1521  Economy / Speculation / Re: rising interest rates and bitcoin ? on: March 08, 2015, 07:36:16 PM

I predict USD will keep strengthening as investors will think USD as safe haven.

something  i've noticed, while no one actually thinks the USD is a safe haven, everyone seems to think everyone else thinks the USD is a safe haven, so everyone buys USD as a safe haven fully knowing its not safe, but everyone thinks its safe because everyone thinks everyone else thinks it safe. Now the DXY is at an 11 year high and everyone is confident it going higher... smells like a bubble in the making.
The P:E ratios and number of buybacks are what is making the DAX rise to it's all time high, that along with banks being awash with almost free money that they pretty much have to invest somewhere (bonds are nearly negative!)

The USD is a safe haven in that America is nearer to raising rates than everyone else, but they won't do it if they can help it, and I think they will have to reduce them soon afterwards when all of the bread line mortgages start being defaulted on and the government actually has to pay interest on the huge debts they have.  The new normal is ever lower rates, ever more QE, everyone is happy, until one day when it all goes wrong.
1522  Economy / Speculation / Re: Don't jump! It's not that bad....yet. on: March 08, 2015, 07:29:29 PM
I hate threads like this, I see the title, read the first few lines, open bitcoinity, see the price is the same as earlier today, then have to go on reading!
If you hold bitcoin and haven't dumped yet, why would you dump now??

The price seems to trending upwards, and even forgetting the price, the infrastructure improvements are coming thick and fast!
1523  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Average time for 6 confirmations? on: March 07, 2015, 07:59:54 PM
Even though guides and blockchain says average time is 30 minutes for 3 confirmations, I feel it is around 1.5-2 Hours for 6 confirmations, from what I have experienced.
The goal blocktime of bitcoin is 10 minutes.  For 6 blocks to be solved, it will take 60 minutes if the overall mining power is the same as when the last difficulty change happened.  Usually it has slightly increased, so it takes slightly less than one hour - by design.
1524  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin transfer methods. on: March 07, 2015, 07:53:45 PM
Recently I've been trying to grow my bitcoins. What can I do with them once they're in my blockchain. Can I simply transfer on to a paypal?
Also if I kept my coins, will the value change once bitcoin overall changes? That means if bitcoin dropped, will the amount I've invested drop as well?
Thxx WinkBTC

The amount that you have invested in bitcoin won't change, but the value of your investment will.

If you worry about the fluctuations, then it is probably best for you to send the coins to an exchange and get USD or your local currency instead.  Holding is not for the faint hearted at the moment, the price has falled 70%+ in the last 16 months.
If you are happy to speculate, then just forget the $ value and be happy that crypocurrency usage is inevitable in the future, so the price of Bitcoin will very very probably rise in the long term
1525  Other / Politics & Society / Price of Oil on: March 07, 2015, 07:35:21 PM
What does everyone make of the price of oil at the moment?

There has been a lot of chatter that we could see $10 oil, then in the next breath people say oil could return to $100 in short order.  I personally beleive that it is being used as a political tool against Iran and Russia, whilst the Saudis will also be happy to get rid of some of the more expensive to reach fracking oil from the system.

The thing is, at the moment global supply is high and stores are full, which would indicate that Oil is over-priced.  BUT this rate of oil cannot be profitable got out of the ground at $50-60 per barrel, so in the future prices will have to rise or we will have a short fall, so the price should start to normalize in short order.

Where do you see the price going?  I invested some when Brent went under $50, but I feel slightly less confident at $60.  I do think $100 will be reached in the next 5 years again, but I am after a shorter investment..
1526  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. on: March 07, 2015, 07:22:25 PM
this is why I stay away from reddit
I agree with man made climate change - generally warming, but I am not really all that bothered by it.  I think science will solve the problems for us, and that turning off my lights when I go to the toilet will never make any sizable difference.

Reddit shouldn't ban any opinion that isn't illegal in my opinion, but they were probably sick of every thread being constantly spammed by climate change deniers or skeptics.  It's the same as Atheists getting involved in religious discussions, it's not really adding to the conversation, you have your opinion, good, now leave us in peace to chat!
1527  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: In 2015, faucets are bad for bitcoin on: March 07, 2015, 07:17:41 PM
When BTC started, nobody had any and it was worthless, so it was right to give away thousands of BTC to make it popular. All that has changed. Now that BTC's worth something, now that companies are building on BTC, now that serious business transactions are made with bitcoin, it's about time for faucets to adapt.

