LFC_Bitcoin, saving your performance for the big boys and pulling through by the skin of your teeth -- well done! Three penalty shootouts to go, I doubt I'd have made it past Round 1 with my poor show. Dire straits in league and in cup. Wow.

Yes, I'd rather have average players eating their salaries at home than messing things up. Some players in the Chelsea team should be dropped to make room for more experienced players, in my opinion. For example, Broja, Cucurella, and three more.

Absolutely. Hungry academy players are just much more exciting to watch than talented people who clearly have their minds elsewhere. I know practicalities mean a club can't just field kids all the time to "punish" disinterested seniors but fans actually are far more accepting of bad results when effort is apparent. Naive maybe, but that's how I've always felt.

So much for plucky New Zealanders upstaging stars seeing out their twilight years! Champions League offered a starring Belgian side but I didn't take it, shame. Instead, we return to Swiss side Servette who face tricky home opponents Slavia Praha. It's a difficult ask, but I got incredible odds when it touched 10/1, books quickly returned to a more reasonable 65/10 so I think this is very much a value bet.

100 units at Sportsbet on Servette to WIN vs Prague @10.02. Other odds: 6.60. Units advantage: 342
Bet ID: 6570d9c64149c60001de54d3

Running advantage after 47 bets: +4706 (+342)
All-time cumulative: +94,566
Running units after 46 bets (3W|43L): -2412 (-100)
743  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Stablecoins are killing payment systems on: December 14, 2023, 02:48:13 PM
At this rate, in 5 years the whole world will be using stablecoins instead of payment systems.

Nice utopia to dream of, but that feels like an overestimation of a willingness to use something outside of a recognised state-compliant and state-oversight system. It's almost 2024 and I still have to convince colleagues more technologically-dependent and savvy than myself to switch or even consider conventional crypto (Bitcoin) that is secure and free of central influence. Stablecoins, in the crypto sense, still have a lot of ground to cover when they are, still centralised corporate entities without state assurances or oversight.

Barca, laughing stock, simple blip, or the start of a rot? Biggest prize in Pot B, not many took it Wink

Newcastle did themselves proud, they may have ended up exiting but it was a proper fight to the end, didn't lose to PSG, VAR robbed them and they outplayed Milan on the final day. BVB too, not making it easy despite qualifying. Two close results, on another day I would be happy, but such is football.

Lazio the only team to not score tonight.

Results all tallied, please let me know if I made mistakes. Hope you all enjoyed group stages, they will never again appear...

buwaytress I'm very disappointed that you have allowed cro2 to buy you. The snakes are infesting all our boards!!

Boss, everyone's got a price. Afford me and I'm all yours.

When will a team start firing underperforming players instead of the manager?

I guess they cant really do this can they?

The only way that they could get rid of the players that they dont really want is by putting them in the transfer list then hope that another team would bid close to their asking price. For a team like Manchester United, most of their players are pricey and yet some would likely sit through the windows transfer without getting any bid at all. Anyway, Rashford sucks with his attitude on the field by weighing down the team but compared to Sancho then I guess he is in much better position. I can already picture Sancho out for the entire season unless we got more injuries in the future

@navidart : 1-0 for now with 1 different answer. I can turn this around today then hope that we'll proceed to the penalty round  Smiley

Trofo I have asked this question many, many times. But I think it's something about player rights -- employees just like managers but ultimately without the responsibility of performance. To me, though, managers get the sack so players should get the same risk. Unfortunately, you only get the sack as s player if you get convicted of criminal offences.

Best case scenario, you get managers like Klopp who doesn't like discipline problems, then he tells them to go find a new club. Then okay, their agents hunt.

Worst-case scenario? Players get frozen out for not performing, but still draw salaries. What a joke.

Yes you can get them released and pay the cost to build a better squad.

Basiktas released 5 players from the  senior squad for poor performance

But "release" here just means contract ended, not renewed. Liverpool released 11 players last season. Some for performance obviously, but none were sacked.

Edit: I read that article. These players were dropped from squad but still under contract. Like Sancho at United. Not named in squad but still getting paid.
746  Economy / Speculation / Re: So new patterns for BTC fees what do they mean. Does the ½ ing lose its power? on: December 13, 2023, 06:10:56 PM
My regular Joe opinion? Halving won't lose its influence for at least two, three cycles. I still think anything above 1 coin makes a psychological impact -- a bit less once you take price into account.

It has had a waning influence though, I'd say. Just looking at the peaks/throughs in between each cycle. I'm keen to understand how these fees situation looks post-bullrun when ordinals surely run out of steam. I'd predict a positive backlash from peeps returning on-chain.

