I've gotten quite a few requests to create accounts for new writers. I made several accounts this afternoon or requested a writing sample.  If you have written me and still not gotten a response, please message me again as I may have simply missed you. Please include a small writing sample (50 to 100 words) with your request.  Thanks everyone for your patience. Devcoins are suddenly getting really exciting Smiley

Personally i like the idea of themarket deciding price for work so assign shares to bounties until complete? Reduce shares per round to writers?
You mean shares or absolute amount of dvc? I'm with you on the market factor but the various share components aren't constants so it would be difficult for any natural market consenus to pin down a value on an unknown. I wasn't even getting into the general devtome/payment issue, as I think people know my view. Was only referring to the max(round).

Very few submit anywhere near 80k in a round, but this has a disproportionate effect on everything dvc (not just other writers, but also other writers). There's still no submission limit and I don't see the need for one, but everything above a lower-than-80 amount would still just get rolled to the next round as now. I don't know what the right number is but if a forum is 24-48, a feature animation is ~50 and a simple Open Transactions client is 96 then I'd say quite a bit lower than 80.

On Open Tansactions, has anyone actually tried installing it? Be interested to know what functionality exists. www.opentransactions.org

If you cut the 80 in half to 40, I would hardly notice it. It's easy to publish everything you've ever written in one round and collect a massive payout but maintaining a steady discipline of writing day in and day out is much more difficult, even with writing about whatever you want.  If I ever got to the point where I *did* submit 80,000 words in one round I think I would like to have that divided up over two rounds anyway--might be nice to take a round off and still get paid Smiley

The Devcoin price has almost doubled in the last week to ten days. Buckle up and hold on to your devcoins. It's about to get crazy!

I was just noticing that, and with Bitcoins hitting $1000 on Gox a few times, the price of DVC is still climbing. I'm of course thrilled, but can anyone speak to the why now in particular?

I've also noticed that the Devcoin faucet has been hopping the last few days, paying out sometimes in five or ten minutes it's so popular.

I referred someone to download the devcoin wallet he wanted to buy some coins however on win 8 he said it was shutting down on him without warning. Also I noticed that its built for 32 bit.. is there a 64 bit wallet out?

There is no 64 bit wallet, Windows 7 will run the 32 bit wallet, not sure about Windows 8.

The wallet is tentatively slotted in to be upgraded over the Xmas holidays, paid for with pledges from devcoin community members. Any one can contribute. Perhaps some one can repost the link to that thread?
It works with windows 8

Agreed, we have to work with what we have, catch up on back logs and getting people to categorize their work or at least be guided to a best practices article

The categorizing is time consuming, I did all my articles last weekend and it took me 10 hours. This is a burden if left to admins and a waste of resources.

To categorize an article takes 5-10 minutes, true, but frees up admins. To categorize an article go to http://www.devtome.com/doku.php and the lower page has the categories.

Example: If your article is economics related, you can see economics is a subcategory of commerce

Edit the 'Economics" page and add your article's title in alphabetical order, same as the other existing articles.

On your page at the bottom add this:
[[category:Commerce]]  |  [[category:Economics]]

That's it, you are done. Some pages are being used as categories, such as "Health", which needs to be fixed for the categorization to work, otherwise the Wiki will not recognize the link and display it in red. There is work required ensuring that all the categories are actually categories, some categories require cleaning up and additional ones are required.

Also please add your articles to the Most Recent list at http://www.devtome.com/doku.php - it allows admins to check articles as they are completed.

Thanks, and please correct me if I am wrong.

Great post on categorizing. I've been working on it here and there as well, especially with new articles. any way to make this post sticky so it's easy to find?

I'm still in and have not settled. 4.22898497 BTC in two different CL accounts. These include interest.

About eight days ago I sent TF an email offering a way for him to repay in monthly increments for a year. I asked him to make me an offer if he didn't like it. Haven't heard back.

This is the first time I post my balance so I doubt I'm in the other fruit thread.  I'd like to be kept in the loop about any pending legal action but don't want to commit to participating until I know more. I can always hope TF and I can settle quietly.  the lack of communication is disconcerting.  I have lots of patience but I really have a hard time with being ignored.

