I think mostly the price went this high because of the hype. I don't think it's even safe to say that criminals are using bitcoin today because of its anonymity feature. Real money is still way more anonymous than bitcoin since you have no way of knowing where the money that you are currently holding came from unlike bitcoins.

Bitcoins feature doesnt only give advantages it also has disadvantages. Its is advantageous for the people whos clear intention is to have a fast and easy peer-to-peer transaction with small amount or almost no fee transaction. As well as for those criminals where in they can pay illegal transactions with complete anonymity. Really this is and was an inevitable thing. Bitcoin is a special case because it does not have a physical form, and while not entirely, untraceable. It paves way for alot of new ways to commit illegal actions such as tax evasion and drug exchange. Governments may be off-put by this fact, but in reality they shouldn't. A basic contrargument is that the US dollar can also be used to do both, it's just that it's a bit different with cryptocurrencies. This shouldn't surprise anyone really.