BTC is real. It's money, and you've got to work to earn some. I hope all faucets will disappear in 2015. Faucets are hurting bitcoin by making some people believing you can get it while doing nothing sitting in your home. No, BTC isn't like that, and it shouldn't be any easier to get than any fiat currency. Even for small amounts.

I have used some faucets in my time, but they all offer less than one cents worth of Bitcoin every few hours.

I played the coin flapper game for a while too, and thought it had potential to get me some real bitcoins, but then I realised that even that would be about 30k satoshi a day, which is nothing.
It is very cheap advertising that no one would go for if it were in fiat currency, it shouldn't be encouraged, but for different reasons to those you give..
1528  Economy / Economics / Re: Dividend Announced 900 Satoshi -- Buy B4 March 10. on: March 07, 2015, 07:12:25 PM
The great thing about Satoshis are that they are so small, bitcoin is future-proofed as 1 satoshi will always be a low amount, even when Bitcoin is worth 25k per coin.

At the moment though they are used to make minuscule amounts of money appears to be a fair amount. In this case 900 Satoshi is 0.2 US cents.  Not really a great deal!
1529  Economy / Speculation / Re: Breakout incoming! on: March 07, 2015, 07:07:28 PM
A couple of big buys in the last 3 hours, the trend is definitely upwards from here, I can imagine $300 being resisted, but it shouldn't be a long term pause, especially if more big buys come in soon.
1530  Other / Politics & Society / Re: ‘Selfie Trend’ Officially Declared a 'mental disorder' on: March 07, 2015, 06:50:32 PM
I sat on a bus the other day next to a women who took about 40 selfies in about 10 minutes, she then looked through them all, posted a few, then looked through her old selfy posts.

It is at best extreme narcissism, and at worst a mental disorder. I do admit to having taken selfies before, but only so as to get a photo of me and my girlfriend somewhere, rather than asking someone to take a photo (and probably steal my phone). It still feels ridiculous but at least the lady is happy we have photos together.
1531  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Age Of Confilct on: March 07, 2015, 06:45:36 PM
I think we might be on the verge of the age of revolution.

There has been too much redistribution of wealth from the masses to the rich, most cannot afford to buy a house, pensions will be low and paid only after 75 years of age or more. I think the 'rich' countries populations will rise soon, it will start with civil disobedience, but soon change will be demanded.
1532  Economy / Speculation / Re: Should I sell my EUROs? on: March 06, 2015, 08:49:33 PM
I have invested in a USD hedged brent crude ETF, that covers the really low oil price and keeps some of my money out of € too.
Bitcoin is pretty much priced in $ too, or silver, both would be fair choices.
1533  Other / Politics & Society / Re: David Cameron rules out TV debate with Ed Miliband a week before election on: March 06, 2015, 07:56:51 PM
It is a joke situation.  BBC showed a montage of him campaigning for TV debates with Brown before the last GE, now he doesn't think it is worthwhile...
I do think that the debates would probably unfairly help the small parties that would never be held to account, as they will never get into power, especially UKIP.

He might also worry that UKIP will try to lock him down on his position on Europe, making him look closer to UKIP than he really is.  This could splinter his conservative vote, costing him vital marginals and the election.

I would still like to see a 4 party debate though.
1534  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Laser Warfare is Here on: March 06, 2015, 07:51:25 PM
The battlefield of the future recently came a step closer, as a Lockheed Martin laser weapon took out a truck in a field test. The 30-kW fiber laser weapon system was fired at a small truck mounted on a test platform, the laser beam disabled the running engine and drivetrain within seconds.

The recent field test used Lockheed's Advanced Test High Energy Asset (ATHENA) ground-based prototype, single-mode laser, which is based on the company's Area Defense Anti-Munitions (ADAM) laser weapon system. It incorporates the 30-kW Accelerated Laser Demonstration Initiative (ALADIN) fiber laser developed by Lockheed.

ATHENA uses a process that the company calls Spectrum Beam Combining. Though laser weapons have been successfully tested in the past, Lockheed says that even though such systems could acquire, track, and destroy targets, they lack practicality as a tactical weapon because the inefficient nature of the lasers resulted in them being too large, needing too much power, and being difficult to cool.

Would they not be severely limited by line of sight?  The curvature of the earth would mean that on a talk the range would be fairly low, just guessing but maybe 5 miles?
Would they be able to be used by a fighter jet? Then they would be lethal.  I would be interested to see what sort of defences armies come up with against this sort of thing, should they be adopted in the future. Would reflective materials or stealth materials be safe from attack?
1535  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Activism for Everyone - Merchant Adoption project on: March 06, 2015, 07:37:13 PM
I can only help with point 2, not being a graphics person, but I would push the fact that they can accept money directly without having to pay credit card charges or visit the bank.