Why is it always bitcoin? Making the news and headlines look like bitcoin is always used for illegal things, and all of that as if it's the only coin that could be used by criminals and it won't be traced.

It's not always Bitcoin. But perhaps it's a recognition of the fact that Bitcoin is, in fact, the most widely accepted currency in the world. Someone forgot to tell them it's a lot more traceable than regular money though...

You're right of course, this is the typical misleading headline that makes you think this equates Bitcoin to crime. No one demonises the US dollar -- by and large the most popular ransom currency.

Sayonara United. cryptofrka and Hhampuz consolidated their positions. I think Bayern was very smart but I took some risks yet and wait for tomorrow to pay off.

Europa league will have new winner as Sevilla finished last in group. This season they're looking just terrible both in Europe and Spain.

Lots of people fell for Sevilla. I did too before but not this time!

@buwaytress - in retrospective, it's quite a shame you couldn't transfer the 10k rewards money into BTC Grin
I was in support of converting the reward in BTC, it doesn't make sense to keep it in USDT or equivalent. I still can't understand what exactly was in sponsor's mind and how this can be beneficial.

Sponsor made the choice, we expressed a preference but happily accepted the condition, it's really quite straightforward.

Not their reason (we didn't ask) but I understood immediately from my own experience in budgeting and planning that it's a simple case of volatility and accounting, which, like it or not for a corporate entity, needs to be in hard, predictable figures, possibly even in fiat.

An Annual Report of sponsorships would then say: we sponsored $10,000 for this event. That would be true yesterday, today, and 10 years from now. If they'd given Bitcoin, their annual report would say X BTC, worth $10k at escrow date, worth something else at disbursement. If Bitcoin pumps, great, they can boast a bigger dollar value. If not? Then they could only report a sponsorship of a lower value at disbursement.

Also, imagine the marketing fiasco of "hey, we sponsored $10k" then BTC takes a crap in May. Then you get Twitter trolls saying "yeah no, your prizes are only worth $5k".

Get over it, eat the cake you got =p It's a really nice cake!

Anyone know where to bet on next manager to be sacked? As soon as United lose tonight, I'm going to look for odds haha.

The effort required to conduct an “ideal” (and even ordinary) competition is truly enormous, so I specifically highlighted this point. But technical implementation is one thing (I still believe that everything should be automated in order to avoid subjective issues and be humane towards the organizers), but the format of the competition itself is another. It would be interesting to first come up with an “ideal” format, then you could think about how to implement it technically. I hope other participants will also suggest some ideas for improving the polls.

I think the way is with small steps for sure. BSFL was a big step in interaction, I hope UCL is a small step in risk reflection, but I remember the "resistance" with all that "extra work" required. I know for sure there is a way to automate, but that required coding, and possibly hosting. Even the spreadsheets BSFL and UCL use needed coding work (that isn't free, by the way). It would require -- more than anything else technically possible -- willingness for someone(s) to volunteer time and effort.

It's a big night of Champions League football but I'm going to turn my sights on the Club World Cup instead. The mighty Al-Ittihad, who boast Benzema and Fabinho meet Kiwi minnows Auckland City -- but form is good for the antipodeans, while I'm counting on poor form and overconfidence from the Jeddah giants. It's silly money, on a frivolous game, I'm feeling good.

We play each other in GW9, think again what you plan on sending my way.
I plan to rob you blind either way tho - I need the points badly and you're the perfect victim.
So buwa, you know my addy, I am expecting nice package and I will make sure you get fair officiating  Grin

I may even throw some asian sport question like Sepaktakrow if the package is extra good.

Kidding aside I will surely mention relegation derby in my next article  Grin

You can rob my locker room, cryptofrka, there aren't any trophies there, some broken training bibs, even a few euro coins. Help yourself. Don't give me penalties too early either. I won't need them but you should leave out your goal celebration choreography  in training session as you won't need it for our game.

Trofo ooo sepak takraw is going to be big one day. My long-term arm injury stems from a teenaged incident from that sport. I trust you have selected the best linesmen for me. cryptofrka is the embodiment of Pippo Inzaghi who lives in the offside, he must not be allowed to use his tricks.

Sheriff Igebotz, nothing to see here.

