861  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Useless ASICs on: August 18, 2013, 06:51:08 PM
Ok so theoretically, won't we reach a point where so many people have ASICs that they will generate fewer in BTC than they consume in electricity? Won't we reach a parity of sorts at which point people become unmotivated to mine in any way? This would be just like what has happened with the GPUs and FPGAs, but without a possible improvement of mining technology.

Obviously, should they become worth 1000$ each then it remains worth it for longer.

I sort of imagine a future where bitcoin mining is done philanthropically by those who can afford to, in order to keep money honest, but not as something you are materially rewarded for. Maybe even by a *shudder* elected body.

Well they're securing the network it seems even if unprofitably.  $1000 is what they're priced for.
862  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEW COIN Coming SoOoN! Androids Tokens. ADT on: August 18, 2013, 06:47:44 PM
Wow seems great.  This is the next Bitcoin, I can just see it now.
863  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Plateau in creation of new alt coins on: August 18, 2013, 06:42:13 PM
New alt coin creation seemed to increase very fast a while ago,  we've definitely hit a plateau a ways back though.  I can say that I don't bother with alt coins other than Litecoin right now.
864  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Ripple giveaway in that thread still ongoing? on: August 18, 2013, 06:36:07 PM
Is that giveaway still ongoing in the Ripple giveaway thread?  It show up in the unread posts area so I see that people are always still posting in it, but thought that it had ended some time ago.  What is the last date that someone has received some?
865  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple Giveaway! on: August 18, 2013, 06:34:29 PM
I think this ended, there's really no way to know unless someone says something.
866  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Would a US based escrow service be a Money Transmitter? on: August 18, 2013, 06:32:50 PM
Sounds more like a money-laundering setup than an escrow or a money-transmitter

Would a US-based company be able to provide this service without being considered a money transmitter?

Some aspects of the FinCEN guidance were comforting. Some were troubling. Some were death knells for otherwise successful businesses. Some could only be described as confusing. Here are the highlights:

  • Individuals who merely exchange bitcoin for goods and services (and vice versa) are merely “users” of a virtual currency, not money transmitters.
  • Businesses that accept bitcoin from one person and send it to another are money transmitters, and are not exempt from money transmission regulation simply because they do not deal in fiat currency.
  • Individual bitcoin miners who convert their “created” coins to fiat are money transmitters, even though they never act “as a business,” nor accept value from one person to transfer it to a third person.
  • Any business that exchanges fiat currency for virtual currency – or even one virtual currency for another – is a money transmitter.

Possibly Money Transmitter and Launderer.  The double whammy.
867  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: US Immigration arrested me for holding an illegal currency on: August 18, 2013, 06:30:26 PM
Last week I visited the states as a part of my sales work (ancient roman antiquities) but was stopped and held aside by immigration.
I was asked if I am carrying any currencies undeclared and they took my laptop to find the bitcoinQt. They held me for 4 hours and eventually told me that because I lied on my declaration, I would be banned from entering the US in the future.
Then, they sent me back to Europe on the US Taxpayer's dollar.
I never knew merely holding bitcoin would make my life so difficult. I will avoid doing business in USA now and rather go to China or Canada.
 Viva la bitcoin!

Give me a break.  Obviously they were looking for the Litecoin.

This should belong to the meta sub, I think.
And this is not the only fishy add in rotation now, theymos also insisted on keeping an obvious scammer one, after cleaning the malicious code off.

EDIT : I actually just got it after replying to this thread  Grin

Do not click on that link, even if it's probably safe now.  Wink

Ridiculous, they should get a ban instead of an ad placement.

I clicked it.  Ooops.

Just really range bound lately.  Would like to see it pick a direction.
871  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello bitcointalk on: August 18, 2013, 05:41:19 PM
Hello All,
I've been a reader for around 2 years and pretty much everything I know about mining I learned here. Honestly, I would have gotten nowhere without Con Colivas Cgminer thread. He's a hero.
I mine, more accurately mined, with 7970's. I started late but believe I've come out ahead.  BTC is over for me, at least directly.
Lately I'm attempting Scrypt mining (BTC seems easy now). 550 Kh/s is my best to date Cry
I hope to keep learning. Perhaps one day I'll return something useful.  My thanks go out to everyone who shares their knowledge (and personality) here. This is an awesome place!

