1461  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why This Greek Tragedy Could Mean Global Disaster on: March 13, 2015, 10:40:59 PM
That is all well known and makes the whole crisis now even more of a joke than it actually appears at first glance.  What doesn't make sense to me is why they weren't thrown out of the euro straight away when this was found out?

It doesn't really explain why the Greek tragedy could mean global disaster either? They could be the first domino, but otherwise I doubt they will cause a global disaster.
1462  Other / Politics & Society / Re: White Privilege Conference on: March 13, 2015, 10:35:48 PM
I thought the idea of white privilege died with phrenology!
It is typical American stuff though, attempted politically correct racism, dressed up as conservative politics.

I worry about America when you hear about this sort of stuff, and what is happening in Ferguson, but whenever I've been there they always seem quite 'normal'.
1463  Economy / Economics / Re: Washington’s $210 Trillion Deficit on: March 13, 2015, 10:29:56 PM
You read that right: $210 trillion.

A trillion here, a trillion there: pretty soon, we’re talking big money.

Professor Lawrence Kotlikoff of Boston University testified before the Senate Budget Committee. As usual, his testimony is shocking

The U.S. has a $210 trillion “fiscal gap” and “may well be in worse fiscal shape than any developed country, including Greece,” Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff told members of the Senate Budget Committee in written and oral testimony on Feb. 25.

“The first point I want to get across is that our nation is broke,” Kotlikoff testified. “Our nation’s broke, and it’s not broke in 75 years or 50 years or 25 years or 10 years. It’s broke today.
http://teapartyeconomist.com/2015/03/12/washingtons-210-trillion-deficit

I remember the official USA Federal Deficit being in the range of $14 Billion, $15 B, $18,000,000,000, but the numbers above are hard to comprehend. I hope the collapse can somehow be avoided for a long time.
Well Greece has an official total debt of about 350 billion, so about 0.15% of the number posted here I would assume it is more than Greece!

Given that the official debt number for the US is 18.7trillion, I don't know exactly where the other 193trillion come from.. I assum it is the total private debt of each person, company etc. it doesn't matter, it's all just numbers, they are still rich and will remain so.
1464  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin as a reward in a iOS/Android Mobile game? on: March 13, 2015, 02:12:08 PM
You can give them a passcode after a player clears a level. They then click a link to a webpage, enter the passcode to send bitcoin prize to his address.
I think that will be easier. Also, there is a game on iOS which rewards bitcoins if Im not wrong
Yeah CoinCrusher and CoinFlapper already offer bitcoin rewards, but they are basically games that are also faucets, the amount given out is constant but low.
I would hazard a guess that you would also like to offer a very low reward amount too though, thus making it like a faucet, or would you like to give a higher amount but to very few players?
1465  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what is the best wallet in the world? on: March 13, 2015, 01:11:27 PM
Hi users  someone can tell me what is the best walet in the world?
i do not know which one use. thanks.
I haven't tested all of the wallets in the world, but I find that blockchain.info is very good.
I can use it on my phone very easily, which means I can spend my bitcoins on the go, or check to see if transactions have gone through when I am not at my computer.

You should have a Bitcoin core too though.
1466  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's Edge - How will bitcoin fight off competitors? on: March 13, 2015, 10:59:05 AM
Bitcoin's biggest edge is the first mover advantage.
It doesn't really have too many features that haven't been imporved upon by alt coins, it isn't the fastest, it isn't the most efficient, etc but it is the most established and will be the make or break of the near furure of Crypto.

If bitcoin fails, Crypton fails for the foreseeable future, if it suceeds, then it can be superceded in the future by better Alts, but it has to succeed first
1467  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: When asking for a refund from a seller.... on: March 13, 2015, 10:02:36 AM
If I want to get a refund from a seller I should receive the full amount of Bitcoins I paid to the seller correct?
I would expect that many would refund you the USD amount of the transaction, otherwise they are always at risk of a big market move leading to lots of refunds being requested.
There hasn't been any massive move in the last few weeks, so it shouldn't be a problem though.

To turn it around, if you bought something when bitcoin was $1000, would you want a BTC refund if the price had fallen to $300?
1468  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Sir Terry Pratchett, renowned fantasy author, dies aged 66 on: March 13, 2015, 09:59:29 AM
A great thinker and humanist...He will be missed.

Noli timere messorem!
and after his long fight to allow euthanasia, it seems that he ironically died of natural causes at home with his family.