Here's an interesting and somewhat philosophical question.  Has Devcoin ever been used in a scam?  I mean have there ever been Devcoin scammers and scams?

Considering what a lot of Bitcoins get used for (SR related stuff), I'm not surprised that there are so many scams out there, and even the ones that I wouldn't consider to be scams often times go bad anyway.

Devcoins may very well be a truly ethical currency on a number of levels, depending on the answer to the top set of questions in this post.

If there is something deeper going on here, that may be the best reason of all for us to hold onto and invest our Devcoins rather than trading them into Bitcoins.

Some food for thought for a Tuesday morning...
1647  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: November 26, 2013, 02:05:04 PM
We should really be more careful with known scammers guys.

I probably should.  The only problem is that here on the Bitcoin Forum, scam accusations are thick and pretty much everyone gets to be a scammer for  15 minutes, especially if something goes wrong.

I don't see the big deal about this site anyway. Not too worried about it. Though I'd imagine holding fee shares after that announcement felt like being punched in the stomach....

It is a bit annoying holding mcxFee shares in light of this--I have a few.  But reading the trollbox more than makes up for it for sheer entertainment value Smiley

Not only that, I never run out of things to blog about!
1649  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: November 26, 2013, 04:52:35 AM
Nice jump. Thanks to those of you who dumped to me at 13 satoshis!  Smiley

I dumped quite a few at 13-16, doh! :p
I wouldn't dump at these prices. With a little patience, it's best to wait for a pump. The last pump I caught, I made over 1000% gains on my devcoins.

Then again..... pump may never come.  Smiley  But with the new life that has been breathed into altcoins this week, I'm not taking any chances!

Hey guys

Just in case you hadn't heard - Bitcoin cloud mining platform CEX.IO is going to start trading DVC/BTC on their exchange (where you can buy and sell ASIC mining shares, BTC and NMC at the moment).

This is absolutely great news and bodes well for the future! We mentioned it briefly in a write up of CEX.IO: http://bitcoinprbuzz.com/anyone-can-mine-bitcoin-from-anywhere-with-revolutionary-bitcoin-asic-cloud-mining-platform-cex-io/

  Grin
This is very nice news. Thanks for sharing Smiley

No problem Wink The trade volume on the exchange there is quite decent (and it's an awesome place to cloud mine - they currently pay out merge mined coins NMC, IXC as well as DVC ontop of the BTC mining) - I think it is one of the more professional services to appear for a while. When DVC starts trading there it's going to be exciting times  Wink

I was actually really excited to see that you could buy hashing power directly with Namecoins (because I don't have anything else to do with the Namecoins that I merge mine there).  I asked them when they would be setting it up to where you could buy hashing power with Devcoins and Ixcoins as well, but they said they weren't planning to do that yet.  I hope that changes.  But if you can trade DVC for BTC right there then it would just be a two step process to turn DVC into hashing power.  I also like how the price for a GHz has been pretty stable (even through at least one difficulty rise) so I feel like I am likely to be able to sell it for more or less what I paid for when I get bored with mining Wink

I'd be interested in helping with some of the writing Smiley

I like the idea of an investment fund. ... I would want nice slick website pages which explain in plain English

This is totally doable! Every one of us (those who write on devtome) could write those "plain English" pages, like popularized science. There is no need to force the engineers/analysts/etc to leave their comfort zone, we could help them.
If not on devtome, then everywhere could be hosted an usual CMS. I also could write some pages myself...

As about the fund, I suggested to be mono-cephalic, for speed of decision (I don't believe in committees) and transparent, so... you understand...

I'd like to promote such a project (i.e. work and push it through, not leading it, leading is a merit-based position...). I'd be glad to know which domains belong to devcoin community and where could this "DevCoin Projects Encyclopedia" be hosted...

In my country, domains are for life, and around 50USD. I'd buy one from my money (in max 30 days from now) and host it on one of my hosts.
It could easily be WP, or, if undesirable, other CMS of choice.

