1021  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Pegged Sidechains [PDF Whitepaper] on: October 28, 2014, 12:16:44 AM
I expect that preventing a 51% style attack on any alt coin used will be necessary?
So that would mean that any coin used in the sidechain would have to be a coin that is potential competition for BTC too?
51% attacks only affect blockchains, not assets/"coins".
Ok so lest say "donkeycoin's" blockchain was being used, and there was a 51% attack on "donkeycoin". What are the possible implications?

Bah...

Burning Man for me means leaving the phone in the car the whole week...
Yeah..I don't think i'd actually use it there...but the possibilities are big.

Just thought I'd throw this out there:

Overheard on IRC: ATCSECURE: "there is a new LTE update coming which XC will be leveraging for ad-hoc [physical] mesh networking via direct p2p."

If only people realize how big this is... think Firechat, but 10x better... because it doesn't use bluetooth which is limited to 30-100 feet.   LTE is many times greater distance than that.    Imagine even if you don't have internet and you can still chat with people in the forest using LTE radio built into your phone....
Hope its ready for burning man next year Smiley

gr8.this faq predicts 900% gains.cant take that seriously.sorry but that was Too Bolt.

Huh? No it does not predict 900% gains. What FAQ are you looking at?

This is the FAQ: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=829576.msg9269808#msg9269808

You should at least be honest - the fact that You removed this prediction does not mean it was not there before. Anyway, I can´t see any benefit in blocknet, as there already are few other players, including sidechains, which probably win.
Sidechains are interesting but IIUC they will have to prevent a 51% attack on any coin they use. So that means that any coin they use will also have to have some real value.
Which will mean IIUC that Bitcoin will never be the only coin.

Or have I misunderstood?
1026  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoins are killing Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency as a whole on: October 27, 2014, 09:54:12 AM
Would it really matter if alts killed Bitcoin though. That would not necessarily be bad.
Of course if you own a lot of Bitcoin you might think it was bad but it's conceivable it could be good.
Yes I know that is heresy  Tongue

Does anyone know how coingateway works?
If i want to buy the blocknet with XC, do I deposit XC at coingateway?

You're given an address to pay XC to, and you enter an address to receive BLOCK on. Press the button and off it goes...

So do I need to download a BLOCK wallet now?

The Cyprus "Bail in" is worth mentioning. Most people think they still own the money they deposit into a bank. In fact they have loaned the money to the bank.

You could show them this too.

ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa — For almost 40 years, Carole Hinders has dished out Mexican specialties at her modest cash-only restaurant. For just as long, she deposited the earnings at a small bank branch a block away — until last year, when two tax agents knocked on her door and informed her that they had seized her checking account, almost $33,000.

The Internal Revenue Service agents did not accuse Ms. Hinders of money laundering or cheating on her taxes — in fact, she has not been charged with any crime. Instead, the money was seized solely because she had deposited less than $10,000 at a time, which they viewed as an attempt to avoid triggering a required government report.

“How can this happen?” Ms. Hinders said in a recent interview. “Who takes your money before they prove that you’ve done anything wrong with it?”

The federal government does.

What is Block-stream?
Blockstream is some project to do with sidechains. Sidechains are an attempt theoretically, to implement any open source altcoin "into" bitcoin.

As well as I was saying Arlyn job is now doubled and he is posting here much less then before. Hope this block-net will pay out all XC team efforts and hope this Dump is orchestrated..
Dump looks like a large holder exiting or reducing exposure.
I'm not selling any of my core holdings in XC or BTC until the USD collapses anyway...so I don't mind Smiley Unless there is some massive spike between now and then

Your average basement dweller can produce a new altcoin in a few hours and dedicate the remainder of the day to create a few graphics, hype up some new 'innovation', and the sheeple traders follow blindly.
Can you show me a coin someone produced in a few hours?
The reality is there are some very smart and very talented innovators adding enormous value to blockchain technology.

why did we involve with SDC in the first place for the block-net?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=818939.0
I think the coins were chosen on the basis that the Devs were competent, the code looked ok and the coin had some innovation. These are just my guesses.
If a small group own large numbers of coins then that is probably not the developers fault.
The fact is that now with Blockstream possibly coming it's good to have coins in the Blocknet, I think

It would seem by looking at the price that blocknet is/has effectively killed XC. Quite sad really. Over 70% drop since the beginning of the month. Wow and I bought more at 001, how stupid was I?!?
But there are other coins falling that have nothing to do with the blocknet

Can't you people already see that the one dumping is Moolah?
That shitface is processing a small portion of the withdrawals in order to make people believe that he truly wants to give their money back, but in fact he want to take the remaining altcoins too (~1000 BTC) from Mintpal.

The dump is going to continue for as long as he have remaining XC.

People had not freaking reason to dump XC, and the dump started as soon as Moolah ran away with the coins.

Bad thing -  a lot of people will loose XC from Mintpal
Good thing - a better distribution

People who lost XC with Mintpal now have the chance to buy at almost half the price
Has anyone lost XC from Mintpal. I got mine out no problem.

Speaking of altcoins versus BTC here is an interesting thread.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=831879.0
Read it all.  Emhhh...  90% of plain BS
Those very few valid points mentioned - did not change my mind ( and plans ) at all. Even one tiny bit.

One can hardly change one's mind or plan's about something so speculative with something so speculative.

Yes but of course the future sustained value is already there, everyone is looking at monetary value at this point in time.  With regards to investors, investors like to see a flavour, a taste that will last, the seed which can reproduce but always sourced back, has greater value that anything it becomes.  Think coke, cherry , diet , max and nothing else, it's all pre-programmed.  Think Coke, always think XC currency, the seed will now grow because it must do as it will.  It's important to remember, will only ever be a reproduction, not the original space occupied originally.  From beginning to destination always look at the window, the route will only ever be interpretation of the impulse only the wise understand.  As dark lifts leaving a stillness only the birth will emerge.  Connect together that which we have not thought to use and a distinction. Will occur birth of the fountain.  Bye Bye max curator, want i do on the yellow brick road.  To call a cook a chef, and grain of rice a mountain.  What is it, it was is.

These bitcoin forums just get better and better.

wtf how many coins dumpers have... i hope dumping will finish soon, because its very sad to XC at 78k.... incredible price

the question is if the price will recover if the people stop to dump or if the price stays like this. In the last 2 weeks the coin lost nearly 60% of it's value

Lets see what next week will bring. The blocknet ITO is wednesday. It's an excellent time to buy some XC and use it to acquire BLOCKS.
It's an excellent time to buy XC and hold them (just because they are so damn cheap right now!)

I heard the story about cheap coins a week ago... and wonder what will you tell me if next week we will see XC at half the price today? Smiley Was that really cheap last week? Smiley

It's possible noone wil buy XC for block ito cause there is many XC believers who already got XC and can spend it this way.

Hope I'm wrong.
Except that now, it would take most of the XC in existence to buy the entire blocknet. The other coins, well you could spend every coin and you still wouldn't buy the blocknet

If an altcoin has a serious advantage over bitcoin, we can most likely implement that feature into bitcoin and just fork it.
Can you imagine the politics  Smiley

The quality of the people involved with the sdiechain whitepaper shows that at least some prominent knowledgeable Bitcoiners recognize that altcoins technology is pretty interesting and even superior in many aspects to Bitcoin.
Just as no one knew where bitcoin would be a couple of years ago, no one knows where altcoins will be over the horizon. And the horizon is not that far away
