9481  Economy / Economics / Re: Negative interest Rates around the World - Bitcoin as an alternative on: September 12, 2019, 04:06:41 PM

OK, where's the catch? Argentina's >30% can't be real.
Their inflation indeed seems to be around 50%, but I find it hard to believe that the actual interest rate can be at 86%. This must be either a short term thing, incorrect data, or banks doing exit scam.

No, it is not incorrect data. I know about a little about their situation, as I am from Brazil.

The country is completly broken. Government is in fiscal debit every year, and asking for additional loans to pay previous debits.

Additionally, the right wing president is probably not going to be elected again, and the socialists will take over. This generated an additional concern and a problem with trust with the investors. The situation will probably get worse.

Quote
“The IMF like everyone else needs clarity on the economic program from the Fernandez team,” says Siobhan Morden, head of Latin America fixed-income strategy for Amherst Pierpont Securities in New York.

“It would require a huge positive shock post- election to stabilize investor confidence, including commitment to an IMF program,” she says.

Such a commitment would not sit well with the bulk of Fernandez voters who see the Fund as too austere for their current needs. https://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2019/09/09/argentinas-central-bank-is-running-out-of-money/#39f0993f2ce2

Someone would need to be crazy to invest in Argentina now, even with 30% real interest rates, because goverment will probably devaluate their money by printing more. Argentina is known to fake inflation data, so probably their real inflation is far more than the actual interest rates.

Quote
Inaccurate inflation, growth and poverty reporting has been an open secret since Fernandez took office in 2007. She sparked howls from the opposition last month when she said Argentina had a lower poverty rate than Germany.

Argentina even manipulated Big Mac price (from mc Donalds) to keep inflation artificially lower:

Quote
Argentina likely manipulating Big Mac prices to keep inflation seemingly lower

And compared to what is on the menu, like a quarter pounder or chicken McNuggets, the Big Mac is cheap. With fries and drink, it’s just 22 pesos, or about $5.50. The other meals start at 33 pesos.

So why are the Golden Arches hiding those two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onion on a sesame seed bun? And selling them at 30 percent off? Boyano’s not surprised at all. In fact, he called it, “an obvious thing."

Boyano said Argentina’s current government, especially commerce secretary Guillermo Moreno, is notorious for telling companies to fix certain prices to keep the official inflation rate down.

The Economist magazine publishes one of several inflation indicators. Its famous Big Mac index uses the prices of Big Macs worldwide to measure inflation rates. The magazine called out Argentina last year for manipulating the price.

There’s broad consensus among private economists here that inflation is more than double the government’s official rate. Last year, President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner’s administration sued 12 economists for publishing their own figures, including those of former undersecretary of finance Miguel Kiguel.

https://www.pri.org/stories/2012-02-07/argentina-likely-manipulating-big-mac-prices-keep-inflation-seemingly-lower

Well, I could write a lot more about it, but that´s enough.

TLDR: In reality, Argentina probably has a negative interest rate.
9482  Local / Economia & Mercado / Re: vale a pena trazer hardware wallets dos EUA pro Brasil? on: September 12, 2019, 01:45:27 PM
Exatamente!

Oficial Trezor Shop: EUR 74,76 ~R$ 336,00
60% imposto de importação: ~ R$ 200,00
Total: R$ 536,00

9483  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ballet wallet on: September 12, 2019, 01:41:20 PM
a bip38 encrypted pre-generated key... I wouldn't even apply to get one for free... There's no guarantee whatsoever the company didn't keep logs of every private key they generated.

Weird how someone in crypto for such a long time can come up with something that has glaring turns offs to most.

It is very confortable to have your QR code to receive cryptocurrency, and this could really be good for the "masses" and adoption.

However this can be done in your phone without any pre generated private key. There are many wallets doing that already, such as coinomi (without any pre generated keys).

Everyone carry a phone nowadays, and it is much better and safer than this new hardware wallet, imo.
9484  Economy / Economics / Negative interest Rates around the World - Bitcoin as an alternative on: September 12, 2019, 11:03:53 AM
I was taking a look at interest rates around the world, specially in G20
You can check them here: https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/interest-rate?continent=g20
And you can also check their inflation rate here https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/inflation-rate?continent=g20

I crossed that data and made this table.

Quote
Country       Real interest rate
Netherlands        -2,8
Germany            -1,4
United Kingdom    -1,35
Switzerland        -1,05
Euro Area        -1
France            -1
Australia            -0,6
Japan            -0,6
Italy            -0,5
Spain            -0,3
Canada            -0,25
United States        0,45
Singapore        1,34
China            1,45
South Korea        1,5
Indonesia        2,01
India            2,25
South Africa        2,5
Brazil             2,57
Russia            2,7
Saudi Arabia        4,05
Turkey            4,74
Mexico            4,84
Argentina            31,59

You will see that first world countries are mostly with negative interest rates. Germany, for example, with a 0 interest rate has 1.4% inflation rate. So the real interest rate would be -1.4%.

This way, there is certainly a reason for all this interest in Gold, Silver and other metals. And, for bitcoin.

