1321  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Bitcoins For Sale at a Discounted Price on: June 28, 2012, 08:03:25 AM
(e.g. it takes longer for two parties to come to an agreeable price because they both want to be the maker not the taker.)
That happens on any exchange, regardless of how the fees are done, because of the spread. However, placing your order on the order book to save a few cents/BTC is far more riskier than outright buying, if you are hoping on actually doing the trade.
1322  Other / Meta / Re: Watchlist on: June 27, 2012, 07:56:41 AM
Be sure to convert all of your subs to watches, because I might start manually deleting subs that I see that were made before this post, soon (I'll check that you've logged-in recently first, though).
1323  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Hashkings Lending, Deposit(Specials New BTCST Special(OPEN), Escrow on: June 26, 2012, 02:06:56 PM
Also, I have seen downloads of the block chain posted on this forum, but it may allow for more of a security risk then you are willing to take.
If you have your own local Bitcoin client, it would be best to copy that block database, since you can trust it completely. If you have a newer version of Bitcoin, be sure to check the "Detach databases at shutdown" option before closing your client and copying the files.
1324  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why do people sell bitcoins and move the money back to their bank? on: June 26, 2012, 07:56:22 AM
Personally, I went all-in at $5.40 (which is not as bad of an idea as it sounds, since I don't use leverage and I diversify between the exchanges (for USD) and local and offline wallets as well), so now that I personally feel that we've reached a good top, I'm finally pulling back my USD and a good portion of my BTC (but nowhere close to all - I'm actually back to where I started before the big rally) to my bank account to pay the debts that I've accrued over the past month, as well as to finance my trip to Europe.

Hmm...
1326  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: ***WARNING TO PEOPLE WHO USE MONEYPAK/WALMART MONEY CARD*** on: June 24, 2012, 09:41:47 AM
They specifically said if I don't provide proof of all MoneyPak reloads, that I'm out of luck. Sad
They were lying. You'll get the money back, it just might take 180 days.
1327  Economy / Lending / Re: 5 btc loan for 24hrs on: June 23, 2012, 12:15:10 PM

1328  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL refused to issue refund because it was paid with bitcoin (via Bitpay) on: June 21, 2012, 07:28:49 PM
Oh, good. You won't have be sued by the FTC for $16,000/order after all.

Anyone who isn't able to get a refund, please contact the FTC.

Not a Fool edit: Why ADD Crud To My Post, Is this Really Necessary? All my coins are paper backups.
Most people are stupid, and they might not realize what that command does.

bulanula, please be quiet. You're not helping things.
What is your response to this?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=65989.msg788813#msg788813

According to that post, you owe even more money.
So that's where I remember him from! Since this is related to shakaru, I must investigate this. WiseOldOwl, if you respond to anything at all, respond to this post. I need to know what happened with you and shakaru.
1334  Other / Meta / Re: Sticky the www.spammer guy? on: June 20, 2012, 07:17:41 AM
I'm almost tempted to write a script to parse the post report emails and then auto-nuke these guys...  Undecided
1335  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: $200 Dwolla for BTC or Mtgox USD code on: June 20, 2012, 06:08:06 AM
As the title states I'm looking to trade $200 Dwolla for a BTC or Mtgox USD code.

Thanks!
why don't you just send the dwolla balance to mtgox? or are they no longer accepting it at mtgox?
MtGox only now allows AML-verified customers to deposit with Dwolla.
1336  Economy / Speculation / Re: Making my weekly purchase of bitcoins. Should I hold off a while? on: June 20, 2012, 06:01:45 AM
If you buy bitcoins weekly as part of a long-term investment strategy, it's best to remain consistent. Otherwise, you'll quickly find yourself in the position of a daytrader, and unless you have experience in daytrading, you'll lose almost every time.

that's how you acquire experience as a daytrader
Well, that's true. But, the biggest disadvantage in turning into a daytrader is the amount of research you need to do every single day. That's why I became a moderator here - because I read most of this forum anyway so that I don't miss anything. Without doing that research, daytrading is much riskier. Hell, I'm scared enough just going to sleep, because I can't research while I'm asleep.

Judging by this week, it appears you were right and I was wrong. Thanks for the tip!
While I may have been right this week, this strategy won't work in your favor every week. However, it allows you to not worry about the current price, and instead focus on whether or not you think the bitcoin price will rise between now and several years from now.

(also, I wanted to urge you not to hold off because I was fairly certain in that specific case that bitcoin would rise further after that post, but I wanted to provide more sound advice instead of a one-off tip)
1337  Other / Meta / Re: Really? on: June 20, 2012, 05:15:03 AM
Well, I'm not going to override his decision as a local mod, but my guess is that he just hit the wrong button, since lock and sticky are right next to each other. That being said, it should be up to either him or theymos to unsticky it.
No he posted specifically in the Enterpoint thread that it would be locked and stickied because that was how they would do their penance. I like it.
Huh. That's... unconventional. I personally don't like it, since it really devalues the power of stickies. That being said, I don't want to encroach on Diablo's territory, so we'll have to wait for theymos' decision.
1338  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Ultimate blockchain compression w/ trust-free lite nodes on: June 19, 2012, 08:08:04 AM
Quote
But consumers of the meta chain would depend on nothing that didn't have 6 confirmations (meta chain confirmations in the bitcoin block chain, not just 6 bitcoin blocks)
.
That would be DAYS in confirmation time in the beginning, who would use that to any great extent?
Many people. Imagine if all you had to do today to bootstrap was to download a week of blocks. A low-end laptop can do that in less than an hour today, and that's without all of the code optimizations the Bitcoin implementations will have in the future, not to mention hardware.
1339  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Ultimate blockchain compression w/ trust-free lite nodes on: June 19, 2012, 08:02:03 AM
...and new miners would go back at least 10,000 meta-blocks...

Even if new miners chose not to do this, and successfully get tricked with a bogus view of the meta tree, their worst case is that they produce invalid blocks that become farts in the wind.  But I suppose mining pools would have a responsibility to do this.
I would argue that as long as new miners that are bootstrapping at any given time are only a small % of the hash power, they'd be stupid not to verify that far back. Any misplaced trust in the recent meta-blocks could cause them to create an invalid block, which would be a terrible finical loss. In fact, for this reason, many miners will likely opt to always hold the entire chain, and not trust the meta-blocks at all. I consider that a good thing.

Generally, only users and merchants should be using the meta-chain to bootstrap, although I won't be that disappointed if miners eventually have to use it too, as long as they're careful.
1340  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: what's the longest delay you have had with MTGOX? on: June 19, 2012, 07:42:58 AM
If it takes this long, why don't people just withdraw there bitcoins to another exchange where the withdrawing to USD or EUR goes faster then.. my god.. 21 days?
They are. Try selling bitcoins anywhere right now within 1% of MtGox - you can't. So, it's either save 2-4% by withdrawing from MtGox and waiting 2-5 weeks, or spend that 2-4% and get your money fairly quickly. Oh, and I forgot to mention, you can only get out of BTC outside of MtGox for 2-4% if you're talking a volume of a few hundred BTC. Much more than that would clear the books of the other exchanges.