I don't think that somewhere still accepting cheques is the sort of place that will be accepting bitcoin in the next 25 years, but for some more entrepreneurial spirits, I think reducing their charges would appeal.
1536  Economy / Speculation / Re: To become a whale... on: March 06, 2015, 05:54:04 PM
I would say that someone with >1000 bitcoins is a whale.
With 4 figures it is noticeable on exchanges when they are all parked at a certain price. With a global supply of 14mil coins it is 1/14,000th of the total money supply, that is a big lump of a currency.

10,000btc is a super whale in my opinion, I doubt there are too many people out there with 10k coins that are hot stored.
1537  Economy / Economics / Re: POLL: In the US, is a $250,000 household income middle class? on: March 06, 2015, 05:46:50 PM
To think the middle class is anything but what the average person earns just goes to show how fucked up this planet is.

So anyone earning a $1 more than the average is upper class income?

Middle class is a range...it has to be a specific amount above and below the average or median household income (depending on which number you subscribe to).

Well you have to stablish limits to start considering something middle class or upper class, it's silly that only 1 dollar can make the difference but like i said before there must be limits.
Not really because they are unimportant notions without meaning, so no defined barriers are needed.
If it were actually of importance then it would be something along the lines of being writhing a certain number of standard deviations of the mean wage in the local area.

I would assume that someone earning 100k in New York is poorer as a percentage of the population than someone earning 90k in Idaho.

Just as a side note, in the UK class has no direct link with earnings, it is more of a family history and job title thing.
1538  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The end of copyright and patent is where we should be headed on: March 06, 2015, 02:49:41 PM
Why would companies spend money on R&D without the protection that a patent offers.  They pour money into testing and developing a product only to be usurped by larger companies later.
The copyright isn't so important to me, but I work in Biotechnology and clinical trials and product development takes a very long time and costs lots of money.  Usually big Pharma comes in and buys out the small companies soon after they get drug approval, but without a patent they wouldn't really need to, they could employ 1 or 2 of the key developers and they would have all of the information they need to make the product themselves.

Soon enough no one would do R&D and progress would slow significantly.  Look at what has happened to hollywood since people started pirating the films constantly.  There has hardly been an original film made there in the last 10 years!
1539  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: blockchain.info now shows CHINA mining 54% of BTC on: March 06, 2015, 02:36:09 PM
...

This is the first time I have seen blockchain.info showing separate stats for BW.COM at their mining stats page.

https://blockchain.info/pools

The top four miners (percentage of recent block wins / hashing power):

AntPool:           20%
F2Pool:            16%
BW.COM:         11%
BTCChina Pool:  7%

Total China:    54%

(Sort of reminds when GHash.IO briefly took 51% of mining)
It doesn't alarm me and I don't really think it should be too surprising either.  People make a lot of the fact that some Chinese exchanges have no trading fees, so that in thei ropinion means that the volume is fake.  Nothing has proven this hypothesis though.  China is about 2/7ths of the world populationwise, but they are an increasing power that is tech savvy.  I don't know about the prices of electricity there, so can't comment, but I do know that they are pretty good at producing electricals, so can probably pump out a large number of ASICs at a reasonable price to start these farms.

It doesn't really remind me of the GHash.IO story, because they actually had control of more than 51% of the mining, so could have double spent if they had so chosen.  Here the biggest pool is 20%, which is a good thing for securing the bloch chain from future 51% attacks.

China seems very big on any kind of external investment nowadays, they are buying up property, prescious metals and apparently are now dominating Bitcoin mining too.
1540  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trojan targetting bitcoin! on: March 06, 2015, 01:35:08 PM
Not only trojan but silent miners! That makes 99x PROFIT! Satoshi wont be happy with that  Sad
If satoshi's computer got infected...its over...hacker will probably take over Bitcoin Embarrassed
I'm pretty sure he is safetly storing his btc.. He is not an idiot, come on guys.

He might be an idiot Tongue. Human make always makes mistakes. If he didnt do mistake , he aint human Roll Eyes
There is a difference between making a mistake and being an idiot. I expect he can manage to store at least some of his bitcoins in a paper wallet that is obviously completely safe from trojans.
I use online wallets generally with 2FA and strong unique passwords, and I am not quite as tech savvy as Satoshi!

It does seem that trojans like these will be a hinderance to further adoption of bitcoin though, your average windows 7, internet explorer user won't use Bitcoin again if they manage to lose them without doing anthing really wrong.