It's here! I'm rooting for Newcastle (!) and Dortmund (still want the to go top) but I think the pick of the night has to be United/Bayern, I can't help enjoying every period of crap for the Red Devils, but if there's time, PSV - Arsenal should be a treat too! I see an interesting early trend in the guys who've already submitted, but so as not to influence decisions for the remaining people, I'll reserve them for after Wednesday =)

Friendly reminder to all those yet to submit: six hours or so left. 25 of you left... don't break the record of 4 missing!

looking at Newcastle questions in another promo make me realize that Newcastle has scored goals only against PSG in this season CL group
two times against Dortmund, and once against Milan and they can't score
will this repeat on Wednesday, fully interesting last round there, PSG is probably want to see Milan on top there, since that is opening them to pass with a draw against Dortmund, if Newcastle wins, they will need to win as well

and IMO, Milan is closer to win than Newcastle there

Yeah, I liked their start but I think most people (myself included) overlooked BVB's pedigree in this competition. I think it's really a bit unfortunate Toon had this group full of experienced clubs. Then again, it's really the style that should have suited them and I still really think they got robbed by PSG.

I'm with KTChampions though, I think Milan are the less likely to win.

I feel like this is a draw -- it's my pick for the prediction game, and I got money on Dortmund to avenge last week's poor results.

This may be the group of death but I feel like anyone from the other groups will be equally happy to meet the ones who progress. Each with talent but each far below what they're capable of.
755  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: December 11, 2023, 07:22:02 PM
Luton, poor guys. Losing by a goal to the strongest teams but not enough.

Yes, this is a wonderful experiment, but now the situation has become sharply opposite: a crowd of lagging behind easily makes all-in bets to catch up with the leaders (who seem to be playing reliably), but since there are many lagging behind (and their total chances are high), this provokes the leaders too take more risks. In general, we'll see how it all ends, but I can assume that the volatility here will be too great to talk about a serious competition.
We need to come up with something in between. For example, so that the one who goes against the opinion of 90% of the participants receives more points (we need to come up with some kind of proportion for different ratios). It's too unfair when 15 people get 3 points for an accurate score of 2-1, and someone gets 3 points for a score of 4-0.
I understand that this is all difficult to implement (especially manual counting - this should be avoided), I’m just speculating.

Yeah, that was an unexpected outcome -- but I guess it's even better that now people are forced to risk, while at the same time, leaders are enticed to keep up, but I suspect the "slow and steady" will have a few winners come the end.

It gets even better once game selections dry up too!

I definitely like that concept of rarity bonus, weighted points for unpopular picks. It's all possible with formula but just the amount of work -- and requiring more careful submissions from 50+ people, that extra effort is nice but few estimate how much work it requires. Also, the issue of objectivity, might need organiser to NOT participate.

Right, boys. Now that we're approaching the halfway mark, I think it's enough chances I've given away. Surprised the top teams haven't built that much of a lead. Can't really remember past seasons but this one seems to be the tightest from top to middle? I mean "only" 8 points from casper to me in 11th. Easy peasy. By the time I beat him 2 rounds from now, it'll be a 2-point gap. Cro2, you received the package I set you yes?

Honestly, after knowing that I have won the round, I didn't bother to check the final score. I was more focused on following how others are playing to see if I can win the freebet. If I'm not mistaken, this is the second freebet I have won since the start of the competition. I think the first one was in the first season when I was invincible in Division 2.

You mean the second time you bribed to get freebets? It's ok, I'm going to bribe for the cup too. What exactly I'll get from it is hard to tell though...

Konsa's team got hammered, and yet he's actually my best points haul this gameweek (6) while fools like Diaz and Nunez gave far less despite being on the winning team. Awful 25 points in total, well below the average.

James is his own problem! He needs to have the fucking surgery done once and for all. He can't keep attempting to avoid surgery. He also needs to improve on his nutrition because he is gaining a lot of weight.

Yeah I thought I was being smart putting him in a few weeks ago, thought it was well high time for him to turn things around. Offloaded again and now just wondering what to do. wildcard maybe with 3 non-players to decide on.

It is getting tougher and tougher to get correct picks as the season gets in this congested period. Lots of rotations, injuries and strange results all around. Kudos for picking Solanke, I was trusting in United to do much better job. While I am on United topic, did you guys notice there isn't option to pick Garnacho. Or maybe I was just blind.

Didn't notice but I'll see next time. Was prudent for Solanke but got blended by Hammers -- how rare that you get almost the entire forward lineup to score? But Fuljam did just that -- and Wilson, Willian, Rodriguez were all my picks in past 3 rounds, don't know why I opted for Bowen instead.

Can't complain with 3/7. Son consolation penalty huh.

Bellingham did it for me, ensuring I needed both Chelsea and Spurs to not win today to secure a draw vs jeremypwr. Chelsea's happily obliged so now I need Newcastle to complete my rescue. @casperBGD That's how you respond to a deduction!

But cup games! Never did well but don't mind backing people (hopefully Sportsbet let's us throw money away on semifinalists as usual). Bring them on. Oh, imagine the craziness if one of the questions in the next round would be: "Will you make it into the cup QF?" Imagine both players trying to throw the game ha.