Millionaires and institutional investor can't put all their money on Stocks, neither on negative interest rates. Alternatives such as metals and bitcoin are certainly interesting.
9485  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Lowest fee wallet on: September 12, 2019, 09:32:39 AM
Bitcoin fees also depend on the wallet , if your wallet is or not compatible with segwit.

If you use a segwit address (bc1 or 3..) you will pay lower fees. However, the most important is to be able customize the fees, and use low fees such as 1 sat/byte.

You need also to consolidate your inputs to pay lower fees. You can check those guide by Loycev about it here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2848987.0

Additionally, in this website you can play with fees, number of input and output and segwit/legacy anf see how much you will pay on fees.
https://www.buybitcoinworldwide.com/fee-calculator/

Edit: about wallet recommendation, certainly electrum is the best. If it is too complicated for you, try mycelium, as said above.
9486  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Not enough UTXO's will result in loss of privacy. on: September 11, 2019, 08:01:05 PM
Is there anything I can do to avoid this?   And what does it actually mean?

This post is not related to only Armory Wallet, so I suggest moving this to Technical Discussion.

UTXO (Unspent transaction output) are bitcoins you received. Every transaction you received is a UTXO.
Those bitcoins can be tracked to who send them you.

For example, you have a verified account in coinbase and coinbase sent Bitcoins to your wallet. Someone can check your public address and see that your bitcoins came from coinbase, then they could ask coinbase who you are.
Then, when you sent those bitcoins to someone else, he can also discover who you are. This is how you lose your privacy with UTXO.

To avoid this, it is good to generate a new address for every transaction. It will improve your privacy, but it won't give you anonymity, because that "coinbase address" (which is linked to your ID) will not be your only one. People will never know for sure how many addresses you have, so nobody will know your total balance.

To have a pseudo anonymity (which is not 100%) you have to send those UTXO to a bitcoin Mixer, which will mix your UTXO and give you "clean" coins, which cannot be tracked back to you.
9487  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 10 Useful Browser Extensions or Plugins that benefits Crypto Users on: September 11, 2019, 07:47:22 PM
I agree. I've used metamask before and it really detects fishy websites but I'm not comfortable anymore using any extensions except the ledger extensions.

You are probably talking about an old Chrome App from ledger?
That app is outdated, you should unninstall it an move to ledger live. https://shop.ledger.com/pages/ledger-live

It is a new software made by Ledger that replaced this old Chrome extension. This is the software that is receiving updates, so it is safer, and also has a better interface and functionality.
9488  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Lapps.co - A curation of the best new Lightning Network apps on: September 11, 2019, 01:02:23 PM
The only lightning network app that I know is Eclair wallet. However, it is not in your list.
Actually, I can't find any wallet there.

How are people supposed to use those apps without a wallet? I really think you should add some wallets. Eclair is the only lightning network wallet I have ever use, so I cannot recommend any other.

People ask me where all the money needed for $1trn bitcoin market value would come from? My answer: silver, gold, countries with negative interest rate (Europe, Japan, US soon)

I agree with this. There are countries with -0.7% interest rates, so they charge you to keep your money.

This is certainly a problem and millionaires over the world (as well as institutional investor) are seeking for alternatives to stock market, like gold , silver and Bitcoin.

9490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin - Friends & Family adoption - Share your experience. on: September 11, 2019, 09:13:39 AM
In my opinion, telling people to buy bitcoin is a terrible idea, as any other investment advice.

If they lose money, they will blame you. And they probably will. Anyone who seeks for investment advice is going to lose money, because nobody that know what they are doing would ask for an investment advice.

What I do is to tell about BTC, and say that I invest in it. I tell about it, but most of the people have the completely wrong idea about it. I try to give them a more precise idea about what Bitcoin is, why it is important and why so many people buy it ( and no, it is not to make quick money).

I try to tell about decentralization," digital gold", buy anything with pseudo anonymously, freedom, etc.
9491  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: MetaMask and Ledger Nano on: September 11, 2019, 08:36:19 AM
There is no reason for all this drama.

Just keep your twelve word safe. Install metamask again and insert your 12 words. Done. Funds "recovered".

It is impossible to insert 12 words in ledger nano, because it requires 24 words.

So, you will need to send from metamask to ledger nano, or just keep it in metamask address.
9492  Local / Economia & Mercado / Re: vale a pena trazer hardware wallets dos EUA pro Brasil? on: September 10, 2019, 08:03:31 PM
Saiu noventa reais a menos.

9493  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Ledger Device displaying Warning! When trying to confirm transaction? on: September 10, 2019, 05:50:46 PM
I agree bob, it's just been my laziness and i'm oldskool with an offline laptop for transactions

As far as I understand the situation here, you are  using windows 7 as a online computer, because you are trying to send transactions using Electrum and ledger nano . An offline computer cannot do that

Maybe you think you have an offline device but you don't?
9494  Local / Economia & Mercado / Re: vale a pena trazer hardware wallets dos EUA pro Brasil? on: September 10, 2019, 05:41:57 PM

9495  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are Merits to you? on: September 10, 2019, 05:34:33 PM
I don't agree that merits are nothing. Maybe for veterans like Stedsm, that already had a reputation before the introduction of the merit system.