RIP
1469  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Canadian Town Bans Spitting, Swearing And Gathering In Groups Of Three Or More on: March 13, 2015, 09:57:03 AM
I would like to see spitting banned, it is littering really, I hate it, it makes me feel sick to see people gobbing all over the street all the time.
Swearing and gathering in groups of 3 or more seems a bit of a stretch, along with the permanent curfew for youths.  I would be surprised if any of the rules stood up in court, so someone will test them out and get them overturned in no time no doubt.
1470  Economy / Speculation / Re: IBM looking at adopting bitcoin technology for major currencies on: March 13, 2015, 07:25:22 AM
these companies like to control their funds. so yes, they might make their own crypto currency.
can't really see it impacting bitcoin in any way if they do so.
I think it is fair enough for a company to adopt a blockchain to send information and money around internally. Actually it solves the problem of price fluctuation for a company, they can assign a value to each coin and use them to near instantly and securely send money around the world to different branches and locations.

I don't think it should be considered as a Bitcoin replacement or even really for external use, but for a company it seems like a very efficient idea.
1471  Economy / Speculation / Re: Not trying to FUD... just help me understand on: March 13, 2015, 07:21:34 AM
Hi
this is a good question because issues like it go to the heart of the value/price of a bitcoin. you will have seen posts talking about bitcoin going to the "moon" ie  the total demand to use it even to the satoshi level will be dramatic so that will rise the price of a bitcoin to figures like $10,000 or $100,000 for each bitcoin.

so it is important that every time blockchain "use' is mentioned it is handy if people say whether or not they think that particular "use" sits inside or outside (eg on top of it) of bitcoin - ie is it a "part moon shot" use or a use that is neutral in terms of bitcoin price.

I am increasingly of the view that much of what is to come in terms of use is not going to increase the price of a bitcoin and that its long term price will always be low in comparison to moonshot estimates ie under $500
It isn't all about the price you know, Satoshi didn't sit down and think - how can I make a new currency that will be worth a lot of money - it is about being a global currency that can pass money from person to person without the need of middlemen scraping off profits at every point.

Now the use of the blockchain for other purposes might not have been planned by Satoshi (I don't know), but it is still a positive for the theory of bitcoin.  Anything that increases our P2P ability is in the interest of Bitcoin, even if the price isn't increased by it.
1472  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Purse.io - Bitcoin Amazon Marketplace - Save ~10-25% on Amazon Wishlist on: March 13, 2015, 07:16:58 AM
Well it seems I have got all of the "help" I am going to get from Purse.io.
I have been threatened with legal action, but Purse say I shouldn't worry, it isn't my fault.  They won't refund the ripped off company and can't contact the scammer (shocking!) so they will just let things run their course now.  I guess I just have to wait until the police turn up at my door now or I get a court summons.

I don't recommend people use purse.io.  10-25% discount is not worth the stress.

The company has a contract with the scammer. So normally the person they would have to sue would be the scammer. But when the goods were sent to another person, so that they could get the goods back, it would be really interesting what a lawyer would say. Is it still their property or is it yours since you paid for it. Its even unsure if you have a contract with purse or with the scammer.

It might be that the company claims that you are the scammer and you only used wishlists to hide that. At least purse is a company that has some rich investors behind. I think they can afford the lawyers.

When i think about it. Purse wont be able to do it the way it is doing very long anymore. Personal identification for buyers need to come since where an opportunity there will scammers try more. There are forums where such "tricks" are shared. Or it only needs one person with access to hacked amazonaccounts, to make things really bad.
This is exactly my worry, I don't think it will be easy to explain and even more difficult to prove the whole situation to any law authorities.
I have paid, but not the company that has been ripped off, I gave money to some scammer who has ripped off the company, does that mean I can keep the products bought through Purse?

It's nice that Purse are answering questions on this thread, shame that they pick and choose which cases they want to deal with though.

I assume this happens quite a lot, what annoys me is that I can't change my review of my transaction, I put is as positive earlier, now I see it is a scam I obviously would like to put it as negative, but I can't.  Maybe the "customer support" reading this could change that feature.
1473  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Video: Bitcoin 101 - What is Bitcoin? on: March 12, 2015, 08:23:24 PM
How long is this video? Is it any good? Is it something we'd show our grandparents or more entertaining then that?
If only there was some way to find out...

