, or wherever - varnish or oil them to make sure there would be no corrosion first if they came into contact with damp.

A riddle:
Why is Charlie Shrem called "four-finger Charlie" by his friends?
All right, that's an easy one ;-)

704  Economy / Speculation / Re: #1 most popular Bitcoin Price Forecasts (+1,492% gains, +750% more than B&H) on: February 25, 2014, 03:01:34 PM

Price movement was all based on gox as i stated a few posts back.  Not forecastable at all.

If gox announced everything was fine in last 10 hours we'd be up @ $700 etc

Newbies wont profit more vs buy & hold from this service.   They cant deny this.

Experienced traders might find it of some use i guess, idk.

Yes, technical analysis won't predict the catalyst, in this case the mtgox-trainwreck. But it did predict the bottom as of now:

This looks all nice and well, but... how do we know you're not a scam?

It does look nice and I think it's worth a try, worst case just 0.3btc lost right?
Let's see when and if the 1 goxbtc arrives Wink

LOL! Says the guy with a brand new account that's just been created for the occasion. Oh boy. This sounds more and more legit by the minute.

Is there some kind of problem with BFX?  Did they not adjust any procedures since the last flash crash where the fiat ran out? How many others had all bids go unfilled as that big dump on Stamp happened today ...?
If you're referring to what happened on Bistamp 1 hour ago, then the only thing that explains that situation is this: only limit orders on Bitstamp can be filled on Bitfinex.  Market orders on Bitstamp will not make it to Bitfinex. So if that was a market order on Bitstamp, limit orders on Bitfinex would not have been matched up with it.

Disclaimer: I may be totally wrong.

I understand it that way that BitFinex orders are only executed against orders in the BitStamp orderbook. BitFinex orders are not entered in the BitStamp orderbook themselves. A sudden drop, like the market sell today on BitStamp, wasn't on the orderbook, so BitFinex users couldn't have bought at $520 either way.
Which makes me sad. But I didn't have "surprise orders" up anyway.

So why should I care about Zercoin that smacks of mainstream establishment development that's probably got more NSA backdoors that Obama's underwear when Darkcoin already exists and doesn't bloat the blockchain?

Because

708  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: February 21, 2014, 07:11:43 PM
Hey everyone. My name's Doug. I work for Armory. (Whoda thunk it, right?) I'm the guy who (hopefully) whipped the OS X build into shape. Please let us know if you have any problems. I think I caught all the little gotchas that had made the code unusable.

There is one small issue some of you may run into. If you compile the code on 10.9 and try to run it on a pre-10.9 system, it probably won't work. I have an idea for a workaround. If it works, cool. If not, I'll keep it in mind as I move forward.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you all moving forward!

A very warm welcome here! You are part of a wonderful team!
I'm not an apple guy myself, but this way more ressources are free for general and linux development :-P

Oktoberfest? Awful idea!
Awful, because Oktoberfest is awful. Awful, because the whole PR effect of the greatest party ever would be totally in the shadow of "a freaky Oktoberfest tent" something.
Also, I want my skyscraper, worldclass-djs and limousine!

BFX BSI is always bullish. Always.

"It's going down? Really? Must be the ticker price or the market that's wrong" says the average BFX trader and buys more bitcoins.

Makes sense. Many, if not most, users use BitFinex to do margin trading. And most of them go long only for opening a position. This, by itself, makes the BSI bullish.
And, why not? Price goes down - buy into a position to profit. Price goes up - hang onto the train and open a long position! :-)

110 is a very strong support line (former top) , should bounces from here.  Next historical support is near  69.

I don't think technical analysis is of any value whatsoever here. This is no real market, this is no real exchange.
And soon no exchange any more at all..

I'm willing to buy up to 1000 BTC worth of goxBTC. Offering 50%.

Another option is that I sent you BTC-E coupons, up to 300k USD.

Minimum: 100 BTC or USD equivalent (I will have to open cold storage so won't bother with less)
I'm still looking to buy 1000 BTC worth of goxBTC, my offer however is now lowered to 25%.
At these rates I start becoming a buyer Smiley So, if anyone wants to sell, happy to buy at 30% at the moment, up to 120 Gox BTC.

Yes, all this is really tempting, and yet so frightening.
I can't be beaten to either buy at 30%, nor to sell at 30% (if I had anything on gox). And I can't stop watching the whole development in horror.
It's like passing a monumental trainwreck, you can't look away.

I wish everyone involved in this a good outcome.

Sorry for the slight threadjack.
I tried to log into my old MtGox account, which I didn't use for a year or something. Username/password not accepted (it was saved in a password db, no typo). No password recovery mail is sent to me neither. I have a yubikey.
A second account doesn't work neither (which I used for creating an API bot), it wasn't used for a year neither.

What's going on here?
I want to export all data, in case I would need it someday. As I believe a total collapse is imminent and my data would then be gone.
No funds in there at least.

Giancarlo and/or Raphael, you announced this a while ago:

We will soon be adding feedback functionality – we want to hear
from you!

How long before that's implemented? I have a list of feedback/suggestions to improve the site.

You can always post it here too. Other users could chime in or explain their view at the points.

Talking of:
Giancarlo, Raphael, did you think about that "Liquidity provider can extend the runtime" functionality?

HAVE OVER 200K USD CASH IN MTGOX,WOULD LIKE TO BUY COINS AT CURRENT PRICE +15%PROFIT TO SOMEONE INTERESTED,JUST DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS A SAFE WAY TO MAKE THE TRANSACTION?IS THERE ANY SUGGESTION?TKS A LOT.
Sure, a newbie with caps on and 200k on gox........

Why not..
You're not even a year here. And noone is here longer than 5 years.
This here seems to be the first place for trading goxxedBTC against realBTC. A lot of users registered just to use this thread here.

Obviously I wouldn't trade large sums without escrow, or would divide it into many small transactions. No matter how long a user was registered here.

you have a point. Still, the caps....

The caps make it slightly more believeable for me ;-)
No scammer would be *that* obvious, not? heh

Will purchase GoxBtc @ 15% above current prices. Have $30k to spend.
IS THERE A SAFE WAY FOR BOTH OF US TO MAKE THE TRADE?TKS

There's https://www.bitcoinbuilder.com/ which needs ID and is down to 0.5 BTC per goxxedBTC.
I'd swap small amounts first, gradually enlarging the sum per transfer.
I am somewhat vary of *any* account here when it's about large amounts. There were "seniors" scamming, even with a big list of positive rep before.

Oh, and please reduce the CAPS.