Merits  are a good (although not perfect, far from it) way to evaluate how much effort a user put in his posts.

There are many users here which don't care much about what they write, and barely read. Those users have earned few or zero merits, and most of the times it is not even worth reading their posts.

By experience, I somehow learned to ignore users which have like 1001 or 253 merits. It is not worth reading what they are writing, most of the time.

Of course there are exceptions, and sometimes they are users which are not using the forum very much, or they suddenly decided to read before write, or they are talking about something they know. I always try to merit those posts.

Earning merits is not something easy, but it they are coming if you are patient and you are posting things that makes sense. It requires patience, time (to read and to write), and some effort.

Users which earned lots of merits write good posts most of the time, and those posts worth my time to read. If someone makes good posts, he will earn merits, soon or later.
9496  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Ledger Device displaying Warning! When trying to confirm transaction? on: September 10, 2019, 04:35:34 PM
I wouldn't go ahead and confirm it without being 100% sure. You are right to be cautious.

Ledger support said you are using Windows 7? It is time to upgrade your windows system, as both manufacturer are recommending (windows and ledger). There are many updated which and bug fixes that are not being fixed on windows 7 anymore.

Additionally, try to send a small transaction (0.0001 BTC) or whatever. If it is ok, it arrives at the address you want and you have access to the change, you are probably safe. My main concern would be regarding the change. Try to send a transaction with a small input.

I think this derivation path is unusual as well.

Have you tried to send using ledger live?

If I were you, I would install Windows 10 and try again using Electrum
9497  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 10 Useful Browser Extensions or Plugins that benefits Crypto Users on: September 10, 2019, 03:20:45 PM
In my opinion, the most useful extensions in this list are metamask and ublock
Ublock because nobody should be watching ads.

And metamsk because it is  also a security extension, as it will alert of most basic phishing sites.
Look what happens when you try to access a phishing site while using metamask.

Quote

It doesn't work for all phishing, but it may save some newbies funds.
9498  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [LIST] Blockchain Powered Phones on: September 10, 2019, 12:28:53 PM
The growth of crypto apps on mobile devices is good for crypto currency ecosystem because it will bring crypto to more people, but using phones or mobile devices to store crypto, and trade is one of worst things crypto enthusiasts can do, in my opinion.

Firstly, you can more easily lose your mobile devices (by absent-mindedness), much more easily compare to laptops due to smaller size of mobile devices.

Secondly, most of people don't pay too much attention on security of their mobile devices (AV softwares).

Thirdly, when phones broken technically, you are nearly not be able to fix it yourself, and have to bring them to Maintenance Officies. It is another risks. With computers, people can fix issues themselves, or at least don't leave important data to others.

I only dedicate very small funds on mobile devices, and most of time, wallets are empty. Whenever I hang out and have plans to do something, I send a few bitcoin to mobile wallet, just in case in need to use it with urgent need.

I think none of those problems are relevant.
You don't need your phone, just the seed.

If losing or broking the device made any difference, hardware wallets would be a terrible ideia, because they are small and once broken it is not Worthing fixing it (unless you mail it to the manufacturer).

You just need to store your seed in a piece of paper safely, then it doesn't matter of your phone broken, or you lose it.
9499  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Apps for exchanging on: September 10, 2019, 12:42:24 AM
Can anyone recommend good apps on android for exchanging? What do you usually use? Was there anything new released recently? I'm new at this and interested in some non-custodial exchangers.

You post confused.

What do you really want to do? Exchange coins? Like ETH -> BTC?

If you want to do that, you dont need an APP. You can just register on binance.com or go to some exchange service like changelly/easyrabbit and exchange your coins. There are even some wallets like coinomi which allow you to exchange your coins inside your own wallet (which is integrated with those services).

For high volume, Binance is better. If you have a low volume, like 50 usd or less, stick with those services I mentioned.

I do not recommend Shapeshift but they are enforcing KYC now, so be careful.
9500  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is the US Government Trying To Control Crypto? on: September 10, 2019, 12:21:42 AM
I mean, they might think they are going to control it, sure.  But in practice, they're pretty impotent.  They'll interfere with any low-hanging fruit they can reach, but the concept as a whole is just beyond them.  They'll pass some laws that primarily affect exchanges and businesses, then maybe point to whatever dark-web criminal last got arrested and say "yeah, look at how much control we have", but in practice, they can't do much of any real consequence.

You can't really regulate mathematics and that's basically all we're doing here.  Obscurity and security via really big numbers.

I agree. They can control all business related to cryptocurrencies, including altcoins like Libra, Ripple, etc.
Even interesting projects like BAT are being forced to do things against their principles, such as enforcing KYC to its publishers...

However, bitcoin cannot be fully controlled.

When people realize that, and altcoins become controlled, I hope we get rid of most of shitcoins.
