Yeah, the latest nvidia drivers stopped working with cgminer. I don't know what they did, but they fucked up my ability to mine and use the computer at the same time. Hopefully their next release will undo the problem.

The Venus Project has recently achieved a milestone in their efforts to create a mass media major motion picture.

Quote
THANK YOU! We have reached our goal of $100,000 to hire a scriptwriter for The Venus Project’s major motion picture. We even went over that amount by about $13,000. Thanks to a recent larger donation. We deeply appreciate all the dedication and participation from those who donated and encouraged others to do so. The sum raised was almost entirely from smaller donations therefore a large number of people donated. We will keep people informed as to how it is progressing. Thank you again from all of us at The Venus Project.

I have encouraged them to accept bitcoin donations for some time, but I have not heard from them about their stance on this issue. Hopefully, when they have a larger monetary goal, they will seek more sources of funding in the future.

I would also point out that there is a similar effort being made by the makers of Waking Up, an open source film that does accept bitcoin donations.

I find it interesting that major changes were implemented to the client/protocol that helped pools before we started considering changes that would help the common bitcoin user. That is probably something that is endemic of our society. Helping the big interests in a society first makes it more difficult to implement changes for the betterment of all stakeholders.

To what are you referring?

Specifically the ability to reward the generated coins in a new block to multiple addresses, thus making it easier for many new pool operators to payout to their miners. I recall that being a significant boost to the pool op community.

There can't be a democracy if the vast majority of those with voting power are ignorant on what they're voting for.

If you want to sell DRM encumbered content for example via Apple iTunes, then at least make sure that it is also available to GNU / Linux users who are using 100% Free Software at the same time and also make a DRM unencumbered copy of the content available to your paid subscribers at no additional cost within a reasonable period of time say one or two months.

I'm looking into this right now. Last I checked, selling something on the Kindle for example required that no other digital copy be available. I need to see if simply offering different 'versions' of our magazine would suffice.

UPDATE: Looks like we're moving for a Spanish version of the magazine as soon as Issue #2. If anyone has any recommendations for a cheap way to get this done, please contact me.

I would advocate for whichever option that makes things difficult now, but easier in the future to work with. For too long we, as a society, have implemented policies and technologies based on how convenient they are, as opposed to those which are better for the long term health and sustainability of our species. Can you tell us which would be better for the long term development of bitcoin, its continued function and the specific challenges we would face in the short term? I appreciate the fastener analogy, but that still is fairly vague.
990  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Twitter suspended Feed Ze Birds application on: January 26, 2012, 01:46:54 AM
Got a notice today from Twitter that all we needed to do was add "#spon" to each of our campaigns. I've done this, and they've re-enabled our application!

While Feed Ze Birds has been down, we've been addressing a couple of overdue development goals. We're going to finish these out and open up the site again by this weekend.

New features:
Better spam account recognition
Performance graphs on stats page
0 confirmation deposits

Great news!

64 bit version crashes for me also. Reverting back to 32 bit.

Thanks for all the dev work!

Glad to see the pool grow, and looking forward to its integration with the standard client.

The latest Win32 release doesn't seem to be mentioned in the OP, BTW.

The SecurityNow podcast, episode 278, released 10 Feb 2011.
Bitcoin was the main subject of that episode.

Same here.

I forget who said it, but there was a comedian who said that you haven't made it until your have a magazine devoted to your race/class/cause/etc. Funny that it might actually be true still today.

Is it possible to order a copy for a friend?
995  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This will change Bitcoin as you know it. on: January 25, 2012, 07:57:00 AM
I just saw the Page One movie about the New York Times and print media in general being slowly but surely destroyed by the internet and social media. It's a great irony that the cryptocurrency of the future is staking out space in media's past. I look forward to reading the magazine if and when it gets down to my local B&N. Would it help if I call the store and demand that they carry it?
996  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Ubitex: In-person Bitcoin exchange [EARLY BETA!] [STOCK AVAILABLE] on: January 23, 2012, 12:57:25 AM
I only ever invested 1 bitcoin at the initial offering. I would feel weird calling up his parents and asking for my "digital p2p pseudonymous currency"/7 dollars back. But for those who lost much more, I am sympathetic to your situation and would be helpful in any way I could be. Still hoping that the guy comes back and explains what's been going on. I don't think he was an outright thief.

Hopefully we can avoid any...incidents...

Latest Win32 binary continues to crash bitcoin-qt, even 0.5.2.

qt is the GUI version right? I think that is addressed here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18313.msg696459#msg696459 You just need to use bitcoind instead of bitcoin-qt.

Yes, I'm aware. I just wanted to test the latest versions out.

Bitcoins are created ex nihilo, pretty much in the same way as dollars are created when a commercial bank lends money to someone who is buying a house.

Actually, bitcoins are created according to a set of rules, themselves based upon the laws of math, logic and thermodynamics. As Stephen Hawking would say, the fact that such rules exist implies that bitcoins would exist. Bank loans exist at the whim of the banker.