How will You find the first Fund Administrator, and who will endorse him/her?

1652  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: November 15, 2013, 05:41:24 PM
I like the idea of an investment fund.  It would have to be developed further so that everyone has clear expectations about it, but that's something I'd be inclined to invest in too.  One of my expectations would be that I would want nice slick website pages which explain in plain English every single project (a page for each one) with lots of clearly labeled pictures and plenty of discussion about how said project will improve my life.  All those pages would have to be easily found by visiting an easy to remember url.  The entire site should have an FAQ section, post who are the decision makers of the fund and how to reach them, indicate when things are up for a vote, and there should be a blog for project updates (categorized by projects so I could easily find all the updates on any particular project).  When you buy a share, that enters your email address (with your consent of course but it is strongly encouraged) onto the fund mailing list and shareholders are kept updated with everything relevant.  Part of the revenue could come from advertising on the site.

In the mean time, FWIW, I've been putting my Devcoins into VIRTUAL and P2PDVC, both on Cryptostocks.

...I think this is what DVB was supposed to be about, but it isn't managed in a clear and transparent manner.
Perhaps you can start by describing how exactly it should work.

Thank You for fast and accurate answer.

Now that's what I was thinking about:

Devcoin bounties are (afaik, don't forget I'm new...) paid in two ways:
A - "In hand": transferred from a wallet, already mined, and "old" coins.
B - shares: mined (those are coins in the future, not yet mined)

I'm talking about those "old" coins (point A):
(and I'm talking for myself, please don't feel offended)
 - instead of hoarding them/sit on them/fatten my bottom/... I'd like to let the money work, so I could give them to a trust/fund/... backed by the Devcoin Admins
 - this fund should (under transparent mono-cephalic administration repaid from profit) invest/trade/"produce" some value with this fund.
(This is the most sensitive part, and I'm new in this community, but I've read and there are a few thrifty individuals here that certainly know more than me how to grow a bunch of coins...)
 - if quick bounties are needed - those are money "at hand" (refilled from future shares)
 - If large volume bounties are needed: more than could be mined during some project, this fund might also be welcome...
 - It's manager could also implement some coherent policy (sell to distribute coin for usage, buy to rise the price...) established at the Admin level or by shareholder's vote (already in place...)
 - Other benefits I'm not enough educated to see, derived from managing a large volume of money...

If this would help and would exist, I'd gladly give it my DVCs, instead of selling too low or throwing them into the basement...
Thanks again for the patience

THANK YOU!  I checked my account and it looks like what you wrote here.  Thank you for seeing this through and I look forward to receiving your email update.

* Borrowers don't have an obligation to repay ASAP, however I'm working to allow the best actions to be taken given the situation.
* Dumping all assets asap isn't a smart idea, there's not enough liquidity for it except for deposits like JD.
* All failed withdrawals should have been re-credited back to your account.
* All CDs have been terminated with the fee rebates paid as of today.
* Please wait for an email update. You don't need to email me, any CL user with a balance will receive a mass email.
1655  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: November 10, 2013, 04:51:58 AM
This is a great post, and I totally agree about being willing to hold out for a higher sell price.  I'm also playing around with trying to buy low and sell off a few points higher, although I think this is a tough time to get into that because the price of Bitcoin is running away so much, so I've kind of backed off of that even for the time being.  I'll try that again once the price of Bitcoin stabilizes a bit and alt coins start to move more.

I was noticing too that considering the fact that Bitcoin has about tripled in price over the past three weeks, Devcoin is actually holding out fairly well.  Yes, its value has fallen, but not proportionally to how much Bitcoin has gone up.  In fact, Devcoin has been sitting right around 19-20 sat the entire time that Bitcoins have gone from just under $300 to just under $400.  Now I notice bitcoin is back at $300 and falling and Devcoin price hasn't gone up either.  I'm not sure what all that means, but I have noticed a lot of alt coins have taken a hit, but I was expecting Devcoin to take an even bigger hit than it did.