Welcom to the forum.  Two years is a good amount of time.  If you don't like mining so much anymore maybe you can get involved some other way.  A website or business is good also.

Yea, just stick with BTC, fiat is a joke.
873  Economy / Gambling / Re: BitBook.biz - Bitcoin sportsbook - Best odds - Very quick transactions on: August 18, 2013, 05:32:36 PM
Nice live betting right now for the baseball games.  Do the odds update automatically if I leave the page open or have to refresh?
874  Economy / Gambling / Re: Casinobit - LIVE ROULETTE - [INVEST] - BEST CASINO OF 2013 on: August 18, 2013, 05:27:56 PM
Watching it after they fixed the problem is kinda pointless.  Take a look at the profit, it should be obvious it doesn't support the tripling and doubling of BTC that was occuring several days ago.

Yes, that looked just to good to be true, but when that happened bankroll was less than 100 coins... I know admin was taking a risk because the most profitable bet would emptied bankroll and some more coins would be needed to pay the bet.

The European roulette has a 2.7% house edge, that's much higher than dice type casinos, so, more profit for investors...

Yea the edge is better for investors, wagering is pretty low right now though.
875  Other / Off-topic / Re: Second Life users here? on: August 18, 2013, 05:23:03 PM
I think virwox allows buying lindens with Bitcoin

It does, one of the ways to buy BTC with credit card or paypal.  Fees are high and spreads arent great either.
876  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Free Bitcoins every hour at Bitcoin Socially on: August 18, 2013, 05:17:05 PM
Not sure why this got a bump, did it just recently go down?  Never heard of before, not working for me either.
877  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello Forum on: August 18, 2013, 05:15:26 PM
Hi,
I don't really have much to say besides hi.  Im interested in joining the forums to learn more about bitcoins, crypto-currencies and mining.
Also I'm in college and don't have much money so if you wanna throw some spare change at me, I definitely don't have a problem with that.

So yeah, just posted to say hi, if you have any noob tips let me know. Smiley

Welcome to the forum.  It's definitely helpful for what you're looking for.  You can find giveaways and faucets that will throw BTC at you all day also.
878  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: xCharts - BTC-e fast charts on: August 18, 2013, 05:12:52 PM
It is pretty fast, doesn't zoom out as much as I would like, or I don't see the optioin to zoom out further.
879  Other / Off-topic / Re: I want to mess around with electricity generation on: August 18, 2013, 05:10:38 PM
So I've been looking at various methods of electricity generation for a while now and I've decided at some point I actually want to try things out but I need to find better information about it all so I can actually do it. Do you guys have any sites or bits of information you'd recommend? Even school couldn't fuck up learning the basics of electricity for me so I at least know about the basics but when it comes to actually assembling and building generators I'm a bit stumped because lessons never went into that much detail.

The most I've been able to find are some simple wind generators which use magnets, copper wire and a bit of plastic or there are those stupid school ones that don't explain anything properly or do a really half-assed job of it. I'm actually thinking in a slightly bigger scale than that, I'm not looking to power up a light bulb or anything I was hoping I'd be able to experiment and figure out how general electricity generation worked and maybe even use something to power up my computer.

I may well end up with nothing, but it sure would be nice to come close or at least detach certain electric run stuff off the grid to save money, like an air conditioner trolololol Cheesy

Solar Panel cost is continually headed downward, and a wind generator can be home built I've heard.
880  Economy / Speculation / Re: What would happen to the price with a bitcoin funded terrorist attack? on: August 18, 2013, 05:04:10 PM
Hypothetically, if there were a boston bombing or 9/11 type of attack on the US or another country and they found out that all of the funding was through Bitcoin, what do you think would happen to the price afterwards?

You know you would have the talking heads on the networks talking about how evil Bitcoin is with the usual "something has to be done" type of message. There would be knee jerk reactions aplenty.

Would this drop the price? Or would the publicity, however bad, raise the price?

More drama and b/s about how BTC is used for crime and such.  Hopefully it doesn't happen.  Think we might see some blackmail and things like that eventually.