It's a decent overview of bitcoin, I would like to see some good documentaries about the evolution of bitcoin though, I think the Morgen Spurlock one should be decent but probably overly opinionated like Supersize me.
1474  Economy / Speculation / Re: You will HODL until?...... on: March 12, 2015, 08:19:13 PM
I would sell my Bitcoins if the price drops to only double an Alt-coin I trust. Then I am going all in with the Alt-coin. How about you?
You plan to sell when it reaches a certain low? Great plan! Do you plan to buy more if the price gets above $500? Most people aim to buy low and sell high, your tactics are different, I'll give you that.
1475  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core 0.10.0 starts very slow. on: March 12, 2015, 08:17:22 PM
-snip-
Seriously, will fixing those lines of code help it?

If so, then will I put on my thinking cap and try it out, just seam too good to be true? :/

As I wrote above, I run an old system as well and its not as fast as Id like it to be for bitcoin core to start. Im fine if something takes a minute or two to load, but before I changed the settings it took me - similar to here - 10 or 15 minutes just to launcher bitcoin core.

I did not change "checklevel", but lowered "checkblocks" little by little until I found a value that is fine for me. By default its checking the last 2 days worth of blocks (at average block time of 10 minutes). Since many blocks are close to the max block size lately it takes time to check them.
I tried those settings and it sped up the starting of my bitcoin core from sometimes an ages, to a couple of minutes!
Thanks for the .conf file, it has been very annoying recently waiting for the core to start up.
1476  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Third USMS Auction Winners, Still Not Revealed on: March 12, 2015, 06:16:19 PM
Why do they have to reveal themselves?

Bitcoin, as a fundamental principle, celebrates anonymity...why do you want to persecute these people for trying to keep theirs?
Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous, that's how Dread Pirate Roberts was found and how stolen coins can be tracked, even if they are possibly never recoverable.

In this case there is no need for the winners to disclose themselves, but I would bet that within 2 months we will know all of the winners, people with so much money to throw around usually like to tell people about it!
1477  Other / Politics & Society / Re: NSA vs CIA ? Reason behind a break down between the two? on: March 12, 2015, 06:12:59 PM
CIA is external, they look for external threats to America.
FBI is internal, they look for internal threats to America

NSA is a mix of the two to cover both bases in cases of terrorism, after 9/11 when the communication between agencies was found to be lacking, the NSA started to step in and fill the gap (and more)
1478  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Staggering Secret History of the Hellish A-bomb on: March 12, 2015, 02:33:29 PM
Dan Carlin did an interesting Hardcore History episode about the A-bombing of Japan.
He basically was saying that the firebombing of Tokyo was as bad or worse than the nukes.

I also heard a theory that the Yanks used the A-bombs because the Russians were about to go over and finish off the Japanese on the ground, thus taking them into the USSR, they didn't want that so had to go to extremes to end the war fast
1479  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2 cops shot in ferguson during "peaceful protest" on: March 12, 2015, 02:13:17 PM
fucking apes

Quote
Two St. Louis County Police officers were shot outside the Ferguson Police Department early Thursday, according to acting Ferguson police chief Lt. Col. Al Eickhoff.
Bob Hoehn, a KSDK-TV photographer, reported two police officers were loaded into ambulances. One was taken immediately to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center and the teaching hospital for Washington University School of Medicine. The other officer was initially treated on the scene.
In a news conference outside the hospital around 2 a.m. CT, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said one officer was shot in the shoulder and one was shot in the face. Both officers were conscious, he said.

video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN-WjWLC9jk

The whole situation sounds crazy in Ferguson.  Americans defend their rights to carry weapons, so they have to accept that mistakes will be made by police officers who don't want to be shot and killed as part of their job.  The whole town sounds like it is a racial tinderbox too, I have no idea what the ethnic breakdown is, or why Ferguson in particular is having these constant problems, but someone really needs to step in and do something.

I also strongly disagree with you calling them apes, I think you should remove that.
1480  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wall Street To Bitcoin: Does It Really Matter? on: March 12, 2015, 02:09:37 PM
I noticed that more and more EX/Former Wall Street guys are taking their talents to Bitcoin-related businesses.

http[Suspicious link removed]c-blythe-masters-swaps-wall-street-for-bitcoin/

I mean..Bitcoin was built in the first place to avoid these guys..
I don't think it is too important that this is happening, but it also isn't a bad thing.
With the DOW and NASDAQ at all time highs, bonds yielding nothing and the USD crazy strong, they are struggling to invest in anything that has a lot of potiential.

That and that banks are being more tightly regulated, whereas Bitcoin isn't yet, so they can get away with ripping everyone off for a while before getting caught again!