I had never considered the whole issue where the amount of Devcoins doubles between year 1 and year 2 but only increases by a third between year 2 and year 3 and less thereafter.  So that would mean that we are currently experiencing the greatest price drops due to inflation that will ever happen, and this part should balance out as the coin "matures."

And I have a greater appreciation for those Devtome writers who have been at it for a long time and are holding onto their Devcoins (and not dumping them).  Although I do sell some of mine I do not sell anywhere near all of them (I don't have any desire to kill the price by selling down the buy wall either) and mine are starting to pile up as well.

My position has tended to be that the merged mined coins are ultimately a good bet simply because it is so trivially easy for miners to support them.

Most of the altcoins all have to divide up among them the hashing power that is available in the world, but the merged mined coins such as DeVCoin can all share the same massive bunch of hashing power so hopefully will long term be the most secure.

The thing about coins that never stop or even decrease the number of coins minted per block, such as DeVCoin and GRouPcoin and, I think, also CoiLedCoin and GeistGeld, is that in their second year the number of coins minted is 100% of what had previously existed, in their third year the number minted is 50% of what previously existed, in their fourth year the number minted is 33.33333333% of what previously existed and so on, that is to say it takes years for the new coins coming into existence in a given year to become a small fraction of the number already existing. Billions of DeVCoins already exist, but billions more are still being made. So it seems reasonable that it should take years from the time such coins are launched until their rate of inflation is low so we should expect that the first bunch of years people will dismiss them as printing way too many coins per year.

Take some comfort in the fact that at least some people who hold billions of them are not dumping them, because they could totally clean out the buy offers any time but they have not done so. They are maybe even the very people who are buying as well as selling, like I do, to keep the coin liquid. I have offers on Vircurex at every possible price on both buy and sell sides except the gap in between buy and sell where the actual trading at a given moment is going on. Thus basically whenever anyone sells I am buying but also whenever anyone buys I am selling. I have a fixed amount on the exchange and it just keeps changing how much of it is in bitcoins and how much is in devcoins as the buying and selling goes back and forth.

I would suggest that unless you like the idea of doing that - sitting on both sides of the gap between buys and sells, to profit on either direction - you simply forget about your DeVCoins until you hear they have gone back up above 200 satoshis each, or maybe 200 satoshis adjusted for bitcoin value increase since back when above 200 was the reasonable level bitcoins themselves were only worth $100 or less.

Looking at how much bitcoins have been going up, it has looked to me like maybe devcoins were actually being carried up with them to some extent, that is, devcoins haven't seemed offhand to me to be dropping relative to bitcoin as fast as bitcoin has been going up relative to fiat currencies. Is that not lately the case? Maybe I had the wrong impression.

I consider the times when DeVCoin is low to be great times to be buying, because I am confident they will go back up eventually.

When you bought for 250 satoshis per devcoin, how many dollars were bitcoins worth?

If you buy more devcoins while they are cheap, your average price paid per devcoin will become lower than 250 the more you buy the lower! Smiley Cheesy

I suggest not directly/instantly buying or selling "accepting the market price" but instead pick the price you want to buy or sell at put your offer there and sit back waiting for someone someday to take you up on your offer, instead of being the impatient side of the trade accepting some offer someone else already has in place. (Assuming a somewhat trusted exchange such as Vircurex that historically has always made good to its customers any time it took losses from hacks etc, of course, so you can feel reasonably confident leaving coins on the exchange waiting for your offer to be taken up by someone.)

Just received most of what I had deposited on October 27th, the day after the hack was discovered.  It wasn't a lot of coin, but it was to me, and I salute TF's efforts.  Immediate responsiveness, contrasted with Roman/bitfloor.

As I have said in another thread, while I am angry at how this happened, I am not accusing TF of being a scammer.  I've always told my kids that making a mess is regrettable, but leaving it is really bad.  TF seems to be trying to clean up. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and I remain hopeful at this time that I won't lose the larger amount in Coinlenders.

I mostly agree with this assessment.  TF is honest and will do the best he can.  His reputation up to this point has been very good.

I'm always amazed by how quickly the cynicism surfaces and the accusations fly at the first sign of something going wrong.
